Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police in London

The police just follow the law, right!? Our guest Melayna Lamb thinks we need to flip this thinking around - and see the police as a law unto themselves. Using the example of the very cursed ‘thin blue line' police badge, Melayna challenges the police's foundational idea that they are the ‘thin blue line between order and chaos'. What happens if - as we have seen on multiple occasions - it is the police who are a danger to the public and not the other way around. Expect discussions of the worst police merch you've ever seen, 90s sitcom The Thin Blue Line ft. Rowan Atkinson, kettling, colonial boomerangs, and yes, somehow we've managed to get Walter Benjamin in there too. Melayna's investigated the relationship between the police and law in her co-authored book Policing the Pandemic - How Public Health Becomes Public Order, and in her brand new book A Philosophical History of Police Power, out with Bloomsbury now. “We've got a government that's trying to gaslight the whole nation to say that racism doesn't exist.” As the third Black woman ever to be elected as an MP, and then instated as a government Minister, Dawn Butler has been vocal on the disrespect that Black women face in politics. As an outspoken campaigner herself, Butler was criticised in 2019 for calling Boris Johnson a liar in the House of Commons. She was subsequently asked to leave the Parliament grounds that day. Whilst calling for the former Met Commissioner, Cressida Dick, to resign, she ironically found herself being stopped by the police whilst driving with her friend (who is also Black). After facing a long battle with breast cancer in 2021, she found inspiration to write her first book, ‘A Purposeful Life', where she draws on the repeated times she's been called a liar after facing racism and sexism both in politics and outside of it. In today's episode of Ways to Change the World, Labour MP Dawn Butler speaks to Krishnan Guru-Murthy about calling Boris Johnson a liar in Parliament, white feminism in the Labour party (and at large) and her ambitions to be the next Mayor of London. Being a Black person in a white-dominated space, she also tells us why wearing a lime-green suit in a sea of grey-suits was her way of realising you don't have to fit in.
Can Sadiq Khan really clean up London? From the Met to the air, the Mayor of London has a tough road ahead of him. He speaks to Andrew Harrison to discuss his new book: Breathe and plans to tackle the climate crisis, the controversial ULEZ expansion and how a boy from Tooting ends up a fan of Liverpool FC. “We don't want money from the ULEZ. We want people walking, cycling or using public transport.” “As Mayor I chose to tackle climate issues, Boris Johnson chose to bury his head in the sand.” “Cressida Dick didn't have a credible plan to address issues in the MET. ” Support us on Patreon: www.patreon.com/bunkercast You can purchase Sadiq's book here: https://www.penguin.co.uk/books/452035/breathe-by-khan-sadiq/9781529152784 Written and presented by Andrew Harrison. It's been a week they would rather forget for the Met.A YouGov poll found that the majority of Londoners think the force is sexist and racist. There's been the appalling story of a 15-year-old black school girl in Hackney who was strip searched whilst on her period, without adult supervision. And all this is happening whilst the selection of a new Met commissioner is on hold until Cressida Dick's pay-off is sorted out. Emma Loffhagen is a columnist from the Evening Standard. She explains what the new commissioner will need to do to improve public opinion and whether or not it's possible to build back trust in the Met. Today we talk about:Emma's reaction to the 15-year-old girl who was strip searched (1:07)Is the Met fit for purpose? The Metropolitan Police by officer numbers, is the largest in the United Kingdom by a significant margin, and one of the biggest in the world. They consist of the 32 London boroughs, protects 164 foreign embassies and High Commissions, polices London City and Heathrow airports as well as Westminster. However, the Met has been plagued with accusations of institutional racism, misogyny and corruption. The Met saw even more criticism when Cressida Dick the former Commissioner was forced to resign due to lack of confidence from the London Mayor and citizens, but some people would argue this came much later than it ever should have and with the countless other scandals emerging from the force, is it time for major reform? Is enough being done? Not from where we're looking.

