Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia. Today is Sunday, Sept. 1, 2024. WV small businesses, here's your chance to connect to supplier opportunities at an expo hosted by MAMC and Advantage Valley…federal and state grant programs help landowners protect the Chesapeake Bay Watershed…and … is Mothman real? You be the judge!…on today's daily304. #1 – From REGISTER-HERALD – The Marshall Advanced Manufacturing Center and Advantage Valley will present an Industrial Supplier Expo Sept. 26 from 9 a.m. to noon at Valley Park in Hurricane. The expo will connect West Virginia small businesses to supplier opportunities with large industries while providing an opportunity for large companies to shorten their supply chains by sourcing goods and services locally. The event is free but registration is required. Visit MAMC online to sign up. Owners Hope and Bev Yankey are committed to keeping it that way so native brook trout might one day thrive downstream. The conservation-minded couple turned to Trout Unlimited and its Potomac Headwaters Home Rivers Initiative for help. Brook trout's sensitivity to water temperature and conditions make them an excellent indicator of stream health. That's why the Chesapeake Bay Watershed Agreement made restoring brook trout a goal of the federal-state effort to clean up the Bay and its tributaries. The work can be expensive and complicated. Fortunately, an array of federal and state grant programs exists to help cover the costs and provide technical expertise to landowners, like the Yankeys, who want to protect valuable natural resources on their property. The goal is “to regenerate and let the land come back. The farm provided a living and now it's time to give back,” Hope Yankey said. Most recently, the mythic Mothman creature has received its very own “Unsolved Mysteries” episode on Netflix. But the Mothman was well known long before the popular Netflix reboot came to be. Thanks to “The Mothman Prophecies” movie in 2002 starring Richard Gere and Laura Linney, the phenomenon is now part of pop culture, Wamsley says. Wamsley, who is also the author of “Mothman: Behind the Red Eyes” and co-author of “Mothman: The Facts behind the Legend” shares the Mothman's eerie origin story, which dates back to November 1966 when the Silver Bridge collapsed. Is Mothman real? Get the scoop from the Today show. And make plans to attend the annual Mothman Festival, set for Sept. 21-22 in Point Pleasant! Mark Osmack has been out of the electoral fray for awhile, but he never completely abandoned his passion for Missouri politics. Osmack, a Valley Park native and U.S. Army veteran, previously ran for Missouri's 2nd Congressional District seat and for state Senate. During an episode of Politically Speaking, Osmack received a phone call from Missouri Democratic Party Chairman Russ Carnahan asking him to run for state treasurer. “There's a lot of decision making and processing and evaluation that goes into it, which is something I am very passionate and interested in,” Osmack said. Osmack is squaring off against state Treasurer Vivek Malek, who was able to easily win a crowded GOP primary against several veteran lawmakers — including House Chairman Cody Smith and Sen. Andrew Koenig.

The Martinsburg shop is owned and operated by a father and son team who are passionate about the craft of cutting and styling hair. Owner Austin Hale, a third generation barber, believes the barber shop is more than just a place to get a haircut. It's a time honored American tradition and should serve as a pillar for the community. However, traditions don't survive through the generations without people who care about passing them on. To pass along the business of barbering to his children, Hale found that he needed more than just passion – he needed funding. Hale connected with the West Virginia Small Business Development Center and WV SBDC Business Coach Michael Boyd, who helped him create a business plan and find a lender. “Because of the SBDC we are able to keep barbing in our family for a third generation with me and will hopefully continue on with a fourth generation with my kids,” Hale said. The Context of White Supremacy welcomes Dr. Geoff K. Ward. Gus T. and listeners were confused about Dr. Ward's racial classification. After some prodding, Dr. Ward conceded that he has one non-white biological parent and one White biological parent. He was adopted by a black family and was not informed about his biological parents until much later in life. He mentioned that because of his pale complexion, he was not subjected to the same types of abuse as darker black males when he was alone. Dr. Ward was prepared to discuss how other black people have challenged his status as “black.” He did not provide one example of someone classified as White practicing Racism against him. A professor of African and African American Studies and a faculty affiliate in American culture studies and sociology at Washington University in St. Louis, Dr. Ward studies “the legacies of racial violence, representative social control, and the racial politics of youth justice.” He's also a member of the Reparative Justice Coalition, which, as Gus understands it, works to recognize and remember acts of White Terrorism perpetuated against black people. Gus heard Dr. Ward's commentary regarding the 1894 lynching of John Buckner in Valley Park, Missouri. Current-day White residents staunchly reject planting a memorial in the town because: One, Buckner was a black male rapist. Two, said negro rapist was not lynched in Valley Park. Dr. Ward studies how the history of White Terrorism had a myriad of current impacts on areas such a corporal punishment of school children and black homicide rates. We'll also discuss his fascinating study of one of Gus's favorite areas of research: Racist Jokes. Dr. Ward details how mocking black people helps unify the White race. We spent substantial time discussing whether it's permissible and most accurate to say that White people “lie” to maintain the System of White Supremacy. #WhiteIgnorance #TheCOWS14Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#

