Our Marrakech walking tour continues in today's episode, as Azdean and local guide Youssef explore the historic Medina, visit the Ben Youssef Madrasa and conclude with a visit to the famous Majorelle Garden. In Part One, we made three stops, focusing around three sights on the south side of the Medina, or city centre: the Mellah (Jewish Quarter), the El Badi Palace, a stunning ruin that was once full of jewels, art and precious stones, and the Bahia Palace, which is still standing, and is one of the absolute must-sees of Marrakech.  Click here to find Part One of the audio tour!In Part Two, Youssef explains to us how medinas are organized, including their six essential components. He delves into the significance of Koranic schools, and describes the still-active public fountain and communal oven. Then, the winding path leads us to the lush embrace of the Majorelle Garden, which so many of our listeners and clients are keen to visit. It is truly an oasis amongst the hustle and energy of Marrakech. Youssef tells us who founded the gardens, the connection to Yves St-Laurent (who was not the founder but whose name is often attached to it), some tips for photography and the best visiting times. Did you know that the medina in Marrakech is one of the oldest inhabited cities in the country, dating back to the 11th Century, and was built to cater to the caravan trade, coming in across the mountains from the Sahara Desert? Imagine the mix of cultures, languages, food and goods that was all happening right here. And it still does, just in a more modern way! You can follow in the footsteps of ancient traders and contemporary tourists by booking a tour with Destination Morocco. PAT TRACEY: Grew up into a medical family in Trinidad and Tobago, which then migrated to Antigua. After a stint as a flight attendant, Pat burst onto the runway in 1980 as a professional fashion model for Issey Miyake - with whom she worked very closely, along with Kenzo, Gianfranco Ferre, Yves St Laurent, Chanel, Patrick Kelly, Giorgio Armani and others. Her work arena became Europe and Tokyo. She was photographed by the great photographer, Peter Lindbergh, for Italian Bazaar, and graced Essence and other magazines. She enjoyed commercial work with such clients as Avon, Clairol, Revlon, Clairol, Emanuel Ungaro, Harry Winston and Fendi, donning swimwear in the Sahara or bicycling in the Montana glaciers. She has been represented by agents such as Wilhelmina, Ford in New York City and top European agencies with present representation still by Wilhemina. Beside being a world traveler, a natural transition for her was to become a portrait, travel and lifestyle photographer, but she also continued her love for tie-dyeing which has extended into a successful tie-dye clothing line, called Mayaro, named after a beach in Trinidad, she frequented as a child. Still enjoying the constant work in the modeling realm, Pat also enjoys giving back, offering full service career coaching to aspiring models, as well as professional image and etiquette consultation. She helps them build their model portfolios and understand the business, with pageant headshots forming a large percentage of her business. Pat learned from an early age with her grandmother who managed a large orphanage in Trinidad, the importance of giving back to the youth and keeping one's feet firmly planted on the ground, Lessons that have sustained her throughout her life. Multi-faceted artist Barbara Colaciello began her career working with Andy Warhol for six years at the Factory in NYC as the Advertising Director of Interview Magazine."Warhol actually pursued me for over two years. I was an actress with a BFA from Rider University working as a saleswoman at the Yves St Laurent boutique. I didn't know anything about publishing. But Andy loved talkers. And I was funny."  - Barbara ColacielloWhile selling advertising for the Pope of Pop, Barbara continued to pursue her passion for acting and studied at Warren Robertson’s studio in NYC with acclaimed acting coach Larry Moss, and with  director Peter Flood at the Real Stage. After her Warhol years, Barbara worked with her brother, Vanity Fair Magazine writer Bob Colacello, for 10 years. She managed his many projects and acted as lead researcher/interviewer for his book, Holy Terror: Andy Warhol Close-Up.In 1993, Barbara's husband was offered a job in Jacksonville, FL. Barbara did not want to leave her family (built-in babysitters), her friends, and fabulous job. "I'll give it a year." Barbara moved to Ponte Vedra, Florida with her husband and two sons. Sensing a lack of culture in her golf and tennis-oriented beach community, she founded an acting program in her home called Inter-Act. It specialized in improvisation. Her desire to connect to community through the arts, led Barbara to host soirées at her home, inviting friends to experience innovative work by poets, dancers, musicians, and visual artists. These popular artistic evenings became the catalyst for Barbara's work for the next 20 years.  