Tread Perilously's month of failed prestige TV continues with the pilot episode of Manhattan: "You Always Hurt The Ones You Love." When Charlie accepts a blind offer to work at a government facility in New Mexico, he is shocked to discover he will be helping to design an atomic bomb. His wife, Abby, adjusts to the strange way of life out on the plains as no one can grow crops in the local soil and all the wives build a society of their own. Meanwhile, renegade scientist Frank Winter must prove his theory to Oppenheimer to save his group from being shut down. Erik and Justin end up having a spirited discussion about history, historical inaccuracies, and the Super Soldier Program. Erik gets distracted by star Rachel Brosnahan in 1940s outfits while Justin can't completely wash away co-star Ashely Zuckerman's resemblance to The Office's B.J. Novak. John Benjamin Hickey's strengths as Frank are also called into question. The filmography of episode director Thomas Schlamme leads into the weeds. A wild Katja Herbers appears. Harry Lloyd britians things up as well. Justin tries to offer an opinion based on watching the whole series and Walter White becomes strangely important.

Welcome to 'Don't You Want Me?' - a podcast series taking a lighthearted look at the most relatable, intriguing and dysfunctional relationships in film.  Today we're tucking into some haggis with 1993's cult comedy classic So I Married an Axe Murderer, directed by Thomas Schlamme. Mike Myers plays a commitment-phobic chap - a recurring theme on this podcast - who meets his match in the form of the beautiful Harriet, played by Nancy Travis, though some meaty issues arise once they start to get to know one another.  If you enjoy this episode, please leave us a rating or a review in your podcast app of choice - we would appreciate it more than the world's largest cappuccino. What is it about the pairing of Harriet and Charlie and all that comes with it that has led to this movie gathering so many devoted fans over the last thirty years? Well, who better to discuss this with than one of the writers of So I Married an Axe Murderer - it's comedian and communication expert Neil Mullarkey.  You can follow Neil on Twitter and Instagram. Back in '93, or Before Shrek, we call it, BS for short, we were treated to a soft entry into the spooky dark comedy basement with So I Married an Axe Murderer. This flick was directed by Thomas Schlamme and features Mike Myers as the star character, but includes some familiar faces in bit-roles throughout. As the title suggests, Myers finds himself in a relationship with a woman he begins to suspect may be a murderer, and then we watch the comedic outlay of that. Also, he's a beat poet, so, you know, poems… This flick did not make any money at all. However, it did secure a cult following afterwards. But does it hold up? Listen in as Jon, Colin, and Brent try to figure out if axe murderers have to use axes and if beat poets deserve beatings as we decide if this flick should get married or murdered.

Writer Maggie Serota joins to discuss the 1993 comedy 'So I Married An Axe Murderer', a movie that takes inspiration from classic screwball comedies, Hitchcock thrillers, and SNL-style sketch comedy in equal measure. We discuss the rise of the film's star, Mike Myers, a gifted comedic performer who dedicated much of his 90s output to an evolving pantheon characters, often involving elaborate makeup and outlandish vocal affectations. Then, we talk about the film's stunning bullpen of comedy veterans, including Alan Arkin, and the late Phil Hartman and Charles Grodin - all contributing hilarious riffs on their signature characters. Finally, we talk about Myers's career today by way of his most recent work, the dire Netflix series 'The Pentaverate' and why audiences might welcome a career pivot in the vein of other SNL alum Adam Sandler or Bill Hader.Follow Maggie on Twitter.Read & Subscribe to Maggie's Substack.
