Lost my motivation after all the discussion at NoCKRs. Plus I listened to the latest episode of Yarniacs where they discussed Sharlene's Weekender. Didn't inspire me. Socks: Wisdom Yarns Wacki Saki in the colorway Batty Berlin. Almost done with the leg of the second sock. Spinning: Into the Whirled roving in colorways Welcome to Litchfield and The Traveler. I've finished the two singles and have plied one bobbin. Have a little over 300 yards. Started plying second bobbin. Weaving Studio: It's a work in progress. I think I have finally fixed the problem with the brake band falling off. Kelly's Projects Two more hats (both using a turquoise DK) went to the free table at school. I haven't checked back to see if they are gone, but the day after I put them there it was in the high 70s. So I switched to Izzy doll bears for my next skein of retreat spirit yarn. It's a taupe brown color. Started another chenille rug warp for making the chenille “caterpillar strips.” As I was about half done I looked in the trunk and found some other spirit yarn I had intended to use for the strips. I used some, but I might have yet another warp of strips to make. I have a lot of weaving spirit yarn. Finished a third bobbin of spirit roving from Pat. Still need to ply it to get the wheels empty and ready for the spin in. Gray Corriedale x Merino fiber that is beautifully prepared (Morro Fleeceworks). Shari is still processing fleeces. She is selling the mill but it hasn't sold yet. Also there is a new fiber mill opening. News from Knitadmin Mary is that there is a new small-batch custom wool and fiber mill coming soon to Northern California, Siren Song Fleeceworks. Meredith will be accepting fleeces for custom processing at Fiber Frolic in Vacaville on June 7th. She will also be vending at Lambtown the first weekend in October. Winter Weave Along The WWAL has ended. In the thread we had 55 projects linked, 184 pictures, 881 posts, 37 voices, 152 readers. We announced prizes for six lucky weavers. Summer Spin In Now until September 1. All spinning and making with handspun yarn counts. Preparing fleeces also counts. Let's go!

A hop, skip and jump away from Sydney, the Hunter Valley is renowned as the birthplace of Australian wine. And yet this is far from ideal wine territory: hot, sticky, often stormy. So how did this tiny wine region come to play such an outsize role in Ozzie wine's history and evolution?Join us to find out why as we chew the cud with Hunter legend Bruce Tyrrell (sample quote: ‘I'm the luckiest man in the wine industry') and winemaker Xanthe Hatcher (‘The Hunter's a region of extremes…') We touch on everything from French pick-pockets to oysters and, 'oblivion for a dollar fifty'. We explore how Hunter Semillon became an idiosyncratic global classic whose naturally low alcohol, refreshing, distinctive and food-friendly style paradoxically mean it's well suited to the wine drinkers of today. (But it wasn't always going to be this way – at one stage the wines had enough acidity, ‘to take the enamel off your teeth!') And we also look beyond Semillon to other Hunter staples like Chardonnay and Shiraz as well as future bets like Fiano. Thanks to the Hunter Valley Wine and Tourism Association and Wine Australia for sponsoring this episode. I can't wait for you guys to meet today's guest, Ashley Walls. I heard Ashley share at a Twelve Step Meeting a few months ago and was absolutely blown away. At just 21 years old, her wisdom and self awareness are remarkable. Ashley's father was in prison when she was very young, then got out and was sober for many years. Ashley went with him to meetings and fell in love with the program from the sidelines. After nine years sober, her father's relapsed, sending Ashley spiraling. Consciously deciding to begin using substances, Ashley was strung out on benzos by the time she was 18. An early relationship tragedy led to suicidal ideation and and her first foray into substance abuse treatment. Ashley spent the next few years in and out of treatment and relapsing. Eventually landing at a women's facility in San Diego, there she met Polina White, a friend that would change her life. Through their friendship, Ashley and Polina were able to support each other in early sobriety and both began rebuilding their lives with their newfound friendship as the foundation. Tragically, in September 2021, Polina drowned while swimming at the Corona del Mar beach while Ashley was visiting family in LA. Though devastated, Ashley managed to stay sober through her grief and recently celebrated three years of sobriety. Ashley still credits her friendship with Poline as a cornerstone in her recovery and together with Polina's family, started a scholarship fund in Polina's name. The Polina Fund raises money to send women in need to substance abuse and mental health treatment. Ashley's grasp and insight into the steps, as well as her dedication to service work in recovery, have truly inspired me, and I think she will inspire you too. Giuseppe Castellano talks to Stephanie Alexander-Jinks, co-owner and agent at The Artworks Illustration Agency, about Stephanie's transition from illustrator to agent; what stands out to her—positively and negatively—in portfolios; what illustrators can do to increase their chances for success; and more.
