Continuing with the artistic theme, this episode focuses on visual power of the protest banner. Lucy and Lee talk to campaigner Susan Alexander, whose son Azelle Rodney, an unarmed Black man, was fatally shot by a Met Police officer just a week after his 24th birthday. Susan talks about the heavy toll of state failures on her and her family and how art is both a tonic for grief and a tool for community campaigning. Susan commissioned a banner in memory of Azelle, in his favourite colour blue, to take along to United Friends and Families Campaign marches, which memorialise lost loved ones. She tells Lucy and Lee about the banner — made by trade union and protest banner-making extraordinaire Ed Hall — and the impact it has on her and others when carrying it on the marches. Unusually for this show, which normally focuses on long departed historical figures, today we're going to talk about someone who's still very much in the news. Until last week, she was the Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, London's police force, and was the first woman and the first LBGTQ person to hold the rank, Dame Cressida Dick. Today, part two of two: we discuss Dick's tenure at the Metropolitan Police, the extrajudicial murder of Jean Charles de Menezes, Dick's cynical deployment of her identity to deflect critique, the spy cops scandal, the botched investigation into gay serial killer Stephen Port, the Met's dismal record on race, and the protests that finally forced Dick out. ----more---- SOURCES: Ramzy Alwakeel, “I Covered Stephen Port's Murders. As podcasters, we have a platform and duty to speak up and call out injustice. In light of the murder of George Floyd, we have come together in solidarity to use our platform to speak up against racial injustice and amplify the voices of black podcasters that deserve more recognition. Racism is prevalent in all industries; from the media who under-report on black victims to the justice system which routinely fails black victims. In this collaborative episode, we document black history and current events with the voices of those who have lived through it. Being a mother is an attitude, not Biology. That is our tagline and that's what this entire episode is about. SHARI WALKER is a former foster youth who entered the foster care system at age fourteen. She talks about different mothering she received from her birth mom (Bio Mom) and "the first person who wasn't being paid to be with her" (her Heart Mom) after she aged out of the foster care system. Shari graduated from California State University Northridge, where she majored in African American Studies with an emphasis on Social Science. She is in currently obtaining her Master of Social Work at the USC and continues to write and produce theater and poetry that brings awareness surrounding the transitional experiences after leaving foster care. Shari is currently a part of an ensemble theater performance directed by Kathleen Rubin called "It's Just My Life" where she was able to write "Heart Mom, Bio Mom" during the creative writing workshops. Her one-woman show production to bring awarenesses about youth transitioning out of care entitled Sugar-Free: Foster Care Cognitive Dissonance was selected to receive one of the 2019 Hollywood Fringe Festival scholarships. Shari Walker is a renowned keynote speaker and spoken word artist within LA County and currently sits on the Leadership Corp for both The National Foster Youth Institute (NFYI) Homeless Action Committee, steered by board member and U.S. Representative Karen Bass, and the Alumni Empowerment Council, steered by members The United Friends of The Children. Shari hopes to combine her personal experience and current academia to create social change by spreading awareness through the creative arts for disconnected and transition age foster youth who are exiting care. If it's not 1 Thing, explores the topic of 'mother' from every angle imaginable and some you have not thought of. Each week, hosts Katie Mitchell and Lupe Padilla Mitchell share a new story and have great conversations with the writers, many of whom are in fact not writers by trade. We have excerpts from best selling novels, memoirs, poetry award winners, songwriters, stay at home moms, insurance brokers, teachers, actors, college students and beyond. Some famous. Some not at all. But they all have incredible tales to tell. Story is in our DNA. It's how we make sense of the world around us. We have so much to teach each other. Hola listeners! We're back another week with a new guest! This time we talked to Alma Tilghman. Alma can best be described by her Twitter profile: Matchmaker for corporate brands, non-profits and media outlets; advocate for #diversity #arts #film #TV. With life and career experience on both coasts; the bilingual and bicultural #superconnector is well-versed in the languages of Corporate America and the Arts. Leading up to her role as Principal for Paper Planes Collective, Alma honed her unique set of skills through 15 years’ experience in sales, advertising and event marketing, beginning with her B.A. in International-Intercultural Studies from Fordham University. She laid the foundation for her career during the iconic 90s hip-hop era in New York City, working with leading entertainment publications, The Source and Vibe Magazine. Learning first-hand from visionaries like Jay-Z, Damon Dash and Steve Rifkind how to take small independent brands and turn them into household names, Alma helped jumpstart the groundbreaking early runs of music labels Roc-A-Fella Records and Loud Records, home of the Wu-Tang Clan. As she kept pulse with the media landscape, Alma relocated to Los Angeles where she utilized her bilingual/bicultural/bi-coastal lifestyle to manage television advertising for clients like JP Morgan Chase, Ford, and Lexus in both the general and Hispanic markets, now regarded as the new multicultural mainstream. She also collaborated with Apple to create Campus MovieFest Mexico, Mexico’s first—and largest—student film festival. Recently, Alma partnered with The National Association of Latino Independent Producers (NALIP) to secure strategic sponsorships for their annual Media Summit, and she was instrumental in producing the nationally televised ALMA Awards, the annual excellence awards of The National Council of La Raza (NCLR), the nation’s largest Hispanic civil rights organization. The Los Angeles native serves on the advisory board for Latino Reel, a non-profit promoting Latino film at the Sundance Film Festival. She also volunteers time for United Friends of the Children, an at risk-youth program in South L.A. Our conversation was awesome, Alma shared her experience growing up as a first-generation Mexican-American and how she always made sure to follow her dreams and her love of Hip-Hop. As an entrepreneur, Alma shares some of the lessons she's learned as well as some tips to stay organized.
