Join Clifford Paul at East Bay Sand Bar in Unama'ki (also known as Cape Breton in Nova Scotia). Clifford refers to this beautiful place on the Bras D'or Lakes as the shorelines of his ancestors.Throughout this episode, Clifford illuminates ways in which Mi'kmaw traditional knowledge and Western scientific knowledge can be woven together through what is known as two-eyed-seeing, or Etuaptmumk. Elder Albert Marshall (who you will hear from briefly) and his late wife, Elder Murdena Marshall, developed this approach which is now being applied across many fields internationally. Clifford Paul treats us to a traditional oral story and a science story to help explain the approach. He also helps us understand how non-Indigenous people can learn to use two-eyed seeing and he talks about how traditional knowledge can come from many different cultures. Hear about his holistic work as Moose Manager through UINR (Unama'ki Institute of Natural Resources) and about the need to communicate in a way similar to how different species in ecosystems communicate with one another for the health of the whole. Also discussed is the importance of inspiring in our youth a sense of place and understanding of the natural world. Change of behaviour is the way to move forward, and can come from being, as Clifford says, "a conduit for change”.Clifford Paul is a father and grandfather. He has done a variety of work, including as a writer, photographer, and editor, and as the Criminal Records Manager and dispatch trainer for the Unama'ki Tribal Police. Now Moose Management Coordinator for UINR (Unama'ki Institute for Natural Resources), Clifford's other passion is creating jewelry through his business BearMan Authentics.EPISODE RESOURCES:Unama'ki Institute for Natural Resources (UINR)A CBC Article (Jan.,/22) about Two-eyed seeingArticle by Dr. Shelley Denny “Herring Study Confirms Mi'kmaq Observation”Elder Voices podcast

After an argument with her sister, a conversation with her mom, and being picked up by two men to go to a party… Larissa was never seen again. This mother of one, has had little to no attention to her case. Brian Markinson's filmography is populated by meanies, baddies, ne'er-do-wells, and other assorted characters who live in morally ambiguous zones in shows like The Romeo Section, Mad Men, Continuum, Arctic Air, and The Killing, and films like Shooter, The Curse of the Jade Scorpion, and Charlie Wilson's War. He can currently be seen starring opposite Jessica Matten in Tribal, the second season of which began airing on APTN and APTN Lumi in October. Tribal stars Jessica as Sam Woodburn, a young Indigenous woman who is appointed Chief of Tribal Police in the wake of a corruption scandal and finds herself forced to partner with Buke (played by Brian), a grizzled, racist, angry white cop from the nearby Metropolitan Police Force. In this fascinating and thoughtful episode, Brian talks about Tribal's darker second season, the ways in which playing bad guys is fun, his work in Family Law and an upcoming project about the opioid crisis, and how art can help us heal from the wounds of this tumultuous age. WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court ruled Tuesday that tribal police officers can stop and search non-Indians on tribal lands for potential violations of state or federal law. The justices unanimously reversed an appellate ruling in favor of a non-Native motorist who was charged with drug-related crimes after a tribal officer searched his pickup truck on a public road that crosses the Crow reservation in Montana.

Brian Markinson returns to the YVR Screen Scene Podcast to talk about his latest role: that of Buke on the APTN series Tribal. Tribal premiered on APTN on February 20 and is showrunner Ron E. Scott's first outing after his critically acclaimed Blackstone concluded in 2015. Tribal stars Jessica Matten as Sam Woodburn, a young Indigenous woman who is appointed Chief of Tribal Police in the wake of a corruption scandal and finds herself forced to partner with Buke, a grizzled, racist, angry white cop from the nearby Metropolitan Police Force. Tribal is entertaining, but given the current climate – where the relationship between the Canadian government and First Nations people is strained, and where earnest ideas about reconciliation seems like a distant memory – it's also important. In this thought-provoking and at times joyful episode, Brian talks about what drew him to Buke, and opines on how a show like Tribal can move conversations around reconciliation, privilege, and decolonization forward. Alex White Plume was born on the Pine Ridge Reservation. He grew up strongly connected to traditional Lakota culture. He joined the U.S. Army and was stationed in Berlin until his enlistment ended in 1978. After returning to Pine Ridge, he lived in the Manderson. At that time, he joined the Tribal Police as an officer. White Plume's interest in socio-political issues developed later in life. Alex served as the former vice president and president of the Oglala Sioux Tribe of the Pine Ridge Reservation, located on South Dakota of the United States. He served as president from June 30, 2006 to November 2006 after Cecilia Fire Thunder was impeached. From 2000 to 2002, he earned unwanted publicity when United States federal drug agents raided his farm and destroyed his crop of industrial hemp before he could harvest it for seed as intended. They got a court order prohibiting him to grow the crop. Although the Oglala Sioux have sovereignty on their land and hemp does not have psychoactive properties, the agents operated under a 1968 federal anti-drug law prohibiting the cultivation of Cannabis-related crops. In 2019, Alex White Plume created the first Native American hemp product in the world and was the only hemp farmer in South Dakota. Alex White Plume is a legend, a myth, and a well respected elder of the Oglala Lakota. I will be speaking to Chris who was with the Indian tribal police for many years. Indian tribal police are peace officers hired by those Native American tribes which have a constitutional government on reservations, as opposed to hereditary chiefs. I spoke to him yesterday and he is going to come on the show and talk about some of the calls he received while on duty regarding Sasquatch. Chris still investigates reports today and is going to share some of those encounter stories as well. I will also be speaking to the father of the son who had an encounter just a few weeks ago. His son is still upset over the encounter below and who can blame him. The report goes as follows: "My 15 year old son and his friend had left the camp to head down to the lake. As they were standing by the lake they heard something come down off of the ridge-line, my son turned around and was about 30 feet away from what he describes as an ape. The boys came running into camp, both white as ghosts. My son and his friend demanded that we leave. They were both in shock and shaking. I was finally able to calm them down enough to have them explain what happen. The boys said as they turned around they saw this HUGE thing staring at them. My son said it was taller then the basketball player Lebron James. Its head was round like a watermelon, his nose was flat and wide. The jaw on the creature was really wide, It was built like a bodybuilder. The creature was massive and ape-like in appearance. The boys said this thing just stood there starring at them. What has me puzzled is we have seen bear, cougar and the normal wildlife but both boys said it was ape-like.They were both terrified and shaking. After seeing the boys reaction and how upset both boys still are I really think they saw something. My son says he doesn't want to ever go in the woods again and wishes he would have never seen it."
