Latest Beef Industry News European Union Makes Decision On Cultivated Meat Ban The European Commission criticized Hungary's proposed ban on cultured meat, calling it “unjustified” and potentially disruptive to the EU single market. “No lab-grown meat products are currently authorized in the EU, making a ban premature,” stated the Commission, adding that it could interfere with the EU's scientific approval process for novel foods. Following a TRIS assessment, Sweden, Lithuania, the Netherlands, and Czechia also opposed the ban, citing risks to market unity if cultured meat is later approved. The Netherlands further argued that cultured meat could benefit farmers, offering a future-proof alternative for the agricultural sector. Hungary can now revise its draft ban in response to these comments. Vilsack Calls For Congress To Act On Farm Bill Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack is urging Congress to pass the overdue Farm Bill. “We need a Farm Bill now,” he emphasized in a call with American Farmland Trust, noting limited time left this fall for a bipartisan solution or at least an extension of the current bill. Though hopeful for a five-year bill by year-end, Vilsack warns delays could disrupt 2025 farm financing. The 2018 Farm Bill, temporarily extended, expired on Sept. 30, putting pressure on Congress to act before the November elections. NCBA Criticizes Dietary Guidelines Recommendations The National Cattlemen's Beef Association (NCBA) criticized the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee's recent push to replace high-quality proteins like beef with plant-based options. NCBA's Ethan Lane called the suggestions "out-of-touch" and “dangerous,” pointing out that beans and lentils can't fully replace the nutrients beef provides. Dr. Shalene McNeill, NCBA's Executive Director of Nutrition Science, emphasized that while beef makes up only 5% of calories in the American diet, it supplies over 5% of essential nutrients like iron, B12, and protein. These recommendations, part of the 2025-2030 Dietary Guidelines process, will be reviewed by USDA and HHS. Arkansas Beef Council Names Best Burger The Arkansas Beef Council announced Bailey's Family Restaurant in Cave City as the winner of the inaugural Arkansas's Best Burger Contest with their Caveman Burger. Selected from over 2,400 nominations across 410+ burgers, the contest's top ten burgers — two from each of the state's five regions — were judged on taste, appearance, cooking, and overall impression by an anonymous panel. The Caveman Burger stands out with a massive two-pound beef patty on a nine-inch bun, available as a double with optional cheese or bacon. Arkansas Secretary of Agriculture Wes Ward noted that the contest highlighted Arkansans' love for quality beef and local restaurants. The Arkansas Beef Council continues to support beef's image and Arkansas's cattle industry through promotional and research efforts. Serving delicious, homestyle meals, Jusino's Family Restaurant recently celebrated their grand opening in Follensbee, West Virginia. Owner Robert Jusino says he has finally achieved his dream of having his own restaurant. He started out nearly 30 years ago as a prep cook and worked his way up to executive chef and running a few restaurants around the area. “Then I decided this was my passion, this is my dream and with a little help from some very good friends, we were able to make this happen,” he said. The restaurant is open seven days a week, serving breakfast and lunch. Check out Jusinos's Family Restaurant on Facebook to view their menu. Business leaders from the construction, real estate, and baking industries were in attendance to learn about the act and how the north central region of West Virginia, specifically the area within 20 miles of Browns Mill, was one of 16 regions throughout the state selected for this program. Meghan Smith, manager of business development for the West Virginia Department of Economic Development, said that when a new manufacturer moves to the area, they need to recruit workers. And recruiting workers requires the area to have adequate housing, so the Build WV Act is trying to spur the construction of that housing. Creepypasta Scary Story
Bobby “Dues” Wilson is a Sisseton-Wahpeton Dakota artist, dad, and comedian based in Phoenix, Arizona. Bobby was born and raised in the Twin Cities, back when you could still smoke at Ember's Family Restaurant. Bobby's family bounced around motels, apartments, Powwows and shelters through his childhood but there's an olde saying amongst the Siouxan nations: shit happens. Wilson attended the Creative Arts High School where his interests in painting and poetry were heavily encouraged. He participated in youth art programs COMPAS arts in St. Paul, then rode the 16 (94 if you're cashy) to Minneapolis where he trained mural painting like a champ under Roger and Peyton at Juxtaposition Arts. He painted several murals around the Twin Cities and enough graffiti to catch a couple cases. His visual art work can still be seen at the Minnesota Historical Society (I think) and the Chippewa Tribes building on Franklin. After some heavy life changes that we won't get into it here (go watch Smoke Signals or something), Bobby found himself alongside the 1491s comedy troupe, traveling all accrosst Indian Country making fun of himself for money. Now Bobby works as a writer/producer on television series like Rutherford Falls, Echo (some MCU stuff?), and the Peabody award winning series, Reservation Dogs. He lives with his family, surrounded by the O'odham nations and urban Navajos who make really good tortillas! Did you know O'odham homies call frybread, “popovers?!” What even is that?!
10:00 - Dawn breaks the news of an active shooter situation in Louisville Kentucky which she will update as information becomes available. She then moves to an Easter Sunday fire which devastated families in Parkesburg. 10:05 - Dawn puts it in perspective about what fires can do to people but how a community will rally around those affected. 10:10 - She moves to an update on the shooting at the Christiana Mall, where shots were fired over a dispute. Sadly this is just more of the same coming from that mall. How was your Easter? 10:20 - There's outrage over Michael's Family Restaurant over forcing a Muslim worker to remove her hijab to work there. Dawn speaks personally on the situation as this is a place she has frequented and has seen other Muslim workers thrive there, so why the sudden change? 10:25 - What's your take on that situation? 10:30 - Just be respectful! 10:35 - Have you seen the new Mario Movie? It's smashing the box office lately. 10:45 - Did you guys see SNL this weekend? Funny or sacrilegious? Also why not poke more fun at KJP and Biden? 10:50 - There's still asbestos in our schools? Now it's forcing surprise online learning to local families which is causing an outrage. 11:00 - We return to the press conference regarding the shooting in Louisville and what their Deputy Chief and Mayor have to report on the matter. 11:10 - Why is the city dragging its feet on its police oversight committee? It is completely infuriating. We turn to Philly lifer Jim Kelly on his take on what this proud city has become. 11:20 - Dawn then turns to your calls about gun violence and different opinions on that matter as well as policing. Very spirited debates. 11:40 - Dawn comes back from the break discussing more violence within the city and rebutting a previous caller's statements. 11:50 - Dawn finishes on a lighter note about a church community coming together for the first time since the building had burned down the year prior. Then we move to what Easter means to Philadelphians, including dinner, flowers, and family.

Chef and serial restaurateur Greg Baxtrom is behind acclaimed Prospect Heights staples Olmsted, Maison Yaki and relative newcomer Patti Ann's Family Restaurant and Baker. A little over a week ago he launched a fourth restaurant — in Rockefeller Center. He joins the podcast today to discuss his mini empire and how discovered he wanted to be a chef in the first place — turns out learning how to make beef stew in the Boy Scouts had something to do with it. We talk about his resume, which is impressive by design (Per Se, Blue Hill at Stone Barns, etc.) and he walks us through his many pandemic pivots. Baxtrom breaks down the culinary scene at large, food trends that bore him, learning to not be one of those asshole chefs and where he eats when he's not working, which is not very often. When the eldest son of owners Vartkes and Margerit, Mardiros, wanted to open more locations his parents agreed as long as they didn't have to own or run the additional restaurants. The family became a great success. Why then, a year after a terminal cancer diagnosis, did Mardiros wake up one day, grab two guns, and drive to his sisters house killing both her and his mother before turning the gun on himself?
