Emma speaks with Trevor Aaronson, contributing writer at The Intercept, to discuss his recent podcast Alphabet Boys. Then, she's joined by freelance journalist Zachary A. Siegel, to discuss his recent coverage in Bolts Magazine of the Chicago mayoral race. First, Emma runs through updates on decreasing unemployment filings, Trump's visit to East Palestine – beating out both Biden and Buttigieg – Norfolk Southern coming to an agreement with their unions, the ADL study on all of last years extremist killing coming from the Right wing, Israel's bombing of the Gaza strip, early polling for Feinstein's vacated CA Senate seat, and more, before diving into the Democrats' failure to respond (in any capacity) to the disaster in East Palestine and the revelation of child labor abuses at Packers Sanitation Services Inc. Trevor Aaronson then joins as he dives right into the history of the FBI's infiltration of left-wing political and civil rights movements, a tactic foundational to the Bureau's Hooverian ideology, beginning with the Counter-Intelligence Program (COINTELPRO) of the 1950s that ran through the ‘70s, serving to undermine and endanger groups like the Black Panther Party and American Indian Movement and those that served as community leaders, and moving through Senator Frank Church's investigation into and disbandment of this program and its horrendous abuses. Next, Aaronson walks through the post-Church Committee development of the FBI, as they somewhat took on a reserved role until the birth of the War on Terror, and a mass influx of funding for domestic political infiltration coming after the 9/11 terror attacks, and creating a renaissance of the FBI's right to surveil and infiltrate without a criminal predicate. Trevor then looks to the protests of summer 2020 as he takes Emma through the story of Mickey Windecker, a self-proclaimed mercenary recruited by the FBI to infiltrate and inform on left-wing activists groups planning protests in Denver in the wake of the murder of George Floyd, employing violence, intimidation, and intra-community conspiracy to undermine and entrap Black anti-racist activists into illegal acts, resulting of the arrest of one protestor for the FBI-funded purchasing of weapons for the FBI informant, who would then give said weapon back to the FBI. After briefly touching on Jim Jordan and the GOP's “Church Committee 2.0” and why we must push back against the revisionist narrative that the FBI only (or even primarily) targets the right wing, Emma and Trevor wrap up the interview by tackling the likelihood that these tactics were also prevalent outside of Denver, and the future of his reporting with “Alphabet Boys.” And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Matt Binder and Brandon Sutton as they discuss Donald Trump's visit to an East Palestine McDonalds, the Democrats' obsession with evacuating from any areas where things go a little wrong for them, and why DeSantis' crime tour won't do much for his fight against Trump. Ben from Texas dives into his experiences in the struggling local news world, the crew covers pro-life Alaska State Rep. David Eastman's statements on why child abuse ending in murder is good for society, actually, and why that's not super abnormal for US politics. Bill Maher hosts Andrew Sullivan to discuss why trans rights are actually about forcing you to eat pussy and suck dick no matter what you want to do, Jordan Peterson explores why trans people are an affront to his god, and Mike from CA takes on the relationship between child labor and dangerous working conditions, plus, your calls and IMs! Zach Siegel is one of our most respected and prolific journalists on addiction and drug policy. He is also a thoughtful, introspective soul who thinks deeply about his own history of opioid addiction. In his many writings, he has often referenced that personal history, but he's never really had the chance to tell his own addiction story from start to finish. Until now! Listen to this episode of Flourishing After Addiction to hear Zach's origin story, plus a deep dive into his recent cover story in Harper's magazine about surgery for opioid addiction.Zach and I talked about some enlightening moments along his path, including the role of Suboxone in his treatment, anti-medication stigma, as well some big questions about identity: what does it mean to say you're in recovery, and how does Zach make sense of that idea in his own life?We also focus in on his recent, fascinating Harper's story: a feature about deep brain stimulation surgery for addiction. In the piece, he describes how people with serious, intractable addictions receive this (technically) non-invasive surgery--a kind of neuroscience advance I myself researched as part of a fellowship in medical school. It's a terrific story in its own right, but it also invokes some big themes, such as the purposes of addiction treatment, or how human factors like relationships, care, and hope continue to be relevant even in what seems like the