In today's episode we talk to Steven Reigns — poet, educator, and author of one of my favorite books of poetry, A Quilt For David. This book came to me during an extremely difficult bout of insomnia, and I read it in one sitting. Which says a lot because I'm a slow reader. We get into all of that in this interview as well as Steven's lifelong love affair with writer Anais Nin. (Steven is the President of The Anais Nin Foundation.) We also get into his latest work, ‘For The Love of Peter Hujar,' a zine dedicated to the life of photographer Peter Hujar, published by Mattazine Society, as part of their ongoing ‘For The Love Of' series. MORE ABOUT STEVEN Steven Reigns is a Los Angeles poet and educator and was appointed the first Poet Laureate of West Hollywood. Alongside over a dozen chapbooks, he has published the collections Inheritance and Your Dead Body is My Welcome Mat. Reigns holds a BA in Creative Writing, a Master of Clinical Psychology, and is a sixteen-time recipient of The Los Angeles County's Department of Cultural Affairs' Artist in Residency Grant. He edited My Life is Poetry, showcasing his students' work from the first-ever autobiographical poetry workshop for LGBT seniors. Reigns has lectured and taught writing workshops around the country to LGBT youth and people living with HIV. Currently he is touring The Gay Rub, an exhibition of rubbings from LGBT landmarks, and is board president of the Anais Nin Foundation. His newest collection A Quilt for David was published by City Lights and is the product of over ten years of research regarding dentist David Acer's life. Host, Adam Sommer, is joined by Steven Reigns, a poet & author to discuss Steven's latest project "A Quilt For David" - a sincere attempt to tell the full story surrounding David Acer, a dentist in Florida accused of infecting his patients with HIV in the early 1990's, the first allegation coming while David lay dying of his own AIDS related illness. As a gay man at the time, David's illness made him an obvious target for blame. David didn't get a chance to complete his own defense, to tell his own story. Steven's decade of work attempts to do just that. Dennis connects via Zoom with poet Steven Reigns to discuss his new book A Quilt for David, which explores through poetry the story of David Acer, the dentist from Treasure Cove, Florida who was accused by multiple people of giving them HIV through dental work in the early 1990s. The story made national news, led to several $1 million-plus insurance settlements and turned David into a convenient scapegoat for a nation wary of gay people and terrified of AIDS. Steven talks about the book's mixture of poetry and investigative reporting, going to Florida to research and interview people who were around at the time and his goal with the project of humanizing David Acer. He also recites two of the poems from the book. www.aquiltfordavid.com
In a small conservative Florida town in the 1980s, eight patients alleged that Dr. David Acer, their dentist, infected them with HIV. David's gayness, along with his sickly appearance from his own AIDS-related illness, made him the perfect scapegoat and victim of mob mentality. In these early years of the AIDS epidemic, when transmission was little understood, and homophobia rampant, people like David were villainized. Accuser Kimberly Bergalis landed a People magazine cover story, while others went on talk shows and made front page news. With a poet's eulogistic and psychological intensity, Steven Reigns recovers the life and death of this man who also stands in for so many lives destroyed not only by HIV, but a diseased society that used stigma against the most vulnerable. It's impossible not to make connections between this story and how the twenty- first century pandemic has also been defined by medical misinformation and cultural bias.Inspired by years of investigative research into the lives of David and those who denounced him, Reigns has stitched together a hauntingly poetic narrative that retraces an American history, questioning the fervor of his accusers, and recuperating a gay life previously shrouded in secrecy and shame.Host James Lott Jr chats with Steven about the process for this book, its subject matter and the feeligns it evokes. stevenreigns.com aquiltfordavid.com

On this special Pride month podcast, Dennis handles the audio editing on this one as he welcomes past podcast guest Steven Reigns to present a project he produced about the legendary disco star Sylvester's Los Angeles roots. Here's the official synopsis: Born in Watts, Los Angeles, to a middle-class African-American family, Sylvester developed a love of singing through the gospel choir of his church. Leaving the church after the congregation expressed disapproval of his homosexuality, he found friendship among a group of black cross-dressers and transgender women who called themselves The Disquotays. He made an impact in music, fashion, personal expression and also on those he befriended even before his fame. Hear about Sylvester's influence to a previous West Hollywood resident who grew up with him, Tiki Lofton. Tiki met Sylvester, then known as Dooni, and that friendship influenced her life. Listen to her tales of growing up black and trans in LA in the 60s as a part of the Disquotays with a good friend that soon became a disco superstar. Sylvester biographer Joshua Gamson is featured as well. This program is presented with the support of a grant from the City of West Hollywood's Arts Division as part of the City's One City One Pride LGBTQ Arts Festival. Steven Reigns, Los Angeles poet and educator, was appointed the first Poet Laureate of West Hollywood. He has two previous collections, Inheritance and Your Dead Body is My Welcome Mat, and over a dozen chapbooks. Dennis visits the West Hollywood apartment of poet and teacher Steven Reigns, AKA the Poet Laureate of West Hollywood, to talk about how he got that title, what it means and why he's always loved poetry. Steven also talks about growing up in St. Louis, moving to Florida after high school, losing his older gay mentor to AIDS, his love of libraries and his obsession with Anais Nin. Steven reads a couple of his poems, both love poems in a way, and talks about what it's been like to teach poetry to people living with HIV and LGBT seniors and the LA LGBT Center. Other topics include: Steven's love for the movie "Living Out Loud," what his parents think about his work, his writing process and that time he hosted and produced a show all about a-holes, literally. www.stevenreigns.com
My guest this week is Steven Reigns. Among his many yous is the first city poet of West Hollywood. There's one writer who's had a profound impact on Steven's artistic identity, his personal identity, and even his sexual identity. He discovered Anais Nin work at a pivotal time in his life, when he felt pulled in multiple directions and was unsure what direction his life could take. It was thanks to a lucky loan of a book that Anais appeared to point the way.

Humans have written about, talked about, sang about broken hearts and first loves and all the clichés that go with them, through the ages. But, we do not so often hear about the moment of awakening that comes with a positive, self-affirming romantic encounter -one that propels us further down the path of self love. We hear from writer Steven Reigns with a tribute to gay love and acceptance and from writer/performer Gabriela Garcia Medina with a poem about empowerment over pervasive pop music messages that try to keep a woman down. We also speak with anthropologist, Dr. Ysamur Flores-Peña about the origins of the St. Valentine’s Day and about love from romantic to divine.
Inheritance (Lethe Press) A launch party for the latest poetry collection by this acclaimed local poet! "Steven Reigns explores the inexhaustible power of family to affect our lives and loves, and does so in a candid yet passionate manner remarkable for its evocative and wounding moments." --Wanda Coleman, author of Heavy Daughter Blues and Mercurochrome: New Poems "This is such a naked book. It falls neatly into no school of poetry, nor does 'gay poetry' sum it up. I turned the pages of Inheritance pretty hungrily, glad to encounter such honesty about a gay life lived with pleasure and bitterness and companionability." --Eileen Myles, author of Sorry, Tree and Skies Steven Reigns is a Los Angeles-based poet and educator. His newest collection, Inheritance, came out in 2010 by Lethe Press. After earning a degree in Creative Writing at the University of South Florida, he published his début poetry collection, Your Dead Body is My Welcome Mat, in 2001. Since then, Reigns has published four chapbooks: Ignited, Cartography, In the Room, and As if Memories Were Not Enough. A two-time recipient of The Los Angeles County's Department of Cultural Affairs' Artist in Residency Grant, Reigns organized and taught the first-ever autobiography poetry workshop for GLBT seniors and edited an anthology of their writings, My Life is Poetry.
