“We have to be really thoughtful about how we approach people. We don't know their story. We don't know what they're coming in with or what they need to gain. But what we do know is that people learn from people when we make them feel safe, when we have logic behind what we're doing, when we make it fun, and when we're memorable with what we're trying to say.” – Dr. Christie McMullen Today's featured fellow bestselling bookcaster is a wife, mompreneur, keynote speaker, culture designer for organizations, and Employee Satisfaction Specialist, Dr. Christie McMullen. Salesy: Boosting Sales & Scaling Your Online Business with Meghan Lamle
Welcome to Salesy with Meghan. Today, Meghan sat down to talk about business balance with Heather Vickery.Meghan spoke with Heather Vickery, who has been an entrepreneur nearly all her life. Starting off in luxury events, then wedding planning, Heather says, “[she] works well with people but not for people.” Loved the industry she was in; however, life still didn't stop, what will bring me joy she wondered. She realized people were seeing her as a guide ... as a coach. Heather realized being a coach is what she should lean into. Her mission is to help people embody joy and trust in a journey of self-alignment and light up. Meghan and Heather talk about how conducting business as usual isn't the same as conducting business before. They speak upon the importance of fitting in joy, pleasure and rest. Finding the balance between doing work and resting. Diving into the importance of reflection and how to brave the chance to be disappointed. Meghan speaks about the harms of the “I Just Want…” mindset, as it creates a moving goalpost mentality…preventing true reflection of evaluating our milestones and distance to our end goal. Touching on the importance of celebrating yourself. Heather also shares insight about her Alchemy Incubator program, that is 12 months long, has two retreats and hosts 10 women max. The purpose of this program is to teach women how to lead through the embodiment of joy. Links:InstagramLinkedinBlogPeople/Things Mentioned: Heather Vickery, who is certified in positive psychology, leadership and success, coaching, NLP, and human design. She's written several best-selling books, and also been a podcast for the last six years. Her work is around helping people come home to themselves. Isaac Mizrahi is a renowned fashion designer, performer, and TV personality who has undoubtedly achieved iconic status in the fashion world - and he didn't even want that career! He pulls back the curtain on his bold creativity and captivating charisma, sharing intimate details of his remarkable journey. From his Brooklyn roots, where his love for fashion first ignited, to designing puppet clothes as a child, attending Parsons School of Design, and launching his own celebrated label, his path to fame is as unique as it is inspiring. He shares his habit of reading obituaries and his fear that his own might get the details wrong, meaning he wants to be remembered for being a performer, not a fashion icon. While successful in the fashion world, he reveals a long-held dream: to perform, act, and sing—passions he was once too scared to pursue. But for Isaac, it's never too late. With exciting acting roles on the horizon, his future is as bright and exciting as ever. He also reflects on why he's more comfortable with failure than success. A fashion icon because of failure, he's no stranger to the rejections that come with pursuing an acting career. But for him, as long as you give your best in every audition, even if you don't get the part, at least someone witnessed you killing it. Isaac Mizrahi is a creative force with an unparalleled ability to blend fashion, entertainment, and art. He has left an indelible mark on each field he touches, and his journey from the vibrant streets of Brooklyn to the glittering stages of Broadway and the forefront of fashion innovation has been nothing short of extraordinary. With a decades-long career, he has become a household name known for his sharp wit, bold designs, and magnetic personality. Whether behind the scenes or in the spotlight, he has consistently pushed boundaries and redefined what it means to be a modern-day Renaissance man. He can be seen performing at 54 Below from August 28th through 31st. Meg Shaffer is a true artist with a heart full of words and a soul full of stories, and her passion is nothing short of infectious. Get ready to be transported to a world of wonder and words! This week, USA Today bestselling author Meg Shaffer joins Heather Vickery and Alan Seales on Was It Chance to discuss her lifelong passion for reading and writing. Meg opens up about how she's always been inspired by the idea of crafting stories that transport us, much like her childhood hero Willy Wonka. She shares how the loss of her beloved cat catapulted her into darkness, but writing her breakout novel, The Wishing Game, was the light that guided her out. With her second novel, The Lost Story, set to be July 16, 2024, Meg discusses the bravery it takes to fully immerse yourself in