Federalist Papers. President Trump enjoys saying he's a student of history, and you might say he's familiar with America's way-back documents. While on the campaign trail for the presidency, Mr. Trump often said he wanted to reduce the Federal Government, and in principle, this has been a long-debated argument regarding power over state rights. By any measurement, the 36 trillion Federal debt is an abuse of power and threatens every man, woman, and child. [School of Everything Else 2025] All the way back in 2017 I put together an absolutely EPIC musical journey through the first eight years of the MCU, from Iron Man all the way up to Doctor Strange. So much time has passed since then (cue many gifs of Matt Damon drinking from the wrong Grail) and Marvel has not followed my sound advice about allowing each hero (and maybe a villain or two) to retain a theme that reprises with every subsequent appearance. However, that does not mean there haven't been some truly excellent scores composed, which got side-lined in the clickbaity rush to pronounce Marvel as being formulaic, failing or indeed signifying the baleful death of film. Here for you now is a compendium of themes and sonic explorations as Phase 3 draws to its epic conclusion and Phases 4 and 5 wend their way from the small screen to the big and back again. I look forward to a third volume of these shows sometime in the early 2030s, when the Fantastic Four, the X-Men, Secret Wars and whatever happens with Spider-Man and whatever inevitable soft reboot brings us to a new era of superhero cinema. 1. Matty P Radio Presents: Marks v. Pros & Saturday Morning Cereal
The Saturday Morning Cereal Show: The show that celebrates the themes of Saturday morning TV that not only we grew up with but that grew up with us, reminds you to take some time this week to remember your original happy hour: Saturday mornings as a kid, waking up at dawn, jumping on the couch with a bowl of chocolate cereal, turning on the ‘toons, tuning out the outside world and working your way into a sugar hangover before noon. This week, it's No Badge Required as we “take it outside” of San Diego Comic Con with special guest, composer JoanneHigginbottom (SamuraiJack, Primal, CriminalMinds). It's July. It's San Diego. It's Comic-Con! And this is absolutely not a San Diego Comic-Con preview show! That's right, instead of talking about what may happen at Comic-Con 2024 we are going to talk about what does happen, outside of the San Diego Convention Center every year, with a spirited walk down memory lane to discuss our favorite outside installations and exhibits that we've seen over the years. To lead our "no badge required" conversation, we crack open the SDCC23 audio vault, to debut our 1-on-1 interview with composer Joanne Higginbottom recorded on the day of her rock star performance alongside fellow composer Tyler Bates and a live orchestra at the Genndy Tartakovsky Musical Experience. This concert was held at the Adult Swim Festival On The Green carnival installation outside of SDCC featuring the music from Adult Swim's shows Primal and Unicorn: Warriors Eternal. Join Dan “Grim” Shea, Marke., and Johnny Heck as they host our season 11 finale and rock out with their comic-con's out…side!

As Quill assembles an unlikely team of misfits, including a green-skinned assassin Gamora (Zoe Saldana), a walking tree named Groot (Vin Diesel), a trigger-happy raccoon named Rocket (Bradley Cooper), and the vengeance-seeking Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista), the stage is set for a cosmic escapade unlike any other.Gunn's screenplay infuses the narrative with witty banter, cultural references, and a surprising amount of emotional depth. He takes us through all the sub genres such as ska, rocksteady, dub, and dancehall. Plus he teaches us about the legends in Reggae drumming such as Lloyd Knibb and Carlton Barrett and the gear that these Jamaican drummers would use when playing with icons such as Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Lee Perry and many more. Here is some more info on Gil: Los Angeles native, Gil Sharone, is highly regarded as one of the most versatile session and touring drummers in the world, who is known for his creativity, authenticity and strong pocket. Feliz escucha.

Composer, producer and musician Tyler Bates on how he created the score for John Wick: Chapter 4, embracing the graphic novel-style aspect of the franchise, and how his daughter, Lola Collette, came to feature on the film's soundtrack.
