It's the first episode of 2024 and PRAISING KANE is packed with wild Carol Kane content, starting with the hour long episode of Shelley Duvall's TALL TALES & LEGENDS adapting the famous poem "Casey at the Bat".. sort of! With Elliott Gould, Howard Cosell, Bob Uecker, Bill Macy and CAROL KANE! It's plenty odd. Then we look at an episode of the 80s comedy crime series CRAZY LIKE A FOX /w Jack Warden and John Rubinstein, featuring Carol Kane guesting as a beleaguered secretary. Then it's time for the main event, the Penny Marshall directed comedy-thriller JUMPIN JACK FLASH starring Whoopi Goldberg and a slew of famous faces in supporting roles- including Carol Kane! It's a Liam O'Donnell childhood favorite, but does it hold up? Let's find out! The post Episode 255 – Praising Kane – Jumpin Jack Flash (1986) first appeared on Cinema Smorgasbord.

Mr. Page was Whoopi Goldberg's "Fuckey Boss" in the movie - Jumpin Jack Flash (1986, must watch). Haven't we all had enough of the Mr. Page's and the Dale's of the World? Companies AND Leaders have #workfished us, for years! What is getting "Workfished"... let me explain... /wərkfiSHəd/ to lure employees into a business relationship by means of a fictional online or even, in person, persona. "They said they had a DEI strategy and promoted wellness, but when I was hired I realized, it was all just PR! I got workfished!" We'll hear stories of workfishing AND we'll help business and leaders know how to actively NOT be a workfisher. Jumpin Jack Flash! It's a new episode of Wiggly World! With guest Drew Haglin. In this episode we discuss what to do if you find bugs in your ear. We also explore the fascinating life of oysters, how the universe works, and David Hasselhoff. "The one thing that still keeps me up at night is Wiggly World" - Stephen King (Technically could have said this)
I'm a little black woman, in a big silver box! We watched Jumpin' Jack Flash (1986) with our friend Ben Cheaves and we still can't understand a thing Mick Jagger is singing. Whoopi Goldberg as Terry Doolittle is iconic. Her apartment, her workspace and her wardrobe are all #GOALS. Suffice it to say - we still want to be Terry when we grow up. She hates her boss, she's quick with a comeback and she can hold her own against KGB goons - she's just like us! Now we just need to perfect our Diana Ross lip sync for our lives. The Cold War era espionage and pre-AIM instant messaging may date the movie but we don't care! After all the cloak and dagger shenanigans is Jonathan Pryce a bit of a boobie prize? Was young Jon Lovitz sort of a cutie? Did Terry get a reward for extraditing a government agent? Find out in this weeks episode of Movies That Made Us Gay! Important Events May 24, 1830 On this day, Mary Had A Little Lamb by Sarah Josepha Hale is published by the Boston firm Marsh, Capen & Lyon. Born in New Hampshire in 1788, Sarah was homeschooled, and she attributed all of her learning and success to her mother. She wrote, ”I owe my early predilection for literary pursuits to the teaching and example of my mother. She had enjoyed uncommon advantages of education for a female of her times – possessed a mind clear as rock-water, and a most happy talent of communicating knowledge.” In 1848, Sarah married David Hale. He encouraged Sarah’s intellectual endeavors, and together, they enjoyed reading and study. Their idyllic life together was cut short when David died of a stroke after nine short years of marriage. Sarah gave birth to their fifth child two weeks after David died. Sarah began writing to support herself and her five children, all under the age of seven. In 1835, Sarah wrote Spring flowers, or the Poetical Bouquet: Easy, Pleasing and Moral Rhymes and Pieces of Poetry for Children. In the book, Sarah wrote of Mary and her little pet bird, Dicky. “In that gilded cage, hung with Chickweed and May, Like a beautiful palace and garden so gay. Perhaps you're not happy, perhaps you're not well: I wish you could speak, that your griefs you might tell; It vexes me quite thus to see you in sorrow; Good bye; and I hope you'll be better tomorrow." In 1856, Sarah wrote another book that focused on flowers, and it was called Flora’s Interpreter or “The American Book of Flowers and Sentiments." This gift book featured poetry and flowers to raise American national sentiment. She opened the book with this epigraph: “A flower I love! Not for itself, but that its name is linked With names I love. – A talisman of hope and memory.” By this point in her career, Sarah had established herself as a writer and editor and the Godmother of Thanksgiving. For twenty years, between 1847 and 1867, Sarah fought to make Thanksgiving a National Holiday, and she wanted a certain day for the celebration, writing, “The last Thursday in November has these advantages -- harvests of all kinds are gathered in -- summer travelers have returned to their homes -- the diseases that, during summer and early autumn, often afflict some portions of our country, have ceased, and all are prepared to enjoy a day of Thanksgiving.” But Sarah’s fight would not end until 62 years after her death when Franklin Delano Roosevelt made Thanksgiving Day official in 1941. In the year before her death at the age of 91, Sarah poignantly