Vanity Project are proud to present the first in the forthcoming trilogy of THREE COLOURS: White. In their first ever multi-episode saga Vanity Project daringly go where the likes of Aristotle and an exploratory lone monkey have gone before: to the White Material that made you. It's an episode about semen, and the perfect recipe for how to increase your load. Through a textual and cultural analysis semen is the fulcrum for a new discourse on race, the cultivation of male sexuality, and the last funny movie, Bridesmaids. We brave The Colonial Cumshot, Images of Bliss, and Edmund White on Robert Maplethorpe. We ask, is cum kind of a gay guy thing? Where were you when Diddy threw the first White Party?

For the 20th episode of 400 Floor we talk to Chris Sherron and Quinn Taylor, two old friends better known by their monikers Galcher Lustwerk and Young Male. The two RISD grads met in Providence in the mid 2000s and bonded over their shared love of club music, teaming up to throw parties in Providence and eventually in New York, where Quinn started his label White Material. Both began touring the world and have not really stopped for the last decade. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Our first Claire Denis film (well, unless you count all the work she did for Wim Wenders and Jim Jarmusch), 2009's White Material is the story of a white French coffee farmer trying to hold on to normalcy as the African country she lives in decolonizes. The crux of the problem of course being that while "normal" may mean "I can harvest and sell my coffee" it also means "the French army maintains an oppressive stranglehold over an entire nation." While colonialist forces wring every resource possible out of the country on their way out the door, unfortunately for Maria the coffee farmer, that doesn't include her coffee.
This week on the Film at Lincoln Center podcast, we're featuring a special archival Q&A from the 47th New York Film Festival in 2009 with director Claire Denis and cast members Isaach de Bankolé & William Nadylam on White Material, moderated by Melissa Anderson. Claire Denis returns to NYFF for this year's 60th-anniversary edition with two films: the Main Slate selection, Stars at Noon, and the Revivals selection, No Fear No Die. Based on the 1986 novel by Denis Johnson, Stars at Noon represents a new mode for director Claire Denis, a contemporary thriller suffused with political intrigue and languid eroticism, moving entirely to the tactile rhythms of its actors, especially rising star Margaret Qualley, who gives a live-wire performance of fervid spontaneity and mercurial passion. No Fear No Die, Claire Denis's rarely screened second feature, is a radically physical cinematic journey into the shadowy (under)world of illegal cockfighting. Isaach De Bankole and Alex Descas star as Dah and Jocelyn, two immigrants (from Benin and French Antilles, respectively) living on the outskirts of Paris who earn money from cockfights. A very limited amount of NYFF60 Passes are now on sale! Single tickets will go on sale to the General Public on September 19, with pre-sale access for FLC Members and Pass holders prior to this date. Listen to the discussion on the film below and don't forget to subscribe on iTunes, Spotify, or Stitcher for more filmmaker conversations.

(Content Warning: this episode addresses a film dealing with slavery, so please be advised). After the thoughtful, nuanced film WHITE MATERIAL, Andrew and Dave return in this episode to look at the ill-conceived MANDERLAY, director Lars von Trier's 2005 sequel to his 2003 hit, DOGVILLE. Just how wrong does the film go? How little faith does Dave have in von Trier's as a filmmaker and human being? And most importantly, is a better film to follow next week? Tune in and find out! Next Episode: Rock stars and remakes. All music by Andrew Kannegiesser. Editing by Dave Babbitt.
In this episode, the podcasting duo of Andrew and Dave take a look at director Claire Denis' 2009 drama, WHITE MATERIAL! What follows is a nearly two hour discussion which explores post-colonial fiction, art-house cinema, and whether or not Christopher Lambert is a significantly better actor in French than he is in English. Next Episode: (sigh) We'll make it through it. All music by Andrew Kannegiesser. Editing by Dave Babbitt
Carly and Tucker start with a showstopper this week: RECASTING OCEAN'S 11 FOR 2020. That's right, you won't BELIEVE who they chose to portray Basher, Don Cheadle's classic British explosives expert! Then they talk about the movie itself, which is about rich people being angry at other rich people for being rich! Carly talks about the contentious coffee of White Material and the creepy zoomies of Host, and Tucker barely makes it through The Firm and some documentary about some guy. But then: is Sorry to Bother You good?!? You'll have to fire up Fandango Now! and check it out for yourself!
The guys watch Claire Denis's 2009 'White Material'

After graduating from the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, American DJ Richard went on to set up White Material. It’s a label and artistic collective including the likes of Young Male that became synonymous with roughed up, frayed house and techno. In 2015, Richard served up a debut album on Dial that was a deep meditation on foggy, ambient coated house drones. Since then, aside from DJ gigs round the world, he has been rather quiet in terms of releases. That means this podcast from him is timely indeed, and shows us just where he is at: serving up jagged rhythms, industrial cold wave cuts and bleak, grainy atmospheres that are devoid of human life if not for the odd dehumanised vocal yelps and pained cry. It’s fizzing, mid tempo but engaging stuff that is underpinned by a tension and darkness that always keeps you intrigued.
In terms of influence, Dansman began his electronic musical journey with the likes of DJ Tiesto (the “Magik” mix series) then moved on to such luminaries as the Chemical Brothers, before settling onto the bleeding edge of underground house and techno. Now, Dansman takes as much joy from listening to Top 40 Rap/R&B as he does listening to unreleased white-labels fresh from Bucharest, making him uniquely qualified to know what people want before they know themselves. A rising comet in the DC scene, Dansman has honed his skills for over six years, playing sold-out shows in shotgun bars for tens of people. His popular #BODYFEEL party series, founded with cohort and longtime platonic lover, Throe, blends an urban aesthetic with airy techno and has featured such artists as Bambounou, Girl Unit, Peverlist and Kowton, and the White Material crew. With a monthly residency at DC’s hottest underground club, Flash, Dansman improves his profile with every record played.