a story and the magic that awaits us when we step into new worlds. Our co-host, Heather, declared that reading ‘The Lost Story' was like entering a magical, queer adventure park she never wanted to leave - and we think you'll feel the same! Tune in for a heartwarming conversation about the power of words, the joy of getting lost in a good book, and why art will always be a little bit of magic. Get your copy of Meg's books ‘The Wishing Game' and pre-order her second novel, ‘The Lost Story' today. Being able to step into a story always feels magical. As an author, Meg feels as if she “lives” in the story. It requires complete immersion and needs to be the first thing you think of in the morning and the last thing at night. “I fell in love with Willy Wonka in the 3rd grade” - Meg says she was always inspired by the idea of writing something like this. The loss of her 21-year-old cat is what catapulted Meg into the dark and writing The Wishing Game is what helped her come out of that weariness. Under the name Tiffany Reisz, she wrote spicy, dark romance Harlequin Romance Novels! Meg says she collects sentences like jewels - they are her deepest passion. She first noticed words and sentences at age 12 and never looked back Reading transports you for a reason and you have complete control over it. There is always a mind beyond art and that's magic. At the age of 18, she started writing original fiction she was writing her own stories, quit her day job (as a bookseller) at 32, and went into writing full time. There are two schools of thought for authors: 1. Poverty is a great motivator to get your shit done even if you're not a “self-starter.” 2. Don't make creativity the thing that pays your bills because then you'll use the magic Screenplays and TV scripts are fun because she can create them quickly Meg is willing to completely throw out a story and start over in order to produce the best book possible. She isn't attached to the work in a way that she fears being judged - she's committed to the next final product possible. Her next book, The Lost Story will be released on July 16, 2024 Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Welcome to a crossover episode of "Was it Chance" where Alan Seales and Heather Vickery peel back the layers of serendipity to uncover the hard work and opportunities behind what looks like mere chance. In today's episode, we bring you a conversation with the extremely handsome and talented Andy Mientus, a true maverick of the stage and screen. From accidentally becoming one of Broadway's first social media managers to his heartwarming experience with Dolly Parton on the set of Heartstrings, and one amazing Broadway production credit after another, Andy's journey is one you don't want to miss. Andy shares with us his belief in staying proximate to your aspirations, even if the connection seems tangential, and how this philosophy led him to astounding opportunities—like touring with Spring Awakening and soaking in the Wicked Tour which felt like a "warm bath.” We're also have some juicy revelations—such as Alan Seales' surprising stance on Sondheim, the unexpected significance of The Met Gala for the theatre community, and the personal tales of failure that Andy calls his "close friends," teaching him resilience and the art of bouncing back. Moreover, Andy gives us a glimpse into his life beyond the stage lights. As a best-selling author of YA books and an actor who's not shied away from portraying significant LGBTQ+ roles, like the openly Gay character Hartley Rathaway in The Flash, Andy is a testament to the diverse avenues of artistic expression. As many of you know, our trans and gender expansive beloveds are under attack and being criminalized in many US states right now. This is so serious that they fit the criteria to be designated as internally displaced people (IDPs) by the United Nations. This isn't the first time fascism has reared its ugly head, and we at UUSC know how to respond. UUSC has been dedicated to aiding people being targeted by fascism since our founding in 1940. Our faith calls us to make holy trouble for the powers that would deny anyone's full humanity and divinity. Join us, holy troublemakers, now is the time! Music: Sol Singers with Susan Peck. Sing justice songs with us! Heather (she/her) is the Coordinator for Congregational Activism at the UU Service Committee and as such, works with congregations, state action networks and other groups that want to do their social justice work more effectively and faithfully. She is part of the Congregational Accompaniment Project for Asylum Seekers (CAPAS) team that matches (and supports) congregations with asylum seekers needing sponsorship and coordinates with UUSC's frontline trans partners working to get our beloveds free and safe through the Pink Haven Coalition. Outside of her paid work, Heather co-coordinates the Beyond Bond & Legal Defense Fund which is part of the wider Boston Immigration Justice Accompaniment Network in Massachusetts and is an active member of her UU church, First Parish Malden and an aspirant to UU Ministry.

