In 2017, Canadian director Lindsay MacKay had a brain aneurysm that almost killed her. She joins us today to talk about that experience, the warning signs that can happen (but sometimes don't), and what the aftermath and recovery were like. We also discuss how Lindsay used the experience of her brain aneurysm to inform her direction of Kate Hewlett's The Swearing Jar and how Lindsay adjusted her work environment to better serve her brain. She has had two big events in her life since we last spoke, from becoming a mother to the critical success of "The Swearing Jar," the movie she adapted from her musical play. Kate Hewlett joins us to bring us up to speed on both, plus share more stories from the set of Stargate Atlantis, LIVE!
We look at the art of film and television casting today with acclaimed casting director, and gay man, Matthew Lessall. Matthew's latest accolade is an Achievement in Casting nomination for a Canadian "Oscar" bestowed by the Canadian Screen and Television Academy. The nomination recoginizes his work on The Swearing Jar, Described as "intelligent, hopeful and heartbreaking", Michael casted Patrick J. Adams, Adelaide Clemmons, Douglas Smith, and Kathleen Turner as its stars. A romantic musical, the film is about a music teacher who both loves her husband, and falls in love with another musician. A two-term former Casting Society of America (CSA) president, Matthew was born in London and raised in New York. After graduating from DePauw University, with a degree in Communications, Lessall moved to London to study acting at LAMDA, but ended up finding his niche in Casting. With his prophetic eye for great talent, Matthew cast Anna Kendrick in her first major film role, having done the same for many other now-celebrated actors. His resume includes casts for productions and co-productions for Australia, Canada, Dominican Republic, Germany, Greece, Italy, Mexico, Netherlands, and the UK. Most of his projects have earned Official Selection laurels – and numerous wins - at Cannes, TIFF, Venice, Sundance, San Sebastian, Tribeca, Outfest, SXSW, and a host of other significant festivals, oftentimes securing immediate distribution deals. Well, another week without Andy and Pete. It's like they just don't love us... BUT, without them here, we dont have to worry about those pesky restraining orders and we can invite Andrew's friend Jen on! They are old high school classmates so she fits right in! It's her first time on the show so we start gently. And by we, I mean Kevin. And by gently, I mean completely hogs the limelight. He starts off by discussing the Canadian film, The Swearing Jar. It's a romantic dramedy that isn't necessarily in his wheelhouse, but he won't shut up about it, so I guess he liked it? Next up, to continue to ease in the newbie (or to again monopolize the conversation like selfish windbag he is...) Kevin talks about The Bear on FX/Hulu. As it turns out, Jen has watched even more than he has, so she has a lot to bring to the conversation. Andrew then talks Velma which, as IMDB should suggest, no one else has really watched or enjoyed. He leaned into justifying the show, though, so there is a definite conversation there. Next up, Andrew and Jen talk about You People on Netflix and what they took away from it. It seems like it's a pretty solid film that they enjoyed overall. Sounds like Eddie and Jonah worked pretty well together and the rest of the cast seems to have done a solid job, too. Next up, much to Kevin's enjoyment, the gang again talks The Last of Us. This time it's the second episode of the song season and most people seem to be liking it. Spoiler alert: Kevin loved it! After that talk, the group gets tangential, as they are wont to do. You'll get some Avatar talk and some James Cameron ego stroking... As always, we hope you enjoyed this weeks episode. It was a lot fun to have a new person on again and we hope Jen had a great time. We asked her and she said she did, but Stockholm Syndrome is a thing, y'all. Don't forget to like and subscribe if you haven't already. Share the episode on Facebook or Twitter or wherever else you socialize your media. Have a great week and we'll see you soon!

It's time for The Swearing Jar.It is a rare and miraculous thing to find your one true soul mate. Carey (Adelaide Clemens) soon learns that finding two of them can pose an even greater problem.Part comedy, part drama, all honest. In advance of it dropping in theatres tomorrow we had the pleasure of sitting down with one of it's stars; Patrick J Adams to talk about the work, the love of the job and so very much more....The Swearing Jar is in theatres on Nov. 4th.
A movie so nice....we actually decided to talk about it twice....Once more into the breach we go as we sit down with the star of the very honest and heartful 'The Swearing jar' which is in theatres in Toronto (and likely across the country) tomorrow.During the hustle and bustle that is the Toronto International Film Festival we had the unique pleasure of sitting down with Adelaide to talk about how she got the movie, working with the likes of Kathleen Turner, finding the joy the work, singing on screen for the first time and so very much more....The Swearing Jar is in theatres tomorrow, November 4th.
Actor, writer and producer Kate Hewlett (Stargate Atlantis, Degrassi, Murdoch Mysteries and more), who's just adapted her 2008 stage musical The Swearing Jar into a feature film with director Lindsay Mackay, sinks into the beguiling mysteries of Sofia Coppola's 2003 Oscar-winner Lost in Translation, that delicate little drama where Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson forge an unexpected connection in a Tokyo hotel. Your genial host Norm Wilner has never been to Tokyo, by the way.