wrote about her death in her last column: Growing old! growing old! Do they say it of me? Do they hint my fine fancies are faded and fled? That my garden of life, like the winter-swept tree, Is frozen and dying, or fallen and dead? Is the heart growing old, when each beautiful thing, Like a landscape at eve, looks more tenderly bright, And love sweeter seems, as the bird's wandering wing Draws nearer her nest at the coming of night? May 24, 1963 Today is the birthday of the American novelist and short-story writer Michael Chabon (“SHAY-bon”). In 2000, Michael wrote The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay, which won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 2001. Michael is married to the writer, Ayelet (“eye-YEll-it’”) Waldman, and together they have four children. They also have a writing studio - a little shingled shed in the garden in their backyard - a place that writers like Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Roald Dahl, George Bernard Shaw, Mark Twain, and Virginia Woolf all used and enjoyed. Michelle Slatella wrote about Chabon’s writing shed for Gardenista back in 2014. She wrote, “After it was renovated by Berkeley design-build firm Friedman Brueggemeyer, the studio became Chabon’s exclusive retreat and the subject of his 2001 essay “A Fortress of One’s Own” in This Old House magazine. [Ayelet said,] “We moved to that house when I had just started writing, and I hadn’t sold anything yet, so I didn’t think I deserved an office.” [Michael countered] “Then I had terrible repetitive stress injuries, and arthritis in my pinky finger, so I got an office out of the house, but that was super lonesome.”So Michael said [to his wife],“Let’s share.” “The studio has two separate but open work bays — [Ayelet’s] desk sits beneath a bulletin board she covered with color-coded notecards while… [Michael] writes in an Eames Lounge and Ottoman (he rocks when he works). “First, he had a desk, but then he moved over to the Eames chair, and that invalid swing arm laptop table he has now,” says [Ayelet]. “It’s exactly like a dentist’s setup. He battles carpel tunnel syndrome, and this setup works for now.” In his book Summerland, Michael wrote, “Can you imagine an infinite tree? ...A tree whose roots snake down all the way to the bottomest bottom of everything? ...if you've ever looked at a tree you've seen how its trunk divides into boughs, which divide yet again to branches, which divide into twigs, which divide again into twiglings. The whole mess splaying out in all directions, jutting and twisting and zigzagging. At the tips of the tips you might have a million tiny green shoots, scattered like the sparks of an exploding skyrocket.” Unearthed Words Hear him now as he toils. He has a long garden implement in his hand, and he is sending up the death rate in slug circles with a devastating rapidity. “Ta-ra-ra boom-de-ay.... Ta-ra-ra BOOM—" And the boom is a death-knell. As it rings softly out on the pleasant spring air, another stout slug has made the Great Change. ― P.G. Keith Richards said that he and Mick Jagger wrote it after staying at his house. One morning they were awakened by Keith's gardener, Jack Dyer. Jagger asked, “What’s that noise?” And Richards replied, "That's jumpin' Jack." Thanks for listening to The Daily Gardener. And remember: "For a happy, healthy life, garden every day."
"Nothing happens in the freezing cold," says Mirco, who is this week's special guest of the Dads + Bikes podcast experience. In Episode 37, Alix, Steve, Ian, and Mirco discuss the exhilaration of taking risks, specifically the option of doing the Skywalk at the CN Tower or bungee jumping into the ether while on vacation. Continue to create those impressions and tell those stories for years. We also talk about Sauble Bike Nights, which is led by local Brian Atkins who owns Amicis Coffee and GT Cycle, which is a weekly ride for anyone and everyone visiting the beach. Mirco discusses his family-first business called My Babbo, which helps you transform memories into stories with keepsake books and video tributes. For reference, 'Babbo means 'Dad' in Italian. The company has seen many changes over the years and works with individuals and businesses, specifically funeral homes. Now that My Baboo is 10-years old and a local business, Mirco says it's so important to know how to pivot through the years. Josh Campbell lit his cigar and extinguished the match. It was Inauguration Day 2017, and he was on the roof of his Washington D.C. apartment building. As the outgoing Obama’s made their way overhead on a helicopter, he turned to his father who had flown up from Texas for the event and remarked, “I hope Trump is good for the FBI.” Josh Campbell, former Special Assistant to the Director of the FBI, was chosen by James Comey because he didn’t shy away from speaking his mind. No matter what your politics are, you will want to hear him speak his mind and listen to his fly-on-the-wall account of some of the most momentous events in the modern history of the FBI. He was present at a meeting in Trump Tower on January 6, 2017, two weeks before the inauguration, that would later lead to his boss being fired; it would also lead to his former boss Bob Mueller being appointed