Bassist, producer, and a man of many honky tonk talents
Composer Joel J Richard joins us for an in-depth look at his work co-scoring the entire John Wick series alongside Tyler Bates, and what went into developing the sound of John Wick and evolving it across four films. Joel starts off talking about his unique path to composing including working as an assistant for John Powell. We talk about how he found his inspiration for composing and what were the steps that led to meeting Tyler Bates, which in turn led Tyler asking him to co-helm the first John Wick film. We focus on the musical evolution of John Wick, and how he worked with director Chad Stahelski as the films grew in scope and the lore of the world expanded. Joel talks about finding the sound of the world, what style and approach worked best, and how the scores for each film led up to this final chapter. Chapter 4 opens up the scope of John Wick even bigger and builds upon its genre inspirations from Hong Kong cinema, John Woo, European neo-noir, Akira Kurosawa, and Sergio Leone. Joel talks about weaving those textures and nods, tackling huge action set pieces, and making sure the score never lost the feel that was established in the first film. Joel is such a wonderful and versatile composer, and his work on the John Wick series ended up building its own unique sonic identity while still being able to acknowledge the genres that inspired the character and world. A Film.Music.Media Production | Produced & Presented by Kaya Savas
Fresh off of scoring the critical and box office hit action film John Wick 4, Tyler Bates (Guardians of the Galaxy Vols. 1 & 2, 300, The Punisher) joins The Film Scorer Podcast! Unsurprisingly, Tyler and I spend a decent amount of time talking about his work on John Wick; not just the latest film, but his work across all four entries and his collaboration across each with Joel J. Richard as well. Throughout the chat, we also cover Tyler's latest series, the animated action/spy show Agent Elvis on Netflix (which he co-scored with Tim Williams), his interest in equitable collaboration, and how he continues to push himself to improve and break his own boundaries. One note: prior to the interview Tyler had spent the preceding few days playing shows with Jerry Cantrell and flying across the country, so he has a slight cold throughout. You can find out more about Tyler on his website. John Wick 4 is in theaters while Agent Elvis is on Netflix, and Tyler's scores, as well as many of his other works, are available digitally on all major platforms.

"You need to keep the fire. And you need to surround yourself with other people who have the fire." — Tyler Bates Our guest today is Tyler Bates, one of the world's top composers, guitarists, songwriters, and record producers. Tyler has scored some of the biggest film and television franchises, such as Guardians of the Galaxy and John Wick. In his spare time, he's playing to massive audiences in the world of rock music, and back to the studio again writing and producing records with artists like Bush, Marilyn Manson, and In This Moment. In 2004, he created the menacing audio backdrop for the popular Zack Snyder reboot of Dawn of the Dead, beginning a string of nearly a dozen number ones that have contributed to a whopping USD $6 billion at the worldwide box-office. Tyler teamed up with Snyder again for the films 300, Watchmen, and Suckerpunch. His body of work then expanded to include films like Atomic Blonde, The Devil's Rejects, and The Day the Earth Stood Still, as well TV shows like Californication, The Punisher, and The Purge. Most recently, Tyler scored the blockbuster Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw, Deadpool 2, and The Spy Who Dumped Me. _ Video version of this episode:
We wecome back to the show, Tyler Bates. We discussed all things World CUp and slightly walk the line of the huge political controveries that where in the Qatar World Cup. Who was impressive and who didn't impress? How the USA did and did they meet expectations? And we finish off with our Either/Or Game. Give it a listen and tell us what you think.
