Tread Perilously's month of failed prestige TV continues with the pilot episode of Manhattan: "You Always Hurt The Ones You Love." When Charlie accepts a blind offer to work at a government facility in New Mexico, he is shocked to discover he will be helping to design an atomic bomb. His wife, Abby, adjusts to the strange way of life out on the plains as no one can grow crops in the local soil and all the wives build a society of their own. Meanwhile, renegade scientist Frank Winter must prove his theory to Oppenheimer to save his group from being shut down. Erik and Justin end up having a spirited discussion about history, historical inaccuracies, and the Super Soldier Program. Erik gets distracted by star Rachel Brosnahan in 1940s outfits while Justin can't completely wash away co-star Ashely Zuckerman's resemblance to The Office's B.J. Novak. John Benjamin Hickey's strengths as Frank are also called into question. The filmography of episode director Thomas Schlamme leads into the weeds. A wild Katja Herbers appears. Harry Lloyd britians things up as well. Justin tries to offer an opinion based on watching the whole series and Walter White becomes strangely important.

In 2020, Harry Lloyd was a little lost. He had just finished University and couldn't chase his dream of being a cowboy in America due to the COVID-19 pandemic. At the same time, we'djust started the Humans of Agriculture Podcast and Harry was recommended to listen, which turned out to be a pretty pivotal moment for him.  "The one thing I took away from the podcast is to say yes. Plan A's not going to happen anytime soon, so I'll just start saying yes to opportunities and see where it leads me."Harry grew up in Kyabram, Victoria, where he calls the safest place on the planet. He loved his upbringing on his family's dairy farm and now calls Kyabram home again, farming in partnership with his brother.  Tragically, Harry's life was turned on it's head at the age of 18 when his Dad suddenly passed away. The community rallied around his family and helped them milk cows as they navigated what happened to the farm and their cattle.  At the time, he didn't himself in farming and instead was going into Sports Management at University. But soon into his course, he was missing the farm and found himself more interested in his mates Agribusiness course. So he made the switch. He found his niche passion in regenerative agriculture and how to look after animals, paddocks and the planet more broadly.  "I was conscious about the idea of farming in a way that not only is sustainable, but also benefits the environment and improves it for those future generations." Harry wants to do things differently, while being mindful that you can't be sustainable if you're not profitable and you can't throw away everything that we've learned over the years.  "The opportunity to trial so many different things is why I like agriculture. Especially dairy, because you can do something and you'll see the results the very next day."  This episode is delivered in a Paid partnership with Dairy Australia, if you're interested in a Career in Dairy - head to Dairy Jobs Matter00:00 Introduction and Impact of Humans of Agriculture Podcast04:20 Growing Up in Kyabram and Community Involvement08:14 Family Farm and Dealing with Tragedy09:39 Career Path and Interest in Regenerative Agriculture14:24 Learning and Working on Different Farms29:30 Opportunities in Dairy Farming for Young People33:47 Find your Career in Dairy at Dairyjobsmatter.com.au

EA - Wheeling and dealing: An internal bargaining approach to moral uncertainty by MichaelPlant

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Wheeling and dealing: An internal bargaining approach to moral uncertainty, published by MichaelPlant on July 10, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. In this post, I explore and evaluate an internal bargaining (IB) approach to moral uncertainty. On this account, the appropriate decision under moral uncertainty is the one that would be reached as the result of negotiations between agents representing the interests of each moral theory, who are awarded your resources in proportion to your credence in that theory. This has only been discussed so far by Greaves and Cotton-Barratt (2019), who give a technical account of the approach and tentatively conclude that the view is inferior to the leading alternative approach to moral uncertainty, maximise expected choiceworthiness (MEC). I provide a more intuitive sketch of how internal bargaining works, and do so in a wide range of cases. On the basis of the cases, as well as considering some challenges for the view and its theoretical features, I tentatively conclude it is superior to MEC. I close by noting one implication relevant to effective altruists: while MEC seems to push us towards a (fanatical) adherence to longtermism, internal bargaining would provide a justification for something like worldview diversification. Notes to reader: (1) I'm deliberately writing this in a fairly rough-and-ready way rather than as a piece of polished philosophy. If I had to write it as the latter, I don't think it would get written for perhaps another year or two. I'll shortly begin working on this topic with Harry Lloyd, an HLI Summer Research Fellow, and I wanted to organise and share my thoughts before doing that. In the spirit of Blaise Pascal, I should say that if I had had more time, I would have written something shorter. (2) This can be considered a ‘red-team' of current EA thinking. 