On this episode of Songs of Our Lives, it's Yann Novak! There's so many things Yann does that are important in my life - from his music (check out the upcoming “Voices of Theseus”!) and label to his supportive approach with artists - so it was so great to have this conversation. We get into the gravity of Anohni and the Johnsons, being surprised by Billie Eilish, Devendra Banhart's moment, claire rousay's music clicking, Rabbit in the Moon going supernova, losing love for a Flaming Lips classic, sharing music with a partner, getting hyped by Sleater Kinney, death by Joanna Newsom, and so much more!Listen to all of Yann's picks HERE“The Voices of Theseus”Dragon's Eye RecordingsSongs of Our Lives is a podcast series hosted by Brad Rose of Foxy Digitalis that explores the music that's made us and left a certain mark. As someone who enjoys the process of putting together mixes- specifically more conceptual ambient leaning mixes- I often think about how I would approach playing an event designed for sleep. I'm yet to play a set like this live, but I did tackle something similar in the Portals series by roughly mixing styles that aligned to specific sleep stages (eg, REM, deep etc). But in person, sleep is never as predictable as hypothetical sleep stages for a recorded mix, let alone the idea of a room full of people mirroring these stages at the same time. To approach an in-person set for sleep would be a daunting undertaking, but an extremely rewarding experience for both DJ and listener - the career highlight for an ambient DJ, maybe... They say the warm-up set is the hardest test for a DJ and I would tend to agree. But I'd love to see some of the world's best DJs execute 3.5 hours of music for a room full of people looking to do the exact opposite of dancing, or even listening for the entire duration… Sa Pa has executed this concept flawlessly. No stranger to the minutia and atmosphere needed to transport someone from a horizontal state into an elevated lucid dream, I can hardly think of anyone better to take control of such a situation than Berlin-based artist, Sa Pa. His latest release for Astral Industries (the undisputed label kings of lucid states no doubt) is the perfect example of transportive and psychedelic ambient music down to the finest grain of sound and texture. AI-33: Atmospheric Fragments by Sa Pa If Sa Pa's productions weren't enough to demonstrate his transportive power and worldbuilding tendencies, then his recent captures from his own Absurb Lustre events, or his mix for one of our 9128.live takeovers, may provide an additional glimpse of what to expect when he was given the reigns for an all-night sleep in event recently, in Leipzig.“For years I've kept a mental cache of what music would I'd love to play at a sleep in, but was never really sure if there'd be a chance, so small some dreams came true that night for me too - it was a pretty rare experience I'd say especially with everyone there really taking part in the concept”.It's not often we get the chance to host a set from an event that by its very nature, is designed to be experienced in person, but after several trials of this mix (on a plane, going to sleep, and waking up from sleep - and all states in between), the concept translates to an outstanding headphone session and the perfect concept for a defining moment in the isolatedmix series of sounds. “I think it was one of the deepest and most solitary DJing experiences I have ever been part of, and driving a three and half hour cloud through the pitch darkness was a beautifully liminal journey, caring for the dreams of those in the room, some 100-200 people or so”.A 3.5hr liminal state available in your own time and place, in the gentle hands and ears of Sa Pa, displaying the very essence of horizontal ambient music designed to immerse, weave and transport. Featuring tracks from, Luc Ferrari, Zenxen, Pinkcourtesyphone, cv313, Jason Lescalleet, Yann Novak, BJ Nilsen, Robert Henke, Rod Modell, Ryoji Ikeda, Steve Roach and Sa Pa, himself. Words from Sa Pa - ‘Diary of a Lonely DJ':There's something about gazing out of a train window or being 30-thousand feet high up in the troposphere, that evokes a feeling of what we try best to describe as liminality. With this in mind, Deutsche Bahn had me scuttling toward Leipzig from Berlin on a typically stark and windy day that could of been taken right out of a Wim Wenders classic; the treetops lining Urbanstraße on the way to Hauptbahnhoff looking as stripped and brittle as burnt skeletons in the snow. Some 8-to-10 degrees warmer in Saxony, I arrived at a city shrouded in mist, with the darkness of the early afternoon somehow made a touch warmer by that first Friday-feeling of the year. Onwards to Leipziger Baumwollspinnerei - a converted cotton mill where this evening's ‘Sleep In' would take place - the 14 tram would rumble past the pink and lilac glow of the city's opera house. Sleep Ins are no new thing, and to be