At the 2025 National Membership Meeting of Jewish Voice for Peace in Baltimore, MD, thousands of anti-Zionist Jews gathered to reaffirm their opposition to Israel's occupation of Palestine and ethnic cleansing of Palestinians—and to reject the antisemitic notion that the political ideology of Zionism represents all Jews. In this vital and wide-ranging discussion recorded during the JVP gathering in Baltimore, TRNN's Marc Steiner sits down with self-identified Palestinian Jews Esther Farmer and Ariella Aïsha Azoulay to discuss the complexities of Jewish identity and belonging today, the historical origins of Israel, and “the way that Zionism destroyed both Palestine and the diverse modes of Jewish life” that predate and reject the Zionist project.Ariella Aïsha Azoulay is a Palestinian Jew of African origins, film essayist, curator, and professor of modern culture and comparative literature at Brown University. She is the author of numerous books, including: Potential History: Unlearning Imperialism; The Civil Contract of Photography; and From Palestine to Israel: A Photographic Record of Destruction and State Formation, 1947-1950. Esther Farmer is a Palestinian Jew and native Brooklynite passionate about using theater as a tool for community development. She is former Ombudsman and Manager for the New York City Housing Authority, former United Nations representative for the International Association for Community Development and was an original founder of Teamsters for a Democratic Union. Traven Leyshon is president of the Green Mountain Central Labour Council and part of the leadership team of the Vermont State Labour Council. Traven, who has over five decades of labor organizing experience, talks to Steve about the pushback from national labor institutions against Vermont's newly elected progressive leadership and what it represents for the movement. The episode delves into the historical context of labor shrinkage and addresses the practical challenges of organizing in a neoliberal economy dominated by corporate money. He emphasizes the need for a participatory democracy within unions, contrasting this approach with the dominant model of business unionism, where members often feel disconnected and disengaged. Traven and Steve highlight the need for workers to have a deeper knowledge of how the system operates in order to fight back against the capitalist order. They also touch on issues such as the need for a job guarantee and the impact of austerity measures on working-class people. In the face of climate crisis and continual economic crises, building a powerful, inclusive labor movement is more urgent than ever. Current president of the Green Mountain Central Labor Council, part of the leadership team of the Vermont State Labor Council, AFL CIO member of OPEIU 153, Teamster truck driver for Teamsters for a Democratic Union, and proud rank and file UAW Audi worker. @TravenL on Twitter

UPS Teamsters nationwide are voting on the tentative agreement for the largest private-sector labor contract in the United States. The vote will end on August 22. A majority decision will determine whether the contract is ratified, or the national negotiating committee will return to the bargaining table and potentially call a strike. In this episode, we explore the highlights of the tentative agreement and what its gains, such as the abolition of the driver two-tier and substantial wage increases, mean for workers' lives. We also dig into how the TA is proof that years of Teamsters organizing, including the past year's contract campaign, have reaped significant concessions from the company—something workers and other unions are already taking note of. Lastly, we discuss why raised member expectations, the COVID pandemic, and unsustainable costs of living have left some Teamsters disappointed with the current tentative agreement—and why this may actually be encouraging. You'll hear from two guests: Sean Orr is a UPS package car driver and elected shop steward from Teamsters Local 705 in Chicago. He is also Co-Chair of the International Steering Committee of Teamsters for a Democratic Union. Al Bradbury is the editor of Labor Notes, which is a media and organizing project that has been empowering rank and file workers to put the "movement" back in the labor movement since 1979.Read the transcript of this podcast: *Hosted by Teddy OstrowEdited by Teddy Ostrow and Ruby WalshProduced by NYGP & Ruby Walsh, in partnership with In These Times & The Real NewsMusic by Casey GallagherCover art by Devlin Claro Resetar**Support the show at Patreon.com/upsurgepod.Follow us on Twitter @upsurgepod, Facebook, The Upsurge, and YouTube @upsurgepod.***Read about the AT&T strike by 675,000 workers in 1983. We are less than two weeks away from what could be the largest single-employer strike in US history. As of this recording, contract negotiations between United Parcel Services (UPS) and the International Brotherhood of Teamsters have reportedly "collapsed"—and the clock is ticking until the current contract expires on July 31. If a deal is not reached and a strike occurs, what will it look like for 340,000 Teamster UPSers to walk off the job? What are the key issues that workers are prepared to strike over? And what can we all do to support them, whether a strike occurs or not? In this episode, we continue our coverage of the historic UPS contract fight by talking to Rikki Schreiner, a shop steward for Teamsters Local 638 in Minnesota who has worked for UPS since 1999, and Amber Mathwig, a part-time UPS warehouse worker and member of Teamsters Local 638.  