Jesus will not allow His disciples to keep the little children away, because those who enter the kingdom come to Jesus precisely in the dependence and need of such little children. In that context, the rich young man exemplifies the completely wrong approach to Jesus. When this man assumes that his own goodness will earn eternal life, Jesus uses the Law, attempting to lead the man to despair of his own goodness and look instead to the goodness of God. When the man rejects Jesus' Word, Jesus teaches His disciples that riches easily become a stumbling block to entering God's kingdom. Although it is impossible for man to enter salvation by his strength, God has done the impossible by saving sinners.  Rev. As Jesus draws closer to Jerusalem, Pharisees ask Jesus to give His opinion in an ongoing debate concerning lawful reasons for divorce. Although their question comes from ill intent, Jesus sees through their test. He points them back to God's institution of marriage. God designed marriage as the lifelong union of one man and one woman. Although the hardness of sinful hearts may lead to divorce, God's intention is that marriage last until death. When the disciples question Jesus further, He upholds the value of celibacy for those who have received this divine gift.  Rev. Peter recognizes that Jesus has been teaching about forgiveness, but he has not yet grasped the abundance of God's mercy. Jesus calls His disciples to forgive freely without measure because God has forgiven us freely without measure. To illustrate this, Jesus tells a parable of a servant whose astronomical debt is forgiven by his master. When that same servant has a fellow servant who owes him a significant but much smaller amount, he refuses forgiveness. In a similar way, the refusal to forgive shows that there is no faith in Christ's forgiveness, whereas our forgiveness of someone who has sinned against us is simply our confession of the reality that Christ has died for all.  Rev. Jesus highlights the greatness of His little ones by saying that their angels always see the Father's face. When Jesus' disciples focus on their Father, they will share in the concern of the angels for the little ones of Jesus' kingdom. His care for His little ones shows through His activity as the Good Shepherd who seeks and saves the lost. In the same way, Christians do not neglect sin that threatens the Church, but in love, Christians seek for reconciliation and forgiveness for the sake of the health of the family of God.  Rev. Jesus' disciples show their continued misunderstanding of His teaching by their question concerning greatness in His kingdom. Jesus flips their expectations upside down by placing a child in their midst and telling them that those who are needy and dependent like children are the only ones who enter the kingdom of heaven. This is what the disciples must realize about themselves and each other as fellow members of Jesus' kingdom. When Jesus descends the mountain of His transfiguration, the nine disciples left below have failed to cast out a demon-possessed boy. After lamenting their lack of faith, Jesus heals the boy and encourages His disciples to have the faith of a mustard seed, that is, faith that grows in trust of His words. Despite Jesus' teaching, the disciples continue to have distress over His coming suffering, death, and resurrection. Nonetheless, as Jesus provides a remarkable catch to Peter, Jesus teaches that His coming death and resurrection do make all believers sons of His kingdom.  Rev. After Peter's glorious confession, Jesus makes sure His disciples know what it means for Him to be the Christ. As the Anointed One of God, Jesus must go to Jerusalem to suffer, die, and rise. In a pagan area away from Jerusalem, Jesus questions His disciples concerning what others say about Himself. While the answers given include elements of truth, none are complete. Jesus turns the question to the disciples themselves. Who do THEY say Jesus is? Peter speaks up for the whole group with a confession of faith that comes not from Peter's wisdom but from God's revelation. Jesus promises that He will build His Church on the rock of the firm foundation of this confession. The Pharisees and Sadducees continue to refuse to believe in Jesus, and they insincerely ask Him for a sign. Jesus rebukes them for knowing how to recognize the coming weather but for failing to recognize the coming of the Christ. Therefore, Jesus refuses them a sign other than the one He has already offered, the sign of Jonah. The disciples miss what Jesus means when He speaks of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees, assuming that He is talking about food. Jesus rebukes them and reminds them of His two feeding miracles, teaching that they should look first for the kingdom of God, which is given through faith to both Jews and Gentiles.  Rev. Jesus continues His compassionate ministry in Galilee by teaching and healing great crowds. As they come to Him with great urgency, Jesus heals their disabilities. As the crowds glorify the God of Israel, Jesus tells the disciples His will of feeding the crowds. The disciples forget Jesus' recent miracle of feeding a large crowd, but their faltering faith does not prevent Jesus from accomplishing His will. Historically, the people of Tyre and Sidon were enemies of God's people. It's no wonder, then, that the Evangelist draws our attention to the presence of a Canaanite woman there who confesses the truth about Jesus as the Son of David as she prays for His mercy upon her daughter. Jesus' seemingly enigmatic responses throughout teach His disciples about the nature of His ultimate ministry to Gentiles, even as Jesus also tests the woman's faith. Despite Jesus' harsh responses, she continues to cling to Him, knowing that she is a Gentile sinner but that He is the generous God who has enough for her to have some crumbs. Jesus vindicates her faith in Him and gives her the mercy He loves to give.  