1. Introduction When philosophers introduce the idea of moral uncertainty - uncertainty about what we ought, morally, to do - they often quickly point out that we are used to making decisions in the face of empirical uncertainty all the time. Here's the standard case of empirical uncertainty: it might rain tomorrow, but it might not. Should you pack an umbrella? The standard response to this is to apply expected utility theory: you need to think about the chance of it raining, the cost of carrying an umbrella, and the cost of getting wet if you don't carry an umbrella. Or, more formally, you need to assign credences (strengths of belief) and utilities (numbers representing value) to the various outcomes. Hence, when it's pointed out that we're also often uncertain about what we ought to do - should we, for example, be consequentialists or deontologists? - the standard thought is that our account of moral uncertainty should probably work much like our account of empirical uncertainty. The analogous account for moral uncertainty is called maximise expected choiceworthiness (MEC) (MacAskill, Ord, Bkyvist, 2020). The basic idea is that we need to assign credences to the various theories as well as a numerical value on how choiceworthy the relevant options are on those theories. The standard case to illuminate this is: Meat or Salad: You are choosing whether to eat meat from a factory farm or have a salad instead. You have a 40% credence in View A, a deontological theory on which eating meat is seriously morally wrong and a 60% credence in View B, a consequentialist theory on which both choices are permissible. You'd prefer to eat meat. Intuitively, you ought to eat the salad. Why? Even though you have less credence in A than B, when we consider the relative stakes for each view, we notice that View A cares much more about avoiding the meat. Hence, go for the salad as that maximises choiceworthiness. MEC is subject to various objections (see MacAskill, O...

We had the pleasure of interviewing Waiting For Smith over Zoom video! Waiting For Smith is singer/songwriter Harry Lloyd. Formerly a ski instructor in the French Alps, Lloyd broke his back in two places during avalanche training. Wondering whether he'd survive in the helicopter on the way to the hospital, he had an epiphany that if he was ok, he should dedicate his life to music. After spending a year in bed recuperating and learning to play guitar, he formed Waiting For Smith, named after endlessly waiting for his original drummer Smith to show up. Following the release of the effervescent “Long Life”, Waiting For Smith unveils “Lines of Love”, emphasising that in times of doubt, often all we need is a compassionate ear. "It's often difficult to over speculate, one minute you're up and then you're down and that's your day." LINES OF LOVE "For me, that's life – or my life for sure – in a tiny lyrical nutshell. It sways back and forth between unbridled joy and moments of great despair. But I guess I'd be a lousy songwriter if I didn't feel anything…"

On the latest episode of #talkinthrones, Professor Pat takes a break and Chris "The TV Nerd" Evanko comes in to help Dom break down Episode 6 of this tale of Ice & Fire in their Game of Thrones recap series, entitled "A Golden Crown." After a slight scheduling mix up, Dom & Pat return for their signature weekly recap show. In this episode, directed by Daniel Minahan and the only episode that Benioff & Weiss co-wrote with Buffy the Vampire slayer alumni Jane Espensen, things are truly shaping up for war. Ned is given control of the realm by Robert, and makes a bold move against the Lannisters before being given the last clue he needs to discover the truth he's been seeking. Tyrion, also our focus character, manages to figure out a way out of his sticky situation with his usage of Trial by Combat, something that he would use later on in the franchise to his benefit. As is covered on our History of the Gotchaverse segment, Trial by Combat is basically when you need a get out of jail free card and can have someone represent you in a one on one combat. Bran and Theon also go through some more life lesson moments in the north, but the real big moment of this episode happens in Essos, with Daenerys consuming an entire horse heart in some