Scorpio season kicks off today and I am dropping this special episode with Scorpio Sun Chelsea Wolfe to honor the day. Chelsea Wolfe is a singer-songwriter from Northern California who has spent the last 13 years touring the world with her eponymous band, and releasing albums that range from the intimacy of acoustic folk all the way to sludge metal. Wolfe's music has been featured in film and TV episodes and trailers such as Game of Thrones and American Horror Story, and in 2021 she composed her first movie score in collaboration with Tyler Bates for the A24 film “X.” Her approach to recording can be experimental, yet her works are tied together in rich textures and the haunting melodies of her unique voice and writing style, inspired by the depths of the realm of sleep and dreams, and digging into the heaviness of this world to find its strange beauty. I interview Tim Williams, composer of the soundtrack for the movie Pearl. (Oct 11, 2022) Here's the press release from his publicist: (September 15, 2022 – Los Angeles, CA) – Today, A24 Music released the single “Pearl Main Titles” from the Pearl Original Motion Picture Soundtrack with music by Tyler Bates & Timothy Williams, listen here. The full 19-track album will be available September 23 on major digital platforms. With only six weeks to assemble a 68-person orchestra, Bates brought in frequent collaborator Timothy Williams, who worked with the composer on Guardians of the Galaxy, to help him audition musicians, build the orchestra, rehearse over four days in Nashville, and record the score. “In the style of mid-century melodramas,” says West, “Tyler Bates fashioned a sweeping, shrieking, strings-based score that lets the viewer know from the opening credits that Pearl will not be a subdued or quiet film. I said to him, ‘let's do a romantic, melodramatic, old-school score for this movie.'” He continues, “This wasn't the first time I've used live instruments on a movie—but it was the first time I had a full orchestra. It was awesome. Tyler and Tim really hit it out of the park. The score is very much one of the film's central characters, and that was important." “Ti expressed the musical approach to this film with us before filming,” says Bates & Williams. “We knew that the music would be based in an "Old Hollywood" approach, which stylistically is something we both love to do. This was a rare opportunity to write a lyrical score where the main theme permeates the music throughout the myriad emotional and psychological dynamics from beginning to end.” ABOUT TIM Timothy Williams is a multi-award-winning composer best known for his work on Pearl, Finding You, Brightburn, and Get Out! Williams' films includes A24's Pearl, co-scored with Tyler Bates, Gravitas' The Swearing Jar, Roadside Attractions' Finding You, Screen Gems' Brightburn, directed by David Yarovesky, We Summon The Darkness, directed by Marc Meyers, which won best score award at ScreamfestLA; Wild Horses, directed by Robert Duvall; I.T., directed by John Moore, and Red Sky, for which Tim Williams was nominated Best Composer by Motion Picture Sound Editors and best score at the Hollywood Music in Media Awards. Williams has written additional music for the Academy Award® and Golden Globe® winner Get Out!, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, Hobbs and Shaw, Deadpool 2, 300, Watchmen, Super, Sucker Punch, and The Spy Who Dumped Me. Television work includes co-scoring AMC/Shudder Creepshow with Tyler Bates, Disney Junior's Piney, the Fox pilot Richard Lovely, and additional music on Fox's The Exorcist (S2), ABC's Missing and Comedy Network's Sym-Bionic Titan. A graduate of the National Film and Television School, Williams has received two Motion Picture SE Golden Reel Award nominations (Red Sky), four Thea Award wins, 10 ASCAP Plus Awards and won best score at the 24FPS Festival (Butterfly Circus), best score at ScreamfestLA 2019 (We Summon The Darkness) and best soundtrack nomination at the HMMA Awards (Red Sky). Tim has had multiple soundtracks released by Milan Records, Lakeshore Records, Varèse Sarabande and MovieScore Media.
Music quite simply makes the worlds we build on screen go round....On this episode we are getting behind the scenes on one of the more insidiously creepy films of the entire calendar year. We re-enter the world of 'X' and finally meet 'Pearl'.Trapped on her family's isolated farm, Pearl (Mia Goth) must tend to her ailing father under the bitter and overbearing watch of her devout mother. Lusting for a glamorous life like she's seen in the movies, Pearl's ambitions, temptations, and repressions all collide. If you haven't already, get yourself to the theatre to see 'Pearl' ASAP as it is one of the more psychologically engaging films of the entire year. We had the unique pleasure of sitting down with the film composers Tyler Bates and Timothy Williams about getting the job, the nature of composing for film, and knowing what you need for the right moment....
Bush frontman Gavin Rossdale guides us through the making of the band's new album 'The Art Of Survival', produced by Tyler Bates and featuring the single 'More Than Machines' and opening track 'Heavy Is The Ocean'. He tells us about returning to live shows, currently on tour in the US alongside Alice In Chains and Breaking Benjamin. Also, we look back on the success of 'Machinehead' and why it has had such an enduring appeal, from cover versions to sports games. Plus, following the recent Woodstock '99 documentaries, he reflects on performing at the event on the Friday.
