Many believe that partisan politics has created a roadblock in efforts to reach across the aisle and forge ahead. Nationally, the chasm separating Democrats and Republicans can be felt to be vast, but what about here in Washington state? Is it possible that similar divisive politics could be holding up progress beneficial to all? If so, what are recommendations for characteristics and qualities needed in future leaders to govern more effectively? Join Town Hall Seattle and Seattle CityClub for a virtual Civic Cocktail program with host Joni Balter and guests Tina Podlodowski, chair of the Washington State Democratic Party, and Caleb Heimlich, chair of the Washington State Republican Party. Tune in for an in-depth conversation with the guests, including audience questions. As a 40-year-old nonpartisan, civics-focused nonprofit, Seattle CityClub provides a platform for insightful and educational conversations that include a diverse range of perspectives. The youngest State Republican Party Chairman in the country, Caleb Heimlich has served as Chairman of the Washington State Republican Party since his election in January of 2018. He is a respected member of the Republican National Committee and was unanimously elected Vice Chairman for the Western Region, and a member of the RNC Executive Committee. Upon graduation, he worked for Americans for Prosperity in Washington DC and then for AFP in Washington State organizing grass roots activists. That led to being hired as the Political Director of the WSRP in 2011, promoted to Executive Director in 2013. Tina Podlodowski is the daughter of two naturalized U.S. citizens who fled post-WWII Europe as refugees. As a first-generation American, “union kid,” and lifelong Democrat, Podlodowski has spent her life fighting for equity and equality and gained prominence as a visible leader in both the Democratic party nationally, and the LGBTQ community nationally and internationally. After a career as an executive at Microsoft, Podlodowski won an at-large seat on the Seattle City Council with 65% of the popular vote. Podlodowski won her first term as State Party Chair in 2017. Nationally, Podlodowski is proud to be the Western Association of State Democratic Committees Vice President (representing all of our Western States), Chair of the DNC Western States Caucus (again, representing all of our Western States), and a member of the 2021 DNC Executive Committee. Special thanks to CityClub’s premiere partner Comcast, and media partner Seattle Channel. Presented by Seattle City Club and Town Hall Seattle.

Good News: If you didn't have insurance in 2019, you won't have to pay a tax penalty. Bad News: Depending on how much your medical bills were, you may not be able to write them off your tax return. Did you move this year and planning to write off your expenses on your taxes? Bad news. The new code for 2018 won't allow you to do that. WSRP presents Week 14 of Weekend Sports Huddle with Tom Pollin and Dave Holcomb. The NFL couldn't get one game into their season without controversy raising it's head. The Denver Broncos squeezed past the Carolina Panthers 21-20 last Thursday night when Graham Gano hooked a 50 yard field goal as time ran out but the exciting, edge of your seat game took a back seat to Cam Newton taking at least four blows to the head from the Broncos defense. Only one was penalized. Newton was shaky but never checked for a possible concussion which has led to more charges of NFL hypocrisy. Later we'll preview the Bears as they travel to Houston to take on the Texans and the Steelers heading to the nation's capital for a Monday night tilt against the Redskins. Afterwards, Nostrathomas will stop by to give predictions that NFL fans can "take to the bank". We'll finish the show with a look at the Cubs magic number and how the playoff races stack up in the National and American Leagues.

I finally spoke to Mike Young, founder, CTO and employee number 2. Unfortunately Mike had to leave early after last year's european symposium, so there I just got "the Brians" instead of the whole founder circle. This completes "the founders", though with Mike I'm more on the technical side. However. For those interested in the company history, there's still some things in there. As you'll see and hear, Mike is the project lead for Liferay Sync which has just been released this week (1. February 2012) - check it out or listen to the earlier episodes where it was mentioned. (11 and 13) Please refer to the Sync product home page or James' blog post announcing sync in order to see updates and current information on market positioning and licensing, which was not finalized when we spoke last December - so we didn't cover those topics then. We talked about * how Mike first met Brian Chan * You might remember that Brian suggested Mike that he had to use EJB for his wedding website - here's the story behind that, and how it got him involved with Brian and Liferay in the end. * The parts of Liferay's code that Mike was involved in - starting with "everyone did everything" * Liferay Sync, OpenSocial and WSRP being the current areas of work * With Mike I finally found the project lead, responsible for lobbying for a Linux client for Sync and was able to rant on. He delivered a nice and understandable reasoning. Even though this means I'll have to wait, I guess I won't rant any more ;-) * The mentioned "not yet" released Sync product has actually been released this week * Mike is the initial implementor of the OpenSocial implementation in 2009 or 2010, but now handed it over to Dennis * I know Mike best for his involvement with WSRP, "Web Services for Remote Portlets" - we talk about what it is and what it takes to make this really compatible with other portals. There are quite some interpretations of this standard (and not only this) that need to be validated in the respective environments. * The aspects that eat into performance when you have two portals involved in answering your request - and what the implementors on both side can do to mitigate the drawbacks. * The nature of WSRP calls and how it all works on a very high level * The roadmap for OpenSocial and what we're planning to build on top of that for the next release (6.2) You'll find this episode - and make sure that you don't miss any of the future episodes - by subscribing to the RSS feed, on itunes or with your podcatcher of choice - you'll find all the options on www.liferay.com/radio. And if you want to get notified when the next episode is out, follow @RadioLiferay This is another recording I did with some new recording gear, but, being new gear, I messed up the levels so I had to denoise it a bit, unfortunately a bit of noise still remains. I'm doing my best to get rid of that in future recordings. And please remember to rate this podcast in your podcast directory of choice and provide feedback here on the episodes as well. Thank you.