weird Dothraki ritual before Viserys finally makes his move, much to his chagrin, threatening his sister in front of the entire khalasar, and is therefore executed via molten gold being poured on his head. With our first main character casualty of the series, we bid adieau to Viserys, who was played fantastically by Harry Lloyd in the five episodes he appeared in. Do you think that when Marvel Studios starts making its X-Men and mutant stories that it will attempt to retell the stories that Fox did poorly on, or do you expect them to attempt to take on largely untread stories? And since we now have a precedent of J. K. Simmons returning in an alternate universe equivalent as J. What's it like to finally start to make it in music? To wake up and find you've been played on radio stations around the world, you're making major playlists, and being invited to meetings with some of the biggest names in music? That's the reality for Harry Lloyd, frontman of up-and-coming band Waiting For Smith.   A revelation following a life changing accident caused Harry to re-evaluate his life and throw everything into doing what he loved and pursuing a career in music. A couple of years down the line, he's starting to make a name for himself with plays and appearances on the BBC, Xfm and elsewhere, slots at major festivals, showcases and meetings with major record labels.   Starling and Harry discuss what changed in the last two years to enable this success, what it's like to be starting to live the dream (including some harsh realities) and where to go from here.   Starling's World is a podcast about making it in the creative industries. Every two weeks, rising star Starling interviews a creative industry professional at the top of their game, from songwriters to film makers, producers, managers and agents, right up to major label execs. Creativity is a bitch: it creeps up on you in the bath, it’s not there when you plan for it and the path to success is as clear as trying to find your tent in a festival site. With no torch. Pop singer Starling has created a podcast interviewing top industry creatives including Bjork producer Damian Taylor, Former Head of Specialist Factual at C4 David Glover (he created Gogglebox), and many more.  The aim? To help people aspiring to make it in the creative industries by learning from the experts: What makes them tick, how they got to the top of one of the world's toughest industries, their mistakes, triumphs, and the moments that made them who they are.  Check out Waiting for Smith on Spotify. You'll be hearing them everywhere else very soon!

Archer season 10, or Archer: 1999 brings back the crew that once comprised a bumbling, privatized group of intelligence operatives named I.S.I.S., a concept which, for several reasons, has not aged well. So, in keeping with the show's recent seasons of new milieus each season, this go-round looks like a retro-futuristic, dystopian vision of the “future” of 1999, as imagined by 1970's sci-fi movies, and TV shows like Space: 1999. Here are the 2 trailers I'm playing on tonight's podcast: https://youtu.be/VNUdKOrC20w and: https://youtu.be/AgFC21vh__E Archer premieres tonight (May 29) at 10:00PM on FXX. Plus, father of the year Charles Xavier takes center stage in the latest trailer for the third and final season of Legion, and he's played by that guy from that show everyone used to love! Harry Lloyd has clearly not been affected by the poor reviews of the final season of Game of Thrones, as the former Viserys Targaryen plays Professor X, younger and still a complete disaster of a father. Seriously, who abandons their son in a psych ward so that they can talk Cyclops through puberty? Legion premieres June 24 on FX, and you can check out the trailer here https://youtu.be/-Emle81YZFQ Thanks for checking out tonight's episode - make sure to subscribe to the show, and to leave ratings and reviews! Sean answers your Marvel questions!0:30 Brett HeierWhat are your top three favorite marvel cinematic universe characters? What are your top three marvel comics characters? Also, have you seen sorry for your loss? It's Elisabeth Olsen's show and it's really good.3:03 Woo S! KimNo matter what the results are and what the fallout of “Avengers: End Game” the Marvel Cinematic Universe will be very different regardless of who lives and who dies.  