Actor Kathleen Turner discusses her latest role in The Swearing Jar and what the film's love story taught her about loneliness. Actor and comedian Jack McBrayer talks about bringing his aptitude for kindness to preschoolers everywhere with his Apple TV+ show Hello, Jack! The Kindness Show. Rad Simonpillai, Niko Stratis and Syrus Marcus Ware unpack the public backlash to Netflix's new true crime series on Jeffrey Dahmer, plus, the media's approach to covering the latest Kanye West controversy.
I interview Tim Williams, composer of the soundtrack for the movie Pearl. (Oct 11, 2022) Here's the press release from his publicist: (September 15, 2022 – Los Angeles, CA) – Today, A24 Music released the single “Pearl Main Titles” from the Pearl Original Motion Picture Soundtrack with music by Tyler Bates & Timothy Williams, listen here. The full 19-track album will be available September 23 on major digital platforms. With only six weeks to assemble a 68-person orchestra, Bates brought in frequent collaborator Timothy Williams, who worked with the composer on Guardians of the Galaxy, to help him audition musicians, build the orchestra, rehearse over four days in Nashville, and record the score. “In the style of mid-century melodramas,” says West, “Tyler Bates fashioned a sweeping, shrieking, strings-based score that lets the viewer know from the opening credits that Pearl will not be a subdued or quiet film. I said to him, ‘let's do a romantic, melodramatic, old-school score for this movie.'” He continues, “This wasn't the first time I've used live instruments on a movie—but it was the first time I had a full orchestra. It was awesome. Tyler and Tim really hit it out of the park. The score is very much one of the film's central characters, and that was important." “Ti expressed the musical approach to this film with us before filming,” says Bates & Williams. “We knew that the music would be based in an "Old Hollywood" approach, which stylistically is something we both love to do. This was a rare opportunity to write a lyrical score where the main theme permeates the music throughout the myriad emotional and psychological dynamics from beginning to end.” ABOUT TIM Timothy Williams is a multi-award-winning composer best known for his work on Pearl, Finding You, Brightburn, and Get Out! Williams' films includes A24's Pearl, co-scored with Tyler Bates, Gravitas' The Swearing Jar, Roadside Attractions' Finding You, Screen Gems' Brightburn, directed by David Yarovesky, We Summon The Darkness, directed by Marc Meyers, which won best score award at ScreamfestLA; Wild Horses, directed by Robert Duvall; I.T., directed by John Moore, and Red Sky, for which Tim Williams was nominated Best Composer by Motion Picture Sound Editors and best score at the Hollywood Music in Media Awards. Williams has written additional music for the Academy Award® and Golden Globe® winner Get Out!, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, Hobbs and Shaw, Deadpool 2, 300, Watchmen, Super, Sucker Punch, and The Spy Who Dumped Me. Television work includes co-scoring AMC/Shudder Creepshow with Tyler Bates, Disney Junior's Piney, the Fox pilot Richard Lovely, and additional music on Fox's The Exorcist (S2), ABC's Missing and Comedy Network's Sym-Bionic Titan. A graduate of the National Film and Television School, Williams has received two Motion Picture SE Golden Reel Award nominations (Red Sky), four Thea Award wins, 10 ASCAP Plus Awards and won best score at the 24FPS Festival (Butterfly Circus), best score at ScreamfestLA 2019 (We Summon The Darkness) and best soundtrack nomination at the HMMA Awards (Red Sky). Studio Soundtracks takes listeners behind the scenes of how music is crafted for film and television by hearing directly from composers, songwriters and music professionals in the Entertainment Industry. Listen to inspiring conversations about composition and hear works from Emmy, Grammy, and Oscar-winning film scores on the show. COLIN STETSON Colin Stetson was born and raised in Ann Arbor, spent a decade in San Francisco and Brooklyn honing his formidable talents as a horn player, eventually settling in Montreal in 2007. Over the years he has worked extensively, live and in studio, with a wide range of bands and musicians including Tom Waits, Arcade Fire, Bon Iver, TV On The Radio, Feist, Laurie Anderson, Lou Reed, Bill Laswell, Evan Parker, The Chemical Brothers, Animal Collective, Hamid Drake, LCD Soundsystem, The National, Angelique Kidjo, Fink, and David Gilmore. Meanwhile he has developed an utterly unique voice as a soloist, principally on saxophones and clarinets, his intense technical prowess matched by his exhilarating and emotionally gripping skills as a songwriter. Stetson's astounding physical engagement with his instruments (chiefly bass and alto saxophones) produces emotionally rich and polyphonic compositions that transcend expectations of what solo horn playing can sound like. Stemming from that approach and aesthetic, he has been contributing regularly to the world of film, TV, and game scoring over the past decade with such titles as Hereditary (2018), The First (2018), Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018), Color Out of Space (2019), Barkskins (2020), Mayday (2021), Among The Stars (2021), Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022), The Menu (2022), and Uzumaki (2023).
