That's what high performance is to me, the ability to adapt rapidly so you can achieve your potential. There are five key pillars to creating the conditions for adaptability: sleep, exercise, mental resilience, nutrition, and community/relationships.” - Dr. Erik Korem   “I maybe have a different concept on leadership. To me, leading is a verb. If you're leading, you're a leader. If you're swimming you're a swimmer, if you're driving you're a driver. If you're leading you're by definition a leader. I define leading as being looked to in a particular moment to make a decision or perform an action based on your unique gifts and abilities. So by that definition, everybody is a leader. All rank and role really describe is how many people are hoping you get it right when it's your turn to wear the weight.” - Clint Bruce "Attention is the currency of performance." - Dr. Peter Haberl “That's what I've discovered in the lives of brilliant, prolific, healthy creatives, is that they have networks of people they leverage in the course of their work. That they learn from, that they were challenged by, that they gave great insight and purview into their own life and work, in such a way that they were able to receive feedback that helped them get better at what they do.” - Todd Henry "Restful and fulfilling sleep enables you to grow, adapt, and thrive. It creates the conditions for adaptation, so you can pursue audacious goals and thrive in uncertainty." - Dr. Erik Korem "Most exercise programs fail, not because the reps and sets are poorly designed, but because the program doesn't adjust for how much stress your body can adapt to that day!. That's why Dr. Chris Morris' research and practical application of fluid periodization is the key for unlocking your performance potential." - Dr. Erik KoremSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Chip Scanlan is an award-winning former journalist who has authored or edited a dozen books. His newest book is Writers on Writing: Inside the Lives of 55 Distinguished Writers and Editors. Each writer or editor included in the book was asked the same four questions. The answers to those questions are enlightening to read. Included in the book are Susan Orlean, Dan Barry, Jan Winburn, David Finkel, Roy Peter Clark, and so many more. The book also includes ten writers who have been on this podcast. It's not just journalists featured in the book though. Scanlan included poets and fiction writers. He's covered the entire realm of writing. The end result? Narrative journalists aren't so different from poets after all. Ultimately, we're all just writers. Scanlan has written two journalism textbooks. His work has appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, NPR, and many other places. Two of his essays have been listed as “Notables” in Best American Essays. He publishes the newsletter and blog “Chip's Writing Lessons” and is a regular contributor to Nieman Storyboard. He formerly directed the writing program and the National Writer's Workshops at The Poynter Institute.

Key takeaways: Don’t make decisions and never revisit them When we have fear, uncertainty and doubt (F.U.D factor) we go into a mode of survival, which can fixate decisions instead of getting broader perspectives Know how to work with your grow players and your role players Your staff needs time to get stuff done The most successful companies have CEOs that don’t have many tasks Most people can’t sustain by winging it Even if you’re alone in your business you can’t be alone in the journey

Magazine. Here are the highlights of this episode:2:46 David's ideal Client: Three levels of building a business; level 1 start-up, level 2 owner relying company, and level 3 is an owner independent company. We tend to work with people in that      Owner reliance stage. They started to build a business but it's totally circumscribed by them. Generally, sales of maybe half a million to 20 million dollars a year. They want to grow but more importantly than just growth or at least equal importantly, they want their lives back.3:23 Problem David helps solve: I'm going to give you two. First one I called it 'self-employment trap', they build this business but it all revolves around them, all roads lead back to them. They don't have a business; they have a self-employment job. The second one is that they start to break part of that but they are still relying on what I called 'hit-by-a-bus' test. If something happens to them or if one key person in their company, they are in a world of hurt within 30 to 60 days. Their business is out of business. That's generally the biggest problem that we solve.4:09 Typical symptoms that clients do before reaching out to David: It boils down to two things; stress and overwhelm. They have businesses that work, it's profitable, they've been doing this for a while, but everything falls back to them. Before we start working with a client, before we work with them, 60 to 80 hours or more per week is a very typical work week. Generally, if they take any vacation before we work with them, it's not really a vacation. They still check in everyday with email, text, and other app feeds. And so, the questions now become "how can they actually have a business that doesn't own them but they own their business?" that's generally what it is that they're feeling. They're feeling out of control with this part, they feel like their business literally has this 'hooks' into them. They're appreciative that it supported them as well as it has but there's this low level that if something happens to them, their businesses is gone. And they're really feeling overwhelmed and tired before we even start working with them.5:19 What are some of the common mistakes that folks make before finding David and his solution:  I got two quick ones; they biggest one is that they're trying to 'brute force' their solution, "oh if I need to grow, I'm going to grow by working harder, longer work nights, on the weekends, I'll bring a little bit of work on my vacation because no one's calling me, I can get the real work done.." and the problem is, there's always this level that the ceiling of success with that.

