A brief tale of the dismal success of a scientist's experiment. Anton's Last Dream by Edwin Baird. That's next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast.Another podcast, another debut—this time for author Edwin Baird. Best known as the first editor of Weird Tales magazine, Baird helped launch the iconic American fantasy and horror pulp, whose first issue was dated March 1923 and hit newsstands on February 18 of that year. However, Weird Tales got off to a rocky start. Plagued by financial difficulties, the magazine struggled, and Baird was dismissed after just one year at the helm. Born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, in 1886, Baird published four short stories during his lifetime—three before Weird Tales and one in the very magazine that let him go.Yet perhaps his most enduring legacy lies in his editorial decisions. As the magazine's founding editor, Baird was among the first to publish the work of a now-legendary author: H.P. Lovecraft. And if you've heard our earlier episodes, you'll recall that Lovecraft was a tireless letter writer. Thankfully many of his letters were preserved, including this one to Baird.Shortly after the first issue of Weird Tales was published Lovecraft let himself be persuaded to send Edwin Baird five manuscripts. This is a portion of the letter Lovecraft sent, “My Dear Sir: Having a habit of writing weird, macabre, and fantastic stories for my own amusement, I have lately been simultaneously hounded by nearly a dozen well-meaning friends into deciding to submit a few of these Gothic horrors to your newly-founded periodical. The decision is herewith carried out. Enclosed are five tales written between 1917 and 1923.I have no idea that these things will be found suitable, for I pay no attention to the demands of commercial writing. My object is such pleasure as I can obtain from the creation of certain bizarre pictures, situations, or atmospheric effects; and the only reader I hold in mind is myself. My models are invariably the older writers, especially Poe, who has been my favorite literary figure since early childhood. Should any miracle impel you to consider the publication of my tales, I have but one condition to offer; and that is that no excisions be made. If the tale can not be printed as written, down to the very last semicolon and comma, it must gracefully accept rejection.”So there you have it, a little piece of science fiction history thanks to Weird Tales editor Edwin Baird.Published in Weird Tales Magazine in May 1937 on page 607, Anton's Last Dream by Edwin Baird…Next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast, A Certain Young Man Finds Dying a Profitable Business. SOMETIME IN 1922, a letter came in to the city of Pendleton. Enclosed with it was a bill for $45 — for a set of new Goodyear tires. It seemed the letter writer had come to Pendleton for the annual Pendleton Round-Up and had lost both front tires to the city's downtown potholes. Pendleton's potholes were famous, both for their size and for their intractability. They seemed hungry; one filled them up and a few weeks later they were empty again, as if some night-stalking gravel thief had scooped it all out. It wasn't until the 1970s and 1980s, when some of Pendleton's most intractable roadbeds got a complete rebuild, that road crews realized what the problem had been: Tunnels. The town was honeycombed with them, running a few feet below the ground level, connecting the basements and sidewalk vaults downtown with various other places nearby. And, that's how the Pendleton Underground was rediscovered. The Enclosed Garden is one of the oldest expressions of civilization, and possessesa long and direct relationship to symbolism and mythology. Such a garden creates afertile place of verdant abundance, a haven of peace and quiet, shade and water, order and pleasure and a retreat from a hostile, threatening and chaotic wilderness. The world beyond the wall is boundless, expansive, universal, timeless and chaotic.By contrast, the world within the wall provides us with a sense of palpability of therich dark earth or the ‘erotic' sense of space; senses and feelings of safety, finitudeand individuality: a Temenos for the soul. This lecture explores three images of theEnclosed Garden: the Garden of Eden, the Islamic Garden and the Taoist Garden. The enclosed garden symbolises not only our coming into being, but also our journeyof becoming.