as Special Counsel to head up an investigation into alleged collusion between Russia and the Trump campaign during the 2016 presidential election. Before the Report on the Investigation Into Russian Interference in the 2016 Presidential Election, and indeed before Mueller’s appointment, the FBI headed up a counterintelligence investigation into the allegations they codenamed Crossfire Hurricane (yes, after the first line of the Rolling Stones most performed and perhaps best loved song, 1968 hit Jumpin’ Jack Flash!). This is also the name of Campbell’s recent book – Crossfire Hurricane: Inside Donald Trump’s War on Justice & the FBI – written as part of his effort to speak out after leaving the FBI. Campbell, who is now a CNN correspondent, spoke to Andrew at an International Spy Museum event on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, 2021. We couldn’t get you two Irishmen, but we did get the next best thing: a Scot and an American with a very Scottish last name. This episode may lead to heated arguments: but if it does, it will merely be keeping in line with pub culture in Glasgow, Belfast and Dublin! Carl Sagan said, “extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.” Listen and decide for yourself what is and what is not extraordinary and what is and what is not evidence – because due diligence dictated that it couldn’t be all holding hands around the campfire between Andrew and Josh. P.S. Not too much longer before SpyCast 2.0

…it’s a gas, gas, gas. Ashlee breaks out the tissues and nostalgia for 1986's Jumpin’ Jack Flash while Carolyn adds even more context for the broader discussions about Whoopi’s career in the mid-1980’s. What backlash ensued? Can we still look back in fondness and enjoy it today? The answers may be as complicated as British intelligence spies, moles, and KGB meddling. Dive into Toms, Coons, Mulattoes, Mammies, and Bucks: An Interpretive History of Blacks in American Films by Donald Bogle Bogle talks about Whoopi's roles and how she doesn't necessarily represent the Black diaspora. That's okay with us because we saw ourselves in her and Black women are dynamic and unique, just like Whoopi. Learn more about Whoopi’s career in Divas on Screen: Black Women in American Film by Mia Mask: Mask talks about how Whoopi Goldberg’s stardom is unconventional and to a degree, unprecedented because foundationally as a comedic actress and performer, she already defies convention of who is seen as funny and respected in the space, and doubled with her race and appearance. She defies "acceptable" femininity with her dark skin and natural hair (locs) which was not a everyday/common American style in the early-mid 1980’s. Consistently, Goldberg has played characters that challenge assumptions and, to an extent, pushed back on racial stereotypes. She’s also had to fight to be seen as desirable in films. A love scene was cut from the film, Fatal Beauty despite her protests. “Closer reading of her star vehicles demonstrates the way her characters—and the situations in which they are place—trouble supposedly stable gender categories, critique notions of white identity, question whiteness as a social formation, and identify white racism.” Carolyn on Twitter @vfdpixie Ashlee on Twitter @AshleeTakesNote Sound edits by Carolyn Graphics by Ashlee Intro/Outro Music: I Got This by David Renda (felisyanstudios.com)

All good things must come to an end and, thankfully, all terrible things do as well. As we finish off the 2020 Whoopathon, we must ask ourselves, was it worth it? Absolutely not. But, who knows? Maybe we’ll return to the Whoopiverse again once we recover, or maybe we’ve already reached the human limit for Whoopi Goldberg exposure. 1) “Sally Go Round The Roses”, The Jaynets 2) “Jumpin’ Jack Flash”, The Rolling Stones 3) “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction”, Devo 4) “Chelsea Morning”, Joni Mitchell 5) “Remember (Walking in the Sand)”, The Shangri-Las 6) “Mannish Boy”, Muddy Waters 7) “Tupelo Blues”, John Lee Hocker 8) “Bang Bang”, Joe Cuba 9) “Mrs Robinson” Lemonheads 10) “C?a plane pour moi”, Plastic Bertrand 11) “Helpless”, Neil Young & The Band ‘The Last Waltz’ 12) “I Shall Be Released”, Bob Dylan, The Band & Friends ‘The Last Waltz’

Sometimes people just blow your mind with their depth of musical knowledge. Professor and author Rob Bowman did that to me this week on the show. This guy operates on a completely different plane, folks. His musical knowledge is matched only by his passion for it. He's been hired to write for the Stones, Dylan, Rush, and so many others. We talk about his latest book The Flyer Vault, and also Zeppelin's first time in Canada, which Beatles song has eight different hooks, the importance of musical experimentation in live contexts, and the unusual way Keef recorded the demo for Jumpin' Jack Flash. Unreal. Bowman's playlist: The Rolling Stones - Jumpin' Jack Flash Bob Dylan - Trying To Get To Heaven Patti Smith - Horses Public Enemy - Fight the Power James Brown - Cold Sweat