Even without Fantastic Four and X-Men potentially coming home the MCU by the end of this year hopefully; the MCU isn't going to look the same nor is it going to feel the same as the universe that began in 2008. Lastly, I think coincidentally this is the best time for Marvel's First Family and Mutants to be introduced to further the point that the MCU that hardcore geeks and casual audiences knew after Thanos won't entirely remain, what say you, Sean?6:54 Woo S! KimI mentioned on an earlier Q&A a few weeks back how Marvel is reintroducing the Fantastic Four in a comics standpoint, could Marvel Television and or FOX quietly ending/wrapping up “The Gifted” and “Legion” just be both companies readying themselves for the merger because to be fair much like the Netflix series and the Hulu, they take place in the MCU but adjacently and from what I hear these FOX Marvel shows are kind the same when it comes to X-Men so whether the merger goes through or not creatively these FOX Marvel shows could conceivably go a couple more seasons, what are your thoughts Sean?9:20 Woo S! KimSean may you please take a moment and explain what the differences are between IMAX with laser and IMAX without laser?12:45 Mookie JohnsonIn your opinion, did the Avengers Superbowl trailer end with Cap grabbing his old shield, the new shield referenced in Homecoming, or a new shield forged in Wakanda since they have plenty of vibranium to remake his shield?14:40 Derek BeebeDid you see Glass, and if so, what did you think of it?  Particularly the third act.    (He said vaguely, to avoid spoiling anyone).14:48 Derek BeebeWhen the Disney/Fox deal is finally a done deal, will you and Paul grace us with an episode about Fant-Four-Stick?16:53 Derek BeebeWhat did you think the FOX TV movies of Generation X (1996) and Nick Fury (1998)? 17:27 Derek BeebeAre you watching The Gifted?  I'm afraid it never grabbed me and I dropped it after the first season.18:05 Robert ReinekeSean, would you care to play Vegas oddsmaker? Please provide a percentage chance of winning for the following Oscar contenders. Avengers: Infinity War to win Best Visual Effects. Black Panther to win Best Production Design. Black Panther to win Best Sound Editing. Black Panther to win Best Sound Mixing. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse to win Best Animated Feature. Black Panther to win Best Original Score. All the Stars from Black Panther to win Best Original Score. Black Panther to win Best Costume Design. And, Black Panther to win Best Picture.32:07 Alex WardThis is a tricky one, but aside from what we've already seen, what are five moments you think are most likely to happen in Endgame? Professor Hulk, Cap dying, etc. (And feel free to tiptoe around things you're more knowledgeable about due to leaks)38:54 Alex WardAre you a fan of Yorgos Lanthimos at all? If so, do you think there's any place for him in the MCU? Maybe a super awkward Fantastic Four movie?39:22 AlexWhat do you think of  the recent casting of Harry Lloyd as Charles Xavier for the last season of Legion? Do  you think its kind of strange to have two  live-action versions of the same iconic  character for television and film existing concurrently with each  other? Last time  I can recall this being a thing was the case with Smallvile and Superman Returns where Brandon Routh was playing the Last Son Of Krypton on film at the same time Tom Welling was playing a different version on television.  Its kind of odd to  me. especially considering both the third season of Legion and Dark Phoenix come out this year in June. prior to this news, I was under the  impression there was an X -embargo(similar to the Bat-embargo) which prohibited the use of A-list X-men characters like Wolverine for the television show but now with the casting of the third live-action Professor X before even the MCU has had the chance to  touch the character I wonder what happened behind-the-scenes.41:12 Nolan WildeHi Sean. I'd been considering this and the TV spot may have confirmed it but I'm not sure the World knows the whole story of the snap. The events of Infinity War happened very quickly and it didn't seem the Avengers informed anyone what was happening.Do you think there will be consequences as this is partly why the Sokovia accords were brought in and if the World finds out that the Avengers chose to act alone maybe it's possible they have been outcast?44:22 Mookie JohnsonIf the Doctor Strange movie with Nightmare does well, do you think that creates an opportunity for Blade to return to the big screen?45:11 David RosenHey Sean and Friends, hope all is well! Do you think that End Game will set up any of the Disney+ limited series? Do you think the movie will make it clear that some of the characters' stories will continue on? Also on the subject of the limited series, I believe I read just today (Tuesday) that Chris Evans might be getting a chance to sit in the director's chair for one or several limited series episodes. My first guess was that it would most likely be for the Sam and Bucky series. Perhaps maybe this is what was meant by one of the Russo bros when he “We haven't seen the last of Chris Evans.” What do you think about this news/rumor and what do you director Chris Evans could bring to an episode of the “Sam and Bucky Show” that maybe other directors couldn't?48:23 David RosenHey Sean, You did a great job with the shot by shot breakdown of the End Game superbowl spot! You talked a lot about