Diversion? https://erickimphotography.com/blog/2024/08/18/sports-set-yourself-free/ Audio: https://erickimphotography.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/SPORTS.m4a --- # NEVER SIT What is the weirdest and most bizarre thing in modern-day life? Enclosed spaces, sitting? ## Achilles One visual I really like from the movie *Troy*, with Brad Pitt as Achilles, is when he's in his little hut, sleeping with his beautiful babes, and he's woken up by the kid who tells him that he needs to fight this really steroided-out barbarian fighter. The first thought… I think the reason why people love camping so much is that it is far more natural and naturalistic; essentially, all day, you're outside, and even in the evening, you're al fresco by the fire… hanging out! And this is the bizarre thing… what is modernity? The *preference* to be indoors, with weakening air conditioning, or the preference to sit, instead of the preference to be out and about, traversing the outdoor terrain? ## Ideas I'll give you examples: the enclosed modern-day gymnasium. Now, about a year without a gym membership… I've discovered how bizarre it is. First, if you think about the naturalistic gymnasium of the ancient Greeks, it was an open-air gymnasium. Pretty much like a huge massive plot of dirt or sand, and a bunch of naked dudes working out, doing bodily combat exercises, training, hanging out talking shop, etc. I think the problem in today's world is that we have commoditized everything. We've even commoditized the human body, and we have applied both capitalistic and consumerist notions to the body. For example, weight. Weight, like calories, is the most insanely foolish idea. For example, let's say that you are 6 feet tall and 300 pounds. Now this is different if you are 80% body fat, a morbidly obese man, or if you are 5% body fat, and you look like a demigod. Imagine someone like Ronnie Coleman without the steroids. This is very pernicious with women; I think this is the bizarre contradiction: men are always trying to gain weight, while women are trying to lose weight. If we think about this from a modern-day capitalistic productivity perspective… with money, we are always trying to gain it, never lose it. But if we thought about money like weight, the analogy starts to change a bit. There is nobody on the planet who likes to lose money. Nobody. Also, almost universally… Everyone likes to gain money. Also... it seems that people also like to *spend* money. But the bizarre irony is that **the moment you spend money, you lose money**. Then the thought is, that is OK… I'll just keep working harder, in order to earn more money, in order to spend it more. ## White people make money don't spend it I almost feel like Kanye West almost figured everything out. Of course, not everything, but a lot. --- This portion explores themes around modern society's norms and behaviors, particularly the contradictions in how we live, exercise, and manage our resources like money and health. There's a critique of indoor living and a comparison to more natural, outdoor activities, along with an analysis of the commodification of the body and the absurdities of modern economic behavior.

This week on the Construction Genius Podcast, we are joined by Hans Lorei, a designer based in the Nashville Metropolitan Area. In this conversation, we bring you a glimpse of the designer world where we discuss commercial and residential spaces, the key elements of a great space, the unique kinship between music and design, and many more topics related to being a good designer. Hans Lorei entered the construction world as a real estate agent in 2015. After transforming to design and development, he noticed a similar trend with short-term rentals: better-looking properties with more facilities had higher occupancy and rented at higher rates. He started a consulting business a few years ago, helping people with short-term rentals. He likes to do long-term projects and looks forward to working with people who like to do exciting things and take chances. Starting the conversation, Hans shares his designer journey and explains what makes a good design, along with the two elements that make a great space: enclosed space and open space. We then talk about the most unique similarities between music and design, where you can find an interesting story behind the process of producing a song and building a place. Spending a lot of money on something doesn't mean it's going to be good. Most of the time, it's not the money, but the taste. In the next phase, Hans kindly explains the value of a good designer, who should have the ability to balance rations, details, plans, and texture. Furthermore, Hans shares both the pros and cons of reinventing yourself according to the changes in time. It is a superpower and a choice, but not a necessity. EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS [03.19] Hans's designer journey [08.04] Commercial and residential space. [10.00] Enclosed spaces and open spaces. [18.00] The democratization of music with social media. [19.27] The relationship between music and design. [26.06] The value of a good designer. [27.50] How to develop your design taste over time. [31.37] The relationship between human evolvement and design. [35.17] The pros and cons of reinventing yourself. [44.31] The services that Hans provides and why he likes long-term projects. TIPS AND TOOLS TO IMPLEMENT TODAY Be persistent, have faith, and don't force things to happen. Take time to be intentional about small details in a building. The value of a designer comes with the ability to balance rations, details, plans, and texture. The evolution of style is a choice, not a necessity. A great space should include both elements of enclosed and open spaces. Are people