Sugarfire is a BBQ staple in St. Louis. From their brisket to their wild named specials, there's a reason they've been winning awards for over a decade. Now we had owner Mike Johnson on the Meet St. Louis podcast way back in the beginning. All the way back on episode 50. So now, on Episode 271 we're revisiting the beloved BBQ spot. But this time were talking to the woman of Sugarfire. The 14th location just opened in Florissant, and it's the first with a majority female ownership group. Corporate Chef Kat Wallace, Director of Hospitality Veronica Schuster and Operations Manager Montana Patterson. The three sat down to talk about working in a male-dominated industry, how they work together as a team and the launch of the first Sugarfire location in North County.

When you hear SugarFire, your mind and your taste buds are likely thinking barbeque, but half of the business comes from Carolyn Downs' sweets. She's been baking for decades and if you've eaten at some of St. Louis' favorite restaurants, you've likely fallen for her bread pudding or cakes or her pies. Or her pake. What's a pake? Well it's a pie inside of a cake. And right now it's getting a national spotlight thanks to the Cooking Channel show Cheat Day USA. Carolyn works alongside her husband who brought back the beloved Cyrano's Café in Webster Groves and alongside Chef and restauranteur Mike Johnson, together they opened the first Sugar Fire Smoke House in 2012. Mike handled the fire…Carolyn the sugar. They've expanded across the St Louis area and across the country to bring St Louis BBQ and the perfect desserts to pair with them, to an even bigger audience. But it all started small, and Carolyn joined us this week to talk about those early days and how she talked her pies into some of the kitchens around town. Chris is back from injury!!! On this week's episode of Stoned Appetit, we trekked up to the burbs of North Denver to "Smoke the good stuff" with the founders of Sugarfire Smokehouse. The gang sat down with Chad & Jamie and their team. We shot the shit about slinging meat, how they got in the business and then the usual debauchery. These guys were an absolute hoot as we talked how they created the menu (highlighting the best of the BBQ genres around the country) and their history in the industry. After we talk all things Que, we dive into some hard hitting questions like what the CO food scene is missing, how the barbecue scene is portrayed by outsiders and then our usuals like Answer The Internet style questions, and their favorite Denver (Boulder too) dives. Great guests, delicious snacks and fantastic episode.
