Harry and Daniel settle in with a nice luke warm bowl of shark soup and are once again joined by author Shawn Levy to delve into Noah Baumbach's “The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected)”, a darkly comic portrait of a fractured Jewish family in New York. With standout performances from Adam Sandler, Ben Stiller, Dustin Hoffman, and Emma Thompson, the film explores themes of sibling rivalry, parental expectations, and the burden of legacy. The hosts unpack Baumbach's signature style, the film's Jewish sensibility, and what it reveals about art, memory, and the bonds of family.Meyerwitz Stories on IMDBMeyerwitz Stories trailer Shawn Levy's LinksGet Shawn's latest book, “Clint”Follow Shawn Levy on instagramListen to the Glitter & Might series about Lew WassermanFind other books by Shawn LevyConnect with Jews on Film online:Jews on Film Merch - https://jews-on-film.printify.me/productsInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/jewsonfilm/Twitter - https://twitter.com/jewsonfilmpodYouTube - https://www.youtube.com/@jewsonfilmTikTok - https://www.tiktok.com/@jewsonfilmpod

Welcome to The Reel Schmooze with ToI film reviewer Jordan Hoffman and host Amanda Borschel-Dan, where we bring you all the entertainment news and film reviews a Jew can use. This week, the pair speaks about two new movies, the feature film, "Jay Kelly," and the short documentary "Carol & Joy." But first, we hear in this week’s “Jangle” segment, an update on a story from last week regarding one of the Holocaust survivors featured in the film, "Eleanor the Great," Sami Steigmann, who was asked not to speak at a Brooklyn middle school about antisemitism due to his pro-Israel views. Our second Jangle involves the impending sale of Warner Bros Studio. Hoffman has some passionate thoughts. We then speak about "Jay Kelly," a 2025 comedy-drama directed by Noah Baumbach and written by Baumbach and Emily Mortimer. For Borschel-Dan, it was a screening in two sleepy parts that ended with a "meh" rating. Hoffman was (slightly) kinder. Both were united in their appreciation for the documentary, "Carol & Joy," directed by Nathan Silver and starring actress Carol Kane and her 98-year-old mother, Joy Kane. It is a delight of a film and... executive produced by a The Reel Schmooze regular, Natalie Portman. Hear which film got a seal of approval on this week's The Reel Schmooze.
Sean and Amanda cover Noah Baumbach's new film, ‘Jay Kelly,' starring George Clooney and Adam Sandler. They work through their mixed reactions to the movie and sort through specifically what worked for them and what didn't (4:24). Then, they speculate Sandler's potential award chances (41:33) before building his Hall of Fame with their favorite performances (53:50). Finally, Sean is joined by Baumbach to explain why he doesn't enjoy revisiting his old work, why Clooney was perfect for the part of Jay, and whether his films are getting funnier or more tragic with age (1:49:39). The filmmaker Noah Baumbach can recall when he may have fallen out of love with his craft. He was shooting “White Noise,” based on Don DeLillo's novel, “on a deserted highway in Ohio at 4 A.M. with a rain machine.” “Oh, God, I don't know that I like doing this,” he recalls thinking. “Am I doing this”—making movies—“only because I do it?” He channelled that angst into his new film “Jay Kelly,” a Hollywood comedy of manners starring George Clooney as a very famous movie star who suddenly wonders whether it was all worth it, and why people keep offering him cheesecake. In October, Baumbach spoke with The New Yorker's articles editor, Susan Morrison, at The New Yorker Festival about working with his wife, Greta Gerwig, on “Barbie,” and why the first lines of his movies can tell you everything. New episodes of The New Yorker Radio Hour drop every Tuesday and Friday. Join host David Remnick as he discusses the latest in politics, news, and current events in conversation with political leaders, newsmakers, innovators, New Yorker staff writers, authors, actors, and musicians.

