There are some shows that will go down in TV history as setting the bar for a specific genre. And when those shows have ensemble casts, it pretty much raises the status of every actor on the screen. When it comes to cop shows that viewers and critics collectively have loved, one specific police drama and its characters from the 1990's and beyond stands out. This is Still Here Hollywood. Geoffrey Blake is an Emmy nominated, two-time SAG Award winning actor best known for his role as 'Wesley' (the abusive radical boyfriend) opposite Robin Wright's 'Jennie' in the iconic Academy Award Best Picture Forrest Gump. In addition to that film, he has appeared alongside Academy Award Winner Tom Hanks in multiple films. Those performances are part of his frequent collaborations with such Academy Award winning filmmakers as Robert Zemeckis and Ron Howard (Forrest Gump, Contact, Cast Away, Appollo 13, EDtv, and Frost/Nixon.) His most critically acclaimed performance was that of the preppy pipe-smoking astrophysicist 'Fisher', the right-hand man, in the Sci-Fi classic Contact opposite Academy Award winner Jodie Foster. Blake has well over 100 credits to his name in both television and film. In the 1980's and early 1990's, he frequently collaborated with friend and colleague, Emilio Estevez. The two met on the generation defining film Young Guns where he portrayed 'McCloskey', the Young Gun snitch, opposite Estevez, Charlie Sheen, Kiefer Sutherland, Lou Diamond Phillips, and Dermot Mulroney. He would go on to make four more films with Estevez as both an actor and director (Men at Work, Rated X, The War at Home, Nightbreaker). He also worked with other luminary filmmakers such as Ridley & Tony Scott (The Man in the High Castle, Enemy of the State), Paul Mazursky (The Pickle), Frank Darabont (Mob City), Barry Levinson (Wag the Dog), Roland Joffe (Texas Rising) and numerous others. In addition, he has appeared in a multitude of Emmy Award winning series, mini-series, and movies for television with prolific content providers such as Steven Bochco, David Milch, Jerry Bruckheimer, Shonda Rhimes, David Shore, Paul Attanosio, Don Bellisario, and Dick Wolf, repeatedly reaching out to Blake to be on their shows.