With Anoushka Lucas' talent and success as a songwriter, it may come as a surprise for some that she initially had no interest at all in working in theatre. Just like in most of her endeavors, she fell into it. She expands on this as shares her journey, revealing her initial passive disposition, which contrasts with her willingness to embrace diverse experiences–the duality of man, as they say. From playing the piano and writing songs at an early age, Anoushka talks about her upbringing, writing songs from the point of view of the characters on TV, and how the piano became her sanctuary. She reflects on failure and her aversion to it, and the heartbreak and acceptance that her initial plan of becoming a pop star and securing a record deal isn't going to happen. Despite the initial struggle, she recognizes the value of the experience, emphasizing the usefulness of failure in shaping her life positively, proving that tenacity goes a long way. Anoushka Lucas is a singer, songwriter, musical theatre composer, and actor who has starred in West End productions, including “Oklahoma!” and “Jesus Christ Superstar”. She began composing music at the age of 14 and has a degree in Russian and Italian from Oxford University. She has been nominated for an Olivier award, an Evening Standard Theatre Award, and a Black British Theatre Award. She was the recipient of the Best Writer award in the 2023 stage debut awards. Among other films. You can also see her in “Murder on the Orient Express” and starting on the 21st of February, she can be heard in a brand new original musical podcast called “U.Me: The Complete Musical”. Among all the things Jai Rodriguez knows how to do well, not punching down is at the top of the list . Sharing his journey from going to Broadway to landing a role in the groundbreaking TV series, “Queer Eye For The Straight Guy”, his grit and talent took the stage by storm, playing in shows like “Rent” and “The Producers”. He shares how he got started by going to his first audition at the age of 12 – a funny but inspiring anecdote on why you shouldn't take ‘no' for an answer easily. Jai also recounts his “Queer Eye” audition, the success of the show, and the overwhelming response they received early on. Despite the external glamor, Jai reveals his financial struggles during the press tours. He also gets real as he talks about a pivotal moment in his career during a meeting with agents, and how he was told that he may not be castable due to his identity – an untrue trope that stayed with him throughout a lot of his career. While it may have affected him deeply, Jai did not let it stop him from taking up space in the industry by rephrasing “you can't do it” as “it's just never been done before”. Jai Rodriguez is an actor and musician best known for his role in the original Fab Five 'Culture Vulture' in the award-winning show “Queer Eye For The Straight Guy”. He had his Broadway debut at the age of 18 when he was cast as Angel in the critically-acclaimed musical, “Rent”. His other credits include the long-running musical, “The Producers”, “Zanna, Don't!”, and an off-Broadway hit, “Sex Tips for Straight Women from a Gay Man”. He has a web series, “The Horizon”, which is the most-watched LGBTQ web series in the world. Discipline • Grace • GratitudeMartha Anne Toll grew up a passionate ballet dancer, musician, and advocate for social and racial justice.Through her creative endeavors Martha learned three important life lessons which she will share in our conversation so be sure to stay tuned) and at the tender age of *almost* 65 she released her debut novel Three Muses, which has already been receiving great praise and awards! Martha is a true inspiration who has dedicated her life to helping elevate the lives of others and continues to follow her own passions. It took her well into adulthood to realize that the risks she was taking were actually brave!Writing in general is an act of bravery.THREE LIFE LESSONS: (1) The music is in the rests; (2) if you break things into component parts, you'll figure out how to put together a coherent whole; and (3) practice, practice, practice. Martha performed as a semi-professional orchestra and chamber music player in college and beyond.Bravery and courage come from unexpected places! The path toward publication was full of disappointment and despair.Getting a byline and being published as a book reviewer helped Martha build a platform.Rejection is normal in the arts - embrace it if you want to be successful. Martha chose to give back every time she was rejected and this helped keep things.Writing discipline: Martha likes to write in the morning and she firmly believes that writing begets writing. It doesn't matter what you're writing - JUST WRITE.Visit your local public library!!All reading counts - including audiobooks.Martha loves speaking to book groups and engaging with folks who are experiencing her books.Celebration: Martha had to get off the hamster wheel and criticize herself before she could really celebrate. If today all you have to give is 15% and you give 15%, then that's 100%. Math isn't our strong suit but we're pretty sure that tracks. Be honest with yourself on the days you can give 15% and the days you can give 100%. Only you know, and only you can show up based off of what you can give. No one else can make those calls besides you. The point here is this: You can't do incredible, badass things unless you can build from what's already working and what's already good. What's already working? The percentage you can give today. The habits you've implemented to fill up your cup before you try to fill anyone else's. Your unique “IT” factor only you can give. What's already good? The pockets of joy tucked into everyday that you notice and celebrate. The way that your