In our new series we invite a different guest for each episode to choose a 1974 movie to talk about, ranging from giant blockbusters to minor cult curios and everything else in between. Host Martin Kessler hops on The Nickel Ride, one of the more unjustly neglected films of that hallowed cinema year that sees director Robert Mulligan instill a distinctively L.A. setting with a shadow of noir desperation and a tinge of French crime drama melancholy. Martin is joined by two ardent cinéastes, podcaster Felicia Maroni and film writer Andrew Nette, to discuss how Mulligan creates a precis of mid-70's American movie constructs - fading machismo, pervasive paranoia, volitional isolation - that thrills even when there's more talking than shooting. fWotD Episode 2715: To Kill a Mockingbird Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Thursday, 10 October 2024 is To Kill a Mockingbird. To Kill a Mockingbird is a novel by the American author Harper Lee. It was published in July 1960 and became instantly successful. In the United States, it is widely read in high schools and middle schools. To Kill a Mockingbird has become a classic of modern American literature; a year after its release, it won the Pulitzer Prize. The plot and characters are loosely based on Lee's observations of her family, her neighbors and an event that occurred near her hometown of Monroeville, Alabama, in 1936, when she was ten.Despite dealing with the serious issues of rape and racial inequality, the novel is renowned for its warmth and humor. Atticus Finch, the narrator's father, has served as a moral hero for many readers and as a model of integrity for lawyers. The historian Joseph Crespino explains, "In the twentieth century, To Kill a Mockingbird is probably the most widely read book dealing with race in America, and its main character, Atticus Finch, the most enduring fictional image of racial heroism." As a Southern Gothic novel and Bildungsroman, the primary themes of To Kill a Mockingbird involve racial injustice and the destruction of innocence. Scholars have noted that Lee also addresses issues of class, courage, compassion, and gender roles in the Deep South. Lessons from the book emphasize tolerance and decry prejudice. Despite its themes, To Kill a Mockingbird has been subject to campaigns for removal from public classrooms, often challenged for its use of racial epithets. In 2006, British librarians ranked the book ahead of the Bible as one "every adult should read before they die".Reaction to the novel varied widely upon publication. Despite the number of copies sold and its widespread use in education, literary analysis of it is sparse. Author Mary McDonough Murphy, who collected individual impressions of To Kill a Mockingbird by several authors and public figures, calls the book "an astonishing phenomenon". It was adapted into an Academy Award-winning film in 1962 by director Robert Mulligan, with a screenplay by Horton Foote. Since 1990, a play based on the novel has been performed annually in Harper Lee's hometown. To Kill a Mockingbird was Lee's only published book until Go Set a Watchman, an earlier draft of To Kill a Mockingbird, was published on July 14, 2015. Lee continued to respond to her work's impact until her death in February 2016, although she had refused any personal publicity for herself or the novel since 1964.This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:23 UTC on Thursday, 10 October 2024.For the full current version of the article, see To Kill a Mockingbird on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm standard Joey.

The story follows Atticus Finch, played by Gregory Peck in an Oscar-winning performance, as he defends Tom Robinson (Brock Peters), a Black man falsely accused of raping a white woman in 1930s Alabama. The film is seen through the eyes of Atticus's young daughter, Scout (Mary Badham), and her brother Jem (Phillip Alford), who grapple with the harsh realities of racism and injustice in their small town. Key characters include Dill Harris (John Megna), Scout and Jem's imaginative friend, and Boo Radley (Robert Duvall), the mysterious neighbor who ultimately reveals his true character. Book: To Kill A Mockingbird    By Harper Lee   Film:   To Kill A Mockingbird (1962)   To Kill a Mockingbird is a novel by the American author Harper Lee. It was published in 1960 and was instantly successful. In the United States, it is widely read in high schools and middle schools. To Kill a Mockingbird has become a classic of modern American literature, winning the Pulitzer Prize. The plot and characters are loosely based on Lee's observations of her family, her neighbors and an event that occurred near her hometown of Monroeville, Alabama, in 1936, when she was ten.  Although the novel deals with rape and racial inequality, the book is told with warmth and humour.   The 1962 American drama film directed by Robert Mulligan. The screenplay by Horton Foote is based on Harper Lee's 1960 Pulitzer Prize–winning novel of the same name. The film stars Gregory Peck as Atticus Finch and Mary Badham as Scout. It marked the film debut of Robert Duvall, William Windom and Alice Ghostley.  It gained overwhelmingly positive reception from both the critics and the public; a box-office success, it earned more than six times its budget. The film won three Academy Awards, including Best Actor for Peck, and was nominated for eight, including Best Picture.  