the imagine, but didn't really say anything about the voiceover from Cap. What does his line, “Some people move on. But not us.” tell you about his/the team's mentality in this movie? What do you think “moving on” is referring to? The fact that hat they lost the battle with Thanos? That their loved ones are gone? That they're in a “new world”? Something else? Do you see this line as proof that the Avengers are likely going to be the aggressors in this movie?50:48 David RosenI think I had a little bit of a different interpretation about the shot of Liberty Island and all the boats around it, than I think you did. What I gathered was that with half the population (and perhaps more from collateral damage) gone, society in New York likely broke down and is in a state of anarchy and chaos and a number of people decided to “move” to Liberty Island and take refuge there, away from some of the chaos that might be occurring in the city. What do you think about this? Is that shot meant to suggest more than just what we are shown, that perhaps society is in a state of complete disarray, or just that a large number of boats, without captains, managed to float and get stuck at the island?53:02 Jeremy EdenA couple Christmases ago, my brother got me a copy of Batman/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which I really enjoyed.  It was a fun mashup of two universes I've always loved.  We've seen some other strange universe crossovers in comic books before (JLA/Power Rangers, X-Men/Star Trek, DC/Looney Tunes, etc.)  Apart from a straight up MCU/DC crossover, which bizarre universe mashup (either real or one you make up) would you like to see make its way into the MCU, keeping in mind that nobody is REALLY asking for these to happen?54:38 David RosenSo I realized after rewatching the first End Game trailer that the Avengers compound seems to be lying right flush on a large body of water. As far as I know, aside from maybe a few lakes and the Hudson River, upstate New York doesn't really have any large bodies of water. I went back to watch the “training” scene in Antman, where they show the overhead exterior shot of the compound, and it didn't seem like the compound was sitting on any large body of water, and actually also looked entirely different from the one in the End Game trailer. I know that sometimes designs change between movies, but this seemed like a pretty big change. Ever since the first trailer premiered, one of the thoughts I had regarding Scott was that after getting out of the quantum realm, being in San Francisco, he would have had to then make a cross country drive in his van to the Avengers compound, perhaps even knot fully knowing where it is. But a west coast compound that is public knowledge might alleviate this problem. Do you think this might actually be a different Avengers compound that we're being shown in the trailer, perhaps one on the West Coast, setting up a West Coast Avengers?57:33 Seth GoslinSean, with the upcoming Black Widow film taking place before Avengers, would you like it to take place before she joined SHIELD or after? Would you prefer it to expand on an event previously referenced like Budapest or when Clint spared her or her encounter with the Winter Soldier, or would you like it to be outside of any previous references?59:37 David RosenHey Sean, I just saw the article you posted about the failed pilot order for a Marvel Television all female TV series.   This was the first I heard about this, but did you hear about this previously? Do you think this was the attempt at doing something with an all female cast that we've kept hearing and speculating about? If not, what do you think this non-order means, if anything, for future prospects of getting any kind of all female production?1:03:24 AlexIn addition to confirming once again that subsequent Deadpool films will retain the R-rating Bob Iger pointed out that other Disney  films may potentially  carry the R-rating in the future.  This tidbit of information got my little noggin thinking: do you think Marvel will eventually do a R-rated film besides The-Merc-With-The-Mouth or do you think they'll only strictly do PG-13 films with Deadpool being the lone exception to the rule? And keep up the good work,  man. You're doing a darn fine job.1:09:19 Michael Louis WeaselboyHey Sean I was just wondering who do you think will be the villain for Spiderman 3? And when do you think it will be released?1:12:18 AlexWe know that Star Wars exists in the MCU as a fictional property within the universe but how does nobody ever point out Nick Fury's uncanny resemblance to Mace Windu— who like Fury is played by Samuel motherf'ing Jackson? Does that mean only the original trilogy and sequel trilogy exist and the prequels never got made in the MCU  or do you think like our world the Star Wars prequels do in fact exist and maybe Mace Windu is just played by a different actor in the MCU?  