We are pleased to offer this recent conversation with Jennifer "Jinks" Hoffmann, author of The Light of God's Shadow - Musings, Stories, and Poems on Waking Up, from SDI Press Books. We discuss poetry and creativity, death, finding God in all things - in other words, just an "ordinary" conversation from the Home of Spiritual Companionship :) --- In The Light of God's Shadow, Jinks reminds us through earthy, vulnerable and humorous musings, stories, and poetry that waking up is a lifetime endeavor. Psychotherapist and spiritual director Jinks Hoffmann encourages us to listen for the divine daily call to wholeness—in our relationships and work, our joys and dreams, our messes and triumphs, our losses and grief. We accompany Jinks on her journey through radiant and dark shadow, and we learn with her from the wisdom of her teachers. We grow in understanding— and in our bodies, hearts and souls—that when we welcome our vulnerability and strength, we heighten our humanity and heal our souls. By becoming kinder and more compassionate with ourselves and with one another we keep waking up and we bring healing to the world. Click here to order your copy today. Enjoy this lively discussion as Dana Scurlock, Director of Recruitment at Staffing Boutique, joins the hosts to explore creative ways to enhance employee retention and satisfaction at nonprofits during the holiday season. They discuss some low-cost holiday ideas that can bring joy and camaraderie to the workplace. The ultimate goal is to create a supportive and engaging work environment that encourages employees to stay committed to their organizations, particularly during the holiday season and beyond. Dana begins by emphasizing the significance of employee retention, considering the substantial costs and resource investments involved in hiring and training new staff. She suggests that organizations take steps to make their office environments more appealing, starting with some of these simple but effective ideas. One suggestion is to offer employees extra break time for shopping and holiday preparations. This not only eases their stress but also allows coworkers to bond while planning their holiday activities. Another idea is to introduce an internal lottery or game, where employees have the chance to win cash prizes during the holiday season. This adds an element of excitement and festivity to the workplace, boosting morale. Dana also encourages organizations to consider the power of live music during the holiday season. Whether it's hosting a choir or hiring musicians to perform festive tunes, live music can transform the atmosphere and create a joyful ambiance in the office. To foster teamwork and participation, Dana proposes organizing a fun cookie exchange and decorating party. Employees can come together to decorate cookies, fostering a sense of togetherness and adding a festive touch to the workplace. Recognizing and emphasizing the value of personal touch, Dana suggests personalized gift cards with heartfelt notes from board members. This practice helps bridge the gap between board members and staff, making employees feel valued and appreciated. Lastly, Dana advocates for volunteer activities at other nonprofits as a meaningful way for staff to give back to the community. Such activities not only benefit the community but also strengthen team bonds and provide a sense of purpose to employees. In a courtroom packed with victims and spectators, former South Carolina attorney Alex Murdaugh was sentenced to 27 years in prison for his egregious theft of approximately $12 million from clients who had placed their trust in him. The courtroom drama unfolded as victims shared their emotional testimonies, revealing the profound impact of Murdaugh's betrayal. Murdaugh, once a respected figure in the legal community and a prominent name in Hampton County for generations, faced sentencing for his extensive financial crimes. Over nearly a decade, he exploited the trust of his clients, promising assistance with medical bills and settlements, only to misappropriate the funds for his personal use. Jordan Jinks, a friend of Murdaugh's since childhood, expressed his anguish, saying, "I'm not crying for what he stole from me. I'm crying for what he did to everybody." Many victims, like Jinks, entrusted Murdaugh with their financial well-being, only to be left financially ruined and emotionally devastated. Prosecutor Creighton Waters provided a detailed account of Murdaugh's thefts, highlighting how he manipulated more than $12 million to evade detection over nearly a decade. Murdaugh used the trust of his family name and legal credentials to perpetuate his theft, accruing significant sums to pay off loans and credit card bills, which eventually spiraled out of control. Under the plea deal, Murdaugh faced 22 financial crimes related to his clients, including breach of trust, money laundering, and tax evasion. His victims included individuals like Gloria Satterfield, a longtime family maid who died in a fall at the Murdaugh home. Murdaugh promised to take care of her family but later admitted to stealing every penny of the insurance settlement he obtained on her behalf. Sandra Taylor, another victim, lost her life in a crash with a drunk driver, leaving behind three children. Murdaugh falsely claimed he could secure only a $30,000 settlement for her estate and secretly pocketed $150,000. Throughout the sentencing hearing, Murdaugh repeatedly apologized to his family, victims, and those he had wronged. He attributed his actions to a drug addiction to painkillers, expressing remorse for bringing shame and dishonor upon his loved ones. Judge Clifton Newman, who presided over the murder trial that resulted in Murdaugh's life sentence without parole for killing his wife, Maggie, and younger son, Paul, in June 2021, accepted the plea deal for the financial crimes. Newman described Murdaugh as having "the emptiest soul" he had encountered in his 23 years on the