NEWNUMBERTWO (Sorted / Denver) Wallace Winfrey aka @newnumbertwo has been paying keen attention to tangents, mutations & edge cases in electronic music since his first exposure to industrial and ambient in 1988. After a few years as a trainspotter/collector and participant in the nascent net.rave scene (big ups hyperreal & mw-raves), he started DJing jungle in the midwest in 1994, and since 1997, has been a stalwart of the Colorado rave scene, working with crews such as Trust and Mother Earth Sound System before starting the Sorted parties with Veronica Lamaak in 2015. Sorted focuses on the intersection of bass, techno, jungle and UKG, eschewing easy or predictable pigeonholing but with a decided soft spot for the city of Bristol. This set was performed at Deep Club's 2018 Summer Freakout, and is reflective of the Sorted sound: a foundation of heady techno with frequent excursions into broken beats and bass. French techno music producer Julien Saillenfait a.k.a Deapmash began producing music 5 years ago at the age of 19. His prior releases on Bedouin, THEM, Soul Notes, Boysnoize Records and Leisure System have drawn inspiration from DJs and producers like Randomer, Clouds, Blawan and Tessela. Getting supports from the most respectful djs, Deapmash fastly built up his reputation in the industry. As an artist unafraid of collaboration, he's worked with Aquarian, Joefarr, Lag, Kastil, Madame, Raito and Benjamin Damage to great effect. Overmono is the UK sibling duo of Tessela and Truss, aka Ed and Tom Russell. As individuals, they have embodied everything that is exciting about the English underground for the last few years on labels like R&S, Perc and their own Poly Kicks. Now, combined as a live duo, they are making widescreen techno for XL Recordings that is informed by a ravey past and always comes on strong. In the club their shows are arresting affairs cooked up on an array of hardware tools. You can catch this show at Dekmantel Festival this year but for their podcast, they enter DJ mode and serve up eighty minutes of the sort of beats that colour their own sounds. Far from an all out techno assault, it is a well balanced trip through reflective metal breakbeats, deep pulsing kicks and experimental electronic ambiance that leaves you suspended in space one moment and tethered firmly to the dance floor the next. Unfolding with a spaced out and dreamlike feel, this is techno but not as we know it.
