Conversations with Musicians, with Leah Roseman

Martha Anne Toll is a novelist and literary and cultural critic, also a violist whose classical music training informs her artistic practice. She recently published her second novel, Duet for One, a beautiful love story based on the lives of musicians.his book is also about the death of a mother, and releasing this conversation on Mother's Day (in our countries) has a particular resonance for those of us whose mothers have died, and Martha and I talked about processing our own grief. We focused on both this book and her novel Three Muses, which I also recommend. You'll hear about her high and low points as a violist, different ways she has helped with programs related to social justice, and her involvement in the literary world including supporting less-represented authors. We also talked about the classical music world and living true to your values. Martha Toll comes to writing professionally after a career dedicated to social justice, and she shared some great perspectives on both pursuits. I've linked Martha's list of book and author suggestions in the complete show notes on my website, where you'll also find other episodes linked that you'll like, the transcript and the video!Martha Anne Toll websiteOriginal MerchCan you buy this independent podcaster a coffee? Episode 21   Publishing is a tough industry no matter what age you are. Author Martha Anne Toll's award-winning book, Three Muses, was published when she was 64 years old. Today I am in conversation with her to talk about what it means to publish your first book as an older person--because with age comes wisdom, experience, and perspective. I loved having this conversation with Martha and I know you will enjoy listening to it and learning about her very fascinating career, her book Three Muses, and the insight she provides.   Resources Sign up for the WriterSpark newsletter: https://writersparkacademy.com/newslettersignup/ WriterSpark Website: http://writersparkacademy.com Grab WriterSpark Swag! https://www.teepublic.com/stores/writerspark/share Learn more about the host, Melissa Bourbon: http://melissabourbon.com Subscribe to WriterSpark on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCnKN2ZVZwjoAOeHlBO-cRIw/videos Follow WriterSpark on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheWriterSpark Twitter: https://twitter.com/TheWriterSpark Instagram: http://instagram.com/bookishly_cozy TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@bookishly_cozy Visit Martha's website: https://www.marthaannetoll.com/

Today, Martha shares the story of her long and winding journey to publication, releasing her debut novel at the age of 65. There are valuable lessons that come with that kind of perseverance. What if we as writers can begin to see rejection as ordinary, as simply part of the process? What if our goal, instead of getting published, was to get 100 rejections every year? Would that increase our capacity to live through this writing life? Finally, Martha offers a writing practice that has served her well through the years.  Martha is the author of the new novel, The Three Muses.

In Three Muses (Regal House Publishing, 2022) by Martha Toll, John Curtin survives the Holocaust by singing for the entertainment of the kommendant who murdered his family. He's sent to America, probably by the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society, to be adopted by a family whose son was killed fighting the war. The nourishment, love, and kindness of his new parents allows him to thrive. Years later, John is forced by Dr Roth to relive the worst moments of his life during therapy he's required to do as part of his psychiatric training. Meanwhile, after seven-year-old Katherine loses her mother, her aunt enrolls her in ballet classes, never realizing how it will change Katherine's life. The first thing to change is her name – Boris Yanakov, the director and choreographer, changes her name to the more Russian-sounding Katya Symanova. He seduces Katya and makes her a star, but also controls her every movement. When John sees Katya perform in Paris in 1963, he's bewitched and can't stop thinking about her. The next time they meet, in New York, John thinks he's found the love of his life, but Katya is still under Boris's control. John's experience with the three muses of Song, Discipline, and Memory is completely different than Katya's, but they are both forced to claw their way through doubt, despair and loneliness. I started playing for fun, which is way more enjoyable than when I was forced to do it.” “I actually went to . . a classical piano conservatory until they kicked me out,” says Sophie. “But then I picked up a guitar and start writing songs, which I had never done before. Blend all marinade ingredients using a food processor or blender and pour over the meat. Gently work the marinade into the meat with your hands. Cover and refrigerate for at least four hours. Cook the marinated meat and vegetables together over medium-high 4-5 minutes, until meat is cooked through. Serve in a bowl over rice. Add an egg, over-easy on the top if desired. * A great alternative to using a bowl to marinate is to put the meat and marinade in a large plastic bag, seal it and work it into the meat that way.
