This week, I invited my four siblings--Cassie Gadd, Brad Singley, Brett Singley, and Hayley Kirkland--into the studio to talk about our top family movies. We intended to each share 5 favorite movies from our childhood and then in our own families, but we definitely got carried away. I'm going to list our childhood movies and then our current favorite family movies by the person who recommended them. I'll omit the ones that we mentioned but do not recommend. (Sorry, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang) We also talk about how we make family movie nights happen and what they look like for each of us. This week, like the sand-people of Arrakis and Beetlejuice audiences before us, we're afraid of worms (worms!) as guest Rachel Hadaway (of Rachel's Chart Chat on The People Are The Enemy) goes for a steeply inclined stroll with us to breathe the mountain air in beautiful Nelson, Washington as circle back to the coziness of the Steve Martin rom-com. It's 1987's Roxanne, directed by Fred Schepisi, written by Steve Martin, and starring Martin opposite Daryl Hannah, Shelley Duvall, Rick Rossovich, John Kapelos, Fred Willard, Michael J. Pollard, Damon Wayans and of course Nelson, British Columbia, which almost played itself! A landmark 80s film for Canadians seeing their country onscreen, north of the border it seems more beloved for its locations than its clever reworking of Cyrano de Bergerac for a modern context. But this is a funny movie with a romance that works, brought to us from the dusty DVR box of a long-time booster of our show who we were happy to finally bring on! Plus: As we put Halloween season behind us, Justin goes deep on the truly terrible Blade: Trinity. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening along, Roxanne is not currently available to stream in Canada, but can be found on Amazon Prime in America at the time of publication. Other works referenced on this episode include Saturday Night, Challengers, Wicked, Blade, Blade II, Hellboy II: The Golden Army, The Witches of Eastwick, Practical Magic, V/H/S/94, So I Married An Axe Murderer, A Serious Man, The Creature From The Black Lagoon, The Reality Show Show, 8 Mile, The Lonely Guy, Review, Police Academy, The Muppet Babies, Set It Up, and Looney Tunes among others. We'll be back next week as No-Theme-ber continues... with what? We don't actually know yet. So keep it locked here to find out. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!
This week, Danielle and Millie discuss PERMANENT RECORD (1988) and SO I MARRIED AN AXE MURDERER (1993), the passage of time, Alan Boyce being the hottest man ever, and Mike Myers' predilection for saggy tighty-whities. It was during this time that Steven got his big break and was booked for his first “Tonight Show” appearance on Friday, August 6, 1982. The king of late night enjoyed the performance so much he invited Steven to appear again the following Thursday, a rarity on “The Tonight Show.” His back-to-back appearances helped put his fledgling career into high gear. The comic soon found himself performing his off-beat routines on “Saturday Night Live,” “Late Night with David Letterman,” and numerous trips back to “The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson.”Wright expanded his comedy career to include comedy albums, film and television appearances. His 1985 debut album, I Have A Pony, earned him a Grammy nomination. In 1985, Steven starred in his first HBO Special “A Steven Wright Special.” In 1989, Steven was honored with an Academy Award for Best Short Film for his film entitled “The Appointments of Dennis Jennings” in which he starred and co-wrote. Other stars of the film included “Roseanne's” Laurie Metcalf and British comedian, Rowan Atkinson. Steve also appeared as a sitcom actor in MGM's “Speechless” with Harry Shearer, and as a Mountie in the MGM release “Canadian Bacon”, opposite the late John Candy. In 1999, Steven played a guest starring role in Albert Brooks' film “The Muse” starring Brooks, Sharon Stone, Andie MacDowell, and Jeff Bridges. Whoa man! Mark welcomes west coaster OT Garcia back on the show to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Mike Myers mystery comedy So I Married An Axe Murderer. Although it didn't make much money at the box office when it was released in US theaters on July 30, 1993, it made quite an impression over the years and holds up decades later. The San Francisco-set movie gave us sights (that cinematography!), sounds (that amazing 90s soundtrack and jazzy poetry!), and suspense (Ralph!), plus Myers playing two roles and showing off his bum! PS. Mark's dad makes a little cameo to give another comedy from this time, Coneheads, some love.

