Hugh Wilson talked his way into a job at MTM Enterprises at just the right time. When he arrived in the early '70s, they were busy making sitcom history with The Mary Tyler Moore Show and The Bob Newhart Show. Wilson, who had no prior TV experience, could often be found up in the rafters, taking a crash course in Funny 101.The result was his first series as a creator and executive producer, WKRP in Cincinnati (1978-82).In this "From the Vault" conversation from 2014, Wilson -- who passed away in 2018 at 74 -- talks about what it was like to strike gold with just the right cast at just the right time -- even if his rock 'n' roll radio station sitcom was never a big hit in the States.Among the surprising things he reveals:"When the show first went on, it was struggling in the ratings in the U.S. But the ratings in Canada were great right from the beginning," says Wilson, who used the Canadian response to successfully argue that the series needed time to find its audience. "I've never understood that but I've always been super grateful for it."
No-plant regeneration is a method that let's nature lead the way, and its seen landscapes transform from a scrubby paddock to a lush native paradise. Famously pioneered by Hugh Wilson in Akaroa's Hinewai Reserve, the practice is bearing fruit in Wellington's Long Gully Bush Reserve. Otari-Wilton Bush manager Tim Park speaks to Emile about the benefits of playing the long game.

Blast from the Past was 75th highest-grossing movie of 1999, opening at #4 at the box office on Valentine's Day weekend and going on to take in $40 million worldwide on a $35 million budget. The first of two 1999 collaborations between director Hugh Wilson and star Brendan Fraser, Blast from the Past included a stellar supporting cast, including Alicia Silverstone, Christopher Walken, Sissy Spacek, Dave Foley, Nathan Fillion, Joey Slotnick, and the legendary Jennifer Lewis. Critics were pretty even split on it - partly because it was inevitably compared to 1998's Pleasantville - and none were especially effusive in their praise, but it went on to find a charmed audience on home video and has emerged as the quintessential "hidden gem" in the years since. One if its fans is actor Samm Levine, who graced the small screen in 1999 in the beloved (and prematurely canceled) television series Freaks and Geeks. He joined John and Jenn to talk Walken, swing dance, and his most famous creation, the beloved character Zoot Suit Ryan.
This week on It Was a Thing on TV First, in Episode 459, Hugh Wilson and Loni Anderson worked together on a popular series in the late 70s and early 80s, WKRP in Cincinnati. They tried to parlay that magic into another series four years after WKRP's end, one where a former showgirl, played by Anderson, married her wealthy husband, who died. When you're battling family members who want that money, life isn't so easy on Easy Street. Then in Episode 460, the annual Lost in Translation episodes start with another British adaptation of a beloved American sitcom. Despite American scripts being localized for a UK audience, Days Like These didn't click. Maybe it needed a catchy phrase in its opening like "Hello Luton!" Shouldn't Christopher Walken's character be brought up on charges? How has Brendan Fraser's character not grown into a big, hulking baby psycho? Why do Fraser and Dave Foley both have terribly dyed jet-black hair in this movie? And could we just get a weird little movie about Joey Slotnick's dive bar? PLUS: The return of the VHS Trailer Game! Willkommen zum Fleckenhörer am 11. Dezember 2023! All Bones Considered: Laurel Hill Stories #053 - Suited to a Tee, part 2 Hugh Wilson was one of six golf architects called "The Philadelphia School". He designed the classic Merion East Course, as well as the final four holes at Pine Valley.
Philadelphia has been an epicenter for golf since the 1890s. There are dozens of golf courses within an easy drive of the city, and a few in the city itself. Ida Dixon is today recognized as the first woman golf course architect in the United States. Hugh Wilson and Charles Thomas were two of the six architects who made up what is called The Philadelphia School. The two of them helped build 4 of the top ranked courses in the country. Charles Baily met his final destiny on the 4th green of Merion East Cricket Club. Plus, you'll learn about cleeks and condors, heroic holes and featheries, Randolph Scott, Mary Queen of Scots, and a golf hole called the “Mae West.” Even if you're not a golfer, there are things for you to learn on today's All Bones Considered: Laurel Hill Stories – Suited to a Tee: Golf Course Pioneers.