And I know where you’re at. You’re working hard and qualified for what you do but you aren’t getting what you want. You have plans on getting to the C-suite or launching a business but ultimate success seems as far away today as ever. You’re in the right place because you can get there from here. And I can help. Who I Am I’m a speaker, coach, and former Division I All-American wrestler that helps motivated former athletes to reach their full potential by getting clarity on what they really want and taking aggressive action to lead their ideal life not just despite their prior failures but because of them. I’m a husband and father of four. And I’m a serial entrepreneur. I’ve launched multiple successful businesses as well as the obligatory failed one. I’ve been the executive director of a non-profit and have raised millions of dollars. I’ve worked in sales. I’ve even been a Division I head coach. While I was born in a blue-collar home I have spent my life surrounded by Olympians, CEO’s, and millionaires. Jim Rohn said, “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” I’ve been lucky. I’ve learned the habits of successful people and guess what. You’re just like them. I know because I know your type. You’re programmed for hard work, which is a prerequisite for success, but you’ve never been shown how to use what you know to create the life you want with the tools you have. I will show you how. Why You Are Here You've worked hard to achieve greatness. You’ve set goals and maybe even set records. You’ve definitely failed and you’ve at some point found yourself questioning if you were on the right track. You need to understand this: You are far more prepared to succeed than those who’ve not tried, competed, struggled, and overcome as you have. That’s the value of your education as someone who aims high. You are prepared to be as successful as your wildest dreams will allow. As we, business owners, continue to hustle and do right by our business, we sometimes forget to keep that balance with the other aspects of our lives, particularly our family and even our health. How can we achieve that without sacrificing one over the other? In this episode, Meny Hoffman gets the answers from his guest, David Finkel—a Wall Street Journal bestselling author, syndicated columnist for Inc.com, Forbes.com, and CEOWorld.com, and the CEO of Maui Mastermind. Through his book, The Freedom Formula, David shares how we can build a company faster that is not about the time and effort but about the value created. He talks about working smarter, not harder, and passing it on to your teams so that you can build a company that is independent of any one person. On achieving that work-life balance, David then gives some practical tips that would help you go about creating the time and space to focus on your highest value.

The arrival of David Finkel's children was a complete shock to him. He never changed a diaper, never fed a child, and totally had no idea what to do. He was very busy being a father. At the same time, he was still owning a business. Not wanting to miss those precious moments with his children, David realized that he needed to make a change in the way he ran his business. He needed to run the business more intelligently. This led to the creation of the freedom formula. Applying what he has learned from this experience, David is now able to successfully manage his time and energy. As a result, David is able to achieve better business success and at the same time have a better life.

Sometimes running a business can take over your life, especially if you built it from the ground up. It doesn’t have to be that way. Many of us become entrepreneurs because we want to steer clear of the 9 to 5 job. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. But if you’re working hours on end on your business, technically, you’re still treating it like your job. My guest, David Finkel, is here to help entrepreneurs find their way to a healthy work-life balance. David is the co-author of SCALE, and a Wall Street Journal and Business Week bestselling author of 12 business books. He’s also the CEO of Maui Mastermind®️, one of the nation’s premier business coaching companies. He and his coaching team have scaled and sold over $62 billion in businesses. Tune in!
