We are living in a time where people seemingly have deeply conflicting views. How can you have a conversation with someone who doesn't agree with you? How can you allow for the conflict that might ensue? Will you be understanding and compassionate? Or do you just walk away? Lisa continues the conversation today with author and therapist Carolyn Sharp, who assures us that it is possible to find common ground. She also shares ways to handle being triggered, if conversations get heated. Carolyn asks us to consider our values. It's a matter of alignment and feeling safe. She explains that it's better to be proactive in our relationships. Care, respect, and curiosity are all keys to better communication. She also discusses how to set boundaries if things are going in a toxic direction. We must be confident in our boundaries. We need to first understand ourselves and our limits, then we can be clear with others. Carolyn is both a therapist and coach, who works with individuals as well as couples. She has been trained by relationship expert Stan Tatkin, founder of the PACT Institute. She talks about how you know whether to repair a damaged relationship. She believes almost any problem in a relationship, except for abuse, can be fixed and eventually healed, as long as the individuals want it to work out for the best. It takes constant care, and can be challenging, yet relationships offer us the biggest opportunities for growth! Info: CarolynSharp.com and SecureConnectionsRetreats.com

How can you have a conversation with someone who has differing views than you do? How can you allow for the conflict that might ensue? Can you be understanding and compassionate? Or do you walk away? According to our guest today, author, therapist, and relationship expert Carolyn Sharp, there are ways to handle being triggered. This is a normal and natural response when we feel fear. If we can soften, it will ease the trigger, and we can begin to feel calmer. Carolyn explains that if we learn to be curious, rather than judgmental, we can get through these intense moments. When we stay focused on just the facts, we disconnect from the curiosity. We can feel misunderstood and not heard. We can feel that people are not respecting us. This is prevalent in our country and especially missing culturally now. We all want to be understood and recognized. For example, many people may disagree about how the government wants to enforce judgements and control the narrative. We must create space to talk about things in a safe way. Make it safe for both sides. It's a matter of acknowledging and not judging. If someone feels wrong, it erodes compassion. This can lead to violence and lack of safety. Carolyn also discusses her recent book, “Fire It Up: Reigniting Intimacy and Joy in Your Relationship” and how she wrote it for couples and people in relationships. It's about compassionate communication. She addresses various aspects of couples including what to do when one lies or even is unfaithful. She talks about how lying is extraordinarily common in relationships, especially during the courtship phase. As an example, someone may ask, “How do you like the dinner I cooked?” and the other person may feel the need to be overly complimentary, even if they dislike it. She talks about a culture where people feel safe enough to be completely honest. If we continue with “white lies” we eventually stop recognizing that we are lying. In this Age of Social Media, we are experiencing general people, who are not trained journalists, reporting what they believe is fact. People are stating opinions and claiming it as fact. This becomes very hard for us to decipher and can lead to major disagreements. Carolyn also talks about the importance of investing in your relationships, and specifically with your partner. She addresses if someone in the partnership cheats and how traumatic it can be.  If the other person is not hearing you, it's important to decide if it's healthy to stay in the relationship. If it's in a situation with co-workers or with your boss, you may need to just “agree to disagree.” We are not able to change others. We can only change ourselves. Fighting doesn't allow for this opportunity. In politics and such a divided nation, it's challenging to acknowledge one another. It is impacting many aspects of our lives. Many people feel betrayed and hurt. We are living in an intense time, and Carolyn suggests getting support around your feelings. These are complicated times, but there are ways to de-escalate and disengage. Everyone has to decide what they need in their relationships. You can value the other person's support yet not agree with them. It's better to be honest and respectful and see if you can come to a place of radical acceptance. Why do kids freak out, and how can adults guide them through it without just saying, "Stop it?” Dr. Carla Naumburg, clinical social worker and author of How to Stop Losing Your Shit with Your Kids, joins Gabe Howard to unpack the science of emotional outbursts. Learn the surprising reasons behind freak-outs, how to manage them with humor (learn about acronyms FART and BuRP), and why telling kids to calm down often backfires. This episode is packed with practical advice for parents, teachers, and anyone who works with kids, helping them navigate tough moments with empathy and skill. “Let's say you are a kid and you have a parent who stays 100% perfect and calm and smiley and always gives you what you want. When you go out in the real world, you're not going to be able to deal with life at all because that's never going to be recreated, right? And so, when your parent loses their temper with you from time to time, packs you a lunch you don't like, forgets to pick you up at school and you're left there for half an hour. When your parent does X, Y, and Z that are considered less than perfect parenting, what you learn is that people aren't perfect, and that's okay. That you can handle things not going the way you want, and you'll be okay. It actually makes kids more resilient.” ~Carla Naumburg, PhD To learn more -- or read the transcript -- please visit the episode webpage. Sometimes thinking makes things better. Sometimes thinking makes things hard.  