in the arms of the proverbial morpheus with some 200 people in an industrial estate does have its abstract appeal, and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a fan of the concept. At something like 6PM, it was encouraging to see so many people arrive dragging their mattresses with them, some eight-hours before the witching hour. Tuning in to the event, and finding a little respite backstage, I drifted in and out of consciousness, occasionally breaking REM sleep to acknowledge the sounds of “Simple Headphone Mind” and Zoviet France's remix of Panasonic, reverberating in the hall. With a medley of lullabies soundtracking the evening so far, preparing selections too deep even for my own Absurd Lustre event, provided a much needed boost of waking life before taking to the couch in the DJ booth. Over the course of the next three-and-a-half hours, in near pitch-darkness, I was able to draw from a rare cache of non-music and atmosphere, embraced at large by a small flotilla of sleeping souls, leaving port to navigate themselves through the inner landscapes of a technicolour head trip. With only the dimmed lights of my equipment and an exit sign illuminating the room, safe to say, it was a resolutely profound DJing experience and deep journey into the estranged fields of time and space. There were moments at the helm where I felt like a small craft adrift in a sea of voluminous black, while paradoxically part of a delicate collective sub-consciousness, sailing through a dream-like abyss. As if bridging a void between the physical world and something beyond the imagination, it was truly a strangely isolated place.Listen on Soundcloud the ASIP Podcast or the 9128.live iOS and Android appDownload MP3 astrangelyisolatedplace · isolatedmix 125 - Sa Pa (Sleep In) The start of the event, as attendees bring in mattresses ready for the night and Sa Pa' set. Today's guest deejay is Cole Peters. I had the good fortune to meet Cole through Yann Novak (listen to Yann's mixes four Soundwave here). I asked Yann who he thought would share a mix with us, and he highly recommended Cole. I could have sent Cole an invitation to guest deejay on Soundwave without listening to a note of his music. I trust Yann's taste in music and artists that much. But of course, I listened to Cole's music. Yann was spot on. Cole's mix is a unique blend of electronic and organic elements, creating a captivating sonic landscape that will take you on a mesmerizing journey. It's okay if you lose yourself. That's part of the journey, too. Be sure to lose yourself in Cole's latest album, Traces Blurs Signs, where he continues to eschew categorization. Today's guest deejay is Rubén A. Tamayo, founder of Facade Electronics and Fax Music. I met Rubén through Yann Novak (listen to Yann's mixes for Soundwave here and here). Yann's a great guy with exquisite taste in music. Yann turned me on to Rosalía, who, according to Spotify, I listen to a lot. When I asked Yann who he thought would share a mix on Soundwave, he recommended Rubén. I spent an afternoon listing to music from Rubén's label for form's sake, but it was a foregone conclusion. I already knew I would have Rubén on the show solely based on Yann's opinion. I was not wrong, as Rubén's mix proves. I can feel winter coming to San Diego. The mornings are just a little bit chillier. Rubén's mix has been my companion for the last few weeks as I start my day. Supersadfish + Reptile's “Daybreak” provides a nice jolt as I make a cup of coffee, review email and review my tasks for the day. Rubén's mix has been the soundtrack for my mornings, and by the time we arrive at Subxet's “Blastoise,” I've been on an epic sonic journey. It's a great way to start the day. I highly recommend the experience. Join us next week when our guest deejay will be Benoît Pioulard. See you then. Today's guest deejay is Yann Novak. Yann guest deejayed on Soundwave last year, and it's a delight to have him back on the show. And it's not just because his mix is utterly fantastic, but because today's show reminds me that I've known Yann since 2009 when I showcased his label, Dragon's Eye Recordings, on solipsistic NATION. Not that I know Yann besides what I see him post on social media. But when I launched Soundwave, I reached out to many people through solipsistic NATION, and Yann was one of them. I like his label, and I respect Yann's thoughts about music. The mix he shared on Soundwave was beautiful and unexpected. Today's show is no less lovely and surprising. So, no, I don't really know Yann. But it's good to know people are creating, releasing, and sharing music because it needs to be heard. Yann included “A Trembling of Light” in his mix, which is from his recently released album, Reflections of a Gathering Storm. It sets the tone for today's show. If you like it, you might consider giving his album a listen, maybe even spend a few bucks on it. Maybe play it loud enough that the neighbors can hear