Coming to you from Texas, Before Cinema is just three brothers who love talking about movies and pop culture. You'll catch us making lists, reviewing films, and much more from a unique, accessible perspective. You can find us on twitter at @BeforeCinemaPod!
After life got busy for a while for the guys, they're back to talk about what they watched/caught up with when they had time to spare. Discussed in today's episode:- The Bear (Hulu)- Cyberpunk: Edgerunners (Netflix)- The Last of Us teaser trailer (HBO)- Deadpool/Wolverine teaser trailer (theatrical)
The guys catch up after a short break to talk about Bullet Train, The Gray Man, Top Gun: Maverick and Stranger Things 4...amongst other things.
The guys are back again after another small break in the programming schedule! Today, they talk about the recent season of Stranger Things, a patient-viewer's perspective after their first time viewing of Fleabag, and the TV shows they would use to to teach a screenwriting class. They just talk about these topics in reverse order...
In 2008, the American Film Institute (aka the AFI) unveiled a series of lists ranking their choices for the Top 10 greatest films in 10 different genres. 14 years later, the guys think it's due for an update. So today, the guys discuss what films they would include in their own handpicked genres. But there's just one thing: they "invented" their own genres, so as to be as inclusive to as many films as possible.
After another brief delay, the guys are back to catch up with all they've watched since the last episode. Some topics that were talked about (in chronological order):- Catching up on life events- Dr. Strange and the terrible, horrible, no good, very bad moviegoing experience- Men- A different look at Batman (1989)Google drive link featuring the movie stills in question (credit to Josh from Canada for bringing this to Luke's attention):https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1lV7m2QvYiPxWbUwqAIDeVkvQr0tGac7C?usp=sharing
Life got busy for the guys, forcing them to have to postpone the past two weeks. But now they're back, and to ease in to the groove of things, the guys take it easy and spend the episode catching up on what they watched and what news happened while they were gone.Stuff discussed on today's light-welcome-back episode:- Netflix's drop in subscribers- The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent- Moon Knight- Roombas (not a movie, just roombas)
Somehow, the guys completely missed when The New York Times unveiled their list of the Top 25 Greatest Actors of the 21st Century in 2020. So what better way to dive into it for the first time then with 2 years worth of hindsight? This week, the guys go through their list celebrating actors and actresses from across the world, giving their thoughts on each entrant, and choosing who they felt was snubbed. Also, they give a brief Oscars recap (admittedly, with not much time dedicated to *that* incident however) and highlight The Tragedy of Macbeth, as Luke finally watched it for the first time. The article from the New York Times:https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/movies/greatest-actors-actresses.html
We're one Sunday away from the Oscars! The guys give their thoughts on the movies they drafted last week, while looking at who the favorites are going into the weekend. Plus, they take some time to talk about The Batman, the biggest movie release of the past month.
This week, the guys provide an update on the state of video game adaptions, both incoming and already released, since the hiatus. Plus, they touch on the release of The Batman and give a preview of what they expect (since nobody had seen it yet at the time of recording), and Nick takes a quick victory lap for predicting the latest news to come from Crunchyroll and Funimation.
What was supposed to be a brief hiatus and a November return turned into a longer than expected break into the new year, but the boys are back! Catch up with they guys as we Nick, Eric, and Luke catch up with what kept them so busy over the past few months! Plus, with the announcement of the Oscar nominations, the guys draft which movies they will Make the Case for!

Nick organized a tasteful coup to wrench control of the pod away from Luke and Eric for one episode. In their place, guests Officer Nasty and Mando Marx join Nick to talk all things Marvel, specifically they do a preview of What If...? as well as compiling a consensus top 5 MCU projects to date. No Lukes or Erics were harmed in the making of this episode.. . . Welcome to the 1st edition of the Before Cinema draft! The guys come together to draft the best version of whatever topic they may talk about that day. This week: their personal actor/actress "Mount Rushmore"; who they believe to be the 4 most important actors and actresses to them (translation: just their favorites). Just like any draft, there will be reaches and questionable decision making abound. 3 brothers. 3 Mount Rushmores. Let the games begin.. . . The guys warmed up after a bout of "inclement weather" in Texas and got sidetracked talking about movie scores, Mortal Kombat, and power outages.