Join hosts Brad Garoon and Jake Ziegler as they transport you back to the year 1999. First up, Jake introduces Brad to "The Insider," a gripping drama directed by Michael Mann. Set in the intense world of big tobacco and journalism, the film unravels the true story of a whistleblower and his fight for truth and justice. Brad and Jake delve into the riveting performances and the film's exploration of ethical dilemmas. Next is "Blast from the Past," a delightful romantic comedy directed by Hugh Wilson. Brad assigns this charming film to Jake, who explores the quirky tale of a man raised in a fallout shelter and his adventure into the unknown world above. Together, they revel in the film's endearing humor, themes of isolation, and the power of love amidst societal differences. "Never Did It" is a podcast that uncovers forgotten gems and cinematic treasures from years gone by. With their infectious enthusiasm and genuine curiosity, Brad and Jake invite listeners to join them on their quest to explore the untapped potential of cinema and bridge the gap in their own movie-watching histories.

On today's episode, we're coming out of our fallout shelter with our baseball cards, heading over to the hardware store (and the liquor store), and booking a room at the Holiday Inn while we revisit the often-overlooked romantic comedy, Blast From The Past (1999). This movie was directed by Hugh Wilson and written by Hugh Wilson and Bill Kelly. This movie stars Brendan Fraser (The Mummy, George Of The Jungle), Alicia Silverstone (The Crush, Clueless), Christopher Walken (Annie Hall, Catch Me If You Can), Sissy Spacek (Carrie, Coal Miner's Daughter), and Dave Foley (A Bug's Life, Dick). This is a gem of a film, and if you're at all a fan of Brendan Fraser or Alicia Silverstone, this is a movie to watch, for sure. It has heart, some light social commentary, and is overall a good watch.Intro/Outro Music: "Phantom Fun" by Jonathan BoyleShow E-Mail: cultcinemacircle@gmail.com Follow Cult Cinema Circle on Instagram, Twitter, and Letterboxd Hosted on Acast. "WKRP in Cincinnati" premiered this week in 1978 on CBS-TV, airing for four seasons and 90 episodes. My late friend Terry Moore sat down with Gordon and his wife Anna in 1981 for this CKNW interview. The show, created by Hugh Wilson, featured the staff of a struggling radio station and was based on his experiences in sales at WQXI/Atlanta. New program director Andy Travis switches WKRP's format from easy-listening music to rock with help from deejays Dr. Johnny Fever and Venus Flytrap, station manager Arthur Carlson, sales manager Herb Tarlek, news director Les Nessman, receptionist Jennifer Marlowe and producer Bailey Quarters. Gordon reflects on his broadcast background and the inspiration for his character; the strengths of the show's cast; the advantages of syndication; he and Anna discuss how success has changed their lives; the truth behind Hollywood's "Tinseltown" myth; the importance of good management; and how they spend their free time. Arthur "Big Guy" Carlson was Gordon's signature role, and he starred in a short-lived revival of the show, "The New WKRP in Cincinnati" which ran in syndication from 1991 to 1993. He also appeared in the final season of Seinfeld, in which he played George Costanza's boss at a playground equipment company. You probably also remember when he took over the Maytag repairman role from Jesse White. Gordon Jump died at his home in Glendale, CA on September 22, 2003. He was 71.

