Discipline • Grace • GratitudeMartha Anne Toll grew up a passionate ballet dancer, musician, and advocate for social and racial justice.Through her creative endeavors Martha learned three important life lessons which she will share in our conversation so be sure to stay tuned)  and at the tender age of *almost* 65 she released her debut novel Three Muses, which has already been receiving great praise and awards!  Martha is a true inspiration who has dedicated her life to helping elevate the lives of others and continues to follow her own passions. Talk about brave.Episode Takeaways:Martha grew up surrounded by passionate educators and readers. She doesn't have any formal writing education but her parents served as passionate editors from a young age.Her social justice career lasted 25 years long. It took her well into adulthood to realize that the risks she was taking were actually brave!Writing in general is an act of bravery.THREE LIFE LESSONS: (1) The music is in the rests; (2) if you break things into component parts, you'll figure out how to put together a coherent whole; and (3) practice, practice, practice. Martha performed as a semi-professional orchestra and chamber music player in college and beyond.Bravery and courage come from unexpected places! The path toward publication was full of disappointment and despair.Getting a byline and being published as a book reviewer helped Martha build a platform.Rejection is normal in the arts - embrace it if you want to be successful. Martha chose to give back every time she was rejected and this helped keep things.Writing discipline: Martha likes to write in the morning and she firmly believes that writing begets writing. It doesn't matter what you're writing - JUST WRITE.Visit your local public library!!All reading counts - including audiobooks.Martha loves speaking to book groups and engaging with folks who are experiencing her books.Celebration: Martha had to get off the hamster wheel and criticize herself before she could really celebrate. Today we're taking a look at pricing. I want to talk about this because - based on my conversations with so many of you - there's a good chance you might be selling yourself short in how you price your services. And I get that! Setting your rates is EASILY one of the most stressful things about running a private practice. When I was starting out, I wrestled with questions like:Where do I even start for figuring this out, for Pete's sake? What are other people, my colleagues, charging? How could I possibly charge THAT much? And many more. Can you relate? Pricing conversations bring up all KINDS of tricky issues for us. But like anything else, we can get a handle on this when we learn how to think about it. So if you're unsure about your rates, today is a good day! I look at this a little differently than most, and I'm going to help you. :) A lot of business gurus will tell you to decide how much you want to make a year, and determine your rates from there.  Nothing wrong with that! In fact, I might say the exact same thing in another context. But there's really another side to pricing that I don't think we talk about nearly enough - and that's what we're covering today.>>AND, to help you out,  I've got a GIFT for you....I've created a little worksheet that will help you think through the questions I'm speaking to in this episode. Whenever I've shared this with my audience in the past they've told me this is EXTREMELY helpful, because it's such a different way of looking at things. In fact, a lot of them end up raising their rates just because of what this exercise reveals. So click HERE to grab your free worksheet, and listen to the episode. THEN DO THIS.

In this episode of WriterpreneuHER your host Racheal Blackmore talks about the writing industry, how you can be paid when you write, and what matters in writing. Today, Racheal breaks down one of the game-changing strategies that allowed her to become a six-figure writer. Starting to Write [1:15] When Racheal first started writing, she wrote because it was cathartic and felt like she had something to say. But it was inconsistent and almost always ended with her waiting for that moment she finally felt ready, or worthy or competent enough. [2:38] For years, Racheal didn't believe in her ability to successfully publish and get paid to write because it was only on the very rare occasion that she might share her piece with a family member. Lucrative Lifestyle [3:36] It is not some arbitrary revenue number you can reach and feel like you finally arrived. And it does look different for everyone, but it centers on freedom, purpose, and abundance. Racheal's lucrative lifestyle is the ability to be an intentional mama and raise my four kids from home while being a professional writer. Freelance Writer [5:01] Racheal became a freelance writer getting paid less than a penny, a word for white label agencies and anybody she could find. She tried everything like blogging for profit and affiliate marketing but nothing really worked. [7:14] She made a game-changing decision to write for 30 minutes every single day no matter what, for two years - and it worked! Becoming a Serious In-Demand Writer [8:56] Being a writer is a gift, and she wants to encourage you to own it, be skilled at it, and have the courage to share it with the world. Racheal will introduce her Just Write framework to you. [10:46] If you want to use Racheal's just right framework and are ready for honest feedback, she has a solution for you. She invites you to jump into her WriterpreneuHER community and ask if someone's willing to read and give