Just as Danny Winn's whirlwind acting career was starting to explode in 2015, he met veteran director Rich Sickler on the set of WGN America's “Manhattan” series, in which he appeared in five episodes, four as “Scientist Brock,” one as a state trooper. Sickler offered some sage advice about the prospects of success daring to enter the film industry at a more mature age than many of his peers: “So many are striving to get in at a young age, but as they mature, they start dropping out and pursuing other paths. So as a mature actor, there's less competition aside from the small percentage of those young actors who made it.” https://selfdiscoverymedia.com/?p=93623
If you’re a performer who has recorded a self-taped audition over 300 times, Aldis Hodge is your craft and career guru. An actor and entrepreneur since childhood, Aldis has risen through the ranks of Hollywood and made thoughtful, intentional choices on- and off-screen (including resisting Black stereotypes). “Put that hustle in,” he advises fellow artists. “I find the true professionals to be more dedicated and more motivated now than they were when they started. Because they realize how much hard work it takes to get there.” Aldis moved around often as a kid, with military parents who were supportive of his artistic mission. After booking bit parts and studying at the Art Center College of Design, he earned his big break on TNT’s “Leverage,” going on to star in “Straight Outta Compton,” the SAG Award–winning “Hidden Figures,” WGN America’s “Underground,” “Black Mirror,” “Clemency,” “What Men Want,” “The Invisible Man,” and now, Showtime’s “City on a Hill.” Catch him next starring as athlete-actor Jim Brown in Amazon Studios’ film “One Night in Miami” from director Regina King. Today, we'll be discussing the heart-pounding antebellum period drama, Underground! This short-lived series about the endeavors of desperate slaves to make a bid for their freedom kept audiences enraptured and turned many new audiences on to its home network, WGN America. While slave narratives aren't uncommon, Underground took bold risks with its portrayal of slaves, slave owners, plantation life, slave catchers, and the abolitionist movement. So what do we think made this series so unique? What helped set Underground apart from its contemporaries? Stay tuned!

This week Elvis sits down with Misha Green, showrunner for HBO’s “Lovecraft Country.” Green is also the creator of the series “Underground,” which was broadcast on WGN America. Green talks about how she and Jordan Peele, who’s an executive producer of “Lovecraft Country,” bonded over their love of horror films. She says that in adapting the novel “Lovecraft Country” for the screen, she didn’t want to feel restricted by the book, saying, “it's a beautiful platform, but I want to jump off of it.” And Green talks about why she pitched “Underground” as a heist caper.
To say Aldis Hodge's career is heating up right now is a massive understatement. This moment, for him, can be more aptly described as "being in hyperspace". He is currently shooting season two of Showtime's City on a Hill, where he goes toe to toe with Kevin Bacon. He recently wrapped a season of his rebooted TNT series, Leverage. And he is preparing to enter the DC Universe, opposite Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, playing Hawkman in the highly anticipated comic-inspired Black Adam. He was on short lists for an Oscar nomination for his work in the death row indie film, Clemency, and his upcoming festival favorite, One Night in Miami is already on early Oscar watch lists for next year. Other notable roles include MC Ren in Straight Outta Compton, Levi Jackson in Hidden Figures and Noah on the WGN America series Underground. On top of all of that, Hodge's passion for horology led him to bet on himself as an entrepreneur, creating a watch company that aims to stand out from the crowd. But Hodge was not born on Easy Street. His victories have been hard fought and his struggles have been real, including a stint where he and his brother lived with their mother, out of a car. He does not mince words and he brought the same fierce truth, and humor, to our conversation that he brings to his work as an actor. It is not the critic who counts. If you’ve been knocked down... get back up, dust yourself off, and get back in the game. If you want to give back, share this with someone who could use it. Encourage them to take the next step and leave a 5-star review so more people can benefit from these conversations. Actor Ed Heavey from WGN America's series Outsiders joins us in studio and we get as much out of him as we can about life on Shay Mountain - but that clan is secretive! After we give him a geek quiz (!), we cover how he ended up on our show, then working on Boardwalk Empire, Daredevil seasons 1 & 2, The Dark Knight Rises, and he breaks down some of the realities of acting and stunt work. And of course we talk quite about Outsiders and how things work on the mountain, the family dynamic, filming in in the woods, and much more, but the man will simply not tell us any Farrell secrets! Plus we talk the good old days of wrestling, World Of Warcraft, comic books and much more! Then hang around afterwards as Bill and the boys go into the email bin and get into things like Table Flippers, Roaming Turkeys, why no Beatles bio pic, and answer all kinds of other wacky questions. (Outsiders opening theme music "Taker's Creed" performed by Morgan O'kane and is copyright it's respective owners.)