Rev. The opposition against Jesus escalates when the Pharisees and scribes criticize Jesus' disciples for not washing their hands. Although the man-made traditions surrounding God's Law may have had good intentions, Jesus rebukes these men who have let their traditions replace God's Word. To the entire crowd, Jesus teaches that true uncleanness comes not from without but from within. Jesus patiently teaches His disciples the same reality concerning the true defilement of man. People are not sinners because they sin. People sin because they are sinners. Therefore, only the Gospel of Jesus Christ can bring salvation to us.  Rev. When Jesus sends His disciples across the sea by boat, He dismisses the crowds and goes by Himself to pray. As the disciples' boat goes with difficulty across the sea, Jesus walks on the water to them, showing Himself to be the Maker and Ruler of all creation. The disciples initially react in fear, but Jesus takes away their fear by His Word. He answers Peter's bold request to walk on the water, but Peter's fear causes him to sink. Though the disciples' faith falters, they worship Jesus as the Son of God on the boat. On the other side of the sea, the Son of God continues to heal those who are sick.  Rev. Upon hearing of John's death, Jesus withdraws by boat to a desolate place alone. When the crowds follow Him on foot, Jesus does not react with anger or annoyance, but with compassion. In that compassion, He heals the sick all day long. When the disciples ask Jesus to send the crowds away to eat, Jesus calls on them to feed the crowds. The disciples recognize their own helplessness and put food in Jesus' hands. Jesus multiplies the loaves and fish to satisfy over five thousand people. By this miracle, Jesus shows His generosity for His people and His desire to host His people, pointing forward to the later gift of His Holy Supper.  Rev. When Herod the tetrarch hears the miracles of Jesus, Herod believes John has been raised from the dead. The Evangelist recounts the story of how John was martyred, going back to his imprisonment for preaching God's Word against Herod's adultery. Although Herod has authority, everyone around him exercises power over him, from Herodias to Herodias' daughter to the crowds. Although Herod cowardly puts John to death, the Word of God that John preached endures forever. Jesus concludes His discourse of parables by asking His disciples about their understanding. Their affirmative answer is true because they do believe in Jesus, even if their knowledge will still falter. Having been trained for the kingdom of heaven, Jesus makes His disciples true scribes who find the treasures of the Scriptures revealed in Him. Tragically, that does not take place when Jesus preaches in His hometown. The residents there falsely assume they know Jesus because they think they know His family. Jesus again tells two short parables with similar meaning. He compares God's reign to someone who searches to find something very valuable, and when he finds it, he sells everything to buy it. While Christians should value God's kingdom above all else, Jesus tells these two parables to teach us how He has in love given up all that is His to make us His own. Through two short parables that use the images of a mustard seed and leaven, Jesus makes a similar point. Both a mustard seed and leaven are small and seem insignificant, yet over time, both bring substantial growth. In a similar way, God's reign as King may seem insignificant right now in the ministry of Jesus, but the Lord promises that His reign will become a home for many people. Jesus tells the crowds another parable that uses the image of farming. A master sows good seed in his field, but an enemy sows weeds right on top of the good seed. When the servants ask about pulling the weeds, the master commands that both be left to grow until they are separated at the harvest. The disciples receive Jesus' explanation of this parable privately, and He focuses their attention on the harvest, that is, the end of the age. At that time, the angels will separate the unrighteous from the righteous. Until that time, the Church is called to patient endurance and trust in Christ, the King.  Rev. Although Jesus has just healed a demon-possessed man, some scribes and Pharisees ask Jesus for another sign. Jesus refuses to give any sign except the sign of Jonah— that is, Jesus' own death and resurrection. He warns His opponents of further rejection of His work. Jesus withdraws from those who are ready to destroy Him because the hour of His death has not yet come. After He heals a demon-oppressed man, the Pharisees renew their claim that Jesus casts out demons by the prince of demons. Jesus points out the error of their logic and proclaims that He has come as the One who binds Satan and rescues people from the devil's deadly domain. The Pharisees question Jesus for allowing His disciples to pluck heads of grain on the Sabbath, accusing Him of allowing work on the day of rest. Jesus makes it plain from the Scriptures that He is the Lord of the Sabbath, and His disciples are keeping the commandment by being with Him. As Jesus is speaking about John, He begins to describe the generation that has heard them both preach. The unbelieving hearers were not satisfied, no matter what was preached, yet the truth of God's Word will be vindicated. Judgment, however, awaits those places that refused to believe Jesus' mighty words and works. The Father reveals Himself not to the wise and understanding, but to little children, that is, those who come to Jesus entirely dependent on Him. Jesus promises His disciples that as they confess Him before the world, He will confess them before His Father in heaven. The disciples must know that this will bring division even within their own families, and they must bear this division as carrying a cross while following Jesus. To lose their lives for His sake will be to truly keep their lives eternally. Those who receive the disciples are actually receiving Jesus and the Father who sent Him. Jesus prepares His disciples for the opposition they will face as they