Athens, Georgia may have been known as the music hotbed during the middle 80's, but Drivin' N Cryin' out of nearby Atlanta was benefitting from the Georgia focus as well. Scarred But Smarter was their debut album created on a shoestring budget, with songs that reflect the sound of the Athens scene (where the album was recorded), but with lyrical depth and variety. After several down years, Drivin' N Cryin' is on the upswing again, and you can catch them on tour today. We are thrilled to have Eric Von Haessler of "The Von Haessler Doctrine" (WSB Radio) join us to present this great album. Eric’s knowledge on the band is extensive, as he produced and directed the 2012 documentary, “Scarred by Smarter: Life n Times of Drivin n Cryin.” Fans should check it out on Amazon Prime!Scarred but Smarter This rocking title track from the album is about picking yourself up and learning from the difficulties of life. "There's always a chance to get restarted to a new world, new life, scarred but smarter."Keys to Me This track discusses the hope that someone will "get" you, even if you don't understand yourself. "Turn me around and listen you to me."Bring Home the Bacon "Bring home the bacon and take out the trash, it's just another matter of fact." You can sense the Beatles influence in this song. This slower track provides a sense of the variety on the album.Stand Up and Fight for ItThis song in 3/4 time encourages living the life that you want to live, and don't let others define you. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:“Jumpin' Jack Flash” by the Rolling StonesWhoopi Goldberg starred in the movie with this title, featuring the song from decades past. STAFF PICKS:“The Future's So Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades” by Timbuk3Bruce's staff pick was popular on the Georgia Tech campus and at graduations at the time, but the line wasn't supposed to be taken so optimistically. It referenced nuclear holocaust.“To Be a Lover” by Billy IdolRob picked this hit single off Idol's “Whiplash Smile” album, which was a cover originally co-written and performed by Booker T. Jones and William Bell in 1968. The original title was "Forgot to Be Your Lover."“Don't Forget Me When I'm Gone” by Glass TigerBrian's staff pick features a Canadian group who got a boost with a credit and a guest appearance by Bryan Adams on this song. This is off their first album “The Thin Red Line.” “Will I Ever Understand You?” by BerlinDespite the name, Wayne points out that this band actually originated from California. This deeper cut describes a person looking in the mirror trying to understand herself. LAUGH TRACK:“Addicted to Spuds” by Weird Al YankovicWe finish off this episode with Weird Al's parody of the Robert Palmer classic.
Have you heard of the Little Free Library that some thoughtful people put up out by their sidewalks? Well, a few weeks ago, I saw a post by Hylton Jolliffe about his Little Free Herbary... Takes obvious inspiration from the little free library movement and it aims to help us share and connect with neighbors and others who might need herbs for cooking medicinal remedies fragrances etc. The idea takes obvious inspiration from the wonderful Little Free Library movement and it aims to help us share and connect with neighbors and others who might need herbs for cooking, medicinal remedies, fragrances, etc. Anyway, I loved Hylton's idea; I think it's just as cute as all get out. Hylton also has a Facebook groupthat you can go to to find out more information. Just search for "Little Free Herbary the next time your in Facebook. Brevities #OTD It was on this day, in 1812, the botanist Karl Theodor Hartweg was born. He'd started out in Paris, working for the botanical garden there, and then ended up going to the Chiswick garden in London. He was eager to travel and go on expeditions. He was sent to the Americas for the first time in 1836. He was supposed to be there for a three year project, but you know how plans go astray... He ended up being there're seven years. During Hartweg's time, native plants from Mexico, like dahlias and cacti, were all the rage. Hartweg's particular specialty was orchids. According to Merle Reinkka, the author of A History of the Orchid, Hartweg collected, "The most variable and comprehensive collection of New World Orchids made by a single individual in the first half of the [19th] century." During his time in America, Vera Cruz (Mexico) became something of a mecca for Plant Explorers. Hartweg once commented , “All the way from London just to look after weeds.” #OTD It's the anniversary of the 1969 death of Edgar Shannon Anderson. Anderson was an American botanist and his 1949 book Introgressive Hybridizationwas a major step forward in botanical genetics. While he was at Harvard, Anderson went on to work at the Bussey Institute; a biological arm of the University. It was there that he met Dorothy Moore, a fellow botanist. Dorothy was always by his side; going on hikes and collecting plant specimens. They were married in 1923. Anderson became the director of the Missouri Botanical Garden. After three years of administrative work, he went back to his passions of teaching and research. In 1952, Anderson published Plants, Man and Life. In the book, Anderson shared his methods of research and his perspective on life. It is a favorite among botanists. It contains not only scientific knowledge, but also folklore, some of Anderson's insight on early herbalists, and a little