Additional links/info below... The largest private sector labor contract in the US is set to expire at midnight on July 31; as negotiations continue to play out, we will soon see whether or not the 350,000 Teamsters working for United Parcel Services (UPS) will hit the picket line and wage one of the largest strikes in US history. As Sean Orr, a UPS package-car driver and elected shop steward for Teamsters Local 705 in Chicago, and Elliot Lewis, a UPS package-car driver and alternate shop steward for Teamsters Local 804 in New York City, recently wrote in Jacobin, "This contract fight is about two visions of work in the twenty-first century. One is promoted by workers: equal pay for equal work, dignity and autonomy on the job, and a stable work-life balance. The other is promoted by Wall Street: hypersurveillance, low pay, subcontracting, gig work, and 'flexible' scheduling practices that hurt workers and benefit bosses." In this episode, we talk to Sean Orr about growing up in a de-industrializing Milwaukee, his path to becoming a Teamster and working for UPS, why the current contract fight is such a pivotal moment for the Teamsters and the labor movement, and what we can all do to stand in solidarity with all UPS workers.  Additional links/info below... Happy Monday! Sam is back from vacation! He and Emma speak with Jon D. Erickson, professor of sustainability science and policy at The University of Vermont, to discuss his recent book The Progress Illusion: Reclaiming Our Future from the Fairytale of Economics. Then, they're joined but Justin Alo of Teamsters Local 542 and Matt Leichenger of Teamsters Local 804 to discuss UPS workers' campaign for a new contract. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the freezing of Mifepristone, the Fox-Dominion case, the Supreme Court hearing a case on Christians having to work on Sundays, the success of the faculty union at Rutgers, continuing gun violence across the US, the GOP Primary, and Macron's assault on the French working class, before parsing through the absences of Sam Seder and Dianne Feinstein. Jon D. Erickson then dives right into his concept of “progress illusion,” as capitalism's fairytale of market-driven, hyper-privatized progress, defined by marginal benefits and hyper-individualized choices that completely ignore the biophysical realities of our planet and who we are as humans. Next, he steps back to discuss the ideological nature of economics, and why that must be understood in searching for who and what economic systems are built for, diving into the statistic of Gross Domestic Product as a symbol of neoliberal progress, and how it emphasizes privatized profits while ignoring the social costs. After tackling the idea of economic systems as our servants (rather than masters), Professor Erickson walks Sam and Emma through his view of a statistic that is conscious of public costs, as put into practice in Vermont, and where such a system still falls short. Wrapping up, Jon, Emma, and Sam debate the role of capitalism and degrowth in a future that doesn't exclusively value private profits. Justi Alo and Matt Leichenger then dive into the recent UPS teamsters' strike, what the Teamsters for a Democratic Union caucus represents, and how a new generation of union organizers is stepping up. They also discuss UPS' massive profits over the pandemic, alongside diminishing working conditions, and what the teamsters' demands for this strike entail. And in The Fun Half: Sam and Emma cover the Right-Wing jumping at the chance to defend Dianne Feinstein's Senate seat, Kevin McCarthy's visit to Wall Street to let them know that the working class will be punished soon, and the Good Liars return to the NRA Conference. Glenn Beck and Ben Shapiro each dive into their own brands of historical revisionism (transphobic holocaust denial and the race of Cleopatra, respectively), which Brendan from San Diego analyzes, and Rob from Boston asks Emma and Bradley to please stop the Taibbi impressions. Under the new leadership team led by General President Sean M. O'Brien, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters are re-introducing themselves to the bosses and to the world as a fighting union, and they are gearing up for their biggest test yet: the impending negotiations of the IBT's contract with United Parcel Service (UPS). With UPS employing over 350,000 Teamster members around the country, theirs is the largest collective bargaining agreement in North America—and the current contract is set to expire on July 31. With national negotiations set to begin this month, Teamsters leaders are traveling to union locals around the country, mobilizing their members, and preparing UPS workers for a strike if a new contract is not reached on time. In this episode I explore the history of Branch County newspapers that existed between 1837 to the 1880's. The Michigan Star was the first one published in 1837 in the Village of Branch, and through the years there was the Coldwater Observer, The Branch County Democrat, the Coldwater Sentinel, The Branch County Republican, The Branch County Gazzette, The Democratic Union, The Southern Michigan News, The Coldwater Union Sentinel, The Republican, The Coldwater Reporter and the Coldwater Weekly Press all published in the immediate Coldwater area. In other parts of the county there existed publications in Bronson, Union City and Quincy. Most leaned towards the political views of a particular party of the time period, and and some existed only a few months. It is a fascinating look at the history of the press in Branch County Michigan. The information in this episode was taken from 'A History of Branch County