In 1995, the film was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the National Film Registry as "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".   Opening Credits; Introduction (2.33); Background History (17.50); Plot Synopsis (20.57); Book Thoughts(24.52); Let's Rate (1:33.07); Amazing Design Advertisement (1:31.42); Introducing a Film (1:37.53); Film Trailer (1:39.16); Lights, Camera, Action (1:41.55); How Many Stars (1:32.44); End Credits (2:41.44); Closing Credits (2:43.49)   Opening Credits– Epidemic Sound – copyright 2021. Our Valentine's Day 2023 episode is all about loves from the past who have inconveniently returned. In My Favorite Wife (1940), Irene Dunne is newly remarried Cary Grant's presumed dead wife, while in Kiss Me Goodbye (1982), James Caan is Sally Field's actually dead, or undead, husband, interfering with her engagement to the (ostensibly) less charismatic Jeff Bridges. We apply Stanley Cavell's concept of the "comedy of remarriage" to these movies and conclude that the comedy of My Favorite Wife really has nothing to do with its premise, whereas Kiss Me Goodbye does perform some interesting twists on comedy of remarriage tropes. In Fear and Moviegoing in Toronto, two more movies about love pick up these themes: Stanley Kwan's Rouge (1987) and Dorothy Arzner's Merrily We Go to Hell (1932). Happy Haunted Valentine's Day! Cherokee County man charged with assaulting and detaining disabled grandmother

A Cherokee County man has been indicted after prosecutors say he abused his disabled grandmother and did not allow her to leave their home. Nathan Bellino of Canton is charged with four counts of exploitation and intimidation of a disabled adult, one count of aggravated assault — family violence, one count of battery — family violence and one count of false imprisonment, according to the indictment filed January 10. The indictment charges Bellino with strangling his grandmother, hitting and pinching her, and depriving her of medical services, and blocking the exit and refusing to allow her to leave the home they shared in east Cherokee County near Canton. Prosecutors in the indictment say he caused "mental anguish" with his acts of violence, threats of violence and by limiting her contact with other people. The alleged incidents took place in October, according to the indictment. In an arrest warrant filed October 24 by the Cherokee Sheriff's Office, officers say Bellino took his grandmother's cell phone and prevented her from leaving the home for about four days. A Towne Lake collectibles store had “well over 1,000” cards stolen from its collection last week, the store's owner said, but the incident isn't slowing them down. BT Collectibles was broken into during the early morning of January 8. Co-owner Robert Mulligan said there was glass on the floor when he arrived that day. As of Monday, no one had been arrested in connection to this case, said Patty Pan, community affairs liaison for the Cherokee Sheriff's Office. Mulligan said that, after the perpetrator or perpetrators broke into the store, they went to the sealed display cases, smashing them and taking the cards.  Mulligan said there was another robbery in Roswell two days later involving another card shop. Robert Mulligan, alongside his wife, Beatrice Mulligan, opened BT Collectibles about a year-and-a half ago. The store has become popular in the Towne Lake community, and Mulligan said the support from both this community and Cherokee County as a whole has been “overwhelming.” The store fully opened again the following Tuesday, with support pouring in from customers and from social media users. For updates on the store, please visit the BT Collectibles Facebook page. BT Collectibles has a number of sports trading cards, Pokémon cards, memorabilia, comic books, collectibles, figurines, Funko POP figurines and more. In addition to buying cards from the store, customers can also bring in cards to sell. A longtime MUST Ministries employee and volunteer for many community organizations has been named the First Citizen of Cherokee County by the local Chamber of Commerce. As MUST's community liaison for Cherokee County, Kendall Jones is credited with helping hundreds of people with food, shelter and other needs. Jones was surprised with the honor by the Cherokee Chamber Thursday at its annual meeting, and was soon surrounded by family members on stage as he walked up to accept the award. Jones also sang a hymn to the audience, “Make Me a Servant,” which he said he sings to himself most days when he drives to work. Before Jones joined MUST's staff, he was a volunteer at their food pantry. In 2010, he became MUST's volunteer coordinator and intake manager. He was promoted to program director at MUST Cherokee, Cherokee Chamber Pam Carnes said, and in 2019 the nonprofit created his role specifically for him. Jones chairs the Canton Housing Authority, which owns and operates public housing in the city with federal funding, and serves as a board member of Cherokee FOCUS, a collaborative that supports children and families in the community. He also volunteers for the The Homeless Coalition of Cherokee County and for the chamber. In addition to serving Cherokee County