bit of philosophy. There's a charming account of Leonard Fuchs, a German physician and botanist. When Anderson wrote about him, he said, "He was a big, broad-shouldered Henry VIII sort of man; with handsome clothes and a general air of getting things done." #OTD It's the one-year anniversary of the death of the beloved botanist Professor Holenarasipur Yoganarasimham Mohan Ram (H.Y. Mohan Ram). Mohan Ram Left a tremendous legacy of the faculty and students of the botany department at Delhi University. He had Published over 240 research research papers get guided 32 PhD students and his research included studies in floral biology, plant physiology, insectivorous plants and the river weed family. In one of his autobiographies Mohan Ram said, "I wish I could be like a tree; deep rooted and firmly fixed, bearing a lofty bole and a broad canopy, continuously absorbing, synthesizing and renewing, bearing fragrant flowers and delicious fruits, unmindful of stresses and insults, resilient to changes and perpetually giving and not coveting. To this I must add tenacity, based on the remarkable example of a gingko tree, almost at the epicenter of the 1945 Hiroshima nuclear explosion, that sprouted from the root after its trunk had been completely demolished along with everything around it.” #OTD This month, the English gardening expert, Carol Klein, is hosting a brand-new television program called Great British Gardens. Carol's program has four parts and it explores four of the country's most distinctive gardens. Today's episode features Gravetye Manor at 9 PM. The gardens at Gravetye Manor were created by William Robinson; One of England's most distinguished gardeners. Unearthed Words Here are some thoughts on June from Vita Sackville-West: "It always seemed to me that the herbaceous peony is the very epitome of June. Larger than any rose, it has something of the cabbage rose's voluminous quality; and when it finally drops from the vase, it sheds its petticoats with a bump on the table, all in an intact heap, much as a rose will suddenly fall, making us look up from our book or conversation, to notice for one moment the death of what had still appeared to be a living beauty." Today's book recommendation: The Names of Plants by David Gledhill This book is a fantastic reference for gardeners. The first section botanical history. The second section shares a glossary of generic and specific plant names, along with detailed explanations of Botanical Nomenclature. Today's Garden Chore Plant some Doyle's Thornless Blackberry. 'Doyle's Thornless Blackberry' produces 10 to 20 gallons of berries per plant per year. (That's 10 times a normal bush.) Something Sweet Reviving the little botanic spark in your heart It was on this day 1968, that the Rolling Stones had No.1 single: Jumpin Jack Flash. Keith Richards said that he & Jagger wrote it after staying at Richards' house. They were awakened one morning by the gardener. Jagger asked what the noise? Richards said, "that's jumpin' Jack." Thanks for listening to the daily gardener, and remember: "For a happy, healthy life, garden every day."

"I'm a little black woman in a big silver box!" Jumpin Jack Flash (1986) directed by Penny Marshall and starring Whoopi Goldberg, Jonathan Pryce, and Carol Kane. Next Time: Gaslight (1944)
We celebrate Whoopi Goldberg from her days as a boundary-pushing stand-up comedian in the early ’80s to her current role as professional curmudgeon on “The View.”Discussed this week:“Whoopi Goldberg” (Ottessa Moshfegh, Garage magazine: Issue 16, Feb. 19, 2019)“Whoopi Goldberg: Direct From Broadway” (directed by Thomas Schlamme, 1985)“The Color Purple” (directed by Steven Spielberg, 1985)“Jumpin’ Jack Flash” (directed by Penny Marshall, 1986)“Burglar” (directed by Hugh Wilson, 1987)“Fatal Beauty” (directed by Tom Holland, 1987)“Clara’s Heart” (directed by Robert Mulligan, 1988)“Ghost” (directed by Jerry Zucker, 1990)Whoopi Goldberg winning the best supporting actress Oscar for her role in Ghost (1991)“Sister Act” (directed by Emile Ardolino, 1992)“The Fine Print: Danson in the Dark” (Louis Theroux, Spy magazine, February 1994)“The Associate” (directed by Donald Petrie, 1996)
Carole Penny Marshall (1943 - 2018) was a lead actress on one of the most popular shows in television history and would eventually find herself behind the camera. At first Penny did not feel comfortable behind the camera but she would find her voice as she would become the second female to earn a Best Picture nomination and the first female director to have a movie gross over $100 million. At only 7 feature films Penny would find herself as a significant figure in the movie industry. Aaron and Brad watch as she is pushed into JUMPIN JACK FLASH, finds her voice on BIG, combines all of her passions for A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN, and more!
This week, the Made in the 80s crew does Jumpin Jack Flash (‘86)
The first female director to break the $100M-grossing club, Penny Marshall got her start in TV before transitioning into a weirdly brief, highly beloved career as a feature film director. For today's episode we look at her debut feature, Jumpin' Jack Flash, before moving on to the one she'll be remembered for, A League Of Their Own.