bench. Despite Murdaugh's persistent claims of innocence in the murder case, his lawyers are seeking a new trial, alleging jury tampering by the court clerk. A different judge will decide whether to grant a hearing to question jurors, the clerk, and potentially Judge Newman under oath. The sentencing for Murdaugh's financial crimes serves as a precautionary measure to prevent his release if his murder conviction is ever overturned. Under South Carolina law, he will have to serve nearly 23 years of the sentence, even with good behavior, before becoming eligible for release, making him 76 years old upon potential release. As part of the deal, Murdaugh relinquished his rights to appeal. The courtroom proceedings mark another chapter in the stunning fall from grace of Alex Murdaugh, once a legal luminary, whose alleged crimes have garnered attention in true crime podcasts and online discussions. His case continues as he awaits sentencing on federal financial crime charges and faces additional local charges related to insurance fraud. While Murdaugh expressed remorse during the hearing and offered apologies to his victims, the enduring impact of his actions on the lives of those he defrauded remains a poignant reminder of the devastating consequences of betrayal and deceit within the legal profession. Hidden Killers With Tony Brueski | True Crime News & Commentary
SynopsisOn today's date in 1975, the Kansas City Lyric Theater opened its 18th season with the world premiere of a new opera by Jack Beeson, Captain Jinks of the Horse Marines. As if to prove that everything is “up-to-date” in Kansas City, even before this world premiere, this Missouri company could boast a long tradition of staging contemporary operas by American composers. Captain Jinks was the sixth of some 10 operas composed by Jack Beeson, who was born in Muncie, Indiana, in 1921. Beeson blames the radio broadcasts of the Metropolitan Opera for his catching the opera bug. “When I was about 12,” Beeson says, “the Met started regularly broadcasting on Saturday afternoons, and I was seduced. With what spending money I had, I bought scores, and I would place the score up on the piano, and with a little radio on the piano and a big radio across the room, I would accompany the Met.”Some of Beeson's other operas include The Sweet Bye and Bye from 1957, Lizzie Borden from 1965 and Sorry, Wrong Number from 1999. He also taught for many years at Columbia University in New York City, mentoring hundreds of his composition students.Music Played in Today's ProgramJack Beeson (1921 – 2010) — Captain Jinks of the Horse Marines (Kansas City Lyric Theatre; Russell Patterson, cond.) In this episode, I had the pleasure of interviewing an Academy of Choice graduate, Patrick Jinks, about his brand of leadership coaching. Patrick worked in the non-profit world for over two decades before parlaying his success into coaching other not-for-profits leaders. He has an impressive resumé, including a Ph.D. in Organizational Leadership, board-certification as an executive leadership coach, being recently recognized globally as one of the 10 Most Influential People in Leadership Coaching for 2022 by CIO Views Magazine, serving as a guest writer for Forbes.com, a multi-best-selling author and recognition as a two-time award winner through the Association for Talent Development. We talked about the process of coaching with a non-profit and leadership frame, rather than a corporate and business frame. Patrick says, "Coaching is coaching." The process doesn't really change, even though the environment may be different. Patrick shared his company's definition of leadership and his fidelity to the coaching process, rather than crossing over into the consulting arena. He dropped many pearls of wisdom, and this topped the list for me: "Every aspect of leadership, if it's done effectively, is through the lens of relationship." Finally, Patrick talks about the importance of coaches having a coach themselves. Check out this interview with an impressive leadership coach.

A Way with Words — language, linguistics, and callers from all over
For many people, religion provides language and rituals for key milestones in life, from births to weddings to funerals. But what if you don't ascribe to any particular religion? What words do you use to mark those moments? An uplifting new book suggests turning to the language of poetry to honor lifecycle events. And speaking of rituals, if you say Rabbit Rabbit before you say anything else on the first day of every month, supposedly you'll have good luck. But if you forget, don't worry-- there's a remedy for that! Plus, kitbag question, petrichor, a puzzle about funny synonyms, waltzing Matilda, tut and tsk, gee whittaker, be-bopping, and If you don't chance your arm, you won't break your neck. Guest Hosts: Austin Kelly & Bucket Think Tank | Listeners, this is a pretty unusual episode. First, we're covering a story that I consider to be Barks' absolute weakest adventure-length story, Jungle Hi-Jinks. However, Barks himself didn't do the writing: officially the writer is unknown, but my suspicion is that Western Publishing regular Vic Lockman is responsible (at fault?) for the story. Listen to learn more than ever thought you would about this...prolific writer, and decide for yourself if you think he is to blame!

Violence in schools is sadly something we see all too often - perhaps more so in other countries, but it is a very real problem here in the UK. Today, Middlesborough girl Nikki Conroy would have been 41 years old - perhaps married, perhaps with a family of her own. Sadly. she never got that chance to do any of that, due to 9 minutes of mayhem, carnage, pure horror, back on a Monday morning in March 1994. I bring you Nikki's story here. The episode contains details and descriptions of events, involving children and injury detail, that some listeners may find offensive, disturbing, and or distressing, so discretion is advised whilst listening.
