Then we move on to Mr. Crocket (2024). Finally we review Apartment 7A (2024). 'Salem's Lot is a 2024 American supernatural horror film written and directed by Gary Dauberman, based on the 1975 novel by Stephen King. The film stars Lewis Pullman, Makenzie Leigh, Alfre Woodard, John Benjamin Hickey, Bill Camp, Jordan Preston Carter, Nicholas Crovetti, Spencer Treat Clark, William Sadler, and Pilou Asbæk. It is the first feature film adaptation of the book, preceded by miniseries versions from 1979 and 2004. The plot centers on a writer who returns to his hometown of Jerusalem's Lot in search of inspiration, only to discover the presence of a vampire. The film was announced in 2019 and shot in 2021, with additional photography in 2022. The film's release was delayed multiple times. 'Salem's Lot had its world premiere as the opening film at the Beyond Fest on September 25, 2024, and was released on Max on October 3, 2024. The film received mixed reviews from critics. Mr. Crocket, directed by Brandon Espy, is a horror film that debuted on Hulu on October 11, 2024, as part of its "Huluween" lineup. The movie, set in 1993, follows a mother's terrifying quest to rescue her son from a demonic children's show host, Mr. Crocket, who kidnaps children and brutally murders their parents. Originally developed from a short film created for Hulu's Bite Size Halloween series, the full-length feature was written by Espy and Carl Reid. It taps into 90s nostalgia with its VHS aesthetic and chilling supernatural elements. Apartment 7A is a 2024 American psychological thriller film directed by Natalie Erika James from a screenplay she co-wrote with Christian White and Skylar James. It serves as a prequel to Rosemary's Baby (1968). Julia Garner, Dianne Wiest, Jim Sturgess, and Kevin McNally star. This week, Mark Tilley returns to the pod to help us discuss Peter Weir's final film, The Way Back, the ostensibly true story of an escape from a Siberian gulag and the long march to freedom. We can't agree if this movie is any good or not, but we can agree that flash in the pan star Jim Sturgess has nothing on Colin's scene stealing Russian gangster. Along the way, we're talking Ed Harris, we're talking Saorise Ronan, and we're arguing over what this movie's politics are. Cole thinks people are pretending to like Master & Commander. This week the GBGBs bring on friend of the show RYAN (a separate Ryan from our current Ryan) to review GEOSTORM. This 2017 film starring Gerard Butler and Jim Sturgess makes you stop and think, "why was this movie made in 2017 and not during the great disaster boom of the mid 00s?"    With the world threatened by the effects of climate change, Gerard Butler is the lead scientist in the creation of "Dutch Boy": a globe-spanning satellite net that uses lasers and weather missiles to control the Earth's climate. But *record scratch* it seems like sabotage is afoot when Dutch Boy mysteriously creates a series of disastrous weather patterns in specific portions of the world.    We had some interesting reactions to this one, including one of us who was willing to take a stand and defend it from the critics. Thanks for stopping by!

Aaron and Josh Sarnecky are here for their latest movie retrospective. This time they're talking about 10th anniversary of Cloud Atlas. Cloud Atlas is a science fiction film directed by Tom Tykwer, Lana Wachowski, and Lilly Wachowski. The movie is based on the novel by David Mitchell. It opened in theaters on October 26, 2012. The film charts the journey of reincarnated souls throughout time. Locations include 1970s San Francisco, present day London, and Seoul in the far future. The ensemble cast features Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Bae Doona, Ben Whishaw, Jim Sturgess, Jim Broadbent, and Hugo Weaving. The film polarized critics and audiences. Roger Ebert gave the film 4 out of 4 stars, while Village Voice named it the worst film of 2012. Financed through independent sources, the film was not a box office success, only making $130 million on an approximately $100 million budget. Josh and Aaron discuss the movie's ambition, the different storylines, and how it compares to the Wachowskis' other films. For another podcast, you can listen to Aaron and Josh talk about Spirited Away. Cloud Atlas is available to rent on Prime Video and Apple TV. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Themes develop within this week's movie reviews. Funny how that happens without even trying sometimes but Erik Childress and Steve Prokopy wade through seven movies this week. It all begins with an emotionally unsettling film they have been championing since Sundance featuring another knockout performance by Rebecca Hall and a never creepier Tim Roth (Resurrection). Steve checks out Juliette Binoche as a trucker who gets involved in child trafficking (Paradise Highway) while Erik covers Angourie Rice as an overachieving high schooler trying to sabotage her competition (Honor Society). Zoey Deutsch is an underachieving photo editor who tries to manipulate a fresh grief hashtag in a new satire (Not Okay) and Katie Holmes and Jim Sturgess are forced to white-people-problem their way through the start of the Covid pandemic (Alone Together). Steve also looks at the new animated effort from the other comic book studio (DC League of Super Pets). Finally, the pair heap praise upon the writing/directing effort from B.J. Novak that is certainly one of the strongest surprises of the year.   0:00 - Intro 2:35 - Resurrection 15:23 – Paradise Highway 23:55 - Honor Society 33:04 - Alone Together 44:16 – Not Okay 1:00:47 - DC League of Super Pets 1:09:42 - Vengeance 1:29:10 - Outro