Video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1zHvJTDgPM8 In this lesson, I bring to Dan my Epiphone ES-335 Pro with its upgraded pedals (courtesy of Pedro Martins - Brighton Guitar Repairs, https://guitarrepairsbrighton.com/), my PRS and my pedalboard. I spent quite a lot of this lesson without the camera rolling looking at these pedals and checking out my Gibson J45 which Pedro has also done an excellent job of setting up. We then set the camera rolling, which is a new video camera that I hope will improve the quality of the picture, and I ask Dan to go through some of the sounds which I should be aiming for in an upcoming gig my band and I are doing for my friend's 50th birthday. As always, much of what Dan tells me is stuffed with loads of gems and nuggets and a lot of the general rationale behind music over time and a consideration of what was available then. At just before 36 mins in, we swap my PRS for my Epiphone ES-335 with the Iron Gear Blues Engines (http://www.irongear.co.uk/irongear_pickups_006.htm). Dan gives it a go, but unhelpfully it's in Open G for my Stones parts. I show Dan what I do for Tumbling Dice and Jumpin Jack Flash and we look at the sound which the new pickups give it - pretty much straight away gaining a good tone for those songs. While Dan explains about effects and technologies over time I re-tune the guitar to standard tuning and finally Dan gives it a proper play to hear the different sounds available to it. It seems like a very impressive improvement to this guitar and I couldn't recommend Pedro Martins' work strongly enough. All the best, Dan and Gary https://tunein-toneup.com/ https://soundcloud.com/tunein-toneup
Right at the end of 2018, we lost the legendary actress/director/producer, Penny Marshall. We felt we’d be remiss if we did not discuss this brilliant woman’s life and the films she left behind, with a specific focus on one of our favorites, A League of Their Own (1992). ▶️ (4:00) A League of Their Own is the fictionalized version of the true story about the first season of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL). We’ll discuss the history behind film, how the idea originated and why this all-female sports film crosses gender boundaries. We’ll also let you in how this was the hot ticket movie for every actress in Hollywood at the time. ▶️ (29:13) We’ll give you a short history on the life of the woman who resurrected the story of the AAGPBL, the wonderfully sarcastic and grumbly, sassy and smart lady from the Bronx, Penny Marshall. ▶️ (40:00) A League of Their Own May be the quintessential Marshall film, but all her movies were full the sincerest warmth, heart and laughs. Instead of our usual Picks of the Week, we tell you about each of the films Marshall directed: Jumpin’ Jack Flash (1986), Big (1988), Awakenings (1990), A League of Their Own, Renaissance Man (1994), The Preacher’s Wife (1996) and Riding in Cars with Boys (2001). ▶️ (1:15:00) As this is our Penny Marshall tribute episode, this MurrayMoment takes us back to 1977 when Saturday Night Live went live from Mardi Gras in New Orleans on primetime TV. Billy was the fresh-faced new guy on SNL, and Marshall and Cindy Williams (Laverne and Shirley) were guest starring. But did this lofty feat of going live surrounded by party-happy, belligerent drunks successfully work out? Well... there’s a reason this episode is almost impossible to find. ▶️ (1:32:50) Pretty extra special close out for this episode, “Penny Marshall,” by Erik Mauck, a song written many years ago and feels appropriate for this episode. Whether you loved her on Laverne and Shirley, felt touched by one of her films or are maybe just learning about her now, we wanted to showcase Penny Marshall’s legacy, and spotlight the inspirational A League of Their Own. Marshall was truly a trailblazer and comedy icon who left all of Hollywood heartbroken.

Guest Ashleigh Hairston (Modern Family) joins as we continue our Whoopi Goldberg mini-series with her second film Jumpin' Jack Flash, a 1986 action comedy that was a moderate success. We try to determine what qualifies as a quintessential "Whoopi movie", how Whoopi became such a bonafide movie star, if Burglar and Jumpin Jack Flash are basically the same movie, and whether or not this film helped the cause.FOLLOW BLACK MEN CAN'T JUMP [IN HOLLYWOOD]:https://twitter.com/blackmenpodcasthttps://www.instagram.com/blackmenpodcastBUY BLACK MEN CAN'T JUMP [IN HOLLYWOOD] MERCH:https://www.teepublic.com/stores/black-men-can-t-jump-in-hollywoodSUPPORT BLACK MEN CAN'T JUMP [IN HOLLYWOOD] ON PATREON:https://www.patreon.com/BMCJBLACK MEN CAN'T JUMP [IN HOLLYWOOD] IS A FOREVER DOG PODCAST:https://foreverdogpodcasts.com/podcasts/black-men-cant-jump-in-hollywood
The Rolling Stones fluttu Jumpin Jack Flash frá árinu 1968. Þá var að lokum rætt um orkumál heimsins á tímum vaxandi vitunda um hlýnun andrúmsloftsins. Ketill Sigurjónsson, lögfræðingur, er ráðgjafi á sviði orkumála. Comienza sonando Simpathy for the devil, porque, amigos, ya están tocando The Rolling Stones. Un ejemplo: Its only rock and roll.

Actor and musician Martin Kemp chooses Long Distance Love performed by Little Feat and Jumpin' Jack Flash by The Rolling Stones.
Friend of the podcast Chris O'Connor joins us this week as we discuss Jumpin' Jack Flash, a bizarre '80s spy comedy starring Whoopi Goldberg. This movie has no jokes, no coherent plot, and makes absolutely no sense, but you know what? Jon Lovitz is pretty hot in it.

Mathew forces the gang to talk about Whoopi Goldberg's Jumpin Jack Flash (1986), Justin explains how Versus (2000) changed his life, and Will drags everyone through the mud with Super Mario Bros (1993). It's a star studded journey featuring laughs, arguments and enough nostalgia to choke King Koopa.
The late CHRIS THOMPSON was a film and television creator, writer, and producer. He began writing for television with "Blanky's Beauties", before becoming a writer and eventually executive producer for the hit series "Laverne and Shirley". He created and produced "Bosom Buddies" for Paramount Studios, launching Tom Hanks' career, then he wrote two feature films - "Back to the Beach" and "Jumpin' Jack Flash" - as well as created the shows "Action" for FOX and "Ladies' Man" for CBS. He most recently created the hit Disney Channel show "Shake It Up!", and was an executive producer and/or creative consultant for dozens of shows, and created over 20 network tv pilots.