The Context of White Supremacy hosts the weekly Compensatory Call-In 10/14/23. We encourage non-white listeners to dial in with their codified concepts, new terms, observations, research findings, workplace problems or triumphs, and/or suggestions on how best to Replace White Supremacy With Justice ASAP. This weekly broadcast examines current events from across the globe to learn what's happening in all areas of people activity. We cultivate Counter-Racist Media Literacy by scrutinizing journalists' word choices and using logic to deconstruct what is reported as "news." We'll use these sessions to hone our use of terms as tools to reveal truth, neutralize Racists/White people. #ANTIBLACKNESS Conflict between people classified as White in the area of the world known as Israel and non-white people in the area of the world known as Palestine has the entire planet responding to this violence. The group known as Hamas, often reported as non-white people, are routinely cited as “terrorists,” while Racist Suspects in Israel are described as “retaliating” or defending themselves. We'll also hear about the 20th century of John Buckner, who was killed by Race Soldiers in Missouri. Citizens of Valley Park, Missouri, population 85% White, assert that Buckner was not lynched within their jurisdiction and they staunchly oppose memorializing a negro male accused of rape. We also hear about the murder of Jenean Chapman, assistant to the Duchess of York and a fatal victim of a Tragic Arrangement. Her estranged White partner, 48-year-old James Michael Patrick, has been arrested and charged with Chapman's death. We'll also ponder new reports that suggests an extraordinary drop in school attendance since the return to in person learning. #TheCOWS14Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#
A mob lynched a 24-year-old Black man named John Buckner in 1894. That's not disputed. But it's the location of Buckner's lynching that's creating controversy in Valley Park. Geoff Ward, a professor of African and African American Studies at Washington University and a member of the Reparative Justice Coalition, discusses the killing of John Buckner and how the record shows he was killed in Valley Park. Elizabeth Simons, community program manager for Great Rivers Greenway, describes the group's plan to install a plaque on the Meramec Greenway.

Today's Destination is: Philadelphia Today's Mistake- Getting in the wrong line Travel Advice: Let's both win through travel. FAQ: Where can I travel pretty far and well on a smaller budget? Answer: Traveling a long distance should not be the end goal, but if you are looking for a Step 5 travel experience, here's an idea good for a smaller budget. You can see a lot in Thailand on a shoestring budget. It's got plenty of airlines serving the country plus you can get around in the main cities via public transportation. So consider going here for your next trip. It is a tropical island, so consider that it will be humid and rainy often. You may need to cool off in a beachy resort, and know that you can find great deals. You can get an awesome massage for a small fee here, so that will be my suggestion. You could afford one every day you visit. Pamper yourself here. Today's destination is Philadelphia, Pennsylvania The city of Brotherly Love is what Philly is known for, the 6th largest US city. And cheestakes. You as a traveler will want to see the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, and where the Declaration of Independence and US Constitution were signed. You will also like the American Revolutionary sites. It's a step 1 or step 2 city of the 5 steps to solo travel. More recent fame is for the run to the top of the staircase where in the movie “Rocky”, the movie is, with Sylvester Stallone working out, which is the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The theme music still rings in my head for that great film. Da da da da …. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ZCO40Zwt00 The region not only has American history and arts, but also a lot of traditional foods and activities. Philly has the most outdoor sculptures and murals than any other US city per capita. find them in all parts of town. Fairmount Park, Wissa hickon Valley Park are two examples of parks in the city. How many tourists visit? 42 million in 2016 who spent nearly $7 Billion that year. Phillies, Eagles, 76ers and plenty of other sports keep fans hoping for winning seasons here. Catch a game if you are in town. Some neighborhoods are best during the daytime, because there can be danger at nighttime if you're not familiar with the inner city areas. Some are less safe than others, like any large city. Some travelers combine Philadelphia with Amish Country, which was episode 136. Other people combine Philly with a visit to Washington, DC, episode 177 and even New York, episodes 100 and 101. I spoke to Chrissy Watts, who is a Phily tour guide. Today's Mistake- Getting in the wrong line If you are solo, it's not so easy to lineup like if you have a partner. If you have a partner, one can stand in line and the other can find out if it's the right line by asking someone in charge. Once I waited in line at the airport for an airline ticket, but could have easily ordered it on my phone. Just because everyone is lining up doesn't meet you should. If you can, consider how you can navigate the situation on your phone with an app. If you are lining up in person and can't use the app, they ask someone in front of you to save your place in line and get agreement. Today's Travel Advice-.Let's both win! When you have a successful trip, I win. Let me know where you traveled, where you had the best time and what to look forward to next.

It is 3am. At the water's edge, the shadows are thick. A single star reflects in the ink black water, bobbed by passing ripples. The wide-open waterscape is alive with the sound of birds, swimming and calling, drippling the surface of the water for food, cleaning their wings, landing and taking off. Something creeps through the foliage nearby, perhaps a swan in search of a place to settle. The air's still balmy from the hot day before. Soft breezes come and go, rustling the leaves of the over-hanging trees. In woodland across the lake, muntjacs invisibly call to each other, their dog-like barks carrying easily over the water. Miles beyond, undulating waves of traffic flow along the A10, sounding sometimes like distant wind. This recording was made in July. Microphones were hidden in a tree on the edge of the lake and left to record all night. The location was hidden away from the path, tucked down a shallow bank behind dense trees, nettles and brambles. A special spot known only to birds, insects and mammals.

Pima County Supervisor supported taxpayers paying $90K to clean up a donated out of business golf course that will cost taxpayers $70K-$90K annually to maintain. His reason was Supervisor Ally Miller's district has 17 parks and his has just three. He wanted to stop paying for her district's parks to be maintained. You have to hear it.