In 2005, she accepted the position as Education and Outreach Director of Players by the Sea Theater in Jacksonville Beach.Barbara has collaborated extensively with poet, playwright, and award-winning NPR radio host, Al Letson, as his acting coach and director/producer of many of his plays. In 2006, they were invited to bring Griot: He Who Speaks the Sweet Word to the NYC International Fringe Festival. It received rave reviews.Barbara's original one-woman show, Life on the Diagonal, had its NYC debut at Theater Lab in April of 2008. She then had the privilege to workshop it with Tony award-winning choreographer Patricia Birch.“Probably the most authentic piece of theatre I've ever seen. I'm so happy to know Barbara Colaciello, and happy to live on the diagonal.”  ~ Daniel Austin, actor, director, educatorLife  on the Diagonal celebrates life’s mysteries and imperfections with  humor, sexuality and a little A.D.D. madness. Seamlessly integrating  storytelling, and spoken word with her original music, Colaciello takes  her listeners on an intense, yet funny journey through an  experience-strewn landscape, into and beyond the “land of should”.In 2010, Players by the Sea and the Cummer Museum of Arts and Gardens commissioned Barbara to research, write, and perform a solo show about the museum's founder, Ninah May Holden Cummer for the museum's 50th anniversary.Barbara's company, Improv to the Rescue, housed at BABS'LAB, specializes in experiential and creative learning to enhance communication skills, develop storytellers and encourage collaboration through workshops, classes and performances.

Jordan DeVries: Yes. User Exerpience Really Is THAT Important     This… ‘stuff’? Oh… okay. I see. You think this has nothing to do with you.   You go to your closet and you select out, oh I don’t know, that lumpy blue sweater, for instance, because you’re trying to tell the world that you take yourself too seriously to care about what you put on your back. But what you don’t know is that that sweater is not just blue, it’s not turquoise, it’s not lapis, it’s actually cerulean.   You’re also blindly unaware of the fact that in 2002, Oscar de la Renta did a collection of cerulean gowns. And then I think it was Yves St Laurent, wasn’t it, who showed cerulean military jackets? And then cerulean quickly showed up in the collections of eight different designers. Then it filtered down through the department stores and then trickled on down into some tragic “casual corner” where you, no doubt, fished it out of some clearance bin. However, that blue represents millions of dollars and countless jobs and so it’s sort of comical how you think that you’ve made a choice that exempts you from the fashion industry when, in fact, you’re wearing the sweater that was selected for you by the people in this room. From a pile of “stuff.”    -- Miranda Priestly; The Devil Wears Prada, 2006   Think of something in your life that works well. It really works. There are a couple of ways to consider this thing. First: it is simply delightful. Whatever you do with it makes you feel happy… or better… or just some kind of positive emotion toward this thing. It could be a device. It could be your car. It could be an evening out at your favorite restaurant. It could be a lot of things. Second: it just works. It works so well, so consistently, so easily that you really don’t even consider it. It might be a motion sensing light in your kitchen. It might be a stop sign. It might be a lightswitch.   What these things have in common is superior design which leads to gratifying User Experience.   We all have User Experiences in our lives that run the spectrum from surprisingly fun and wonderful to grating and dread-inducing. While many of us enjoy traveling, few of us would consider the queue at TSA to be part of the trip that we look forward to. However, consider the options without the design of airport security and things start to look a little different.   Many of us don’t take the time to consider the surrounding work that is done to ensure that when we use A Thing, we get the most out of our experience. Many of us don’t realize how much research and development goes into creating a smooth, satisfying User Experience. Many of us may not even realize that there are some very special people who are experts at crafting the intersection between creators of A Thing and users of A Thing.   Matt sits down with Jordan Devries, Director of User Experience at Brave UX to discuss what goes into designing a product or service or solution that will provide the maximum positive User Experience. And they might talk about why Legos are the greatest UX ever made. What does this have to do with security? Stick around…   About Jordan DeVries     Jordan DeVries (@theastralj) is the Director of User Experience at Brave UX. With a background in design, animation, code, and content, Jordan guides projects through both information architecture and visual design with a specialization in complex interfaces for desktop, mobile and web.   He did his undergrad work at Carnegie Mellon where he earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering.   Jordan’s teammates at Brave UX consider him a Pop Culture guru and random fact machine. He’s also a bit of a Lego enthusiast… to put it mildly.   About Matt Stephenson       Insecurity Podcast host Matt Stephenson (@packmatt73) leads the broadcast media team at Cylance, which puts him in front of crowds, cameras, and microphones all over the world.