Don bravely did this podcast without a microphone boom. Ben feels good despite his messy office. Ben mentions that he is currently obsessed with the Rolling Stones and likes the Shine a Light Film, Jumpin’ Jack Flash, (the song not so much the Whoopi Goldberg spy comedy film), and the song Salt of the Earth from the Stones album Beggars Banquet. They then discuss movies every kid needs to see before they turn thirteen such as Indiana Jones, Ghostbusters, E.T., and Diary of a Wimpy Kid and classic kids books including The Hardy Boys, Encyclopedia Brown, Three Investigators, Key to the Treasure, and A Wrinkle in Time. The guys then discuss their recovery after IAFP, as a follow-up to FST 66. As president of IAFP Don was very busy at the conference with meetings, breakfasts, committee responsibilities, and other assorted duties. He made the conference manageable by shirking his student poster responsibilities, not going to any talks, and skipping PDG meetings. He did however give a talk on based on a paper he has been working on with his CDC and EHS-Net (pronounced S-net) colleagues. The guys then drift to other podcasts, especially Alton Brown’s series and in particular one he did with William Shatner. If you like podcasts, food, Alton Brown, or William Shatner, this stupendous podcast is highly recommended for you. Thirty-five minutes in they decide that they should talk about food safety and get to Outbreak Flashback about a 2008 Salmonella Saintpaul outbreak that affected over 1400 nationally (as per Michelle Danyluk's suggestion. Initial CDC epidemiology analysis indicated the illnesses were associated with eating tomato dishes and FDA issued a health advisory on tomatoes. This NEJM article shows the case control studies that layout why the CDC initially thought the source was tomatoes. After tomatoes were removed from the market the illness continued and with additional data available the CDC later concluded that jalapeño and Serrano peppers were the likely source. Epidemiologic analysis was confounded by the fact that many illnesses were from restaurants where peppers were in dishes that contained multiple ingredients. Additionally the production and supply chain was very complex as is shown in the FDA’s traceback diagram. A key aspect of this outbreak is that it significantly harmed reputation and sales of the tomato industry, which estimates $400 million lost dollars as a result of the FDA’s erroneous health advisory. Talk turned to growers seeking indemnification or financial compensation for situations when the government agencies are incorrect about outbreaks. The guys then discuss a voluntary recall by Wawona Packing Co. on fresh peaches and stone fruit. A receiving company in Australia detected the presence of Listeria monocytogenes. This later led to a recall of baked goods in Wegman’s supermarket chain presumably because Wegman’s baking process is not validated. There are a surprisingly high number of comments posted to the Wegman’s article in Food Safety News which caused the guys to consider if the public health implications of this recall are more significant than first thought. For Listeria monocytogenes (LM) there are not a lot of outbreaks but rather sporadic cases; CDC estimates in 2013 there were 0.26 LM illness cases per 100,000 people in the US (for every case reported there are 2 cases not diagnosed). The guys then discuss food safety gaps common in fresh produce including poorly executed washing processes and traceability deficiencies. In after dark the guys discuss that Dean Richard Linton, Dean of the NCSU College of Ag, has selected the 2014 Dean’s ice cream which is dark chocolate, tart cherries, chocolate chunks and marshmallow swirl.
If multidisciplinary awards are the relevant criteria, then Hey, An Actor is profiling one of the greatest entertainers working today: Whoopi Goldberg.
Comedian/actor/writer Jeffery Joseph joins me this week. Jeffery has appeared in films such as Jumpin Jack Flash, Scrooged, and also wrote for In Living Color. Recently, he has been a writing consultant on Chris Rock's movie, and doing a lot of stand up on the alternative scene.
This week we discuss Jumpin' Jack Flash, limousine-themed high schools and bouncing back from a cry. Plus—Andrew makes pulling away tablecloths his "thing".

Hey there everybody! It’s that time again where Leland and Spooky travel back in time to the world of the 1980s: a place where neon ruled, computers were the size of small cars, and everybody knew how to walk like an Egyptian. This week, we watched the Whoopi Goldberg comedy “classic” Jumpin’ Jack Flash, the story... The post Movie Issues: Jumpin’ Jack Flash first appeared on Pixelated Geek.