it, like I did. Today's guest deejay is Raziel Panic. I know Raziel from way back. We're talking about the days when people would send cassette singles to radio stations for airplay. My memory is hazy, but I think I was aware that Raziel was part of the Boston music scene with his band You Shriek in the late 80s. Crazy. When I say know, I mean more win the sense I knew of Raziel. The circles we traveled overlapped. I even had You Shriek perform on my show on WMFO. But we never really knew each other. But thanks to social media, I get glimpses into Raziel's life through his Instagram account, usually in beautiful black and white photos. I extended Raziel an invitation to guest deejay on Soundwave and I was curious what I'd hear. Raziel is know for goth and industrial music, but that of course doesn't encompass all the music he listens enjoys. It's no incongruous that his mix ranges from Arvo Pärt to Einstürzende Neubauten to Kitaro. Marvelous stuff. But still a surprise. The You Shriek track Raziel included in his mix was never released on digital. Contact me if you'd like a download Raziel's track. Raziel has a digital release in the wings, and I'll let you know when it's available. I still don't know Raziel, but I hope to hang out with him next time I'm on the East Coast. Today's guest deejay is Yann Novak, the founder of Dragon's Eye Recordings. I met Yann when I showcased his label on solipsistic NATION. I discovered Yann's label through Mike Lazarev's music blog, Headphone Commute (if you enjoy Soundwave, you're going to love Headphone Commute). Yann curates a heady offer of music through Dragon's Eye Recordings featuring notable artists such as Pinkcourtesyphone (Richard Chartier), Genrietta, and Lawrence English. Some of the label's releases are whimsical, some challenging, and some so ephemeral that you might imagine you dreamt of hearing it. Recorded live as part of “Touch presents…” with Philip Jeck and Yann Novak in Amsterdam on 15th March 2018. Play loud!
Post-rave drives, bunk bed fevers, making a happening. The LA-based sound artist discusses three important albums.
The end of a year is a popular moment to release a (label) compilation. Sometimes to look back, sometimes to look ahead.... and sometimes just because it's compilation time. Here's an (incomplete!) overview of some recent compilations presenting hours (and more hours) of listening pleasure. VARIOUS ARTISTS - ILLUMINATIONS II Dronarivm kicks off with this New Year Charity Compilation. No less than 30 track and almost three hours of music, priced ridiculously low to begin with... but of course you will want to pay more because of the amount of music, ánd because the profits go to 4Paws for Ability, an organisation that 'enriches the lives of children with disabilities by training and placing quality, task-trained service dogs.' (You can also donate directly of course, but why would you when you're offered a batch of quality music in the process?) The thirty artists presented here show why Dronarivm has become one of the most important labels in the ambient/experimental electronic genre. It's an impressive array of which I will only mention a few names: Aaron Martin, Bruno Sanfilippo, Loscil, Jacaszek, Machinefabriek, Endless Melancholy, Legiac, Offthesky, Olan Mill, Sven Laux, Anne Chris Bakker, Antonymes, Giulio Aldinucci, Pleq, Hakobune, Pausal Chihei Hatakeyama. And that are just 17/30. Even more impressive is the fact that all these tracks are exclusive - they have not appeared on earlier releases before. So this is what we call a 'no-brainer'! If you missed the first (2017) edition of Illuminations with another 28 tracks, you can still download it. It is a Name-Your Price release, but I strongly suggest to double your donation for Illuminations II. Simply because. Illuminations II (The New Year 2018 charity compilation) by Various Artists VARIOUS ARTISTS - FROM HERE TO TRANQUILITY, VOL. 8: THE DARKENED PATH On a somewhat darker note, we find #8 in the From Here To Tranquility series on Silent Records, curated and founded by Kim Cascone. Not specifically an end-of-year release, by the way, but edition 8 in the From Here To Tranquility series. This edition 'addresses the pervasive darkness we find in the world today', and does so with 80 minutes of contemplative soundscapes with a retro-touch by Scott Gibbons, Kris Force, Chris Meloche, Dead Voices on Air, Michal Seta, Pragma, David Metcalfe, Legion Of Green Men, Aume, Meterpool, Mike Rooke and David Lee Myers. Not the most familiar names perhaps, and the music can be quite different in nature (a quiet atmospheric field recording track by Chris Meloche can easily be followed by a rather aggressive noise track from Dead Voices on Air), but you can simply count on Kim Cascone's experience in selecting quality sounds. From Here to Tranquility - Volume 8 (the darkened path) by Various Artists VARIOUS ARTISTS - STEEL - DRAGON'S EYE TWELFTH ANNIVERSARY Not exactly a year-in-retrospect compilation, but an album to celebrate the twelve years of existence since Yann Novak relaunched his father's record label Dragon's Eye Recordings. The 'steel' in the title is 'named after the traditional eleventh anniversary gift (due to miscalculation and a love for the cover art by Jake Muir)'. A 'variety of styles, processes, practices, techniques, and most importantly points of view' is presented in this Name-Your-Price download featuring unreleased tracks by artists that recently released work on the label. Such as: Steve Pacheco, Tobias Hellkvist, Robert Crouch, Yann Novak, Jake Muir, Fabio Perletta, Geneva Skeen, Mark Kate and wndfrm. 