Craddock returns to the 'Cast to chat with Jonny and Darin about Thomas Schlamme's 1993 cult comedy SO I MARRIED AN AXE MURDERER, starring Mike Myers as a beat poet and serial relationship-phobe who also can't seem to treat dramatic scenes very seriously. Dragon on The Couch: The Dragon watched The Monster Club (Shudder), she enjoyed it and is a fan of Vincent Price. Next she watched Wishmaster (Tubi), a 90's horror film. She thought it was ok and felt it was a passable C-list horror movie. Next, she watched The Woman King (Theatres). She enjoyed the film, but felt it was just a bit too long. Finally, she watched Pearl (Theatres), the Prequel to X. She really liked it, especially its tone and Mia Goth's acting. Berto on the Bed: Berto watched Whiplash (HBO), he really loved it and thought it was such a great study on what it takes to be great. Next, he watched Cobra Kai (Netflix), season 5 was recently released. He thought it started slow, but eventually got better. Next, he watched Synecdoche; New York (Hulu), an Andy Kaufman film. He thought it was extremely weird but loved it. Next, he watched Lord of War (HBO), a movie where Nic Cage plays an arms dealer. He thought it had good moments but the film felt too rushed. He watched Cabin Fever (Prime), Eli Roth's first film. He thought it was a good fun 2000's horror film. Next, he watched The Possession (HBO), an exorcism film. He thought it was an ok film, nothing special but not a waste of time. He watched Death Spa (Tubi). He felt it was a good 80's silly slasher. He next watched Flight of The Navigator (Disney+), which he thought was ok and an ET ripoff. Finally, for Joe Bob Corner, Berto watched Things (Shudder), which he thought was a horrible film, and Evilspeak (Shudder), which was an ok but odd 90's horror film Dragon at the Movies: This week's deep dive is the 1993 comedy So I Married An Axe Murderer, currently streaming on Hulu.

On this episode I'll discuss the forgotten gem, the 1993 comedy So, I Married an Axe Murderer starring a young Mike Myers! So, give it a listen what else have you got to do?
After "Wayne's World" scored a near perfect 0.25 Wipe Score, the Shat Crew was drooling over the prospect of covering Mike Myers' follow-up flop with a knockout supporting cast: "So I Married An Axe Murderer." Ash loved it as a kid, and it inspired Gene to perform beat poetry. But Big D has always kept the movie at arm's length. In this episode, we examine the 1993 romantic black comedy and reminisce about '90s music, coffee shop culture, shabby chic home decor, handsy moms, Alan Arkin's genius, and whether Mike Myers makes Adam Sandler seem romantic. The Shat Crew also discusses trust in relationships, appropriate honeymoon destinations, whether Charlie even deserves Harriet, and whether Mike Myers can act when he isn't wearing a costume. We have been subjecting ourselves to THE PENTAVERATE for reasons it is hard to explain so when Johnny Utah responded to our call for suggestions of movies that listeners think are worth revisiting, Mike Myers 1993 follow up to the pop culture smash hit WAYNE'S WORLD seemed like a good fit with our viewing trends. It was a surprise to me though that this week's movie, SO I MARRIED AN AXE MURDERER, would reference the recent Netflix's series central conceit, proving the Canadian has had the idea in gestation for over 30 years. Charlie (Myers) is a commitment phobic beat poet who meets butcher and potential serial killer Harriet (Nancy Travis) when purchasing a haggis at "Meats of The World" in San Francisco. Featuring many of the Myers staples which have persisted into his recent output; portraying multiple characters on screen (how long until a Mike Myers film only stars Mike Myers?), schediaphilia, genre or self-aware characters, euphemisms and Scottishness, this is a pretty mediocre movie with a decent idea at its core; the commitment phobic man who finds reasons not to be with women finally taking the plunge with someone only to find out that they are hiding a few secrets. Sadly, the leads have absolutely no chemistry (and now that I think about it, Myers is sort of weirdly asexual given how much of his stuff is about innuendo and how often it relies on the reproductive parts of the human anatomy), and the jokes veer dangerously into bad comedy club style improv at times. It has an absolutely f****g awful 90's soundtrack featuring "There She Goes" on four occasions during the films run time and unironic use of the Spin Doctors "Two Princes", there are plot holes everywhere, Harriet is a terrible butcher and you know how concerned I am about proper meat preparation, and everyone's hair is appalling. Given all of this it would seem a no-brainer that we would be advising that you give this one a wide berth but with the Bad Dads ultimate arbitration of taste reduced to a single question of "were you not entertained?" and most of us agreeing that there were enough good cameos, weird or unusual touches or sharp writing that we were to some degree or another, well, make of that what you will. Probably that we have terrible taste or that we're easily pleased simpletons, either are true.