Michigan' written by Crisfield Johnson and published in 1879. For the final part of our series on rank and file movements of the 1970s, we cover the movements formed by rank and file women workers to fight not only for better wages and conditions, but also to stop the entrenched culture of discrimination on the job. As millions of public sector workers joined unions, teachers, nurses and civil servants had bargaining rights for the first time. Along with flight attendants, nurses, and many other professions, women workers struggled successfully to not just win respect on the job, but to totally change public consciousness around women in the workforce. We also finish our run of rank and file stores with the Teamsters and the birth of the longest enduring organization from this era, Teamsters for a Democratic Union. Fighting against concession filled contracts for decades, the TDU has been a constant presence since this era in the struggle to democratize and reform the Teamsters. As the longest surviving and most successful union reform movement in the US labor movement, there is so much we can learn from the history of the TDU, and all the other inspiring struggles by the rank and file to stop the loss of all that prior generations of union workers had fought for. For the second part of our series on rank and file movements of the 1970s, we cover the militant workers of the UAW and the CWA. Both these unions faced similar trends of class collaborationist leadership more focused on enforcing existing contracts than resolving problems faced by union workers. Movements like the United National Caucus and the Bell Workers Action Committee arose in response, fighting for democratic control both on the shop floor and within their unions themselves. This era saw both explosive wildcat strikes and oppressive responses from leadership to movements they saw as attacks on their power. While many of these movements were short lived, there's so much we can learn from their fights to inform our practice today. On the third and final part of this series we will cover rank and file movements by nurses, teachers, flight attendants and the formation of the longest lasting and most successful of the 70s rank and file movements, Teamsters for a Democratic Union. "As blistering heat waves swept across the United States this summer, breaking temperature records and placing millions under heat advisories and warnings," Livia Albeck-Ripka writes at The New York Times, "workers... have continued to deliver America's packages for a variety of carriers, often in trucks that have no cooling mechanisms for drivers. Some UPS workers have shared photographs that show thermometer readings of up to 150 degrees in the backs of their trucks." A shocking number of package deliverers and letter carriers—to say nothing of farmworkers, construction workers, warehouse workers, etc.—have reported heat-related injuries and illnesses, and some have even died on the job from heat exposure. As climate change makes dangerous working conditions even worse for those who are exposed to extreme heat, workers, unions, and the public are demanding serious action be taken. In this urgent panel episode, we speak with Zakk, Gabriela, and Steve, three UPS package deliverers and members of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, about the serious dangers of working in the heat and the fight they and their union are waging to ensure better protections for workers.  Additional links/info below... You may recognize Howie Hawkins from the 2020 Presidential Election when he ran for POTUS as the Green Party candidate. He is now running for Governor of New York for a fourth time. He ran in 2010, 2014, and 2018, each time receiving enough votes to qualify the Green Party for a ballot line for the next four years. This time NY made it tougher for third parties to make it on the ballot, but his fight continues. He also ran for local office in Syracuse and pulled in as much as 48% of the vote one year. Howie was the first candidate to run on a Green New Deal as well. In 1991 he arrived in Syracuse to develop cooperatives for CommonWorks, a federation of cooperatives that promoted cooperative ownership, democratic control, and ecological sustainability in the local economy. He is currently a member of Vietnam Veterans Against the War, American Legion Dunbar Post 1642 in Syracuse, and Teamsters for a Democratic Union. Echo Sthlm - News in Russian on the war in Ukraine

--- "The Russian is coming!" is an expression that has existed in the Swedish language for more than 300 years. Swedes still can't forget how the Russian fleet devastated the coasts of Norrland in May and June 1721 and how the Russians occupied Västerbotten in 1809. The Swedes' three-hundred-year-old fear of an unpredictable and brutal neighbour to the east is largely the reason for the impending decision to abandon their legendary neutrality and, together with Finland, hide from the Russians in the arms of NATO. "The Russians are coming!" is also the title of a book by Liza Aleksandrova-Zorina, a writer and human rights activist living in Sweden, who will be interviewed in today's episode. Swedish neutrality and its history, and how Swedes view the effectiveness of economic and moral sanctions against Russia is one of the topics of today's programme. We will also remember the astonishing prediction made by the famous Russian dissident and founder of the Democratic Union party, Valeria Novodvorskaya. Already seven years ago, she saw the terrible threat that Russia would undeniably pose to Ukraine. And as always, the latest news from the scene of the war.