feedback to your pieces. [11:10] The point of this is about stepping out of your comfort zone and actually sharing what you write with people. And second, it's the value of receiving honest feedback. Don't Quit [13:35] Today is not the day you quit. As a writer, you have a gift to share, which can change the world forever. We need more skilled, well-intentioned writers like you to step up and share truth and joy and love and impact and all good things like never before. Go to https://www.writerpreneuher.com/ to learn how you can up-level your skills and gain the confidence you need to share your gift with the world make a massive impact and change the future for you and your family. There are several lines that allude to their blindness and growing weakness, but the major one is where Mace Windu states in “Attack of the Clones” that their connection with the force is waning.“Star Wars Episode II - Attack of the Clones - Obi-Wan Kenobi reports to Yoda and Mace” - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dTFWEHW_REs The Verbivore references the 1970s Star Wars Christmas Special. If you haven't seen it, we definitely don't recommend that you do. That's time you can never get back. :-) But, what we do recommend is the 2020 Lego Star Wars Holiday Special on Disney Plus. https://www.disneyplus.com/movies/lego-star-wars-holiday-special/22xf1U47vVe0 The Verbivore mentions that she thinks that at the end of The Rise of Skywalker Rey's yellow lightsaber and her overall path in the force could point to her being more like a Gray Jedi. I zoomed through this one, didn't I? Feel free to take longer with any of my suggested prompt times if you like. Also, for anyone who is desperately curious, it was a Great Blue Heron I was seeing. And, the black and white bird who I got excited about is likely a Black Turnstone. Alas, not a loon. That was wishful thinking. A note about the song at the end "Already Forgiven" by Basia Bulat: I attempted to use something that I thought was going to be super fancy - including an actual song track from Spotify - but I just found out that not only will it just be premium Spotify users who will hear the full track (with basic Spotify users hearing a short preview), but it also won't appear on my episode list on other podcast platforms. So, I'm re-releasing this episode without the song attached. Do go look it up though! As I wrote in the description for the now Spotify-only episode, it doesn't hurt to try something new, but I think I'll stick to my usual format of sharing songs from the Just Write for introverts inspiration playlist. Here is the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D_Y0NFHNhggThe Verbivore mentions a trick to have two outlines to manage your mystery and another to manage all of the clues (real clues, false clues, pivotal clues) and what your suspects are up to at any given point in the novel. There are several resources that mentioned this practice, but the YouTube video “NANOWRIMO / How to Write a Murder Mystery” by Rae Sterling was the most helpful and concise.Fable mentions the 3 elements of mystery as discribed by Save the Cat! They are:1) The detective does not change, we do; yet he can be any kind of gumshoe — from pro to amateur to imaginary.2) The secret of the case is so strong it overwhelms the worldly lures of money, sex, power, or fame. We gots to know! And so does the Whydunit hero.3) Finally, the dark turn shows that in pursuit of the secret, the detective will break the rules, even his own — often ones he has relied on for years to keep him safe. The pull of the secret is too great. The Verbivore references Rian Johnson’s subversion of the mystery genre in his movie Knives Out by purposefully adding in thriller elements and beats into his story. She doesn’t refernces details to keep from spoiling the movie, but there are several great YouTube videos that explore this melding of these story elements. It doesn’t matter if you’re regularly creating blogs and emails or if you’re brand new. Be An Expert You must be an expert on your subject and know ten words for every one word you write. Readers will know if you’re making things up. For instance, if you want to write on success, you must already be successful. Expand Your Knowledge Confidence is an important thing to demonstrate with your written words. If you feel unsure about your topic, the ideas you present and how you structure your arguments, your audience may not believe you. Find Your Passion While it’s something that ANYONE can do, writing a book is very difficult. There’s one way to make the process more challenging: Write about something that doesn’t interest you. "People usually say ‘I know I should be able to JUST WRITE', which is true but it doesn't help them. Regardless of your outlining process, PREWRITING IS NECESSARY. In FICTION, I can sit down and write by the seat of my pants but for the most part, the outline cuts down a lot of the mental chatter. I would take away that term/phrase/advice, ‘Just sit down and write.' I would take that away, destroy it; never to be seen again. I would replace that with LET'S HAVE A CONVERSATION." — Tesa Colvin

We of course include our #snackbook – a selection of deliciousness sent by some of our favorite listeners who understand how snacking goes hand in hand with procrastination. We are so tired from life we forget to introduce ourselves, which is somewhat typical for us, so in case you are new to the show here’s what’s going on. We are longtime friends and writing partners. We also consider ourselves professional procrastinators when it comes to that writing part!