At 15, he left school to pursue a trade as a cabinet maker. But he still retained his passion for guitar by playing with local cover bands. At the age of 20, Michael decided to give up his trade to pursue his dream of becoming a full-time guitarist. An opportunity arose in 1991 when local singer songwriter Hugh Wilson appeared on the popular television show ‘Starsearch' and won the series. Hugh and manager Glenn Wheatley approached Michael to join him in his band. This led to an amazing nine months of recording of three singles, an album, recording film clips and extensive touring. Over the next 30 years, Michael further established himself with a solid career as a session guitarist by playing and recording for many Top 10 National and International artists. His playing credits today include the TV show The Voice (Australia), Delta Goodrem, Keith Urban, Lionel Richie, Seal, Roachford, Mica Paris and more. "WKRP in Cincinnati" was the product of show creator Hugh Wilson wanting to make a sitcom about his experiences working at an Atlanta radio station. This show, which originally aired on CBS features a strong ensemble cast with the likes of Howard Hesseman, Loni Anderson, & Tim Reid just to name a few. Will WKRP's top 40 Rock n' Roll free the S1E1 guy's souls? Find out as they review the 1978 episode, "Pilot: Part 1".
WELCOME BACK!!Jennifer is out on the town enjoying a posh meal at an upscale and trendy Cincinnati hotspot. Her companion is...elderly. Let's not kid ourselves...he's old! This is the Colonel. He seems to have held a special spot in Jennifer's life for a while now. Actually, if Steve Marshall and Hugh Wilson had gotten their way, he'd have been MARRIED to Jennifer right now. Dinner doesn't go well. The Colonel expires minutes before paying the whopper of a check. Is Jennifer a conniving gold digger? Or just a young lady in love with an older gentleman? Either way, she's Executrix of the Industrialist's estate. Meeting the family is a treat. Seeing the old man on video in the lawyer's office...even MORE of a treat!!We've got guest stars galore, a new lobby and a seminar from Andy on how NOT to comfort your friends. This week Val and Rachel discuss two radio workplace sitcoms from different eras: Newsradio and WKRP in Cincinnati. NewsRadio is an American sitcom television series that aired on NBC from March 21, 1995 to May 4, 1999, focusing on the work lives of the staff of a New York City AM news radio station. It had an ensemble cast featuring Dave Foley, Stephen Root, Andy Dick, Maura Tierney, Vicki Lewis, Joe Rogan, Khandi Alexander, Jon Lovitz, and Phil Hartman in his final regular role before his death in 1998. WKRP in Cincinnati is an American sitcom television series that features the misadventures of the staff of a struggling fictional radio station in Cincinnati, Ohio. The show was created by Hugh Wilson and was based upon his experiences working in advertising sales at Top 40 radio station WQXI in Atlanta. Many of the characters and even some of the stories (including that of the Season 1 episode "Turkeys Away") are based on people and events at WQXI. Wilson once told The Cincinnati Enquirer that he selected WKRP as the call sign to stand for C-R-A-P. Hot Topics include: 1.) Gardening & landscaping updates 2.) Time slot shenanigans 3.) Contemporary criticism of Newsradio 4.) The final haunted season after Phil Hartman's death 5.) The kookiest co-workers we've ever had 6.) Bailey and Jennifer: The Ginger and Mary Ann of the 70s 7.) The WKRP very special concert episode 8.) Adjacent TV, MAD Magazine, The Most 90s 9.) Cute v. pretty, Katherine with a K 10.) Radio DJ Quiz!!! 11.) A SPECIAL INTERVIEW!! Hey there, Fellow Babies! If you're a fan of WKRP at all (and if you're listening to this podcast, we're guessing you are) you've probably seen the name "Max Tash" in the credits. It's the first name listed over the nighttime city shots when the "Went to a Bartender" closing theme begins. Picturing it in your head? Max was working for WKRP from before the beginning. He was an MTM "runner/gopher" on the production while casting was happening. He was production associate in the first season, Associate Producer in Seasons 2 and 3, then Coordinating Producer in the 4th Season. He was there for all 88 episodes...all the way through to "Up and Down the Dial." Only Hugh Wilson