Tread Perilously's summer grab bag continues by finally returning to Cop Rock for its second episode, "Ill-Gotten Gaines." Episode 446."The Shawshank Redemption"Actor: Don McManus.Don and I talk Seinfeld (Duncan Meyer), Dexter, The Shawshank Redemption, Vice and his most recent film Joker: Folie à Deux.A veteran character actor on some of TV's most quirky series, Don McManus got his first recurring role playing Erick Reese Hillman, the first gay character to marry his boyfriend on television, on the critically acclaimed CBS dramedy "Northern Exposure." Next up for McManus was a change of pace, playing dynamic manager Lee Michaelson in Steven Bochco's searing courtroom drama "Murder One" and a recurring role as a recovering alcoholic on the gripping family drama "Party of Five." McManus continued to work steadily, with guest roles in such high-profile series as the political drama "The West Wing," the crime series "Cold Case," and the refreshingly original sitcom "Malcolm in the Middle." His next big recurring role was as Assistant District Attorney John Lennox on David E. Kelley's off-kilter law series "Boston Legal," where he appeared as an attorney who battles Crane, Poole, & Schmidt. In between his busy television schedule, McManus also found the time to appear in several films, including the critically acclaimed prison drama "The Shawshank Redemption," Paul Thomas Anderson's absurdist "Punch-Drunk Love," and the big-budget Nicolas Cage adventure "National Treasure."Welcome, Don McManus.https://linktr.ee/mondaymorningcritic#theshawshankredemption #seinfeld #vice #dexter #podcast #fyp #interview #shortsThe Sitcom StudyWelcome to the Sitcom Study, where we contemplate the TV shows we grew up with and...Listen on: Apple Podcasts Spotify
This week on It Was a Thing on TV we reach a milestone with our 450th episode! First for Episode 449, in an era where game shows were goofy, outrageous, and random, this game show was the goofiest, most outrageous, and the most random. The Cheap Show was ridiculous, messy, and...well...cheap. Sorry for the short episode. There isn't much multimedia out there, nor is there much information about it. Then for Episode 450, Steven Bochco, the genius behind hit shows including Hill Street Blues, L.A. Law, and Doogie Howser, created Cop Rock, which was labeled as being revolutionary and potentially changing the landscape of television. Despite tons of promotion, the show ran 3 months and has been deemed one of the biggest failures in television history. Not only do we cover the series as always, but we will feature one song from each episode. “They said I could do whatever I want. So I thought, I'll write a boy-girl detective show that kills this stupid genre.” – Glenn Gordon Caron, creator of MoonlightingSome walk by night, some fly by day… Susan and Sharon cross paths with legendary writer, director, producer and creator of the classic 80's series Moonlighting for a rollicking conversation about David, Maddie, Ms. DiPesto – and everything in between!Moonlighting ran from 1985-1989. It starred Cybill Shepherd and a then-unknown Bruce Willis and would become a landmark classic of 80s television. Tasked with making “one of those boy-girl detective shows” Caron agreed on the condition that he could do whatever he wanted. What he – and as it turns out, we – wanted, was Moonlighting. Glenn Gordon Caron has been a force in television for over four decades, since his first job on Taxi – followed by a stint on Remington Steele -- before going on to create the seminal 80s romantic comedy/detective series Moonlighting. Caron later went on to create the long-running Patricia Arquette show, Medium. Moonlighting is now streaming on Hulu.THE CONVERSATION300 SONGS in 66 episodes – the MANY hurdles of getting the music rights for Moonlighting for the Hulu broadcasts.Glenn's first pilot turned out to be for a little actor named… James Stewart.Steven Bochco asked Glenn to come work on his new show, then called Hill Street Station: “I said no – this is never gonna go.”On the crazy tone of Moonlighting: “I'm showing the episodes to my youngest child, who's fourteen. He's come to believe that I'm mentally ill.”Cybill Shepherd signed on to Moonlighting -- after reading only half the pilot! On casting the role of David Addison: “I brought Bruce Willis in to audition eleven times. They rejected him ten times.”The role of David Addison's brother was originally written for… David Lee Roth?!GETTING PAST THE CENSORS: ABC censors wouldn't allow David & Maddie to say “frig”. But “fig”? Um, Okay.On being a maverick: “I was young and arrogant and didn't care about my reputation. I would live to regret that.”So, join Susan and Sharon – and Glenn – as they talk Aaron Spelling, Pierce Brosnan, Peter Peter Bogdanovich, 100-page scripts, directing Orson Wells – and getting kicked by nuns!AUDIOGRAPHY Watch Moonlighting on Hulu.Check out the Moonlighting fan website, DavidandMaddie.com Susan's new play Confidence (and the Speech) has just been published! I do an epic summary of ballsy TV writer David Milch, the late great Emmy-winning creator Steven Bochco & how their many TV shows pushed uncomfortable situations, crafted emotional conversations & provided riveting narratives! Their credits include: Doogie Howser MD and Hill Street Blues to NYPD Blue and Deadwood to Luck and Murder in the First. A big part of the programming line of NBC, TNT, ABC & HBO TV show franchises, I dig into what makes those shows still stand the test of time. Welcome to AYK season 3! We're kicking off with a miniseries of shows that lasted one season or less, starting with one of the most baffling ideas of all time: Cop Rock. It's a completely earnest musical police procedural from Steven Bochco with music by none other than Randy Newman. We can't believe it failed!

Let's discuss Mr. Steven Bochco. For some of you this will be a review. For others, an education in television awesomeness. This guy gave us Hill Street Blues, Doogie Howser MD, L.A. Law, and NYPD Blue among others. He also wrote 7 episodes of a little known detective series starring Peter Falk. Steven Bochco is a man amongst men. I shall discuss his life and work. I shall also touch on such topics as the chimpanzee on The Today Show, laughing at Tourette Syndrome, and David Caruso's naked ass. You'll "crack" up. Get it? Crack. Because of the David Caruso ass comment? Anyway, enjoy the episode.
Mega-TV producer and showrunner David E. Kelley's numerous cult dramas, dark comedies and crime mysteries include: L.A. Law, From the Hip, Chicago Hope, Doogie Howser, To Gillian on Her 37th Birthday, Picket Fences, The Practice, Ally McBeal, Snoops, Mystery Alaska, Lake Placid, Boston Public, Boston Legal, Harry's Law, Monday Mornings, The Crazy Ones, Goliath, Stephen King's Mr. Mercedes, Goliath, Big Little Lies, Hulu's Nine Perfect Strangers, The Undoing, Big Sky, The Lincoln Lawyer, Big Shots and Anatomy of a Scandal. He currently as of the recording was attached to helm the upcoming Peacock's The Calling, Love and Death and a new interpretation of Scott Turow's Presumed Innocent for Apple TV+! Was he basically Steven Bochco 2.0 or did he evolve into his new formula? What cancelled show needed another year on the air? Why is he so good at blending legal tropes with witty dark off-color comedy? And more admiration of this TV producing legend. Dr. Klapper starts to lay out his theme of today's show which is the support teams behind individual award achievements. The example he uses today for television is one of his favorite shows of all time "Columbo". In sports we take a look at Kevin Durant and his MVP speech about how his mom is actually the real MVP. He also thanks teammates that helped him achieve the award. Andrew and Vieves look at ads that rely on the easily-understood trope of the sports team clubhouse. From the pep-talking coach to the post-game interview, these ad wizards use every part of the locker room. Plus, it takes a village to operate a turkeysaurus, and Steven Bochco gets scatalogical.