best friend would describe you to a stranger. Everything you've achieved but never really let sink in. Listen as Erin and Heather conclude this three-part series on bravery, exploring what it means to build from what's already working and what's already good. ICYMI – Your Post-Episode Homework: Think of 10 things right now that you are grateful for. 10 things that you can see, touch, feel, hear, see, I said see, but you know what I'm talking about. Creative • Healing • NecessaryTrauma is passed down, via DNA, from generation to generation. And we've learned that it affects us in so many, previously unknown, ways. It's something we know, conceptually, happens but we haven't been able to really say how or why. Today's guest, Sharon Tubbs, dives deep into this by writing about her family history, specifically her grandfather Israel Page in her new book “They Got Daddy.”This candid and heart-centered conversation is one that helps bring healing and humanity to all of us, across whatever divides us. It's honest, compassionate, and important.Sharon Tubbs began her professional career as a newspaper reporter and editor. In a career that spanned seventeen years, she worked briefly for the Philadelphia Inquirer and then for the Tampa Bay Times. As a journalist, she covered various beats, including small-town government, local crime, and national religious issues. Today, Sharon is a writer, inspirational speaker, and the owner of Move Forward Communications. She's also the director of a nonprofit organization that empowers underserved residents in Fort Wayne, Indiana, to live healthier lives.TOP TAKEAWAYS FROM THIS EPISODE:Sharon felt called to write the story about her Grandfather's experience in Alabama in the 1950s.They Got Daddy is about Sharon's grandfather being kidnapped by the KKK when he dared to sue a white man in Alabama over a tragic accident that left him unable to work.Unless we tackle our history we are not truly able to heal.History allows us to speak truth, process, and heal. Not everyone wants to heal or dig through the trauma to get to the other side. The biggest surprise during this process was self-forgiveness.Being “colorblind” is basically a free pass to stick your head in the sand and pretend terrible things didn't happen and are not, currently, happening. When people have to rearrange their life based on what might happen, it leads to internalized fear and trauma. Most of the pushback Sharon experiences is in the nonprofit community. When we know better we are obligated to do better.Celebration for Sharon is relaxing and reading. What happens when you don't treat yourself with kindness before trying to be kind to others? You're hurt. You stay small. You allow yourself to be hurt more often by others because you don't value yourself. You lack a sense of worthiness. You are not as kind as you'd like to be or maybe as you think you are towards other people around you, because when you cannot be kind to yourself, you don't have the foundation to be kind to other people. You burnout. You don't have the energy resources to give to other people you may really, deeply want to because your cup is empty. Kindness is an inside job that eventually overflows into how you show up for others. Listen as Erin and Heather give you the how-to on living a kinder, braver life starting with the small things (that really aren't small). ICYMI – Your Post-Episode Homework: Think about the percentage that you are going to give to yourself today. How are you going to show up for you in this moment? Is it 10%? Is it 50%? Are you going to give one hundred percent today? Make that decision. And then I want you to actually give that percentage to yourself at the end of the day. At the end of the day, reflect: did I give myself what I promised myself? And if you did, find some way to celebrate. Maybe it's a bubble bath. Maybe it's one of those masks that you put on your face that make you look like Jason from those Halloween movies that are actually doing great things for your pores. I don't know. Do something that makes you feel good because you deserve it. Connect with Heather Vickery: Heather's Instagram Heather's LinkedIn The Brave Files Podcast Was it Chance? Today we're busting bravery myths, starting with the idea that we can like and trust ourselves when we get “there.” “There” meaning that dream job, selling X number of copies of your book, or moving into your dream home. The truth is, the future isn't real. We can't touch it, hear it, see it, smell it, or feel it. We can access it only through our imagination, which is a dangerous water to tread. And because the future isn't real, telling ourselves that we're going to like and trust ourselves in the future is, to the truest meaning of the word, pointless. On the contrary, when we practice liking and trusting ourselves right now, we start showing up in new ways. We take our “IT” factors to the highest power. We form lifetime connections. We take intentional creative risks. We propel ourselves to our next best thing. Your future self doesn't need your bravery, your right now self does. Listen to Erin and guest Heather Vickery discuss what it means to make the brave leap in your everyday life. ICYMI – Your Post-Episode Homework: Think about your own story with bravery. What is a time that you have shown up for yourself? You felt strong, you felt empowered, and you did something that you did not think that you could do. You got comfortable with the uncomfortable. Think about that story today. Then give yourself a big high five or a hug because my friends, bravery is boss. Bravery is leading the way for our teams, our families, our friends. Bravery is showing up for you. Connect with Heather Vickery: Heather's Instagram Heather's LinkedIn The Brave Files Podcast Was it Chance?
