I spent this Summer Solstice at the Last Hope Camp, located by Beal's Brook in the Kespukwitk district of Mi'kma'ki (Nova Scotia) on the unceded and ancestral territory of the Mi'kmaq people. A special celebration was happening to mark the solstice, Indigenous People's Day in Canada, and a victory for the protection of this forest. Extinction Rebellion and others had been based in this forest since last December to protect it from being logged. Due to the at-risk species of lichen that they found, the majority of the forest is now off-bounds to logging, and the Forest Protectors have taken down the camp and declared a win. This episode is a compilation of different people offering their insights and reflections about how their involvement in Last Hope Camp affected them. During the last part of this show, we get an update from Nina Newington, one of the people who offered incredible dedication and creativity towards the protection of this forest, and learn how and why the Last Hope Camp is transitioning to a broader movement, the Last Hope Campaign. Get a feel for what it was like at the camp, why so many people came together, the strong community that formed, and what was achieved. For anyone who feels overwhelmed and despairing due to all the interconnected world challenges, find some hope here! We don't always know at first how to help or make a difference, or what an ultimate solution will be, but we can certainly find “the next right thing to do”, and build community with others doing that as well.EPISODE RESOURCES:Facebook pages for news on the Last Hope Campaign-Bioblitz Mi'kma'ki (Nova Scotia)Extinction Rebellion Mi'kma'ki/Nova ScotiaXR email address: xrns@riseup.netCBC Information Morning interview with Nina Newington on June 22/22 Also, see Shared Ground episodes 1 and 2 for more about Last Hope Camp

Dr. Rosalind Tompkins has a lively discussion and Hope Chat with Citizen of Hope Aaronetta Frison about the life and legacy of her mother, the late, great, Rev. Dr. Berynce Clausell. She also shares what it means to be a Citizen of Hope. WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A CITIZEN OF HOPE: A citizen is one who is registered to dwell in a certain location and is a legally recognized resident of that locale. I, Aaronetta Clausell Frison am a citizen of HOPE. I am registered through Pay Pal to dwell there and am a legally recognized citizen, evidenced by my close affiliation to Dr. Rosalind Y. Tompkins and her works. I became attached to Dr. Tompkins when my mother, Rev. Dr. Bernyce Clausell, announced at a Black History program that Dr. Tompkins was her role Model. I was going through some issues of life and HOPE dwelled in me. But after going through life coaching, mentorship, and seminary school with Dr Tompkins, now I dwell in HOPE. I live there, HOPE is my home. Being a citizen has its privileges. As a citizen of HOPE, I can browse the HOPE UNIVERSE website at any time to keep abreast of events, resources, great HOPE thoughts, interviews, poetry, mission trips/projects. Being a citizen of HOPE gives me access to Dr. Rosalind Tompkins for life coaching, counseling, HOPE chats and prayer. Being a citizen of HOPE keeps me in the know of her speaking engagements, radio/tv interviews, Podcasts and Broadcasts. Being a citizen of HOPE enables me to be empowered to help myself and others by spreading the message of HOPE one person at a time. Retired college teacher and playwright Swithin Fry returns to the show to share an update regarding the poignant story of his penpal correspondence with Tim, a convict on Ohio's Death Row. From his vantage point in the United Kingdom, Swithin became aware of the difficulties Tim has faced seeking a retrial, leading to Swithin visiting Tim in prison and launching "Tim's Hope Campaign". Swithin has been corresponding with Tim since 2011. In Swithin's words: "But the more I read, the more I became convinced that Timothy Coleman is innocent. He was no saint at the time, but I do believe he did not commit the murder for which he is now facing execution." Tim has applied to The Exoneration Project to ask that details of his case be reviewed. Swithin has created a one-man play about his journey with Tim which he has performed to wonderful reviews in the U.K. Swithin Fry's web site: EchoesofTim.com Frontier Beyond Fear music copyrighted by Grammy award winner Larry Seyer, www.larryseyer.com, included in this podcast with his permission.
Playwright and performer Swithin Fry shares the poignant story of his penpal correspondence with Tim, a convict on Ohio's Death Row. From his vantage point in the United Kingdom, Swithin became aware of the difficulties Tim has faced seeking a retrial, leading to Swithin visiting Tim in prison and launching "Tim's Hope Campaign". In Swithin's words..."I'm not saying they are all innocent; I'm not saying that Tim is innocent - though I believe he is. I'm saying the death penalty is wrong, morally wrong, the same way that killing is wrong, morally wrong. Tim is seeking a retrial. Nothing more, nothing less." On March 1, Swithin debuted a monologue he wrote about his experience visiting Tim, performed at a major regional theater in England. Swithin hopes to take this on tour in America. Swithin and host Susan Larison Danz discuss how as a civilized, enlightened society, we must humanize our understanding of "justice" in consideration of the accused, the convicted and the victims. Compassion, conscience and truth can set our society free.