Forgive me if you've received this type of question before but it just dawned on me.1:14:03 Daniel DavilaHey Sean I know I'm right on the deadline for this so I'll keep it short and sweet.  Do you think the living tribunal, eternity, galactus, etc. can be major players in the mcu?  Do you think they translate well to the big screen?  Love your show thanks again!1:15:53 Brian WhiteHi Sean. I would like you to expand your thoughts and comments on the idea of a Young Avengers or Champions movie. As any of us long time comic readers know, the movies have taken their liberties even while giving homage to the original material and this has mostly been successful. But so far we've seen titles and characters that came from the comics even if they were presented uniquely. Your comments about how MCU Peter Parker and Shuri can form the Young Avengers or Champions , both being characters that have never been part of either suggests to me that the MCU can create original characters and teams. In Iron Man 3, Tony gifted his sidekick Harley Keener with a lot of tech. He could show up in his own version of Iron Man armor and join up too - maybe he's the Sam Alexander you've been foreseeing. Do you foresee the MCU originating characters? No doubt the comics will copy them if it does. Thanks!1:18:39 ChristofferCan you recommend some books about Marvel – the MCU in particular – and comic book history in general?1:20:18 AlexAvengers: Endgame spoiler question See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

The Geektown Radio podcast returns for our penultimate show before the Christmas break, and I'm joined by the dread pirate Bex Trista from TristaBytes, who is currently recovering from being a klutz and smashing up her knee... Something which I was, of course, completely sympathetic about... Along with all the usual tv news and air date info, we also have an interview with Olivia Williams, Harry Lloyd & Nicholas Pinnock, three of the stars of StarzPlay's brilliant sci-fi thriller 'Counterpart'.If you haven’t caught the spy thriller yet, it stars J.K. Simmons (J. Jonah Jameson in ‘Spider-man’, and Commissioner Gordon for the DCU), as Howard Silk, a low-level bureaucrat at a seemingly innocuous UN agency, the Office of Interchange or OI. He’s trudging through his latter years of a life filled with regret, that is until he discovers the agency is hiding a secret… It’s protecting a gateway to a parallel universe.Olivia Williams ('Dollhouse', 'The Sixth Sense') plays Emily Silk/Burton, wife (and, confusingly, ex-wife) of Howard Silk, who is way more involved in the spy games than she initially seems. Harry Lloyd (Viserys Targaryen in 'Game Of Thrones') stars as Peter Quayle, the Alpha (aka “our side”) OI Director of Strategy. Nicholas Pinnock ('Fortitude', 'Marcella') portrays Ian Shaw, an aggressive OI Housekeeping operative on the Prime side (aka “the other side”), and former boyfriend of the Prime Emily. WARNING THERE ARE SPOILERS FOR SEASON 1 IN THE INTERVIEW!‘Counterpart‘ Season 1 and the first eps of Season 2 are on Amazon Prime Channel STARZPlay right now, with new episodes landing every Sunday. For those of you confused as to what is StarzPlay, it is an addition “add-on” channel you can get via Amazon Prime Video. This additional service to the main Amazon Prime Video offering costs £4.99 a month with a 7-day free trial. They also are home to the Stephen King multiverse drama ‘Castle Rock‘, the Brendan Gleeson/Harry Treadaway series ‘Mr. Mercedes‘, and upcoming apocalyptic stoner comedy ‘Now Apocalypse’ plus lots more. Also On This Week's Show:I'm joined by Bex Trista from TristaBytes in the co-host seat this week, so we chat about the tv shows, games and films we've been playing and watching. We take a look at all the latest tv & film news, including renewals & cancellations. We give you our recommendations for upcoming TV in the next 7 days. Sam talks to Glenn Close and director Björn Runge about her new film The Wife. Joan Castleman (Glenn Close) has spent forty years sacrificing her own talent, dreams and ambitions to support her charismatic husband Joe (Jonathan Pryce) and his stellar literary career. Ignoring infidelities and excuses made in the cause of his art, she has put up with his behaviour with undiminished grace and humour. The foundations of their marriage have, however, been built upon a set of uneven compromises and Joan has reached a turning point. On the eve of Joe’s Nobel Prize for Literature, the crown jewel rewarding a spectacular body of work, Joan will confront the biggest sacrifice of her life and some long-buried secrets. Based on the bestselling book by Meg Wolitzer, The Wife is a poignant, funny and emotional journey, a celebration of womanhood, self-discovery and liberation, featuring a stunning cast that also includes Max Irons, Harry Lloyd, Annie Starke, Elizabeth McGovern and Christian Slater.
