Politicon: How The Heck Are We Gonna Get Along with Clay Aiken

Clay welcomes former Rep. David Jolly (https://davidjolly.com/) of Florida to discuss the unraveling of our political culture, the changes our Congress needs and whether The SAM Party (http://joinsam.org/) can move us forward.  Has the need for cold hard cash irreparably corrupted the two dominant parties in our country?  Can centrism be the solution, or must we first make the changes that take power away from those that divide us? Guest: Rep. David Jolly Former Congressman David Jolly served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2014 – 2017.  A student of the institution, Jolly has held virtually every position in Congress, from intern to Member, and has worked outside the Congress as an attorney and political consultant, as well as in specialty finance. Known for his fierce independent streak and bipartisan approach, Jolly was first elected in a special election in Florida, a Republican winning a Democratic leaning district.  It was his first run for elective office and became one of the most expensive Congressional races in U.S. history at the time.  It made Jolly a fierce campaign finance reform advocate and his resulting legislative effort to prohibit Members of Congress from directly soliciting campaign contributions was ultimately featured on CBS’ 60 Minutes. Today, Jolly can often be seen as a policy and politics analyst on MSNBC and CNN, including regular appearances on The 11th Hour with Brian Williams, Hardball with Chris Matthews, CNN Tonight with Don Lemon, The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell, Deadline White House with Nicolle Wallace, All In with Chris Hayes, and many others.   Jolly has also appeared on HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher, and regularly on PoliticKing with Larry King.  Jolly’s work has been published in Time, Roll Call, the Washington Post, CNN.com, NewsMax, the Washington Times, and the Tampa Bay Times.  Jolly also served as an Adjunct Professor at the University of South Florida and is currently authoring his first book. A Washington Post columnist wrote, “Jolly speaks the truth.”  The Tampa Bay Times, “It’s refreshing to hear someone take on the system.”  And upon leaving Congress, one columnist penned, “Farewell to the one Congressman willing to compromise.” Jolly received his Bachelor of Arts from Emory University in 1994, and his Juris Doctor Cum Laude from George Mason University in 2001.  The son of a minister, Jolly is a fifth-generation Floridian and resides today with his wife Laura in Belleair Bluffs, Florida. The GOP has no member that can compare compete or communicate like Joe Biden is. While pushing for racial equity he’s speaking to white America in saying that they will still have jobs and work, Either Joe listens to us or we are pretty smart. A lot of what we’ve talked about is being enacted, buy American, end oil subsidies, ignoring the past administration, and seeing climate change as an opportunity to create jobs and a market place we own. 3:40 - Game stop GameStop shares have soared 1,700 percent as millions of small investors, egged on by social media, employ a classic Wall Street tactic to put the squeeze 6:40 “Buy American” Executive Order :https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/statements-releases/2021/01/25/president-biden-to-sign-executive-order-strengthening-buy-american-provisions-ensuring-future-of-america-is-made-in-america-by-all-of-americas-workers/ Climate change executive order https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/statements-releases/2021/01/27/fact-sheet-president-biden-takes-executive-actions-to-tackle-the-climate-crisis-at-home-and-abroad-create-jobs-and-restore-scientific-integrity-across-federal-government/ 27:15 Biden stands up to Russia Russian bounties, Solar wind, new start, and Ukraine, Alexei Navalny. Help us expose our “Red Tie Tractor” of the week 46:15 Cracks in the Q the original theory was that President Trump is lying in wait to expose a secret cabal of Democrats engaged in a child sex-trafficking ring. Inauguration Day was supposed to mark the “storm,” or the day of reckoning when Trump would arrest all of his enemies and send them to Guantanamo Bay; “Just wait” didn’t work, the storm was unsuccessful and Biden took the oath Radicals are mining for members in the despondent Q audience. Dividing the supporters into activated and disillusioned But wait, theres more… Q’s are propagating the idea that an obscure 1871 act made the United States a corporation and not a federal government, thus rendering any laws passed after that year moot and U.S. citizens not subject to them. According to this theory, the United States will revert back to its original form on March 4th, the date when presidents were inaugurated prior to the 1933 passage of the 20th amendment. They believe Trump will be sworn in as the 19th president of the United States. The 18th president, Ulysses S. Grant, served between 1869 and 1877, or the time period when those who cling to this theory believe the United States “became” a “corporation.” 50:00 Marjorie Greene (GA) Twitter @mtgreenee @RepMTG 56:00 Wrap up - Final statements Alternate existence - vs - based in a reality Not really supporting the supporters. Kurt Andersen and Lawrence O’Donnell first met 46 years ago as undergraduates at Harvard, forming a friendship that’s flourished alongside their careers as two of their generation’s most incisive, insightful observers of American politics and culture. Andersen made his mark in the 1980s as co-founder of the iconic Spy magazine, then went on to serve as editor-in-chief of New York magazine, host of the Peabody Award-winning radio program “Studio 360,” and best-selling novelist and non-fiction author. O’Donnell cut his teeth in Washington as staff director of the powerful Senate Finance Committee and protege to legendary New York Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan, then transitioned to the TV business — first as an Emmy Award-winning writer on “The West Wing” and currently as host of “The Last Word” on MSNBC. On this week’s Hell & High Water, Heilemann, a friend of both Andersen and O’Donnell, brings the two men together for their first-ever joint interview. They discuss the performances of Joe Biden and Amanda Gorman on inauguration day, O’Donnell’s insider’s perspective on the January 6 assault on the US Capitol, and Andersen’s “grand unified theory” of modern American life, as sketched out in his recent companion volumes, “Fantasyland” and “Evil Geniuses.” Learn more about your ad-choices at https://www.iheartpodcastnetwork.com