This week we're excited to present a special conversation from the 63rd New York Film Festival between filmmakers Joachim Trier and Noah Baumbach, moderated by Film at Lincoln Center programmer Maddie Whittle. This Talk is sponsored by Deadline. NYFF veterans Noah Baumbach and Joachim Trier returned to the festival this year with a pair of films that explore how artistry, authenticity, and artifice collide in the public and private lives of star actors and famed filmmakers. In Baumbach's charmingly reflexive Jay Kelly, an aging megastar—played, fittingly, by George Clooney—arrives at a crisis point in his career; haunted by the past and uninspired by the present, he embarks on a somewhat reckless screwball adventure with his entourage (featuring Adam Sandler and Laura Dern) in tow. Meanwhile, Trier's Sentimental Value finds an acclaimed stage actress (Renate Reinsve) and her estranged movie-director father (Stellan Skarsgård) clashing, connecting, and introspecting over a film project that draws from their complicated lives. Dramatizing the dimensions of modern-day, larger-than-life celebrity with deft humor, both films hone in on the relationships—familial, professional, transactional—that undergird the creative process and industrial artmaking. Baumbach and Trier joined NYFF63 for a lively, probing discussion of their approaches to writing grounded, lived-in characters, and the collaborations that have shaped their own illustrious bodies of work. The 63rd New York Film Festival is presented in partnership with Rolex.

Roll film! In Episode 23, DDSWTNP continue our White Noise residency by heading to the movies (or the TV screen) and examining Noah Baumbach's 2022 film adaptation of the novel. We discuss the drive over the years to adapt the supposedly “unadaptable” DeLillo for the screen, the 2020s context of this film, and our varied reactions to successive viewings of it over the two-plus years since its release. Other topics include the central performances (especially Adam Driver as an unexpectedly good Jack Gladney and Don Cheadle as a refashioned Murray Siskind); Baumbach's successes and failures at re-ordering DeLillo's dialogue and visually distilling certain themes; and his shaping of the narrative as a “meta-cinematic” journey through his personal film history and a mixture of genres. Reviews by Tom LeClair, Marco Roth, and Jesse Kavadlo figure in our analysis, and we close by considering whether we do in fact “need a new body” in the film's concluding supermarket song and dance number, which in our view captures some of the novel's themes and distorts others. We'd love to hear on Instagram or email what you think of the film and our reactions, too! We also take a little time to correct a historical error in our Episode 19 on Rachel Kushner's Creation Lake. Texts and sources for this episode: White Noise (dir. Noah Baumbach, 2022) (Netflix). After weeks of finishing up 2023, complete with last week's The Deucie Awards, it's finally time to bring in the rundown of all the movies seen in recent weeks (and months)... as Timberlake would sing, "IT'S GONNA BE MAY... The awards season is almost over - we've got a few days until the Academy Awards, and another day or so after until the nominations for the real awards, the Deucies Until then, it's time to talk about the films that have been viewed, seen, watched, absorbed and enjoyed in the last month or so... and on the heels of the biggest movies the year -- Dune 2 -- its time to talk about it! First up, a few birthday movies - what did come out in March in 2019, 2014, 1994, 1979 and so on... including the first mention of "Wing Commander" in what is likely a very long time. Then, we dive right in, showcasing classic movies like "Safety Last" and "Gimme Shelter" and Oscar bait, like "Maestro" and "Strays" and fresh on the screen, like "Spaceman" and yes, the full review of the crapfests known as "Argylle" and "Madame Web". Plus, Rachel McAdams in a period piece... Dr Earl enjoying the Barb... why Michael hates "May December" so much... and could Carey Mulligan make every single thing she's in just that much better? The impact that Blake Snyder's Save the Cat® book series has had on Hollywood screenwriting is incalculable. Rarely does a book change the way screenwriters approach story and structure. In his best-selling book, Save the Cat! Goes to the Movies: The Screenwriter's Guide to Every Story Ever Told, Blake Snyder provided 50 “beat sheets” to 50 films, mostly studio-made.Now his student, screenwriter and novelist Salva Rubio applies Blake's principles to 50 independent, auteur, European, and cult films (again with 5 beat sheets for each of Blake's 10 genres in the book Save the Cat!