through various local organizations, Jones has extended his service abroad as the missions chair at Canton First United Methodist Church. A crew of Cherokee County firefighters is raising money for one of their own after he lost his home to a fire Monday. Firefighter Joel Saunders and his wife, Carolyn, are staying with a friend after their home burned to the ground, according to a GoFundMe page set up by Saunders' crew members. The couple was not home at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported. They lost everything except for their vehicles, according to the page and Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services. According to Cherokee Fire spokesperson Lieutenant Michael Sims, the couple had lived in Blue Ridge. A link to the Go Fund Me can be found at Tribune Ledger dot com. House of Hope, a Cherokee County-based food bank, is celebrating 10 years in operation supporting their community. The nonprofit organization, with a home base located east of Canton on Cumming Highway, provides aid for between 105 to 130 families coming from as far as Dahlonega and Jasper every week. Its programs include food box pickups, a clothing closet and supplying families with smoke detectors and car seats. Director Wendy Graham shared that when beginning the expansions of the original pantry, she was told that most organizations fizzle out by three years. Ten years later, Graham and operations manager Christy Hofrichter are aiming their sights even higher. The nonprofit took its first steps on December 22, 2012 as a means of providing one hot meal to families connected with Free Home Elementary. Graham went one step further to provide Christmas Eve meals that month. The pantry's generosity grew to meet the needs of their community. Soon they were offering a soup kitchen in January, toiletry bags and care packages of nonperishable food items. When summer came, the organization opened its doors every Wednesday to continue to provide foodstuffs. Plans for the pantry's future include a separate room for the clothing closet and a larger truck for necessary item transportation. Graham said she also wants to help support other budding food banks in the area. Those interested in volunteering are encouraged to visit the food pantry at 11954 Cumming Highway on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Otherwise, the organization accepts monetary, food and clothing donations year-round. Writer-director, Charlie Peters, was raised in New York City before spending his high school years at Stonyhurst College in Lancashire, England, where he was classmates with the director Charles Sturridge and actor Edward Duke.  Charlie then studied theater at the University of Connecticut and subsequently received a Schubert Fellowship to do graduate work in playwriting at Carnegie Mellon University here in Pittsburgh.  While at CMU, his plays were acted by fellow students including Holly Hunter and Cherry Jones.  After graduating, he returned to New York to work as a playwright. His plays have been produced at La Mama Experimental Theatre Club, Primary Stages, Playwrights Horizons, The Actors Theater of Louisville and The Edinburgh Festival.  In 1978, Charlie was brought to Los Angeles by Columbia Pictures as part of a program looking for new writers, a program that turned out to be little more than a publicity stunt to distract from the bad PR Columbia had received as a result of its head, David Begelman, embezzling money from various actors.  Charlie's first produced movie, Paternity, is based on a play he'd written while at CMU. It starred Burt Reynolds and was directed by David Steinberg.  He's had a dozen other movies pr oduced including Blame It On Rio directed by Stanley Donen, Kiss Me Goodbye directed by Robert Mulligan, and Her Alibi, directed by Bruce Beresford. He's also directed two of his own: Passed Away with Bob Hoskins, Maureen Stapleton and Frances McDormand and Music From Another Room with Jude Law and Brenda Blethyn. Charlie has doctored over forty other produced movies and many more unproduced ones.  Renee Zellweger won The Golden Bear Award at The Berlin Film Festival for the 2010 movie, My One and Only, that Charlie wrote. Hs most recent film was 5 Flights Up based on the novel by Jill Ciment, which starred no less than Morgan Freeman and Diane Keaton.

Ian and Pat look at a very different kind of war movie, Robert Mulligan's 1971 coming-of-age drama, Summer of ‘42!The film centers on three WWII-era teen boys whose lazy summer is spent roughhousing, pursuing girls, and generally blocking out the world outside their idyllic beach-front community. When Hermie (Gary Grimes) falls in love with an older woman named Dorothy (Jennifer O'Neill), his ideas about the opposite sex are challenged in ways the characters and the audience may find surprising. In this wide-ranging review, the guys explore how Summer of ‘42 compares and contrasts from the teen sex comedies that would flood cinemas a decade later; why the film makes them feel at once cozy and uncomfortable; and its unlikely modern-day successor.Show Links:Watch the Summer of ‘42 trailer.Keep up with Pat at HollywoodChicago.com.Watch Pat's interview with Godspell star Robin Lamont (referenced in the episode):Part 1Part 2Subscribe to, like, and comment on the Kicking the Seat YouTube channel!