The more we know about the brain, the more we can work together with it to fill our lives with great adventures that are more interesting and fun—in school and life. Episode 134. I am so incredibly grateful for this conversation. I'm especially grateful for Becca's knowledge and openness about their personal and professional experiences in this realm. I'm also so glad I live in a time when therapists can come on a podcast and be open about their personal experiences. What a freaking gift. Becca is a therapist who works primarily with high masking, late identified and late diagnosed autistic and ADHD people. This conversation is a 2-parter, filled with information, resources and interwoven with Becca's story of becoming a therapist and late diagnosis of ADHD and autism. You're going to love it. What to Expect in this Episode We cover the following: The work Becca does with clients, professional trainings and continuing education and how their non-linear path here The ways autism and ADHD are understood now, and how Becca has seen these understanding shift over the past few decades The true definition of neurodivergence What it means that autism is a dynamic disability Why we don't use the term Asperger's syndrome anymore And so much more! (Be sure to tune in next week for Part 2 where we dive into the harm that can be caused by therapists and others to those with Autism and ADHD, and how to avoid this, psychodrama, Becca's other creative joys, and so much more) Who is Becca Gibson Becca Gibson, LCSW-C, LICSW, is an Autistic and ADHD independent clinical social worker, as well as the founder and owner of Wired Differently Therapy, a private practice serving clients in the states of Maryland and Massachusetts. After spending years supporting disabled students in public school classrooms, Becca began a career in social work with a specialization helping neurodiverse couples, families, and neurodivergent individuals through a neurodiversity affirming lens. Becca's clinical work focuses on Autistics and ADHDers – especially those who are considered “gifted”, or “twice-exceptional” –  and the intersection of LGBTQIA+ identities and neurodivergence. In addition to their work as a therapist, Becca provides professional development training, clinical consultation, and clinical supervision. Definition of Neurodivergent Neurodivergent is an umbrella term. According to Nick Walker, neurodivergent refers to “having a mind that functions in ways which diverge significantly from the dominant societal standards of ‘normal.'”  Resources Mentioned YouTube ADHD training delivered by Becca Gibson: https://youtu.be/IcWMwK1aSvg?si=kaRlsD1Ysp8mAXnQ Matt Lowry's information about how he has reframed the DSM diagnostic criteria for autism to be more strengths-based Information on Autistic-Centered Therapy from KindTherapyandWellness.com Autistics are more likely to experience complex trauma, and to identify as alexithymic. Going No Contact, Relationship Recovery, and the NY Times: An interview with Patrick Teahan, LICSW Curt and Katie interview Patrick Teahan, LICSW after he was featured in an article on going no contact in the New York Times. We explored his experience of his work being sensationalized and the fallout from that article (and the string of duplicates). We also dug into how he actually works. We talked about the Relationship Recovery Process (RRP) and what it can look like when someone makes the challenging decision to cut off their family members. Transcripts for this episode will be available at mtsgpodcast.com! In this podcast episode, we talk with Patrick Teahan on his NY Times interview on Going No Contact We read and had a big response to a NY Times article on going no contact, reacting to the sensationalized portrayal of Patrick Teahan's work with adults who come from abusive families. After learning how he really works, we reached out to him to explore the impact of this article as well as what his model is for working with these individuals.  Reflecting on the NY Times Article: Is Cutting Off Your Family Good Therapy? ·      Patrick was interviewed due to his viral videos and online presence on YouTube ·      He talked with the interviewer about the process of Going No Contact and his work with childhood trauma survivors ·      He felt like the process took a turn into his personal story and then sensationalized his work ·      There were a number of duplicate articles (even in different countries) that led to misunderstanding of his work and hurting clients who have made the decision to go no contact with abusive family members What is RRP (the Relationship Recovery Process)? ·      Work to finishing business with family members ·      Reclaim intimacy ·      Group Psychotherapy focused on normalization of the experiences of survivors of abusive families and childhood trauma ·      The work can include individual work prior to joining the group ·      Late in the process (potentially years into the process) a client may make the decision to “get distance” from their family if they are not able to continue their healing process due to ongoing triggers and abuse ·      Patrick is doing research on the RRP model and will be publishing those results soon What is the process for Going No Contact with family members? ·      It is a very complex decision, usually after communication with family members has not led to any work on their part and repeated boundary crossings that make it impossible for a client to continue their work to heal ·      It is better to transparently and clearly communicate the decision to go no contact, rather than ghosting family members, when safe and possible ·      The decision to go no contact does not need to be total or permanent. Clients can seek space without making the decision to never talk to their family member again Stay in Touch with Curt, Katie, and the whole Therapy Reimagined #TherapyMovement: Our Linktree: https://linktr.ee/therapyreimagined Modern Therapist's Survival Guide Creative Credits: Voice Over by DW McCann https://www.facebook.com/McCannDW/ Music by Crystal Grooms Mangano https://groomsymusic.com/