The Wrecks of '79 concludes with another case of "That Same Old Story"...no, seriously, stories about people swapping bodies has been done hundreds of times in just as many years. The fact that the story was once a mediocre sitcom is as much predictable as it is unfortunate. SPONSORED BY: Dave's Archives Retrocirq And our Patrons

Dennis connects via Zoom with actor-writer-performance artist John Fleck whose musical satire It's Alive, It's ALIVE! is showing at the Odyssey Theatre in Los Angeles through March 20. John talks about the show's central idea; that COVID is here to save us, not hurt us, where the original idea came from and where he got the inflatable COVID headress he wears through much of the show. He also recalls his experience, along with Tim Miller, Karen Finley, Tim Miller and Holly Hughes, as one of the NEA Four, the four artists who had received grants from the National Endowment of the Arts and whose grants were challenged by conservatives like Jesse Helms and others and whose case went all the way to Supreme Court. He talks about how the notoriety led to his first TV job, as a gay secretary in Steven Bochco's Murder One and how he regrets not being present at the Supreme Court hearing because he was working on TV show. John also recalls his early days in Los Angeles in the 1970's, the "radical change" he made that brought him here and opening for Edith Massey, John Waters' Egg Lady, at the One Way punk bar in Silverlake in 1983. Other topics include: embracing imperfection, how having his own shows makes the Hollywood acting hustle less soul-crushing, being an "age pioneer" at 71, the torture and glory of doing alien makeup for multiple Star Trek series and most recently Orville, appearing on projects like Tales of the City, Weeds, Seinfeld, Waterworld and the upcoming Tina Town, vamping in the dark when the power went out during a performance, and the late, great screenwriter who always came to his shows.

Thus we are going in on L.A. Law's "Good To The Last Drop" with guest Adam Grosswirth, who originally watched it as a pre-teen and...learned a lot about hysterectomies and their possible side effects? Around The Dial takes us through Insecure, Queens, The Big Leap, The Good Wife, and The Good Fight. Adam makes the case for Max Headroom's series premiere, "Blipverts," to be inducted into The Canon. Welcome to the The Pilot Project, a show that will take on the never aired, lost, and unloved pilots of TV shows that never were or didn't make it. In every full episode we'll break down one pilot and tell you how it came to be and how it all fell apart. Then, in the mini episodes we'll talk about the stuff that stuck with us since we watched the last pilot and talk about what's coming next.In this first episode, we talk about the show's concept and discuss our first breakdown on the next episode: 1990's Cop Rock. To watch the Cop Rock pilot, you can watch it on YouTube for free here.About Cop RockIn 1987, ABC gave Steven Bochco (Hillstreet Blues, Doogie Howser) a 10-episode deal because he could do no wrong. But it turns out he could. After a failed attempt to turn Hillstreet into a Broadway musical, we got Cop Rock: a hybrid police drama and wacky musical that is somehow neither. The show ran for 11 episodes before being canceled.Contact Us!Email: pilotprojectpod@gmail.comInstagram: @pilotprojectpodFacebook: http://fb.me/pilotprojectpodTwitter: @pilotprojectpodVoicemail: (469) 665-9827Subscribe for Free!Apple Podcasts: (coming soon)Google Play: (coming soon)RSS: http://feeds.feedburner.com/pilotprojectpodSpotify: (coming soon)TuneIn: (coming soon) ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★