Join veteran labor organizers Joe Burns and Barbara Madeloni for a discussion about how to rebuild a fighting labor movement. Celebrate the launch of Joe Burns' new book, Class Struggle Unionism, with a conversation between Burns and Barbara Madeloni about how we can create a more militant, democratic and fighting labor movement. How should workers relate to the union establishment which often does not want to fight? How much should the labor movement prioritize broader class demands versus shop floor struggle? How can we revive militancy and union power in the face of corporate power and a legal system set up against us? Class struggle unionism is the belief that our union struggle exists within a larger struggle between an exploiting billionaire class and the working class which actually produces the goods and services in society. Class Struggle Unionism not only defines the urgency of our common struggle, it's a textbook on how to organize around our common demands right where we work in order to build a movement strong enough to realize an inclusive economy and thriving democracy." —Sara Nelson, International President of the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA, AFL-CIO --------------------------------------------------------------------- Speakers: Joe Burns is a veteran union negotiator and labor lawyer with over 25 years experience negotiating labor agreements. The International Brotherhood of Teamsters just held a pivotal leadership election that will set a new course for one of the most storied unions in existence. The election officially marked the end of the Hoffa era—James P. Hoffa, son of Jimmy Hoffa, retired as Teamsters General President. In a major shift that will have significant ripple effects within the Teamsters and the labor movement writ large, members elected the Teamsters United reform slate headed by incoming president and Hoffa critic Sean O'Brien. As journalist Indigo Olivier wrote for Jacobin, “With 1.4 million members, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT) election results have implications not just for the massive upcoming United Parcel Service (UPS) contract, but for organizing Amazon and pushing labor-friendly legislation like the Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act. The election marks the first time that a coalition backed by Teamsters for a Democratic Union, a rank-and-file reform caucus, will head the union since former IBT president Ron Carey was removed from office on false corruption charges in 1997.”We will bring you a rank-and-file breakdown of the election in the coming weeks, but for now we are publicly releasing one of our recent Working People bonus episodes so listeners can have some context to understand the importance of this election. In this episode, recorded in October, we talk with Indigo Olivier about the Teamsters leadership election and the 46th annual Teamsters for a Democratic Union (TDU) convention, which was held in Chicago on Oct. 1-3. Olivier is a 2020–2021 fellow with In These Times' Leonard C. Goodman Institute for Investigative Reporting and her writing has been featured at outlets like Jacobin, In These Times, and The Nation. A lot of important history is being made right now, and something potentially game-changing is unfolding among the American workforce. At this very moment, 10,000 UAW members at John Deere are on strike in Iowa, Illinois, and Kansas; 35,000 healthcare workers at Kaiser Permanente have authorized a strike; 1,400 workers at cereal giant Kellogg's are on strike in Nebraska, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee; 1,100 coal miners in Alabama have been on strike since April; 800 nurses in Massachusetts have been on strike since March; and numerous other strikes and strike authorizations are also unfolding. On top of that, record numbers of US workers are voluntarily quitting their jobs, in what is being called the “Great Resignation.”At the same time, there are crucial struggles happening that may not seem