Terry Doolittle (Whoopi Goldberg) works with computers in a bank office. She routinely talks with others via her computer, but one day she connects with a mysterious user by the name of Jumpin' Jack Flash (Jonathan Pryce). It takes her a while to decode his message, but Terry figures out that Jack is a British secret agent trapped behind enemy lines. Terry agrees to help him, but her activities attract the attention of the KGB, who want to know Jack's real identity and will kill to get it. Stream online: https://amzn.to/3akoeNu

Listen to the interview here! Tell me a little about yourself and your writing.I'm a thirtysomething Scottish writer who's queer in a few senses of the term. I guess I write the sort of pulp modernist stuff that has people confused over which genre it sits in, with SF, Fantasy and Horror tropes all mixing it up with a very literary sensibility (I read too much James Joyce as a kid and way too muc William Burroughs). Thing is, I grew up with the default label for that -- books like Zelazny's ROADMARKS or Silverberg's THE BOOK OF SKULLS or Moorcock's CORNELIUS QUARTET -- being SF, but these days it seems to be more commonly called Fantasy... or cross-genre, or slipstream, interstitial, New Wave, New Weird, New Wave Fabulist -- I've sort of given up on all these labels. These days I just call it strange fiction. Tell me about the story that you've created a soundtrack/playlist for.VELLUM was my first book, and the first half of a diptych, THE BOOK OF ALL HOURS, completed with INK. I think of it as kind of a "Cubist fantasy". The narrative is non-linear, with the story fragmented across this Moorcockian multiverse, the Vellum of the title, with the characters playing out their roles (or trying to escape them) across the various folds of the Vellum, in different incarnations. The basic idea is that you've got a language called the Cant which allows humans to "write" reality on that Vellum. Humans who get themselves rewritten by the Cant basically become gods amongst men -- unkin. The downside of this is that you have one group of these unkin, the Covenant, who see themselves as angels of God, and they're basically building up to an apocalypse where they intend to wipe out all opposition. The heroes are rogues unkin who don't want to participate in this War in Heaven on either side; they remember what it is to be human and just want to live like the rest of us. It's basically about their struggle to survive as reality falls apart around them. What is your playlist? TV Eye, The StoogesHoppípolla, Sigur RosTenderness and Scar Tissue, Five Seconds to Self-DestructionJumpin' Jack Flash, The Rolling StonesThe Green Fields of France, The FureysFairytale of New York, The Pogues & Kirsty MacCollThe Wrecker and the Wrecked, Five Seconds to Self-DestructionSearch and Destroy, The StoogesAnarchy in the UK, Sex PistolsNancy Boy, PlaceboI Wanna Be Your Dog, The StoogesGoodbye You Fucking Thief, G-PlanThe Drama of Being With You, Five Seconds to Self-DestructionOperation Jack Goes Boom, Five Seconds to Self-DestructionIf You Love Me, You'd Destroy Me, Aereogramme (& Hal Duncan) What does music mean to you? To your writing?I love music. Who doesn't? If I had the talent to actually sing or play an instrument I'd totally be in a band. It might not be a good band but, it'd be... enthusiastic, if nothing else. The poetry I write is pretty traditionally lyrical because I'm drawn to the musical patterning, I guess -- the rhythm and rhyme. Even my prose has a tendency towards the lyrical at times. I've actually written a lot of songs -- lyrics and music that exists in my head (but that I don't, unfortunately, have any effective way of communicating to others, given my appalling singing voice.) Hell, I've got a full musical scripted as a libretto, all the songs -- duets, reprises, medleys, the full whack -- and it sounds great in my head. If I could play piano, write sheet music or something, I'd be well up for trying to stage it. But hey ho. The nearest I've got to actually making music is a collaboration with the band Aereogramme for the Ballads of the Book album that came out last year from Chemikal Underground, that and fiddling around on my own with Apple's Garageband software. That's where the Five Seconds to Self-Destruction stuff comes from actually; it's kind of a proper actual soundtrack to VELLUM and INK in the sense that the tracks were put together with the books in mind, scenes and characters. It may not be terribly proffessional at all, but sod it; I like it. What kind of music do you like to write to?I don't actually write to music at all, I'm afraid. It's too distracting, I find. I can't focus on my words with someone else's being sung in my ear. And even if it's instrumental music, my attention gets drawn away into it so I lose focus on the text. The thing is, voice is a big part of my writing, and if you're working on prose that has it's own rhythm, even a soundscapey post-rock track that matches the mood of a scene perfectly is liable to clash with what's going on in my head. I mean, if you're working out a sentence, you write down your first version, read it through, change a few words, read it through again, and repeat until it flows right. So it's like editing some piece of experimental music: record, rewind and play; rewind, cut here, splice there, and play; and so on. To me, it's like trying to edit one track with another track playing constantly in the background, and not being rewinded in time to the one you're working on. If this story was made into a movie, who would you want to do the soundtrack?Oh, that's kind of a hard one. There's kind of two aspects to the sound I'd want to be there. I'd want the sort of soundscape thing you get from post-rock, from bands like Sigur Ros, Kinski, Aereogramme, Mogwai, G-Plan, mainly instrumental, shifting through quiet and loud phases, really complex and interesting. But at the same time, I'd want some of the three-minute, balls-out garage/punk blast-in-the-face quality you get from The Stooges or the Sex Pistols. I don't know if there's one band that could do that. Then again, Aereogramme's earlier stuff is pretty full-on guitar, so I reckon they'd be fucking awesome. And since they called it quits last year after their latest (and I think best) album, this'd mean they'd have to get back together, right? So, yeah, I'll go with them. They'd do a fucking awesome job. To learn more about Hal, visit his blog Notes from the Geek Show.Stop by next week for my interview with author Jeff Sypeck.