Editors - Joseph Krings ACE and Jasmin Way THE PENTAVERATE editors, Joseph Krings ACE and Jasmin Way, first met when Jasmin assisted Joe on the indie feature, THE REBEL IN THE RYE (2017); a biopic about reclusive author J.D. Salinger. Joe was so impressed with the way that Jasmin cut scenes for that film that he knew she was the right choice to join him as co-editor on Myers' new comedy series. THE PENTAVERATE was created by Mike Myers for Netflix and features Myers playing eight different parts throughout the six-episode series. Initially mentioned in Myers' film, SO I MARRIED AN AXE MURDERER (1993), THE PENTAVERATE is about a Canadian journalist who tries to uncover the truth about a secret society of five men who have controlled the world since 1347. JOSEPH KRINGS ACE Joe Krings began his career as a commercial editor in New York City, but quickly grew restless knowing that his real passion was for long form film and television projects. One of Joe's earliest films was a documentary called SUPERMENSCH (2013), helmed by THE PENTAVERATE creator, Mike Myers. From there Joe would go on to make a name for himself with the dramedy feature, CAPTAIN FANTASTIC (2016) and indie films such as the aforementioned THE REBEL IN THE RYE (2017) and Sundance stand-outs, AFTER THE WEDDING (2019) and THE EVENING HOUR (2020). JASMIN WAY Jasmin Way is a New York-based film and television editor. Her first feature, SOLACE (2018) premiered at the Los Angeles Film Festival and won Best Ensemble Cast. Her second documentary feature was the critically-acclaimed THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING (2018) about the history of women in film behind the scenes and in front of the camera. It premiered at the Toronto Film Festival and was the runner-up for the People's Choice award. In addition to her work on THE PENTAVERATE, Jasmin also worked as an editor on the latest season of David Letterman's MY NEXT GUEST NEEDS NO INTRODUCTION (2022). Editing THE PENTAVERATE In our discussion with THE PENTAVERATE editors Joseph Krings ACE and Jasmin Way, we talk about: The challenge of editing a show where one actor plays eight characters Incorporating Netflix's revolutionary "Fix Plix" technology Cutting out profanity to increase the vulgarity The importance of diction in comedy Why you should never follow up an orgy scene with a shot of children The Credits Get your free 100GB of media transfer at MASV Visit ExtremeMusic for all your production audio needs Download your free trial of Avid Media Composer Ultimate Subscribe to The Rough Cut podcast and never miss an episode Leave me a message on The Rough Cut website Visit The Rough Cut on YouTube

Today on the show we have legendary film producer Cary Woods. Cary Woods is a film producer best known for producing worldwide blockbusters such as Scream and Godzilla, the beloved independent films Kids, Cop Land, and Gummo, and modern classics like Rudy and Swingers.Woods is also responsible for producing the breakthrough features of such notable directors as James Mangold, Doug Liman, M. Night Shyamalan, Alexander Payne, Harmony Korine, and Larry Clark, as well as the screenwriting debuts of Jon Favreau, Kevin Williamson, and Scott Rosenberg.Woods' filmography features a lineup of A-List actors, including: Robert Downey, Jr., Robert De Niro, Sylvester Stallone, Marisa Tomei, Christopher Walken, Harvey Keitel, Mike Myers, Laura Dern, Heather Graham, Ray Liotta, Burt Reynolds, Drew Barrymore, Matthew Broderick, Courteney Cox, Timothy Hutton, Andy Garcia, Neve Campbell, Sean Astin, Michael Rapaport, Jean Reno, and Steve Buscemi.Born and raised in the Bronx, Woods graduated from the USC Gould School of Law before beginning his career at the William Morris Agency (now WME). As an agent, Woods represented - and in many cases introduced audiences to - the likes of Gus Van Sant, Uma Thurman, Jennifer Connelly, Milla Jovovich, Charlie Sheen, Matt Dillon, Todd Solondz, and most prominently, Gregory Peck.At WMA, Woods also represented many of the industry's most successful stand-up comedians including Sam Kinison, Andrew Dice Clay, Gilbert Gottfried, Sandra Bernhard, Tommy Davidson, and Jackie Mason. After developing the Indie favorites Heathers and Drugstore Cowboy as an agent, Woods accepted a position at Sony Pictures Entertainment (the parent company of Columbia Pictures and TriStar Pictures) as a Vice President - Office of the Chairman, reporting directly to Peter Guber. Woods later segued to a production deal at Sony, resulting in the release of a succession of iconic films, including So I Married An Axe Murderer, Rudy, Only You, and Threesome. After starting his own production company - Independent Pictures - the explosive release of the 1995 cultural phenomenon Kids (starring then-newcomers Rosario Dawson and Chloe Sevigny) began a streak of culturally significant, critically-acclaimed independent films produced by Woods under his banner. The next few years saw the releases of Citizen Ruth (the first film from future two-time Oscar winner Alexander Payne), Beautiful Girls (which introduced American audiences to Natalie Portman), and Swingers (springboarding Vince Vaughn to comedy mega-stardom).His 1996 film Scream (the most successful film of "Master of Horror" Wes Craven's career) marked a turning point for the entire genre, grossing over $170 million and setting a box office record that would stand for 22 years. The film instantly and single-handedly pivoted horror toward postmodernism, spawning a massive billion-dollar franchise (consisting of successful sequels, a TV series, toys, and Halloween costumes), as well as inspiring countless knock-offs in the years since.Gummo - the directorial debut of Kids' screenwriter Harmony Korine - received the FIPRESCI Prize at the 1997 Venice Film Festival. Bernando Bertolucci, the famed director of Last Tango in Paris, praised the film, calling it "The one revolutionary film of the late 20th century."In 1998, the first US-produced entry of the iconic Godzilla film franchise would become Woods' and Independent Pictures' single highest-grossing film, earning nearly $400 million.Woods would go on to serve as co-Chairman, and Chief Creative Officer of Plum TV, in which he was a founding partner. Broadcasting in the nation's most affluent markets (i.e. Aspen, the Hamptons, Miami Beach), the luxury lifestyle network would go on to earn eight Emmy Awards.Enjoy my conversation with Cary Woods.