as dramatic as collective strikes but are no less important for the future of the labor movement. One of these struggles is taking place within the United Auto Workers itself, where members are currently voting on an unprecedented referendum that will decide whether or not the 400,000 working members and nearly 600,000 retirees can directly elect their top union officers. Ballots went out on Oct. 19 and are due back at the end of November. If the referendum passes, it could be the beginning of a massive shakeup for the union, which many members say needs more democratic governance and more militant energy coming from the rank-and-file. Unite All Workers for Democracy (UAWD), a grassroots caucus of UAW members advocating for direct elections, has been leading the charge for this historic referendum. In this episode of Working People, we talk with Justin Mayhugh, who has worked at General Motors in Kansas City for over a decade and is an organizer with the UAWD caucus.Justin Mayhugh Twitter page: https://twitter.com/justinmayhughUnite All Workers for Democracy (UAWD) Facebook page, Twitter page, and Instagram:https://www.facebook.com/UniteAllWorkersForDemocracyhttps://twitter.com/UAWD_Reformhttps://www.instagram.com/uawd_reform/Jonah Furman, The Real News Network, "A Once-in-a-Generation Chance to Revive the UAW Is Coming": https://therealnews.com/a-once-in-a-generation-chance-to-revive-the-uaw-is-comingFeatured Music (all songs sourced from the Free Music Archive: freemusicarchive.org)Jules Taylor, "Working People Theme Song"Help us continue producing radically independent news and in-depth analysis by following us and becoming a monthly sustainer: Donate: https://therealnews.com/donate-podSign up for our newsletter: https://therealnews.com/newsletter-podLike us on Facebook: https://facebook.com/therealnewsFollow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/therealnews

The company that we see everyday but know so little about. How did a company that began as a bicycle messenger service in Seattle, Washington become a global behemoth? How did it displace General Motors, the very symbol of American capitalism, to become the largest, private sector, unionized employer in the United States? COVID-19 has put an incredible amount of pressure on higher education and its workers, including graduate students and contingent faculty who shoulder heavy workloads and make poverty-level or near-poverty-level wages. While simultaneously fighting to get universities to recognize them as workers, many graduate students around the U.S. are organizing, demanding, and even going on strike for better wages, benefits, and treatment. In the first segment of this week's “Marc Steiner Show,” we speak with three graduate workers and organizers about what they're fighting for and what these fights mean for the future of higher education: Rithika Ramamurthy, an English Ph.D. candidate at Brown University and president of the Graduate Labor Organization; Harlan Chambers, a Ph.D. student at Columbia University in the Institute of Comparative Literature and Society and member of the Graduate Workers of Columbia - UAW Local 2110 and the Columbia Academic Workers for a Democratic Union caucus; and Dylan Iannitelli, a sixth-year Ph.D. student in Biology at NYU and a steward for the Graduate Student Organizing Committee, the grad worker union at NYU.Then, in our second segment, we kick off an exciting collaboration with Jacobin magazine by talking with Matthew E. Stanley about his recent series of Jacobin articles on the continued relevance of forgotten or understudied struggles in 19th-century America. Stanley is Assistant Professor of History at Albany State University in Albany, Georgia; he is the author of “The Loyal West: War and Reunion in Middle America,” and he has a new book coming out with the University of Illinois Press called “Grand Army of Labor: Workers, Veterans, and the Meaning of the Civil War.”Tune in for new episodes of The Marc Steiner Show every Friday on TRNN.

