Are you parenting in the same way God parents you? This is one of the big questions Amanda Carrara asks in this episode. As a mother, writer, and parenting coach, she shares valuable knowledge and wisdom about how to create connection in your home by looking at parenting from a new perspective. Full SHOW NOTES for today's conversation Key Takeaways When your children successfully launch from your house, what characteristics do you want them to have? Being a parent is an invitation to lean into a relationship with your Heavenly Father. You keep yourself from experiencing the joys of parenthood when you deny negative emotions such as frustration. The #1 hidden parenting tool is to pause and acknowledge your child's experiences. Do you have margin in your life for sacred interruptions? Amanda Carrara Amanda Carrara is a speaker, writer, and parenting coach passionate about helping others experience a parenting revival. Amanda and her husband have three children and live in Mahtomedi, Minnesota. Key Quotes 8:29 - "I always say that parenting begins within us. So I think about the scripture from 1 John 4 that we love because He first loved us. And so as a parent we actually don't have the capacity to show up for our kids the way that we really want the desire that we have until we've received that from the Father. And so being a parent is actually a gift and an invitation to lean in your relationship with your Heavenly Father. And so it's all of that outpouring of receiving from Him that we can give to our kids." 12:58 - "There is so much power in the pause. Your tool is noticing your child's experience." We have a great discussion today about: Her upbringing in Minnesota and the multiple cultures she celebrated being in a diverse family and how that's given her an empathetic perspective on life. The trip to meet her biological & foster family from Korea. How Asian American representation in media effected her and leaned her into her decision to becoming an actor and representing the race herself. Asian American history not being taught in public education and how that effects how the rest of America interacts with Asian Americans. Her view as an Asian American and the Atlanta shootings. Give it a listen and enjoy some of that HomeGrown.
How can a church be like a passenger plane that runs out of fuel 8 miles in the air? For a plane to get off the ground, you need high air pressure to be great enough to give lift. For a plane to stay in the air, you need engines to keep the plane going at a proper speed. To keep going at a proper speed, you need fuel. So what happens when there's no gas and then no engines on a Boeing 767 at 41,000 feet? How is a church like an airplane? Have you ever heard of the phrase "get right with God?" It seems to connote that we have to do something in order to get back into God's good graces. But in the texts for this coming weekend from Jeremiah and Hebrews talks about God being the one that acts in order to get people right with God. The response is not to do something for God to like us but to respond to God's love with discipleship. After another weeks slate of games the SSP Boys Basketball program lead by Coach McCollister has pushed themselves to 9-0 highlighted by a key conference win against previous undefeated Mahtomedi. Despite what many might see as an "overnight" success, Coach Mac has been building to this moment for years with a lot of lessons that have helped him be prepared for a season like this. Coach Junker and the SSP Girls Basketball tested themselves against the best in their conference this week to find out where they stack up. After some tough lessons, the answer is that the girls have the ability to compete with the teams at the top, it's just a matter of finding the consistency to make the changes the expectation and not the exception. Both coaches in this episode reflect on some important lessons that have guided their journeys to get to where they are now and what they are still learning about the game and their teams as they attempt to keep pushing South St. Paul Basketball forward in the the record books, the eyes of the basketball community, and in life. A special thanks to the players, families, coaches, and community members of South St. Paul for supporting both of our programs and for weathering the year that was 2020. On today's show we interview Stand-Up Comedian and former Professional Track Athlete Aba Omot and his brother Professional Basketball Player Nuni Omot. What makes these brother's story so incredible is the obstacles they had to endure and conquer to reach their goals. When Aba was 3 his family was caught in the middle of a civil war in Ethiopia, they traveled 440 miles to safety at a refugee camp in Nairobi. While on that journey by foot, Nuni was born. With some help Aba and Nuni along with their mother were able to move to the United States. This trek meandered through New York City, South Dakota and Minneapolis before the family settled in Mahtomedi. The Omot brother's discuss how challenging it was to overcome a language barrier in a single mother household while trying to figure out how to provide. Their Mother would work two jobs, while Aba would baby sit Nuni. Aba discusses how his responsibilities as a child were far different from his peers. But how watching their Mother's work ethic helped instill that same work ethic in themselves. Both brother's were late bloomers, but when their opportunities arose they took full advantage. Aba discusses how he went from being in the shadow to then the spotlight as a captain after one season, then to being one of the greatest all around track athletes for the University of St. Thomas, before attempting to qualify for the Olympics, but now has found a home behind the mic doing stand up comedy. Nuni discussed going from playing JV basketball his Junior year, to then growing a few more inches his senior year to then averaging 18 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 assist. Nuni was still disappointed because he did't receive any D1 offers. Nuni chose to play D2 for Concordia and realized he didn't want to stop there, he trasfferred to a D1 JUCO program, had a great season, then the D1 offers started pouring in. Nuni elected to choose Baylor where he was a staple 3 and D player for the program over the following 2 years. Nuni goes on to tell us what motivates him, His experiences with the Nets and the Warriors and the trials and tribulations of playing overseas. It was a pleasure having the Omot brothers on the show and we hope to have them back! A must listen!

Enjoy! "Many of the StrongFirst Leadership, Masters, Seniors and Team Leaders are highly qualified and internationally respected martial arts instructors. These are people I hold in high esteem. I am honoured to call them my friends and I highly recommend people learn from them. For example, I spent several summers assisting at John Engum’s martial arts survival camp in Detroit Lakes, MN. StrongFirst Leadership Instructors there included Dr. Ricardo Nieves and Dr. Prentiss Rhodes. I was fortunate to take 2 of Peter Lakatos’ Krav Maga seminars at John Engum’s Academy of Taekwondo in Brainerd, MN. This past May, I trained in Prague with Pavel Macek of KB5 and Practical Hung Kyun. I’ve attended StrongFirst Certifications at Steve Milles’ Five Points Academy in New York City. I got to witness great fighters training and coaching there. I recommend any books from StrongFirst and they can be found here. My favorite exercises are the overhead press and the front lever. The first time I remember pressing a barbell overhead was in Mahtomedi, MN when I was 13 years old. Over the decades that followed I barbell pressed in my basement, at the lake, and in various gyms. I also enjoyed one arm pressing a 70-100 lb dumbbell overhead while standing on a small cliff overlooking the beautiful lake in NW Ontario where the family cabins are located. I purchased many kettlebells for my school and home after Pavel reintroduced kettlebells to the west in 2001. The overhead kettlebell press quickly became my lift of choice. It is also for many, like myself, the most shoulder friendly of the three. The front lever is meditative for me as I mentioned. However, in my experience, the exercise that gives the most bang for the buck...by far... is the kettlebell swing! I regularly use it with people of all ages and backgrounds...high school kids, doctors, nurses, athletic therapists, chiropractors, lawyers, engineers, police officers, musicians, singers, martial artists, hockey, basketball, volleyball, football players and more. After a winter (or several years) of training with me, which includes thousands of swings, my rugby players, male and female, are far quicker and they can repeat this quickness again and again. This is noticeable by everyone at the rugby park and especially their opponents! The other big bang mainstay in my coaching is the get-up. Several of my high school kids including members of our multiple Provincial Champion varsity basketball team(s) could perform get ups with the Beast 48kg kettlebell. I feel this helped them in many ways including easily ripping the ball from their opponent when fighting for it overhead."