The guys talk about WandaVision at the midseason point; reflect on Godzilla and how far he's come from his humble beginnings in the early 50's; and then cap it off playing a Valentine's themed game that featured more Crispin Glover discussion than is probably warranted in any form of recorded media. So, yeah enjoy.
The guys hang out and talk about some of the movies they're most excited to see in 2021. Highlights include:Willy's WonderlandSuicide SquadThe Unbearable Weight of Massive TalentRidley Scott - Gucci; The Last DuelA whole lot moreThere's also a Grace and Frankie intro that takes an oddly sexual turn if you're into that sort of thing. On December 10, 2020, Disney held a conference in the form of a call to their investors (namely, the consumers since they are publicly traded). The result: a MASSIVE news dump of content announcements coming from all of their respective branches to the theaters, television, and Disney+ . In this week's episode, the guys hold a segmented discussion moderated by Eric to talk about the projects they're most excited about, the ones that keep them the most curious, and what this might mean for Disney's long term future.Areas the guys cover in their 5 minute segments include:- Marvel- Star Wars- PixarJoin the guys as they get excited and nervous about the future of their favorite mouse!(Intro theme by Kevin MacLeod)
WarnerMedia and HBO Max struck a deal where they will be releasing their entire 2021 film slate simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max for the first 30 days. This was a bombshell agreement that has potential for far reaching implications for the movie industry, specifically if this model will gain traction and other studios will follow suit. The question, however, is what impact this will have on the movie theater industry. The guys spend today's episode talking about the deal, discussing where they think the impact of the deal will be felt, whether they are excited about the potential, and how does WarnerMedia benefit from the deal in general.
The 2019 calendar year proved to be a pretty incredible year for film. Of the movies the guys sat down to watch, the one that resonated the most with them, enough to dedicate an entire review to, was "The Irishman" (which would go on to become Luke's favorite film of the year). From the acting to the thematic elements that made the film unique among Scorsese's legendary backdrop, Before Cinema had a lot to say about the movie, so join in as they break Scorsese's latest film! This episode was recorded in 2019, closer to when the film was initially released on Netflix. It's being released from the vault now to fill in the Thanksgiving week episode. Some traits of the show will be slightly different compared to how things are now due to this fact. With that being said, enjoy! (SPOILER FILLED REVIEW AHEAD)
Taking inspiration from a television favorite among the guys, in this episode they dive in to varying topics surrounding the movie industry, including:- Which upcoming directors they believe in the most- Drive-in movie theater viability in a post-Covid world- If Covid has changed potential viewing habits- Who benefits the most in a "career swap"With moderation from Before Cinema's very own version of Kristen Welker (aka Luke), the guys take us through their thoughts on each topic in this new format!(Intro music by Kevin MacLeod)
Usually for the podcast, the guys come in with a prompt, a discussion topic, maybe a game they come up with for each other. It's fun. But this week, they decided to take it easy, and just wanted to have a chat together. In a new segment they're dubbing, "Group Chat", follow along with the guys as they get sidetracked by whatever and wherever the conversation twists and turned to. (Intro theme by Kevin MacLeod)
It's the season of the witch, All Hollow's Eve, and every other description of Halloween season! Enjoy!
Fall is here, and the guys wanted to have a little fun this week. Because school is back in session nationwide (kinda) and football season is upon us, they came up with an idea: draft "assets" from any teen film ever made to build the best "teen" film. The categories are: - Protagonist/best friend - 'Zany' adult character - Bully/antagonist - Obstacle/outcome/conflict - Wild card pick (any trope from any movie)Nick vs. Eric vs. Luke. Who made the best movie? Listen in as they stretch the definition of a "teen" film with their movies!