problems eroding your company's profits? The renowned technology magnate and Facebook's Chief Executive, Mark Zuckerberg, appears to have made a discreet departure in the high-end Woodside neighborhood in California. Emerging reports from real estate insider sources suggest that a company associated with Zuckerberg swiftly transferred the ownership of a 'Europeanesque mansion.' This precipitous property deal has sparked widespread chatter about the secretive nature of Zuckerberg's real estate activities. Significantly, this swap marks the second time the tech pioneer has silently divested of a property in California. The sumptuous residence, hidden in the verdant embrace of 75 Roberta Drive, showcases an impressive 4,800-square-foot home nestled within an ample expanse of 3.5 acres. Per Zillow's data, the grand residential marvel equipped with four bedrooms and 3.5 baths has been signed off in an attention-grabbing $29.6 million deal as of March 4, the San Mateo County records confirm. Enclosed within private gates, the property is home to a fully-equipped chef-grade kitchen, an expansive open-plan living and dining space with welcoming access to the broad outdoor area. Additionally, it offers the enchanting prospect of enjoying an al fresco meal with a view of the modern patio and various outdoors features. These comprise of a swimming pool, a hot tub, and an alluring open fireplace set on 'park-like grounds.' The residence also comfortably accommodates multiple electric car charging ports and a sizable garage. Much like the swift nature of the property sale, the specific details regarding the property brokers who facilitated the transaction were kept under wraps. This includes Mary Gullixson, a seasoned agent at Compass, who was in charge of the listing before but stated she wasn't involved with this recent sale. Going down the ownership rabbit hole uncovers a complex system of unnamed corporations. The sales entity, identified as 75 Roberta LLC, traces its management lineage to the A7P Services. Reports suggest this enigmatic LLC is stationed in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Interestingly, the office address of A7P Services matches that of A7P Trust Company Inc. Trustee, as found in filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Moreover, it isn't the first time this particular trustee company has been noticed entwined with Zuckerberg's affairs. There's an intriguing tale about Jack Sweeney, man popular for monitoring the private flights of prominent figures like Elon Musk and singer Taylor Swift. Sweeney had once tracked Zuckerberg's aircraft using its registration code, finding it tied directly back to this very A7P Trust. On closer examination, Apercen Partners, a respected tax consultancy firm serving the Silicon Valley elite, emerges as the signatory for 75 Roberta's company registration. Apercen's connections with Zuckerberg and his family stem from past high-profile transactions like the purchase of a $22.3 million townhouse in New York City back in 2015. Zuckerberg's venture into and out of the property world isn't limited to Woodside alone. He maintains an impressive portfolio across California and Hawaii, with his real estate holdings valuated at a whopping $320 million. The tech giant's knack for real estate also displayed in 2022, when he sold a magnificent San Francisco mansion valued at $31 million. Still, he holds onto a residential block in Palo Alto that covers half a city block. Be Sure To Like Real News Now on Facebook! https://www.facebook.com/RealNewsNowApp/ Despite these intriguing series of real estate moves by the tech leader, the representatives from Zuckerberg's team maintained silence and didn't respond immediately to the request for comments from The Post. The shroud of secrecy around these real estate shifts presents an intricate puzzle that only time will unravel. This strings of property transactions points to a broader trend of the tech elite, like Zuckerberg, remaining relatively flexible with their real estate investments. Picking up and offloading properties with haste, and often maintaining a level of privacy that leaves the public playing guessing games. Zuckerberg's deft and discreet moves around his real estate portfolio maintain the intrigue and speculation inherent in his high-profile life. Whether these shifts are part of a wider investment strategy, a simple reshuffling of assets, or tied to personal reasons, remain topics of conjecture. While the tech giant's real estate maneuvers raise both eyebrows and questions, they also quite adeptly highlight the realm of possibilities and maneuvers available in the world of luxury real estate. Undoubtedly these sort of real estate activities of the Silicon Valley elite provide a fascinating glimpse into how the other half lives. Parallels are often drawn with other tech heavyweights who showcase a knack for handling their realty portfolios with a similar level of complexity, privacy, and intrigue. As these stories unfold, they continue to paint a compelling picture of the lifestyles and business acumen of the world's leading tech magnates. To learn more about Don't Move Until You See It and get the free 5-day Conceptualizing Chess Series, head over to https://dontmoveuntilyousee.it/conceptualization FEN for today's exercise: 1q6/8/5b2/8/1n4p1/2p1Bk1p/5P2/5K1Q b - - 0 1 And the answer is... White has a Queen on h1. The lost piece must be a Queen in this puzzle. While a bishop could control the same squares, there is no legal way this position could be reached for a bishop. The bishop would have been on this same diagonal for Black's last move, meaning Black would have had to play something illegal to reach this position. A Queen however could move to h1 from h2 or g1 to deliver checkmate.

