JoshRyan is a singer/ songwriter who's been performing his entire life. He moved to LA to pursue music in 2020, but before that he was a musical theater actor that appeared in multiple musical productions such as RENT, Anything Goes and Sister Act the Musical. Moving to the west coast unaware of the pandemic that shortly followed, JoshRyan took that time to write and truly figure out the sound that he wanted to present to the world. Being inspired by the sounds of r&b and soul, but also having a sweet tooth for pop music JoshRyan gravitated towards artist that did just that. On July 10 2023 JoshRyan released his first EP “Tell”. “Tell” is an auto biographical 6 song EP that dives into the personal life of JoshRyan the person.
This week Alainna and Talia did their homework, watching the Debby Ryan and Josh (Ryan? James? Jay?) Dunn house tour for Architectural Digest, and have a lot to say about it. What's Debby Ryan been up to lately? Why'd they move back to Columbus? How'd they get a feature in Architectural Digest? They may not find all the answers but the journey is entertaining at least.
Today's episode is a very raw conversation about Sex and Theology with Josh Ryan Butler, Dr. Sandy Richter, and Brenna Blain. Josh Ryan Butler is pastor of Redemption Tempe in Arizona, the author of Beautiful Union (and a few other books). Dr. Sandy Richter is currently the The Robert H. Gundry Chair of Biblical Studies at Westmont college and the author of many books including one of my favorite books on the Old Testament, The Epic of Eden. Sandy has an MDiv from Gordon Conwell Theological Seminary and a PhD from Harvard University. When looking at Brenna Blain you might not guess that she works in ministry, with a body adorned in tattoos and piercings she doesnt fit the evangelical look many have grown up with, but that's just Brenna. Her ministry focus is on providing resources for churches, ministries and individuals who are seeking to find God in the midst of difficult topics and hard conversations. Whether she's teaching at conferences, producing podcasts or writing, you will find Brenna inviting you to pursue Biblical truth with compassion and conviction. Brenna obtained her BA in Theology and Biblical Studies from Multnomah University in Portland, Oregon and has lived in the PNW her entire life. Her greatest joys are her two sons and her husband Austin. While she speaks on many topics, Brenna is especially passionate about God's involvement in our pain and personal struggles including mental illness, same sex attraction and abuse. In this podcast conversation, Brenna shares her story about her journey with abuse, mental health challenges, questions around her sexuality, and how her hope in Christ has remained constant in the midst of many challenges. The subject of this episode is, “What is a conference committee and why are they so rare today?” My guest is https://joshmryan.github.io/ (Josh Ryan). He is an associate professor of political science at Utah State University. Josh studies Congress, the president, state legislatures and executives, as well as electoral institutions. Importantly for the purpose of this episode of Understanding Congress, Josh is the author of the book https://amzn.to/3iQ9WuP (The Congressional Endgame: Interchamber Bargaining and Compromise) (University of Chicago Press, 2018). This book examines conference committees and the other ways the two chambers of Congress come to an agreement—or not—on legislation. Kevin Kosar: Welcome to Understanding Congress, a podcast about the first branch of government. Congress is a notoriously complex institution, and few Americans think well of it, but Congress is essential to our republic. It's a place where our pluralistic society is supposed to work out its differences and come to agreement about what our laws should be. And that is why we are here: to discuss our national legislature and to think about ways to upgrade it so it can better serve our nation. I'm your host, Kevin Kosar, and I'm a resident scholar at the American Enterprise Institute, a think tank in Washington, DC. Josh, welcome to the podcast. Josh Ryan: Thanks so much for having me. Kevin Kosar: Let's start very simply, Schoolhouse Rock! style. What is a conference committee? Josh Ryan: We think of Congress as one branch of government, and Congress is actually two different institutions. The House and the Senate are separated from each other. They have almost no control over what the other chamber does. They have their own legislators, obviously. They have their own procedures, their own norms, their own committees, their own ways of doing things. And when they write a bill, even if the House and the Senate generally agree on the parameters of the bill and what's going to be in the bill, because of all these differences, they usually write two different versions of a bill. So we can think of the House as developing some version of a bill to address some policy problem. Typically the Senate takes up legislation after the House, but not always. Senators are their own people and they like to do their own thing, and they typically change the House bill in some way. So even though the House and the Senate are supposed to kind of be working together, if the bill is anything more interesting or substantive than some trivial piece of legislation, we're going to end up with two different versions of the bill. The Constitution requires that Congress can only send one version of the bill to the president, so the House and the Senate have to have some way of resolving their differences, of agreeing on the exact same language for a given bill. Historically, one of the main ways that they've come to an agreement is by using a conference committee. This is a temporary committee, so it's different than the standing committees in Congress, like the Agriculture Committee or the Armed Services Committee, which exist and are more or less permanent. The conference committee is ad hoc. It's created just to address the differences between the House and the Senate on a particular bill. The House and the Senate will each designate conferees. These are individuals usually who serve on the standing committees which dealt with the bill. And those people will go to a conference where they sit down and they try to hash out the differences between the House and the Senate version. Once they've done that, the conference committee sends the bill back to both chambers, and both the House and the Senate then have to vote on the bill again. But importantly, they can't make changes to the bill at that point, and the House and the Senate have the exact same version of the bill, exactly the same words, etc. At that point, if they both approve the bill, the bill...
In a very special Sports Legends with Bevo and on one of the biggest days of his life I had the incredible pleasure of chatting to West Adelaide Football Club young gun and all-round nice guy Josh Carmichael who is a red hot chance of getting picked up in tonight's AFL mid-season draft. Josh has been tearing it up this year at the Bloods in the SANFL competition averaging 24 possessions a game, 5 clearances and has kicked 9 goals in his eight games which resulted in him representing SA against WA recently in SA's thrilling win at Optus Stadium. We spoke about how Josh ended up at the Bloods, what it would mean to him to be picked up in the mid-season draft, his thoughts on the SANFL competition, influences on his footy career and life growing up at Merbein in country Victoria. We also had a bit of fun where I got Josh to dish the dirt on some of his team mates at the club. Thanks so much to Josh for giving up his time on such a busy day, to Josh Ryan from the WAFC for teeing up the chat and to Jeff Richardson from JP Media for a great job of filming and editing the video. Thankyou to our partners Peter Page Hyundai and Anytime Fitness Glenelg.

Communicating the Beauty of Christian Sexual Ethics Sex is everywhere in our culture, yet an intimidating subject for many Christians to talk about. We may be convinced God's vision for sex is true but is it also good and beautiful? We'll explore some fresh language, imagery, and concepts from Scripture, to help us communicate biblical sexual ethics winsomely, narratively, and beautifully to a culture that is highly skeptical of the Christian vision. Josh Butler Joshua Ryan Butler is Pastor of Teaching and Direction at Redemption Church (Tempe, AZ) and author of The Skeletons in God's Closet: The Mercy of Hell, the surprise of Judgment, the Hope of Holy War and The Pursuing God: A Reckless, Irrational, Obsessed Love That's Dying to Bring Us Home.