go out proclaiming God's kingdom. However, the Holy Spirit will give them words to speak as they endure to the end. The hostility the disciples face should be unsurprising since their Lord faced the same. This will give the disciples courage to proclaim the Word of God openly. Jesus sends His twelve first, not to the Gentiles or Samaritans, but to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. These lost sheep need to hear the message that both John and Jesus have preached: “The kingdom of heaven is at hand!” God's reign as King brings healing from sickness and rescue from demons among those who hear the Twelve's message. God's reign as King will provide for the Twelve as they go, as He provides for their physical needs through the generosity of those who hear and believe. A ruler comes to Jesus, asking Him to lay His hand on the ruler's dead daughter to give her life again. As Jesus goes, He gives cleansing life to another daughter whose issue of blood has made her unclean. As Jesus' touch brings life to this woman, so His touch brings life to the girl who has died. After leaving the house, two blind men cry out to Jesus for mercy. With faith in Jesus as the Son of David, they receive the gift of sight from the Lord. Soon, people bring a demon-oppressed man to Jesus, and He casts out the demon and makes the man speak once more. While this leads the crowds to astonishment, the Pharisees are convinced that Jesus is working in league with the devil.  Rev. While Matthew is at the tax booth, Jesus goes to him and speaks an authoritative Word: “Follow Me!” That Word accomplishes Jesus' will of making Matthew a disciple. Back in Capernaum, some men bring to Jesus their paralytic friend on his bed. Jesus sees their faith and speaks comforting words of forgiveness to the man. When the scribes consider this blasphemy, Jesus sees their thoughts and corrects them. Jesus has commanded that He will go to the other side of the sea, and so He falls asleep in the boat as the disciples take Him across. The great storm that arises causes the disciples to forget the Lord's promise, so they cry out to Him in fear. Jesus rebukes their fear before rebuking the winds and the sea. By this action, He clearly shows that He is God. On the other side of the sea, two demon-possessed men confront Jesus. Even though the enemy is powerful, the demons are no match for Jesus as He sends them into a herd of pigs that spells the demons' doom. When Jesus enters Peter's house in Capernaum, He heals Peter's mother-in-law, and she begins to serve Him. Having finished His teaching in the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus descends as crowds follow Him. A leper emerges and cries out for cleansing, which Jesus gives in His good will. In touching the leper, Jesus does not become unclean; instead, His cleansing flows to the leper. After Jesus enters Capernaum, a centurion approaches Jesus for healing for his servant. The centurion knows the authority of Jesus' Word and so does not even ask Jesus to enter his house. False teaching would lead people off the narrow path to life. That's why Jesus warns His disciples against the deception of false teachers. Although they may look good on the outside, their evil on the inside can be seen in the fruit of what they say. The Lord will not be fooled on the Last Day, however. Jesus reminds His disciples that they pray to their heavenly Father who is a generous Giver. They need not be afraid to ask, seek, or knock with confidence and persistence, because their heavenly Father knows even better than earthly fathers how to give good gifts. As God gives good gifts to His children, so Jesus' disciples show love to others as they desire to be loved themselves. Although Jesus does authorize His disciples to discern what is good from what is evil, Jesus does not authorize His disciples to bring the judgment of condemnation. Just as Jesus' disciples do not practice their righteousness for the sake of being seen, so they do not treasure those things that can be seen. Rather, the true treasure of the Christian is a heavenly treasure, the righteousness of Christ that comes by faith. This treasure is indestructible and makes for a healthy eye, so that we can look upon the things of this life with the proper perspective. Jesus expects that His disciples will engage in the discipline of fasting. Abstaining from food for a time reminds Christians that we do not live by bread alone, but by every Word that comes from the mouth of God. Like other forms of outward piety, Christians do not fast for the sake of being seen by others. As Jesus teaches His disciples how to put His righteousness into practice, He warns them against doing it only for an outward show. Jesus ensures that His disciples know that the neighbor whom they are to love includes their enemy. Their Heavenly Father pours His gifts upon the righteous and the unrighteous, and so His Christians are to show the same sort of perfect love. To love only those who love in return is to practice the sort of righteousness that even the pagans already accomplish. God calls His people to His own holiness. Although we never measure up in our actions, He bestows holiness upon us through His grace in Jesus.  Rev. Jesus attacks any attempt to keep the Law as a matter of checking all the right boxes. Oaths are not a matter of using the right formulation. As Jesus continues to expound upon His Law, He deepens our understanding of the Sixth Commandment. Physical adultery does not only break marriage; the lust of the heart already sins against God's gift of a spouse. Jesus' disciples shouldn't just shrug their shoulders at divorce and make sure to go about it with the right procedures. Jesus' disciples should keep their goal of upholding and protecting marriage, rather than breaking it apart. Although Jesus would not have His disciples engage in self-mutilation, He would have us take steps necessary to remove the causes of sin in our lives so that we would live according to the clean heart He creates in us.  Rev.