This was a very cool conversation with a kindred spirit, Dr David Wiss, where we do a deep dive into nutrition, especially as it pertains to mental health. David enrolled at California State University, Northridge where he earned a Master's of Science in Nutrition, Dietetics, and Food Science. This led to a dietetic internship at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) Medical Center where he received specialized training on their eating disorders unit. This experience sparked a deep interest in the role of nutrition and the nutritionist profession as part of mental health recovery. David became a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) in 2013 and founded Nutrition in Recovery, a group practice of RDNs specializing in the treatment of eating and substance use disorders. During this time, David developed a specialized nutrition curriculum that has been incorporated at more than fifty addiction treatment centers in Southern California and worldwide. In his nutritionist profession practice, David consults and develops nutrition protocols for clients in treatment. He also regularly conducts staff training for professionals and speaks at conferences on topics including disordered eating, gut health, and trauma-informed nutrition. In 2017, David received the “Excellence in Practice” award at the national Food and Nutrition Conference and Expo. Based on extensive clinical experience with clients in mental health recovery, he began collaborating with other experts in the field to publish book chapters and manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals. In 2017, David matriculated at UCLA's Fielding School of Public Health in the Community Health Sciences department, with a minor in Health Psychology. He earned his Doctor of Philosophy degree (Ph.D.) in 2022 by investigating the links between adverse childhood experiences and various mental health outcomes among socially disadvantaged men. During his doctoral training, Dr. Wiss published multiple peer-reviewed manuscripts in the fields of food addiction, eating disorders, substance use disorders, depression, trauma, and childhood sexual abuse. These papers have been published in high-impact journals such as Appetite, the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, Frontiers in Psychiatry, Public Health Nutrition, Nutrients, Eating and Weight Disorders, and others. In addition, as a health nutritionist, he has contributed multiple book chapters on topics such as binge eating and dietary restraint. Enclosed is a full link to his publications. Blogger couple Ilene and Gary Modica of Our Italian Journey share why they chose Lucca in Tuscany for their retirement home almost from the moment they entered this charming walled city. Lucca is a city on the Serchio river in Italy's Tuscany region. It's known for the well-preserved Renaissance walls encircling its historic city center and its cobblestone streets. Broad, tree-lined pathways along the tops of these massive 16th- and 17th-century ramparts are popular for strolling and cycling. Casa di Puccini, where the great opera composer was born, is now a house museum. - Google Food writer Mark Bittman says Lucca's "food is among Italy's most compelling -- almost certainly the best in Tuscany -- and the town is a draw in its own right. Enclosed by walls whose broad tops look out over the town's lovely towers and broad, calm piazzas on one side and park grounds on the other..." Lucca has everything within its walls: art, music, cycling, food, festivals...plus it's easy to get here!

Tune in to learn more about the ways what you wear can be a superpower in how we perceive ourselves and the world around us. Key Takeaways Our clothing choices can shape how we perceive ourselves and how others perceive us, affecting our confidence and interactions. Enclosed cognition is the idea that the clothes we wear can influence our thoughts, emotions, and behavior by triggering certain associations and expectations that we have with those clothes. By using clothing to create associations and shape our self-image, we can influence how we see ourselves, think, feel, and behave. This can also impact how others perceive us and the narrative that is built around us. Changing our style can lead to significant changes in our lives, as it is all interconnected. Therefore, it is important to ask ourselves what emotions and beliefs we want to cultivate about ourselves and choose our clothes accordingly. This concept is a core pillar within the school of self-image. In this podcast episode, Self-Image Coach Tonya Leigh, discusses how we can control the narrative of how we want to be perceived through our clothing and style choices. Enclosed cognition suggests that our clothes can trigger certain associations and expectations. By choosing clothes that align with our desired self-image, we can cultivate beliefs about ourselves and behave accordingly. Tonya emphasizes the importance of making associations between ourselves and our clothes first, before considering how others may perceive us. She also shares personal experiences of how her style choices have led people to associate her with certain places or qualities. This episode highlights the power of using clothing to transform our self-image and behavior. Timestamps: [00:01:40] Enclosed cognition and clothing. [00:05:11] Personal style.