Studio Soundtracks takes listeners behind the scenes of how music is crafted for film and television by hearing directly from composers, songwriters and music professionals in the Entertainment Industry. Listen to inspiring conversations about composition and hear works from Emmy, Grammy, and Oscar-winning film scores on the show. COLIN STETSON Colin Stetson was born and raised in Ann Arbor, spent a decade in San Francisco and Brooklyn honing his formidable talents as a horn player, eventually settling in Montreal in 2007. Over the years he has worked extensively, live and in studio, with a wide range of bands and musicians including Tom Waits, Arcade Fire, Bon Iver, TV On The Radio, Feist, Laurie Anderson, Lou Reed, Bill Laswell, Evan Parker, The Chemical Brothers, Animal Collective, Hamid Drake, LCD Soundsystem, The National, Angelique Kidjo, Fink, and David Gilmore. Meanwhile he has developed an utterly unique voice as a soloist, principally on saxophones and clarinets, his intense technical prowess matched by his exhilarating and emotionally gripping skills as a songwriter. Stetson's astounding physical engagement with his instruments (chiefly bass and alto saxophones) produces emotionally rich and polyphonic compositions that transcend expectations of what solo horn playing can sound like. Stemming from that approach and aesthetic, he has been contributing regularly to the world of film, TV, and game scoring over the past decade with such titles as Hereditary (2018), The First (2018), Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018), Color Out of Space (2019), Barkskins (2020), Mayday (2021), Among The Stars (2021), Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022), The Menu (2022), and Uzumaki (2023). On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've gathered three guys for a very focused discussion about one of the year's most exciting horror movies: Ti West, Tyler Bates, and Tim Williams. Ti West is a director who's made his name with a string of what I guess you'd call indie-horror movies—though I'm not sure that does justice to the kind of auteurist vision he has. With films like The House of the Devil and The Innkeepers, he revealed a truly singular style. He tried his hand at a Western with the wild and wooly In A Valley of Violence in 2016, but returned to his horror roots this year with a pair of movies filmed back to back: X, which came out in March, and its prequel, Pearl, which is just hitting theaters now. For these two movies, which both star Mia Goth, West hooked up with indie powerhouse A24, which as you'll hear in this chat, made a big bet on these two films—and since this chat took place, have now committed to a third in the franchise. If you like creepy, stylish horror, definitely check them out. A big part of what makes both X and Pearl work is the music, and that's where the two other guys on this chat come in. Tyler Bates is a composer who's worked on music for an incredible array of films, from 300 to John Wick to Guardians of the Galaxy. But he knows horror, too, having worked on Rob Zombie's string of early flicks as well. Bates is also a music producer, having recently done the new Starcrawler album, and he was, briefly, a member of Marilyn Manson. For the more old-fashioned orchestral score for Pearl, he recruited his friend and neighbor Tim Williams, who's contributed to a ton of great film and TV scores over the past decade as well. This chat among these three gets wonderfully granular about the world of film sound. Pearl is a prequel that takes place in 1918, so West wanted Bates to come up with something very old-school. That meant real orchestrations and the kinds of instruments and musical cues you don't really hear anymore—and it works remarkably well. As you'll hear in this conversation, West really thinks like an auteur: He's concerned with every aspect of his movies, right down to whether the sound of crickets is going to interfere every so slightly with the score. All of that care definitely shows on screen, and you can hear when these guys talk how much they care about getting things just right. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Ti West, Tyler Bates, and Tim Williams for chatting. If you liked what you heard, please follow Talkhouse on your favorite podcasting platform, and check out all the great written pieces on this very site. This episode was produced by Myron Kaplan, and the Talkhouse theme is composed and performed by the Range. See you next time!
Timothy Williams is a composer that moved to LA in the early 2000s to pursue his craft as well as his love for music. Having worked on projects for Disney, it wasn't until Williams got his big break, along with friend and colleague Tyler Bates, on the film 300. Since then Williams has worked on projects such as "Get Out", Jordan Peele's debut masterpiece, "Deadpool 2", "The Swear Jar" and here mostly recently, the Ti West film "Pearl". It was great speaking with Williams about his love and passion for music, sailing, his family and what it takes to be an artist in this decade. Enjoy!

Sumner welcomes award-winning musician/composer/producer Tyler Bates to this week's Hard Agree for a chat about his working life in music & movies. Over the last twenty years, Tyler has scored some of the most impactful Hollywood productions of the 21st century – including Watchmen, 300, Guardians of the Galaxy 1 & 2, Hobbs & Shaw, Deadpool 2 and all three John Wick movies. He's composed music for a wide range of TV shows & video games, written & produced a bunch of top-selling rock albums and created this year's aural Batman project Dark Nights: Death Metal. As Sumner observes, Tyler's achieved all of that through sheer ability (wrapped in refreshing humility), an unparalleled work ethic and a positivist, talent-nurturing belief in the beauty of artistic collaboration. Tyler Bates is the real deal: a creator who believes in the beauty & diversity of art - and the talented humans who create that art, whatever form it may take.