® Goes to the Indies: The Screenwriters Guide to 50 Films from the Masters. If you're a moviegoer, you'll discover a language to analyze film and understand how filmmakers can effectively reach audiences. If you're a writer, this book reveals how those who came before you tackled the same challenges you are facing with the films you want to write. Writing a “rom-com”? Check out the “Buddy Love” chapter for a “beat for beat” dissection of Before Sunrise, The Reader, Blue Is the Warmest Color, and more to see how Linklater and Krizan, David Hare, and Kechiche and Lacroix structured their films.Scripting a horror film? Read the “Monster in the House” section and discover how 28 Days Later and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre are the same movie – and what you need to do to write a scary story that keeps audiences on the edge of their seats.Want to execute a great mystery? Go to the “Whydunit” chapter and learn about the “dark turn” that's essential to the heroes of The Big Lebowski, The French Connection, and Michael Clayton.Want your protagonist to go up against an evil “institution”? Consider how Mamet handled Glengarry Glen Ross and Tarantino's famed Pulp Fiction.Writing a “Superhero” story? See how Susannah Grant structured Erin Brockovich, Anderson & Baumbach worked out Fantastic Mr. Fox, and Gilliam & Stoppard & McKeown laid the foundation for Brazil. With these 50 beat sheets, you'll see how “hitting the beats” creates stories that resonate the world over for these outstanding writers—and how you can follow in their footsteps.Salva Rubio is a novelist, screenwriter, and author. He has been nominated at the Spanish Goya Awards for Best Animation Feature. As a graphic novel writer, some of his works have been published in America, including Monet, Itinerant of Light (nominated for an Eisner Award), and The Photographer of Mauthausen. A writer and filmmaker based in Los Angeles, today's guest Duncan Birmingham was an executive producer and screenwriter for IFC's MARON and also served as a co-executive producer and writer on the Starz series BLUNT TALK as well. Additionally, Duncan's short films have premiered at such festivals as Sundance and AFI, and his screenplay SWINGLES, which was bought by Paramount, was also on The Black List. Recently, his lively, irreverent short-story collection THE CULT IN MY GARAGE was published by Maudlin House in 2021, & last year, he wrapped & released his excellent first feature-length film as a writer-director called WHO INVITED THEM. Having joined me in 2022 for one of my favorite conversations devoted to director Hal Ashby in the fifth episode of the third season, he's back for the fifth episode of the fourth to discuss writer-director Noah Baumbach's career over the decades & the films KICKING AND SCREAMING, THE SQUID & THE WHALE, GREENBERG, FRANCES HA, & MARRIAGE STORY. Note: If you hear me blank on things a bit more than usual in this episode, it's because I was battling an unrelenting sinus infection but was determined to power through & have an analytical conversation about outstanding talky indies with Duncan, who was coming off of the tail end of a bad cold himself! 'Tis the season! Nonetheless, it's a very rich discussion for fans of the filmmaker's work wherein we assessed recurring themes, compared the ways in which newer films & characters commented on past ones, & celebrated Baumbach's rich collaborators as well. With the help of regular collaborators Adam Driver and Greta Gerwig, Noah Baumbach leaves the big city - and reality - behind for his ambitious adaptation of Don DeLillo's WHITE NOISE. An absurdist meditation on death nested in a consumerist satire (or vice versa?) that riffs on Elvis, Hitler, car crashes, pharmaceuticals, marriage, and family life, Adam and Josh agree that Baumbach's big swing is a mostly successful one. Also on the show, a revisit of 2017's Top 5 Noah Baumbach Characters (originally paired with "The Meyerowitz Stories") and thoughts on the passing of five-time Oscar-nominated cinematographer Owen Roizman. 1:08 - Review: "White Noise" 34:58 - Polls / Notes / Owen Roizman 49:44 - Top 5 Noah Baumbach Characters (2017) 1:23:56 - Outro Times may fluctuate due to inserted ads. Join us this week as we school you on Hitler, school you on Elvis, survive an airborne toxic event and pelt our fingers at your front doors all while discussing the brand new comedic dramas ‘White Noise' and ‘The Banshees of Inisherin'. 