Bustle

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 1, 2020 5:44

Creepy twins are everywhere in pop culture. They’re performing in American Horror Story’s Freak Show. They’re navigating a vaguely incestual relationship on Riverdale. They’re in so many Lifetime thrillers, they’re basically their own subgenre. Seeing twins in horror movies is like going into the basement or investigating a suspicious noise: it’s one of those universal rules that almost always signals something sinister. Nothing encapsulates this better than The Shining, a two-and-a-half-hour psychological endurance test that includes all the hallmarks of a good horror movie: a haunted hotel, a disturbed young boy, one man’s gradual descent into ax-wielding insanity. And yet it’s the Grady twins — on screen for less than two minutes in total — who have most deeply imprinted upon the cultural psyche. They’ve been eternally analyzed, parodied ad infinitum, trotted out each year as Halloween costumes. A Google search for them returns over 12 million results, while one for Jack Torrance, the film’s lead character, yields a little under 8 million. This is in part because a mythos has surrounded twins since essentially the dawn of time. Often assumed to share an insular closeness and an eerie similarity in both appearance and manner, they've served as a longstanding subject of fascination both in literature and society. In the late 19th century, a confluence of events cemented twins as what Karen Dillon, the author of The Spectacle of Twins in American Literature and Popular Culture, refers to as a “double freak.” It was then that P.T. Barnum began parading twins as circus freaks and Francis Galton began experimenting on them amid the early eugenics movement. They became both a public spectacle and a scientific aberration — meant to be gawked at and prodded. Horror filmmakers began representing this onscreen in the 1930s, starting with Tod Browning’s Freaks and Roy William Neill’s The Black Room. When the genre boomed in the ‘70s, so too did horror stories about twins, including Alan Gibson’s Goodbye Gemini, Robert Mulligan’s The Other, and Brian de Palma’s cult slasher Sisters, all movies in which twins are preternaturally disposed to mayhem and murder. By the time The Shining premiered in 1980, twins had become so synonymous with fear and freakishness that the Grady sisters were instinctually terrifying. Ultimately, it didn’t matter that they weren’t technically twins or may in fact be the same person: they were scary either way. It’s not just about shock value, though. Horror is most effective when it feeds into our own subliminal fears and anxieties, and twins are a psychic horror as much as they are a visual abhorrence. Identical twins are often used as moral allegories for our internal struggle between good and evil, or else portray an elevated codependence and uncanniness that subconsciously disturbs our notion of individuality. “We tend to feel confident that we are individuals with clear borders,” says Juliana de Nooy, author of Twins in Contemporary Literature and Culture. “[So] to be confronted with an image of people where there’s maybe one person in two bodies or two people in one body, it ... immediately tells us, ‘Gasp, there might be two of us. There might be some scary other me that I can’t control.’” This calls back to the notion of the shadow self or “id” championed by Carl Jung and Sigmund Freud: the idea that there is some unconscious, uncontrollable other self driving our thoughts, behaviors, and desires. Twins literalize the division between these two selves, forcing us to stare down the parts of ourselves we’d otherwise prefer not to acknowledge. Unlike its predecessors, The Shining is not explicitly about twins, and at surface level doesn’t delve into these themes deeply. That’s what made it so impactful. “[It has] to be one of the first uses of twins as nothing but an image of horror,” Dillon says. But it is a film about duality. Isolated in an expansive, empty hotel and driven further and further into the dark corners of his mind, Jack (Jack Nicholson) devolves into his most primal, violent self — or perhaps, as the final scene hints, a past self. His son Danny (Danny Lloyd), meanwhile, spends his stay at the Overlook wrestling his alter ego “Tony” before being overtaken by him entirely. “Danny’s not here, Mrs. Torrance,” he tells his mother late in the movie. “Danny can’t wake up.” The Grady twins amplify and actualize what both characters are experiencing. Though they’re initially only hinted at, the girls’ presence is felt throughout the film via highly symmetrical scenes, recurring mirror shots, and a continued color scheme that mimics the image of their pale blue dresses against the red of their own blood. As Danny peddles dizzily around the hotel’s maze of hallways, the camera dips to his level, forcing us to see things through his eyes and from a more vulnerable position. By the time he encounters the twins dead-eyed, talking in unison, and beckoning him to “come play,” the movie’s psychological paranoia is at its peak. “At that point, it’s the full horror of, what am I looking at? Is this a hallucination of some sort?” Manchester Metropolitan University horror film scholar Xavier Aldana Reyes says, likening it to the feeling of having double vision. “I think it plays into the film’s focus on, is it really there? Is it not there? Are we going mad?” All of this helped to sear the Grady sisters into collective memory. Forty years later, they remain the quintessential image of creepy twins — as much a symbol of terror as our enduring obsession.