Unusually for this show, which normally focuses on long departed historical figures, today we're going to talk about someone who's still very much in the news. Until last week, she was the Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, London's police force, and was the first woman and the first LBGTQ person to hold the rank, Dame Cressida Dick. Today, part two of two: we discuss Dick's tenure at the Metropolitan Police, the extrajudicial murder of Jean Charles de Menezes, Dick's cynical deployment of her identity to deflect critique, the spy cops scandal, the botched investigation into gay serial killer Stephen Port, the Met's dismal record on race, and the protests that finally forced Dick out. ----more---- SOURCES: Ramzy Alwakeel, “I Covered Stephen Port's Murders. Nuacht Mhall. Príomhscéalta na seachtaine, léite go mall. * Inniu an dara lá déag de mhí Feabhra. Is mise Niall Ó Siadhail. Deirtear go bhfuil Uachtarán Stáit Aontaithe Mheiriceá, Joe Biden, chun ordú forghníomhaithe a shíniú a scaoilfidh seacht mbilliún dollar de chúlchiste Afganastánach. D'fhág rialtas daonlathach deireanach na hAfganastáine an t-airgead i mbanc an Chúlchiste Fheidearálaigh i Nua-Eabhrac agus tá sé calctha ó shin i leith mar ní raibh sé soiléir cé leis an t-airgead. Anois, ceaptar go roinnfear an t-airgead idir íospartaigh sceimhlitheoireachta i Meiriceá, mar shampla daoine muinteartha leo siúd a fuair bás san Ionad Trádála Domhanda in 2001, agus daoine leochaileacha san Afganastáin féin – fad is nach mbeidh an Talaban ábalta lámh a leagan air. D'fhógair Cressida Dick go mbeidh sí ag éirí as a post mar Choimisinéir na bPóilíní i Londain i ndiaidh do Mhéara Londan Sadiq Khan insint di nach bhfuil muinín aige aisti. Cé gurb í Dick an chéad bhean riamh sa ról, tharla go leor scannal le déanaí a nochtann cultúr nimhiúil san fhórsa maidir le gnéasachas agus ciníochas. Dhúnmharaigh oifigeach de chuid an fhórsa Sarah Everard beagnach bliain ó shin, agus cáineadh an fórsa go minic as an dóigh a caitheadh le mná. Roinn oifigigh eile grianghraif de dheirfiúracha a dúnmharaíodh i bpáirc i dtuaisceart Londan. Bhí Dick ina ceannasaí nuair a maraíodh Jean Charles de Menezes in 2005. Fuair an Bhrasaíleach óg bás mar cheap na póilíní gur sceimhlitheoir a bhí ann, rud a bhí go hiomlán bréagach. Cúrsaí scannánaíochta anois. Fuair roinnt Éireannach ainmniúchán do ghradam Oscar an tseachtain seo. Ainmníodh Ciarán Hinds ó Bhéal Feirste Thuaidh agus Jessie Buckley ó Chill Airne sa chatagóir “aisteoir tacaíochta is fearr” agus an t-amhrán “Down To Joy” leis an cheoltóir conspóideach Van Morrison sa chatagóir “amhrán nua is fearr”. Fuair an scannán Belfast, ina léirítear tús na dTrioblóidí trí shúile buachalla óig, seacht n-ainmniúchán san iomlán, “script scannáin nua is fearr”, “scannán is fearr” agus “stiúrthóir is fearr” san áireamh, agus ciallaíonn sé sin go bhfuil ainmniúcháin ag Kenneth Branagh i níos mó catagóirí ná aon duine eile, cé nár bhain sé Oscar go fóill. Ar an drochuair, níor éirigh le Ruth Negga ná Caitríona Balfe ainmniúchán a fháil. Dúirt an t-iriseoir Malachy Clerkin gur léir go bhfuil claonadh frith-Mhuineacháin ag an Acadamh. * Léirithe ag Conradh na Gaeilge i Londain. Tá script ar fáil i d'aip phodchraolta. * GLUAIS ordú forghníomhaithe - executive order cúlchiste - reserve (of money) calctha - frozen (of funds) gnéasachas - sexism sceimhlitheoir - terrorist conspóideach - controversial claonadh frith-Mhuineacháin - anti-Monaghan bias

The head of London's Metropolitan Police, Cressida Dick, said she is resigning Thursday after a string of controversies that undermined public confidence in the force and prompted a falling out between her and the capital's mayor.Mayor Sadiq Khan had recently threatened to oust Dick from her role, saying she wasn't doing enough to reform the Metropolitan Police, Britain's largest police force, and tackle growing accusations of misogyny and racism within her ranks.Khan said late Thursday it was clear the only way to overhaul the force urgently was to have "new leadership right at the top of the Metropolitan Police.”Dick, who has headed the force since 2017 and is the first woman to lead Scotland Yard, said it was with “huge sadness” that it has become clear that Khan "no longer has sufficient confidence in my leadership to continue.”“He has left me no choice but to step aside as Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Service,” she said in a statement.Dick, 61, added that she will stay in her role for a short period to ensure the force's stability while a replacement is found.A report last week by the Independent Office for Police Conduct, the police watchdog, condemned misogyny, bullying, discrimination and sexual harassment among a dozen officers, most of them based in central London's Charing Cross police station. The report cited officers joking about rape and using other offensive language in social media messages, and said the incidents were part of a wider culture that can't be blamed on a few “bad apples.”Khan said last week he was “not satisfied” with Dick's response to calls for change following scandals including the killing of a woman by a serving police officer and the behavior of officers cited by the police watchdog.“Last week, I made clear to the Metropolitan Police Commissioner the scale of the change I believe is urgently required to rebuild the trust and confidence of Londoners in the Met and to root out the racism, sexism, homophobia, bullying, discrimination and misogyny that still exists," Khan said.He thanked Dick for her 40 years of policing service.Dick faced intense pressure to quit last year after a police officer, Wayne Couzens, was convicted of kidnapping, raping and murdering a woman, Sarah Everard, who was walking home at night in London. Everard's slaying by a serving officer shocked the nation, and the police force's subsequent handling of vigils and protests against Everard's slaying also came under heavy fire.Dick acknowledged Thursday that the Everard case and others had “damaged confidence” in her force.- By Sylvia Hui, Associated Press

In our eighth episode, Alma-Constance tells Lucinda that she was shocked to find out that she has reached the age of criminal responsibility at just 10 years old and wanted to find out why we need a criminal justice system and how does it affect children. Their guest for this episode is the person who calls themselves the Secret Barrister, who is a junior barrister specialising in criminal law, and author and blogger. The Secret Barrister does not want to reveal their identity in public and wants to be able explain the law plainly so people can understand how it affects us all. Their words were read out by Alice Acland to keep their voice anonymous. In our previous interviews with Max Hill and Cressida Dick we have heard that very few children get caught up in crime, but of course when they do it can have very serious consequences for them and has a huge impact on their lives and their family. Some people find it confusing that someone accused of a crime should be allowed to have a lawyer defending them. But this is a very important principle that everyone is entitled to a fair hearing especially when it is the state, the government who is prosecuting them and they have resources to do this, and the consequences can be so serious. You can find more about The Secret Barrister on their blog: https://thesecretbarrister.comThe Secret Barrister's first book and Sunday Times No.1 Bestseller, “Stories of The Law and How It's Broken”, was published by Pan Macmillan in March 2018, and was in the top-ten bestseller list for over a year. Their new book, “Fake Law”, was published by Picador in September 2020.Alma-Constance and Lucinda would love to hear from you!