78 Minutes of sheer minimalist joy. Steel: Dragon's Eye Twelfth Anniversary by Various Artists VARIOUS ARTISTS - RUSTED TONE SAMPLER I Rusted Tone Recordings does not look back to 2017 because it did not exist in 2017. It is a new independent label, curated by James Armstrong, 'specialising in ambient, drone and experimental music'. Judged by this introduction sampler the label will definitely be worth keeping an eye on: it introduces artists that will be releasing albums on Rusted Tone in the coming year. Think: Darren Harper, James Osland, Wil Bolton, Green Kingdom, Spheruleus - along less familiar names like Gallery Six & Oblivia, Net, Kepier Widow, Saltings and Kevin Buchland. Suffices to say this introduction succeeds in raising interest for the label! This, too, is a Name-Your-Price download if you want. But please keep in mind that proceeds 'will go towards supporting physical releases and sustaining Rusted Tone Recordings.' Rusted Tone Recordings: Sampler Vol. 1 by Various Artists VARIOUS ARTISTS - GRENZWELLEN I A somewhat different beast (and with that I mean considerably less ambient) is this massive compilation supporting the German radio show Grenzwellen, hosted by Ecki Stieg and broadcasted on Radio Hannover. Grenzwellen started in 1987 so it exists for more than thirty years now! It can be heard every wednesday for three hours starting at 9 pm CET via the Radio Hannover livestream. But even if you can't listen to their show this compilation is a great introduction to the music that can be heard on this show. Almost 4 hours of all kinds of experimental/electronic music in a mix of well- and lesser-known artist. I won't mention them all, but here are just a few of the names that I recognise: Giulio Aldinucci, Gabi Delgado, Ulrich Schnauss, CEEYS, Marsen Jules Trio (with a 15 minute string version of Étoiles de la Nuit), Bersarin Quartett, Bartosz Dziadosz, Hecq, Arovane,Hans-Joachim Roedelius, Sven Laux, Sankt Otten, Markus Guentner, Richard Chartier, Hotel Neon. 31 Tracks, and most of them previously unreleased. Grenzwellen host and compilation curator Ecki Stieg advises to play the compilation in its entirety: "please listen in the order given. Don't use the random button!." Grenzwellen Eins by Grenzwellen VARIOUS ARTISTS - MUSIC FOR ELEVATORS And, while on the subject of massive compilation projects this one cannot stay unmentioned. Only recently I became aware of a series of (free download) releases by the Mahorka netlabel called "Music for Elevators." A nice reference to many ambient "Music for ..." releases, as well as to 'Elevator Music' - which is usually referring to anonymous 'Muzak'. The first edition of this series was released way back in 2002, followed by Vol. 2 in 2005, Vol. 3 in 2007, Vol. 4 in 2012. The three-part set Vol. 5, which is said to conclude the series, was released in 2017 (Part 1, Part 2, Part 3). You can still find the complete set online: the first four editions can be found on Archive.org (free downloads), the three-part Vol. 5 on Bandcamp (Name-Your-Price). So that is quite an impressive batch of unknown music to discover. Unknown - because in the tradition of netlabels, Mahorka presents the work of artists that are largely unknown - with the occasional exception depending on how 'deep' you are into the scene. "You are on board for a pushing all kinds of boundaries trip through what ambient music can be and what can be ambient music." 'Ambient' is not a very strict definition here, probably 'experimental electronic' would have been a more appropriate label. There are quite a few tracks that would probably scare the hell out of any ordinary citizen who got stuck in an elevator. But in a collection like this, everyone will find a lot of sounds to his/her liking! Music For Elevators Vol.5 (Part 1) by Various Artists
This is the second episode of the Disquietude podcast of ambient electronic music. All seven tracks of music are featured with the permission of the individual artists or, in one case, their record label: Naoyuki Sasanami, Geneva Skeen, Jeanann Dara and Jherek Bischoff, R. Beny, Bana Haffar, Scanner, and Yann Novak. The music is followed by commentary from the podcast’s San Francisco–based host, Marc Weidenbaum, and by a brief essay reflecting on the recording process.