has his name in the credits of WKRP more times than Max Tash. Max was kept pretty busy with production duties, but during his tenure with WKRP, he did write a single episode. Max came up with the much-loved "Clean Up Radio Everywhere" episode featuring Dr. Bob Halyer (Hallier? Halyers?), the Jerry Falwell-like preacher who is ready to clean up Cincinnati radio.Max has been a friend of the podcast since our first few weeks. Via e-mail, he's supplied us with some great details as we've been working our way through the episodes. Max was happy to answer e-mail questions but, although we've asked a few times, Max has never agreed to speak with us for an interview. When we told him we just HAD to have his comments about "CURE" he said, "oh, okay."So get ready fellow babies...Heeeeere's Max! We talked to Max for more than an hour...and barely scratched the surface of the millions of stories he has tucked away. He is a wealth of knowledge about the show, about Hugh Wilson...about everything WKRP! We hope we can talk Max into another session with us at the end of the series. Either way, here is the incredible Max Tash, with information about "CURE", "The Famous Teddy Z", "Frank's Place", The Pussy Cat Theater (!) and a WHOLE lot more. The WKRP-Cast is headed to Cincinnati!!We've been wanting to go for a long time, but schedules just have not allowed it. We are finally able to visit the Queen City and we're doing it during one of the most incredible weeks of Cinci's year! We'll be there from March 29th through April 3rd of 2022. Opening Day is March 31st AND WE'VE GOT TICKETS!! (if, of course, there's baseball...)If you'd like to join us, check our FB Page for Event Details.

God loves to write narratives like the stories of Joseph, and Daniel, and Esther in which his people are powerless and oppressed, but also in which he takes the power from those who have it and gives it to his helpless, oppressed people in order that they might serve and love their enemies, growing God's kingdom. WELCOME BACK!!We meet WKRP's cleaning lady, Cora...and she's got a problem. Her "little boy" Arnold just isn't all that into school. He's 16 and finding more success on the streets than in the classroom. Cora has turned to Venus Flytrap for his advice and help. Could he maybe have a talk with young Arnold?Young Arnold turns out to be a middle-aged man...but we'll have to overlook that for the story. He's just as big, tricky and mean as his mama said. He also does NOT understand chemistry. Venus bets Arnold he can get Arnold to understand the atom in two minutes. What happens next is one of the most amazing chemistry lessons ever aired on a sitcom. It won a Humanitas Award for script writer Hugh Wilson. It's also a pretty darn good piece of visual learning and metaphor. Push "play" and join us in the storeroom as Professor Venus takes center stage. We're about to learn all about the atom and, if there's time...we'll do a little something on magnets. WATCH ALONG DETAILS...[Want to watch along with us? It's a blast!! WELCOME BACK TO ANOTHER EDITION OF THE "REAL FAMILIES" PODCAST!Hold on!! Don't go anywhere! It's a joke...it's an allegory...it's an incredibly inventive way to tell a story! It's P.J. Torokvei being given a greenlight by Hugh Wilson to do one of the most incredible half hours of late 20th Century Television ever made. Or not..."Real Families" could be hanging in a museum somewhere, endlessly debated by those who value and appreciate the formative capacity of television on society. Is this brilliant commentary? A weird focus on an unlikable character? Shrill satire? A little of Column A...? This is truly the template for the cringy and hilarious documentary style perfected by "The Office." Don't touch that dial!! (a lot of people did). Hang in there. The rewards will be amazing. Got your popcorn? ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED 07/23/2020 We're back in the studio this week, so Jer asked Mike to pick a movie for a good old-fashion trashin'. Was it worth it? Because this week we're discussing the 1999 beginning of Brendan Fraser's downfall with "Dudley Do-Right", yet another animated adaptation that doesn't know its audience. Based on the Jay Ward cartoon, the movie is directed by Hugh Wilson and also stars Sarah Jessica Parker, Alfred Molina, Eric Idle, Robert Prosky and Alex Rocco.