00:00 - 26:07 - White Noise (2022) Discussion 26:07 - 45:56 - The Banshees of Inisherin Discussion White Noise is a 2022 absurdist comedy-drama film, written and directed by Noah Baumbach, adapted from the 1985 novel with the same title by Don DeLillo. It is Baumbach's first directed feature not to be based on an original story of his own. The film stars Adam Driver, Greta Gerwig, Don Cheadle, Raffey Cassidy, Sam Nivola, and May Nivola. Set in the 1980s, the story follows the life of an academic and his family when an air contamination accident occurs near where they reside. The Banshees of Inisherin is a 2022 dark tragicomedy film directed, written, and co-produced by Martin McDonagh. Set on a remote island off the west coast of Ireland, the film stars Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson as two lifelong friends who find themselves at an impasse when one abruptly ends their relationship, with alarming consequences for both of them; Kerry Condon and Barry Keoghan also star. It reunites Farrell and Gleeson, who previously worked together on McDonagh's directorial debut In Bruges (2008). We Watched A Thing is supported by Dendy Cinemas Canberra. For this week's second podcast review, I am joined by Dan Bayer & Brendan Hodges. Today we're reviewing the latest film from Academy Award-nominee Noah Baumbach ("Marriage Story") as he adapts someone else's material for the first time, Don DeLillo's "White Noise." Starring Adam Driver, Greta Gerwig, Don Cheadle, Raffey Cassidy, Jodie Turner-Smith, André L. Benjamin & Lars Eidinger, the film is a satire of America in the 1980s with a stylistic flourish from Noah Baumbach unlike any we've ever seen from him before. The film had its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival, where it received mixed to positive reviews for its performances, music, tone, and complex adaptation by Baumbach. The film is now streaming on Netflix and is garnering an even more mixed response but what did are think of it, though? Please tune in for our review as we discuss these aspects, including its Oscar prospects and more. Thank you so much for listening. We hope you enjoy it. Director Noah Baumbach discusses his new film, White Noise, with fellow director Todd Field in a Q&A at the DGA theater in Los Angeles. In the conversation, Baumbach speaks about working with his actors during the month of rehearsal, the benefits of working with frequent and new collaborators, and how offering direction that includes physicality can be helpful to actors. The film unveils the story of Jack Gladney, his wife Babette and their family, who must grapple with the universal mysteries of love, death, and happiness in an uncertain world after their lives are upended by a catastrophic train accident that spreads chemical waste over their town. Please note: spoilers are included. See photos and a summary of this event below: https://www.dga.org/Events/2023/January2023/WhiteNoise_QnA_1222.aspx
Greta Gerwig joins the show to talk about her role in Noah Baumbach's latest film, White Noise. Based on Don DeLillo's 1985 novel, the film dramatizes an American family's attempts to deal with the mundane conflicts of everyday life while grappling with the universal mysteries of love, death, and the possibility of happiness in an uncertain world.Gerwig shares her first encounter with the novel, describes how she unexpectedly volunteered herself to play Babette while Baumbach was working on the script, and provides a glimpse inside the film's choreography heavy rehearsals. Gerwig also reflects on meeting co-star Adam Driver back when she was a college student in New York City, reveals her goal of continuing to attend dance classes at 80 years old, and explains why getting to take her dog Wizard on a good, long walk is a major win.
Jon Mooallem met with the director Noah Baumbach to discuss his latest film, an adaptation of Don DeLillo's 1985 novel “White Noise.”The pair explore the recent chain of personal and public events in Baumbach's life, including the toll of the coronavirus pandemic and the death of his father, and how this “routine trauma” has affected his work, and why it prompted him to create a discombobulated, “elevated reality” for his film in the vein of David Lynch, the Coen brothers and Spike Lee.This story was written and narrated by Jon Mooallem. His new film, ‘White Noise,' however, is an exception. Based on Don DeLillo's 1985 novel of the same name, the movie follows an ordinary family dealing with ordinary problems along with what is called “an airborne toxic event,” a chemical spill of deadly gasses. KPCC's John Horn spoke with Baumbach about how he brought this previously “unadaptable” story to the screen.
Noah Baumbach directs this wistful coming-of-age comedy starring Greta Gerwig as the eponymous Frances who is a 27 year old aspiring dancer trying to find her place in the world after her best friend/roommate Sophie (Mickey Sumner) decides to move away with her fiancé to France. We follow her misadventures as Frances struggles to find steady work, a suitable home, and maybe even a bit of romance. This acclaimed indie from ten years ago also stars Adam Driver in one of his earliest roles and was co-written by both Baumbach and Gerwig - both of them would eventually not only get married but would also each receive Oscar nominations for Best Director just a few years later.Host: Geoff Gershon Editors: Geoff and Ella GershonProducer: Marlene Gershon
After earning an Oscar nomination for his screenplay for The Squid and the Whale, Noah Baumbach followed up that film's success by partnering with the recently Oscar-ed Nicole Kidman for Margot at the Wedding.