In continuing my mission of bringing as many progressive candidates the attention I believe they deserve, on this episode of the podcast we have O.G activist, organizer, and the man who helped create the Green Party as we know it, Mr. Howie Hawkins.  We recently had Angela Walker, his VP pick on the show, and after talking with Mr. Hawkins for a bit I understood why those two work so good together.  Genuine revolutionary souls they are.   A little about Howie: From the start, he was committed to independent working-class politics for a democratic, socialist, and ecological society. He supported the Peace and Freedom Party in 1968, the People's Party in 1972 and 1976, and the Citizens Party in 1980. Since its first national meeting in 1984, Howie has been a Green Party organizer. As the Green Party's candidate for governor of New York in 2010, 2014, and 2018, each time he received enough votes to qualify the Green Party for a ballot line for the next four years. In 2014, he received 5 percent of the vote, the most for an independent progressive party candidates for governor in New York history except for Socialist candidates who received 5.7% in 1918 and 5.6% in 1920. As a Green Party candidate many times for local office in Syracuse, his vote grew from 3% for at-large councilor in 1993 to 48% for a district council seat in 2011. In 2015, he received 35% of the citywide vote for city auditor. Outside of electoral politics, Howie has been a constant organizer in peace, justice, union, and environmental campaigns. When his draft number was called in 1972, Howie enlisted in the Marine Corps while continuing to organize against the Vietnam War. He remains a member of Vietnam Veterans Against the War as well as a member of the American Legion Dunbar Post 1642 in Syracuse. After studying at Dartmouth College, Howie worked in construction in New England in the 1970s and 1980s. He helped organize a worker cooperative that specialized in energy efficiency and solar and wind installations. When the Socialist Party of Eugene Debs, A. Philip Randolph, Helen Keller, and Norman Thomas re-established itself as an independent party in 1973, Howie joined and remains a member. He is also a member of Solidarity, which promotes “socialism from below” and international solidarity because the fight for freedom against all dictators and imperialisms is worldwide and indivisible. Howie was a co-founder of the anti-nuclear Clamshell Alliance in 1976. In the 1970s and 1980s, he was also a leader in the anti-apartheid divestment movement to end US corporate investment in the racist system of oppression and labor exploitation in South Africa. Howie moved to Syracuse in 1991 to develop cooperatives for CommonWorks, a federation of cooperatives that promoted cooperative ownership, democratic control, and ecological sustainability in the local economy. From 2001 to 2018, he worked as a Teamster unloading trucks at UPS. Now retired, he remains a supporter of Teamsters for a Democratic Union, US Labor Against the War, the Labor Campaign for Single Payer Healthcare, the Labor Network for Sustainability, and the Labor Notes network.  Howie's articles on politics, economics, and environmental issues have appeared in Against the Current, Black Agenda Report, CounterPunch, Green Politics, International Socialist Review, Labor Notes, New Politics, Peace and Democracy News, Roll Call, Society and Nature, Z Magazine, and other publications. He is the editor of, and a contributor to, Independent Politics: The Green Party Strategy Debate (Haymarket Books, 2006).   Donate to the Campaign Here   If you guys haven't done it yet, BECOME A PATRON! This episode is a recording of an event which took place in Sydney on Tuesday 26 November 2019. A former academic, Zandberg was a leader of 2011’s social justice protests in Israel and a member of Tel Aviv’s city council before entering the Knesset for the Meretz party in 2013. She was the party’s leader from 2018-19, including the April 2019 election. She was reelected in September’s election on the Democratic Union ticket. This event took place at an unprecedented time in Israeli political history with two elections occurring back-to-back in 2019, one in April and another in September. Prime Minister Netanyahu had already been indicted for corruption and bribery and both he and opposition leader Benny Gantz had failed to form a coalition, and it looked inevitable that a third election was on its way. Tamar provided an insider’s perspective to one of the most turbulent years in Israeli history, as well as offered her analysis on some of the most pressing issues facing Israelis, including the ongoing occupation of the Palestinian territories, issues of religion and state and how to create a joint Jewish-Arab coalition for democracy. She’s joined in this conversation by journalist Debbie Whitmont.

When we think of the Teamsters union, we often think of the mob and the figure of Jimmy Hoffa, memorialized by countless Hollywood films. Yet Ken Paff reminds us that the International Brotherhood of Teamsters should also conjure up in our minds rank and file militancy and enormous worker power in key sectors of the economy — as witnessed in the late 1990s with the UPS strike. Paff, one of the founders of Teamsters for a Democratic Union, reflects upon the history and future of the IBT. They both tell him why it is important that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu lose the September 17 election. They both warn that if Netanyahu will be re-eelected, Israeli democracy will be in danger. Gil asks Shaffir if she regrets leaving Labor now that her current party is only getting six seats in the polls, and he speculates with Lapid about what would happen if neither Netanyahu's Likud, nor Lapid's Blue and White can form a government. Trade union activists, particularly those on the left, will almost certainly be familiar with the terms “bureaucracy” and “rank and file”. But what do they mean? In this episode, with Ellie sadly absent, Edd gives us a historical sketch of the development of trade union officialdom, and talks about some Marxist approaches to understanding it. Daniel worries that he might himself have become a bureaucrat. Finally, we talk to Rhian Keyse, an activist in the University and College Union, about the embryonic rank-and-file revolt in that union around the 2018 strikes against pension cuts.
