The Grown-Ass Woman's Guide will be back in January with all new episodes! Until then, enjoy this “Best of” episode created just for you.  Have a very happy holiday season and I'll talk with you in January! “Holiday stress is not something you get, it's something you create.” I wrote this little gem on Facebook eight years ago. Unlike other things I sometimes read from years ago, this time I actually agree with my younger self — wholeheartedly.I believe that, along with the incredible challenges we have faced over the last year and a half, we have also been provided with some clarity; clarity in what matters and what we should prioritize. After years and years of holiday stress rinse and repeat, we had an opportunity to streamline and to simplify. I know, for me, I'm not ready to go back to the way things were. How about you?Read full blog post here. Support the show

I'll add courageous woman, inspiring swimmer and badass mom to that description. A paralyzing car accident in her teens left Ryan with a new life to build. In her book, When I Grow Up I Want to Be a Chair,  Ryan shares a poignant message, "Everyone has a chair," that thing we are bound to or unwillingly defines you, an element that makes you different from the rest, one that you have little choice in the matter.  But it does not mean life is without choices.  Ryan's story is a series of choices that will surprise, inspire and motivate you to life your own life to the fullest. Support the show

Lauren, one of the co-hosts and resident interior designer, stood out to me at the time as someone who is very much, "what you see is what you get," something I definitely admire, especially in that industry.  Six plus years later, she's still that way. In this episode, Lauren shares:Her journey to sobriety, complete with twists and turns. What life looked like when she was drinking. In my first solo episode of the year, I share thanks to YOU -- my amazing listener. And reveal what you can expect from The Grown-Ass Woman's Guide in 2022. One of the things I do love to do in a new year is come up with a word (or words) that really encompass where I want to go during the year ahead. 2020 = CONNECT (ironic, isn't it?)2021 = CURIOSITY (when we come from a place of curiosity, there's less judgment of each other and ourselvesIn 2022, my friend Marion was talking about how she was doing three words and I really loved the ideas.  I did a little journaling and meditation and my three words popped into my head. ALIGN I don't want to be that person who just throws things against the wall to see if they stick or works with people or takes opportunities because they bring in income, but don't feel good. I want to do things that align with who I am right now and where I want to be, and so align is a really, really strong, positive word for me. SIMPLIFY There's so much noise out there. There are so many things we could be doing. I don't want to spend a ton of time doing  just for the sake of doing. Once I have aligned myself to what I want to do, I then want to simplify the steps.  I'm doing those things that "move the needle" bring results. SPARKLE Oh, my gosh, it's such a 12 year old girl word, Isn't it? But I love it so much. I'm done dimming my sparkle for those who might think I'm extra or too much. I would love to hear what your word or words are for this year. It's the premiere episode of The Grown-Ass Woman's Guide! Let's dive in, shall we? In a recent poll, 100 Grown-Ass women were asked: “How often do you feel like you're not enough in one or more areas of your life?”The answer may surprise you. But what's even more important is WHY we feel like we're not enough and what we can do about it. In this episode, you'll hear from therapist Melody Murray who provides some key insight Plus,  learn five simple ways to feel more enough that's worked for me and so many other grown-ass women.Identify the area or areas in which you feel like you're not enough.  If there are multiple, write them all down, but then we're going to pick one at a time to go through the process. Define what enough looks like in that area. What does it even mean?  What does it look like to be enough as a mom, in your job or a friendship? It really helps to define what it is that you think is enough so you can actually compare where you are and where you think you should be. Imagine someone you love, it could be your best friend, a sister, neighbor, maybe even a daughter.  Would you hold her to the same impossible standards you expect of yourself?  Would you judge her so harshly?  Or would you cut her some slack? What makes you so unique that you are expected to achieve some bogus level and be this person that you would never expect someone else to be?  Who is determining your enoughness or not enoughness? When we put our own value in the comments of other people, how can we  not feel  like we're not enough, especially when that person hasn't even gone through their own healing journey?  Spoiler alert: the person you should be listening to is you.5. Imagine for a moment that you are enough right now.  Just be quiet with yourself  and say, I am a human being doing the very best I can.  And that's enough. I  am enough.  How would your life look if you stopped and you reminded yourself every day just for five seconds, 10 seconds, 30 seconds, five minutes? Huge thanks to our sponsor! A love letter to you, the Forty Thrive listener. On December 12, 2018, I launched this show. No big team, just my awesome editors to help me. I produced over 100 episodes, talking with incredible experts, and other badass women over 40. Over those 20+ months, while I've done a lot of talking (like, A LOT) I've also been listening -- to you. I've heard what you love about the show, what you'd like more of -- even what you'd like less of. One of the challenges I've had since Day 1 was letting women know that Forty Thrive is NOT just for women in their 40s, it's for women over 40. So if you're in your 50s or 60s — or hell, even beyond that, this is for you, too. But if you have to explain something more than a couple of times, you might need to tweak your messaging. I learned not only the age of the woman listening, but who that woman really is.  She's someone who wants more out of life. She's a lifelong learner. She dares to dream. She knows this is the time to leap but is a little afraid of the idea… and even if she wanted to, HOW would she do it?She wants to take care of her shit. Like really wants to. But the self doubt creeps in… and she needs some support here. She cares less about what other people think and is starting to really tune into what her gut says. She's a GROWN-ASS WOMAN. And likely, she is YOU. Sure, the calendar says you're over 40. And that, to me, says something. It says we've lived a lot of life. We've got so much experience. But it's not just women over 40 that get me fired up, who turn to me for coaching and collaboration — it's GROWN-ASS women over 40. They're my spirit animals, for real. The past few years getting to help women find that spark inside of them and recommit to their own lives has been an honor. The fact that I get to do it for a living?