Across The Universe was a 2007 romantic drama/jukebox musical film directed by Julie Taymor, and featured starring roles from Evan Rachel Wood, Jim Sturgess, and Joe Anderson, with cameo appearances from Bono, Salma Hayek, Eddie Izzard, and Joe Cocker, among others. The movie follows a loose plot involving romance blossoming during the height of protests against the war in Vietnam, set against a musical backdrop of Beatles songs. Critics were unimpressed by Across The Universe's razor-thin plot, but offered heavy praise to its visual sequences and performances, and it would become a major commercial success. On a new episode of Hell Is A Musical, Lilz and Scott welcome Malorie Savran to the podcast to attempt to make sense of Across The Universe. "There are whole movements I wrote, imagining us meeting again and again, in different lives, different ages..." The time has come, we're finally covering the Wachowskis. Directed by Lana & Lilly Wachowski and Tom Tykwer (Run Lola Run, Perfume) Cloud Atlas is... well... what is it? Over to you Letterboxd description! "A set of six nested stories spanning time between the 19th century and a distant post-apocalyptic future. Cloud Atlas explores how the actions and consequences of individual lives impact one another throughout the past, the present and the future. Action, mystery and romance weave through the story as one soul is shaped from a killer into a hero and a single act of kindness ripples across centuries to inspire a revolution in the distant future." Exactly, that was on the tip of my tongue. Featuring Halle Berry, Tom Hanks, Jim Sturgess, Ben Whishaw, Doona Bae, Jim Broadbent, James D'Arcy, Hugo Weaving, Hugh Grant, Susan Sarandon, Keith David and a ton of yellow face, the epic sag sees each actor apply significant amount of prosthetics and their best stab at accents to reappear as different characters in timelines, race and gender be damned. Landing on both Best and Worst lists on its release, Cloud Atlas has always been polarising. The question is, where do the Mixed Bag crew land?

Everyday Rockstar (0:00:00)Lisa and Richie feature this week's Everyday Rockstar. We want to feature you! You can nominate yourself or someone you love by emailing thelisashow@byu.edu with “Everyday Rockstar” in the subject line.  How our Diets Affect the Environment (0:04:31)We Americans can sometimes be wasteful with our food. According to the USDA, it's been estimated that we waste about 40% of our national food supply every year, which equals out to about 133 billion pounds of food. You may be thinking, so what if some of my food goes to waste? I eat most of it! But it can have some serious environmental impacts. Joining us today is Kathryn Kellogg, founder of lifestyle website Going Zero Waste, to discuss how we can be more eco-friendly in our food consumption.  Turning the Tide on Ocean Loss (0:14:10)One place has recently become home to over five trillion pieces of plastic, but it's not a recycling plant, or even a landfill. It's the ocean. Our oceans hold some of our most valuable resources, and yet, each year they get a little closer to destruction due to pollution, overfishing, and the extinction of marine life. It's hard to feel like you're able to make a difference when you're just one person and the ocean is thousands of miles wide and thousands of feet deep. So we invited Cristina Mittermeier, a conservation photographer, often featured on National Geographic, and one of the founders of SeaLegacy. She joins us to share her insights into how we can help save our oceans.  Fighting for Forests (0:26:19)The rate of deforestation is shocking—we're losing approximately 27 soccer fields of forest per minute, which adds up to 18.7 MILLION acres of forested land lost each year. I feel like the importance of our planet's forests is something we all kinda get, but it's a hard concept for me to fully wrap my brain around. This is an important discussion for us to have, because if we don't truly understand a problem that's this big, why would we feel motivated to help? To help, we've invited Kerry Cesareo onto the show to answer our questions today. Kerry is the Senior Vice President of the World Wildlife Fund's Forest department .  The Science of Climate Change (0:34:57)Whenever you hear someone talk about “Climate Change” you might wonder if it's actually as dire as they say. You've heard people argue both sides on YouTube and the news. You've heard multiple opinions about how severe the problem is. And you've always heard people reference “scientific experts”, but who are these so-called climate experts and what do they really have to say about all of this? Well, allow us to introduce you to one. Dr. Michael Mann is a distinguished Professor of Atmospheric Science at Penn State and the author of several books on climate change. His work has been a vital part in proving the severity of the earth's rising temperature to people and politicians since 2001.  Enjoying the Environment (0:44:33)We all care about climate change in different degrees. Maybe you're doing everything you can to help preserve our planet but are struggling to get your friends on board. Or maybe you love the earth but have never felt motivated to get off the sideline and actually make changes. So, if the science and facts we read about aren't enough to change anyone's behavior towards the environment, what will? Maybe the key is to spend more time in the nature we are trying to save. Joining us today is Michael Brune, the executive director for the Sierra Club . The Sierra Club is the most influential grassroots, environmental organization in the United States, and they motivate people to get outside and enjoy the benefits of nature.  Helping Animal Shelters (0:50:38)While our pets are enjoying the extra attention from everyone being home so often right now, there are many pets that don't have a home that are requiring some extra attention. Many animal shelters have had to close their doors right now, but that doesn't mean that the animals they're housing have stopped needing help. So, what can we do to help out our furry friends? Here to share some of her tips with us, is Holly Sizemore, Chief Mission Officer of the Best Friends Animal Society.  Finances in Marriage (1:09:26)One of the top stressors that contributes to divorce today is finances. Dealing with debt and other financial difficulties puts a strain on marriages and leads to a lot of blaming rather than problem-solving. With this looming fact in the air, we wanted go get some expert advice on what couples can do better when handling money so they can eliminate stress and keep their marriages together. Our next guest, Rachel Cruze, is a #1 New York Times best-selling author and host of The Rachel Cruze Show where she helps people learn the proper ways to handle money and stay out of debt. She joins us today to talk about how we can improve our finances for the sake of our marriages.  Home Before Dark (1:28:37)As we continue to be encouraged to social distance, it feels like we are in constant need of new shows to binge. Finding appropriate and uplifting programs that the whole family can sit down and enjoy together can be challenging. Luckily, Apple TV+ just released a family-friendly mystery thriller called “ Home Before Dark ” that we can stream now. Here to tell us all about this new show is Brooklyn Prince and Jim Sturgess.
