Hosts: Erin Rider and Adam Gardiner  Pete Hegseth faces tough questions in Senate confirmation hearing  Facing difficult, pressing questions from Democrats and support, praise from Republicans, President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for Defense Secretary faced a long hearing today during his Senate confirmation hearing. Pete Hegseth continued his calls for change at the top of the Defense Department while also fending off attacks on his personal character. The Inside Sources hosts kick off the show with their thoughts on the hearing.    Reports: Draft cease fire agreement reached between Hamas and Israel  There are reports today that Israeli and Hamas officials are close to agreeing on a cease fire in Gaza. Inside Sources’ host Adam Gardiner thinks the agreement gives a lot more to Hamas than what Israel is giving in return. He describes his reasoning and co-host Erin Rider shares her thoughts on the points in the draft agreement.    On the Hill 2025: Previewing legislation on ballot initiatives and referenda  Utah’s Legislative General Session begins in one week. One topic that’s bound to be discussed is elections. State Representative Jennifer Dailey-Provost is working on a bill that would streamline how initiatives and referenda are written for the ballot. Part of that includes the inclusion of a summary for people signing initiative packets. Rep. Dailey-Provost joins Inside Sources to give more insight into her bill.    Lawmakers surprised by high rates of road rage in Utah  A new road rage law went into effect six months ago and in the time since, dozens and dozens of drivers have faced enhanced charges as a result. The sheer number of incidents have surprised Utah lawmakers who worked on the bills last year. Hosts Adam Gardiner and Erin Rider discuss whether the government can change the culture of road rage.    Special counsel, prosecutor reports released on Hunter Biden, Donald Trump  Special prosecutor David Weiss has released the results of his investigation into Hunter Biden, criticizing President Biden for his pushback on the investigation. At the same time, special counsel Jack Smith has begun releasing his report into President-elect Donald Trump’s efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election. The Inside Sources hosts have some strong feelings about these reports; they share them in this segment.    Jan. 6 Congressional Committee seeking preemptive pardons  Several outspoken critics of now President-elect Donald Trump have voiced concerns that the incoming President may go after them for their critiques. Among those are several current and former members of Congress who served on the January 6 committee. Now, reports say some of those committee members are seeking preemptive pardons from President Biden.    Group working on Constitutional Amendment to limit money in election  Look on social media around election time, and you’re bound to see a lot of posts from folks complaining about the amount of money involved in politics. Since the Citizens United decision in 2010, more and more money has poured into American politics. Now, a new group hopes to pass a Constitutional Amendment limiting campaign finances. Jeff Clements, CEO of American Promise joins Inside Sources to discuss more about the initiative.    TikTok ‘refugees’ flocking to new Chinese app  TikTok inches closer to the deadline to sell or be banned. Ahead of that, ‘TikTok refugees’ are moving to another app – a fully Chinese app nicknamed “RedNote.” Andy Cupp, Inside Sources Executive Producer joins the conversation on data privacy and security, and whether Millennials even care who has their data nowadays.

After the Dobbs decision that overturned Roe v. Wade, and for many years before, Florida served as an abortion access point for many people in the South. But with changing judicial interpretation of “privacy” in the state, access to abortion in Florida has shifted. Laura Goodhue, Executive Director of Florida Alliance of Planned Parenthood Affiliates, sits down to talk with us about the status of abortion access in Florida and the outcome of the state ballot initiative in the November 2024 election. After the passage of S.B. 8 in Texas and the overturning of Roe, clinics in the northern area of Florida saw a quadrupled number of patients coming in from out of state seeking care. In May 2024, Florida passed a 6-week abortion ban, which has drastically impacted access for both Floridians and those traveling for abortion care. This year's ballot initiative was aimed at passing a citizen-led Constitutional amendment clarifying that abortion is a decision to be left to a doctor and patient. It passed by 57%; but the current rule in Florida requires a 60% majority vote for the initiative to pass, so it did not go into effect. Ballot initiative would undo Washington's landmark climate law

Washington and Oregon voters have already begun casting their ballots in the November general election. In Washington, the statewide contests include races to elect a new governor and attorney general and four ballot measures, including Initiative 2117.  If approved, it would repeal Washington’s landmark law targeting greenhouse gas emissions, the Climate Commitment Act. The law establishes a cap-and-invest program which requires refineries and other large polluters to purchase allowances equal to the carbon emissions they generate, while phasing out emissions by 95% by 2050. More than $2 billion has been raised since the CCA took effect last January to fund programs ranging from making transit free for youth to expanding EV charging infrastructure.   Let’s Go Washington, the group behind I-2117 and the other state measures on the ballot this year, claims the law creates a “hidden gas tax” for consumers and is to blame for the state’s high gas prices. Let’s Go Washington is largely financed by Brian Heywood, a hedge fund manager who has questioned the wisdom of cutting carbon emissions.  Joining us to debate I-2117 are Washington state Senator Joe Nguyen who represents the 34th District and is chair of the Environment, Energy & Technology Committee, and Todd Myers, Vice president of research at the Washington Policy Center.

It was nearing summer temperatures on this early June primary voting day outside a polling station in Washington, DC. Lisa Rice, official Proposer of Initiative 83, is wearing a sandwich board with the message, “Ask Me Why I Can't Vote Today?” “Why can't you vote today?” asks a woman on her way to vote. “Because I'm an independent,” Lisa replies. “ I'm not affiliated with the Democratic party or the Republican party and we're barred from voting in the primary…” “All day people came up to me and asked at every polling place,” Lisa tells us in this extended episode introducing several members of the Make All Votes Count DC team. “So people definitely wanted to know why and it was great conversations all day long.” We also meet Philip Pannell, Make All Vote Votes Count Treasurer, on this episode. A long time Democratic Party official and activist, Philip was widely recognized at the Capital Pride Parade where we met him. Yet despite his storied credentials, Philip's encountered no small amount of negative reaction to his support for Initiative 83 from longtime Democratic Party colleagues. “Independents are pretty much left out of the decision making because all the action is pretty much in the Democratic Party,” Philip tells us, adding he still believes the Democratic party is the best vehicle for opportunity and justice. “They like to say that if you want to participate in our primary, you have to be a Democrat. That's not forward of thinking, that's not bringing more people in.” Kenyatta Smith is a District Outreach Coordinator for the predominantly African American areas in East D.C, where gentrification creates added challenges for Initiative 83 outreach. “I want to keep it black too,” Kenyatta confides. “I want us to be in power still. I feel strongly about that. But I also want to challenge my community to educate themselves on something new.” Meet these and other members of the Make All Votes Count DC team this episode, another in our series on the record number of non-partisan election reform initiatives in play for the 2024 election. And learn how leadership and teamwork have come together behind the Initiative 83 effort, now in its final stages of signature collection for the November 2024 Washington DC voter ballot.  SHOW NOTES Our Guests: From Make All Votes Count DC: Lisa D.