Now while you may not be familiar with transgender children or transgender issues and challenges, Paria's story is universal to any mom, really any human, who at one time believed that life would look one way until a bomb is completely dropped. Through Paria's story, you can feel her slowly begin to grow, find acceptance and express the unconditional love that was always within her. But it wasn't pretty and it wasn't easy. Of course this works!     About our guest:   Fumiko Takatsu (founder and CEO) of the Face Yoga Method brings her 15 years of practice and personal experience into the Revolutionary Pro-Aging Method that has been impacting thousands of lives, hers included!   Following a nearly fatal car accident that threw her hip, shoulder and head off-kilter, Fumiko developed what is today The Face Yoga Method. Why would you start to use cannabis at this age?! Before you judge, just listen. It could seriously change everything for you. We're not talking smokin' out under the bleachers here. Cannabis can be used to manage so many (peri)menopause symptoms and help you feel like yourself again -- without actually getting high. Meet Carrie Mapes and Patty Pappas, founders of Hello Again! They're busting cannabis myths and answering your questions. Carrie and Patty go way back – twenty years ago the duo met when their oldest children started preschool. Friends ever since, Carrie and Patty have always been adventurous and open-minded – but it wasn’t until they became empty nesters that they decided to explore local dispensaries. Quickly, they realized that cannabis was uniquely suited to address many of the challenges they experienced during menopause. Patty and Carrie searched for a single product geared to address these challenges, but there was nothing in sight. Naturally, their problem-solving instincts lead them to take matters into their own hands – by building their own product from the ground up. Cannabis. Vaginal. Suppository. Some might read those words and think “crazy talk”, but for Carrie and Patty these same words represent the future of women’s wellness. Carrie’s creativity combined with Patty’s attention to detail make them the perfect pair to spearhead a movement to educate women about menopause and the non-psychoactive use of cannabis for wellness at any age. Carrie and Patty founded Hello Again in 2019, after extensive research and development. The duo is committed to offering solutions for women to improve both mental and physical health and feel like themselves again. As Carrie and Patty say, their grandmother’s tolerated, their mothers medicated, and they CREATED. Hello Again! Related Episode: Cannabis and CBS as Midlife Medicine About Our Guests: Carrie Mapes is committed to helping women through the challenges of menopause. After struggling with memory fog and energy shortages, Carrie understands how confusing it can be to associate menopause with its symptoms. Through her creativity and relatability, she strives to reach women who face the challenges she once did - and to introduce these women to a product that can make them feel like themselves again. Carrie currently lives in Los Angeles with her husband and has two adult children. When not working at the intersection of cannabis and menopause, Carrie spends time developing her art. Patty Pappas aims to introduce a product that changed her life into the lives of women everywhere. After experiencing years of uncontrollable mood and temperature shifts, Patty started experimenting with cannabis products to tackle her menopause. Her knowledge of symptoms and personal encounters with relief practices have provided Patty with the expertise and vision for Hello Again. Patty is happiest with her husband George in Los Angeles, where they have raised their three daughters. There, she promotes women’s wellness by advocating for the use of natural products to address menopause. Connect with Hello Again on their website, on Instagram and Facebook.
