It's Casual Friday! Sam and Emma host Natalie Shure, columnist at the New Republic and health policy expert, to discuss developments in federal health policy to expect with upcoming legislation and Supreme Court decisions. They begin with the state of Roe v. Wade, as the American public waits for a decision on the Mississippi law banning abortion after fifteen weeks. They begin by simply looking at what a conservative Supreme Court means, with the Federalist Society having spent decades building a conservative force from the Circuit Courts up, with abortion as the primary litmus test, and how this can very easily counter the belief that Chief Justice Roberts will act as a counterbalance to the 6-3 conservative majority. After touching on the activist nature of this specific Court and how far they're willing to take this decision, Natalie, Emma, and Sam take on the effective impact of an overturn of Roe v. Wade, looking at the clearly classed boundaries between who can get around regional prohibitions and who cannot afford it. Next, Natalie walks Sam and Emma through the insulin copay caps in the Build Back Better bill, both exploring the incredibly important development that this represents, and how the general disaster that is our healthcare system leaves countless gaps where Americans will be left carrying the full freight price. They wrap up the interview by exploring the recent developments regarding the “Remain in Mexico” policy's reinstatement, touching on the Biden administration's representing the Democrats desire to reduce public criticism on immigration, despite campaign rhetoric, using the Courts as a cop-out of his promises, just as he recently did with domestic fracking. After giving some airtime to the upcoming Big Live, Sam and Emma also cover developments in job growth, and Lauren Fox keeps Kyrsten Sinema on her toes by not asking a single relevant follow-up question. And in the Fun Half: Kowalski from Nebraska clarifies some legal questions on the upcoming Roe v. Wade SCOTUS decision, Ben Shapiro reminds Democrats to calm down about abortion using his knowledge about the bone-dry vaginal reproductive system, and Kofi from PA discusses some anti-privatization wins. Emma talks Real Housewives, Tucker Carlson thanks Hunter Biden for passing on his legacy to his son, Buckley Carlson, and Donald Trump and Mike Pence make some statements on their legacy, in picture book form and insurrection-denial, respectively. Emma reminds us that repressed religious fanaticism isn't cool, and Irvin from GA leaves us with some kind, if pessimistic, words, plus, your calls and IMs! In late 2016, staff at the American Embassy in Havana began hearing strange noises and experiencing odd symptoms: headaches, nausea, dizziness. Had they been targeted by a secret weapon, perhaps deployed by Russia? Or was there some other explanation for the ailments? Hosts Laura Marsh and Alex Pareene talk to four people who have closely followed Havana syndrome, as it came to be known: Jack Hitt, who covered the story for Vanity Fair in 2019; Tim Weiner, author of The Folly and the Glory: America, Russia, and Political Warfare 1945–2020; Adam Gaffney, a physician; and Natalie Shure, a columnist for TNR who covers health policy. What was the diplomatic context in which Havana syndrome appeared? Why is the secret weapon theory so attractive? And is there a likelier explanation for the mysterious illness? The show, which originally aired in February 2021, has been updated to account for more recent developments. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

In late 2016, staff at the American embassy in Havana began hearing strange noises and experiencing a range of odd symptoms: headaches, dizziness, ringing in the ears. Suspicion arose that they had been targets of a secret weapon. In the years since, doctors, scientists, journalists, and government officials have tried—with limited success—to get to the bottom of the illness that came to be known as Havana Syndrome. On Episode 24 of The Politics of Everything, hosts Laura Marsh and Alex Pareene talk to four people who have followed the story closely: Jack Hitt, who covered it for Vanity Fair; Tim Weiner, the author of The Folly and the Glory: America, Russia, and Political Warfare 1945-2020; Adam Gaffney, a physician; and the journalist Natalie Shure. Meagan Day, Natalie Shure, and Alissa Quart reflect with Suzi Weissman on the toxicity — and banality — of the Brett Kavanaugh confirmation to the Supreme Court. We look at the way the contentious, emotional hearings exposed the fault lines between gender, privilege, class, and politics in the US — and ask why the Democrats have been so meek, diffident, and ineffective in the face of the Republican Party’s disciplined march to impose the future, violating every norm to get an extreme right-wing bloc on the Supreme Court. We also look at what that means for the fightback. Natalie Shure looks at the Federalist Society and their influence and politics that go beyond gender justice to the very defining characteristics of Kavanaugh’s ideology and the political movement that groomed him. Alissa Quart, author of Squeezed: Why Our Families Can't Afford America writes about class privilege and the women who are invisible to Kavanaugh and his class. Christine Blasey Ford is heard, but betrays her class by stepping forward, whereas the testimony of Debbie Ramirez, Julie Swetnick, and thousands of other women workers are disregarded.

Healthcare marketplaces,” “private insurers competing for your business” “insurance subsidies,” For years, Democrats bet big on framing the healthcare debate using technocratic, capitalist terms––they weren’t going to radically change the system of healthcare, simply accent the existing private insurance-based model making things “smarter,” “easier,” more “tech-driven.” As the Affordable Care Act faces continued right-wing attacks and liberal-leaning activists increasingly look to single-payer, efforts to radically shift the healthcare system require--before they can really go anywhere--a radical shift in how we talk about healthcare. On this episode, we ask: How can activists rewire the public’s brains when it comes to the topic of healthcare? How can the rhetorical tics of the past be retired, and how can the conversation about healthcare shift from a technical problem to a moral imperative? We are joined by researcher and writer Natalie Shure.
