In the midst of WWII, conflict broke out in Los Angeles between members of the navy and Mexican American youth stemming from tensions from a naval base being built over a primarily Mexican community and the young people in the community flaunting zoot suits that defied rationing laws. In 1943 these tensions spilled over into violence as thousands of navy sailors began to attack anyone the could find wearing a zoot suit or other clothing that made them appear related to the pachuco youth culture movement. Take a listen and learn about the real Zoot Suit Riots.
If you've been listening to the Pit since the beginning, you may recognize the guest on this episode… Neil Vaughn Lawerence was an integral part of many of our episodes in season one, as well as coming up with some fantastic commercial ideas much to our chagrin. Besides hanging out with us, Vaughn knocks it out the park with his mastery in multi-genre production. In today's episode, we talk hot honey, Pokemon, and cat cones. We also hear about the most underrated states in the land of hip hop as well as a spelunking into the 1997 hit song, Zoot Suit Riot by the Cherry Poppin' Daddies.Greenwood Cider Co.Press Then Press - Out of State DistributionSomething About You - Araless (Vinyl Release)EtsyPatreonLinktreeInstagram:@greenwoodcider@ruining_your.childhood@feral_williams@aralessbmnFind us on twitter:@nostalgiapit@madshroommc@thehashtronaut@araless

Libby Cudmore was our first guest on The Record Player. Sort of.Here's the thing -- as we were batting around the ideas for the podcast which became this one, we made up a spreadsheet and started writing down albums that we wanted to discuss. Then we began to think about people who would be fun to discuss those albums with.We reached out to Libby in November of 2021 and quickly had her committed to discuss a particular album. Flash forward more than a year and we're here to discuss a completely different album with Libby. It was such a thrill to discuss Zoot Suit Riot: The Swingin' Hits of the Cherry Poppin' Daddies with Libby and she came armed and ready times one thousand. She made us a playlist, Consider the Daddies, which we are linking here for your listening pleasure. It was everything, as your ears will reveal to you after you're finished listening.Quick disclaimer: We just kind of logged in and all started talking. A proper intro of Libby arrives about 10 minutes or so into our discussion. If you can imagine that you walked into a local establishment and we were already there deep in conversation, that's kind how this one unfolded. However you think you feel about the Daddies right now, leave those feelings at the door. Listen to Libby's playlist, listen to this episode and get yourself a new favorite band.As far as today's episode, we dig through a lot of topics -- including how Libby's own writing was inspired by the Daddies. We had a blast and look forward to our next round with Team Cudmore. Thanks as always for listening!By the way, if you enjoy these episodes, how 'bout checking out our Patreon? We appreciate it and we'd love to have you as a member of the club!
Contestants: Anu Kashyap, Dan Feitel, Chris OttolinoWelcome to 2022! It's our first episode recorded since May 2021. (If you're curious what's been going on in the interim, feel free to check out the streaming show I attempted to launch: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLYyq5QTgHTmLfy4kyrnM7j7fHz87ohqSy .) A former National Spelling Bee champion joins me alongside two frequent quizzing teammates, one of whom is hoping to make up for his paper-thin loss in E30, so of course the banter flies thick as we cover (among other things) the joy of spelling, the history of Pixar, the fantasy of football, the Silver Age of Comics, and also for some reason ABC's Big Sky, despite no one picking it as a topic.Yes, like an NFL player who gets a PhD in mathematics from MIT, at RECREATIONAL THINKING we don't believe in disciplinary boundaries. So if you're curious about the non-fun kind of Zoot Suit Riot ... if you want to know which '90s alt-rock icon tells a lie in the very first line of her most famous song ... if you remember Microsoft's short-lived "Ms. Dewey" ... oh, and if you'd like to learn about the NFL player who got a PhD in mathematics from MIT, then this episode is for you. Gabe and Navid chat with Rachael Young (Comedy!, Jewel Rider) about her least favorite song, Cherry Poppin' Daddies' Zoot Suit Riot. Pull this episode through your coal black hair. Riot!
Seth and Marc crack open the ancient tomes and give you a bit of a history lesson as they school you on the REAL meaning of Zoot Suit Riot. Then, they go over the shitty lyrics of the real song and talk about how singer Steve Perry (Steeve Perry) didn't really seem to care about what really happened or to let you know... just to use that catchy title. Blow, daddy!

Deanna shares with Chris how relaxing it is to go the salon and have someone else fancy up your hair. Then they chat about their weekend festivities. Last weekend had Chris pulling his "moving gloves" out of retirement twice, and this weekend's wedding of a friend (and loyal listener) is sure to be a Zoot Suit Riot. Then Deanna takes us to Shanghai, China where she and Chris spend the week lending a helping hand to Buddhist monk Zhi Xiang at the Bao'en Temple. It's there that they learn all about him, his mission, and just how special of a place this truly is because of the difference he is making. It's a place where THE WORLD WILL BE CHANGED FOREVER. This week we are...smoking?! That's right, we're tackling the mid-seminal Jim Carrey romp THE MASK. Yes we know it is not a spoof movie, but hey, Mr. Carrey does a few whacky impressions at least?!! Then, Scott presents the Cherry Poppin' Daddies' iconic ZOOT SUIT RIOT and teaches us all about the real life events that inspired the song. I love learning! Finally, Marty takes us home as he asks us a few trivia questions from the famous movie trivia game SCENE IT?
Ross and Jessie discuss the masterminds behind the on-hold song we all know and why they have life figured out, Ross talks about a lady at his Crossfit who listens to “Zoot Suit Riot” by the Cherry Poppin’ Daddies as her hype song, they chat about how there are some rap artists who have sounded the same album after album, and Jables ends the show with a double Crime Corner featuring an eel up someone’s a** and a helium charged d**k explosion accident. www.ghostbed.com/drinkinbros

D.C. United got a valuable point out of New York City FC, and Filibuster is here to break it down before we all get blown away by possible Hurricanes (unless we defeat them with music). We talk about our feeling on the bunkering draw, how they prevented NYCFC from having many good chances, and how Steven Birnbaum was really really great. We also discuss the terrible performance of Kevin Stott, the lineup with so many people missing and what that means for tomorrow's game, and check in on Chris Durkin. In the second segment we talk about both Minnesota United and the New York Red Bulls, breaking down the points that D.C. United is going to need to take from both of them. The team will have the advantage of some missing players coming back, so we also wonder how they might fit back in and what their opponents' absences will mean for these games. Give it a listen!
Thom sits down to talk to his friend and mentor Howard Libes. Howard was the manager for the Cherry Poppin’ Daddies during the explosion of the Zoot Suit Riot album and the band getting signed to Mojo Records. Howard talks about why he ended up in Eugene and how the artist collective used to include a slew of anyone participating in creating art: Musicians, painters and writers. This got Howard into the musical circles with Steve Perry who formed the Daddies and went on to national success with his music. Howard tells some captivating stories and offers insight into the music industry from back in the 90’s. Thom and Howard begin the comparing and contrasting in this episode, but do most of that in Part 2 which will be out next week. Season 2! I talk to returning guest Cahn Curtis about swing revivalists Cherry Poppin' Daddies' "Zoot Suit Riot" and Brian Setzer's Stray Cats' "Rock This Town." We discuss the swing revival of the 90's, whether or not Stray Cats are punk (they're not), and argue about the merits of revisionist Americana. Happy New Year!