most reductionist biomedical treatment settings.Zachary A. Siegel is a freelance journalist and researcher living in Chicago. His work focuses on public health, mental health, and the criminal-legal system; he also reviews books, movies, and TV shows, on occasion; and he co-writes Substance, a newsletter about drugs and crime, with journalist Tana Ganeva. Only 13 percent of Americans receive treatment for substance abuse disorder. The reasons for this alarming gap are, like the causes of addiction itself, multifarious. In West Virginia, the state hardest-hit by the opioid epidemic—where the number of deaths outpaces births—four people who struggled with long-term addiction underwent an experimental procedure in which a microchip was implanted to deliver electrical shocks to the part of the brain involved with processing desire, motivation, and reinforcement. For the September issue, Zachary Siegel, himself a recovered opioid addict, spoke with two participants from the surgical trial. In this episode, Siegel and host Violet Lucca discuss the shortcomings of abstinence-only treatment, received wisdom about sobriety and relapse, issues raised by deep-brain stimulation, the lack of urgency around the opioid crisis, and much more. At the top of the first hour, Zachary Siegel, freelance journalist and a journalism fellow at Northeastern University's Health in Justice Action Lab, joins John and Michelle to talk about Biden's Harm Reduction Bill. The measure is not without controversy. A provision provides funding for things like needle exchange programs for individuals suffering from drug addiction. Many Republicans have voiced opposition to the $30 million health care bill. Zachary explains why the bill should pass and why it matters, and points out that the goal should be to focus on reducing the demand for opioids as they are potent relievers of emotional and physical pain. Then, the Misfits were joined by Dr. Jack Rasmus. He's a professor in both the economics and political science departments at St. Mary's University, where he focuses on economic inequities. He's most recently the author of the book "Epic Recession and Global Financial Crisis." He joins Michelle and John to discuss the latest report that dropped today indicating a surge in inflation. Dr. Rasmus points out that the recent spike in price inflation for fuel, meat and baked goods is a result of price gouging by monopolistic corporations. It is more about corporate greed than the narrative of supply shortages.Next, Dr. Peter Kuznick called into the show. He's a professor of history and director of the Nuclear Studies Institute at American University in Washington, and he's an expert on 20th century history. He's the author of many books, including "The Untold History of the United States" and "Beyond the Laboratory: Scientists as Political Activists in 1930s America." Dr. Kuznick came on the show to discuss the historical context of NATO expansion into Eastern Europe and how we got to the recent tensions with Russia regarding Ukraine.Ron Clewer, Illinois market president for Gorman & Company and affordable housing advocate, joined John and Michelle for the last segment of the show to talk about the recent escalation of home prices, as well as falling supply and lack of affordable housing. Clewer does not see the market turning back anytime soon, and says not only will the market continue to see a rise in demand for housing, but that the building of affordable housing is a workforce solution. Since the beginning of the so-called War on Drugs, authorities in the United States have viewed drugs not as a public health issue but one of crime, vice and violence, requiring the funding and mobilization not of medical officials but police, DEA agents and a sprawling network of paramilitary actors. In response, corporate media and its culture of parasitic, “ride-along” coverage has evolved in parallel taking this same line, reflecting the state’s approach rather than influencing or challenging it. “Drug stories,” with rare exception, fall under the “crime” reporting rubric rather than being seen as stories to be covered by reporters familiar with the actual science of drugs and addiction - skirting empiricism for police stenography and cartoon narratives replete with good guys and bad guys. The result: a feedback loop of a police and federal government determined to keep the War on Drugs in their domain, shaping a media narrative that manufactures and manipulates the public’s and lawmakers’ perception of drugs and drug-related crime. But what if there’s another way? Increasingly, public health advocates and journalists have been pushing back, trying to demilitarize not just the public approach to drugs but how they’re covered in the media. On this episode, we explore how we got to this point––where drugs are viewed as an enemy force to be combated with violence and prisons––and highlight ways people are trying to fundamentally rewire the way we talk about the problems of drugs and addiction.
