My name is Anita Powell. I'm a 50-year-old black female born in the UK I am suffering from the symptoms of perimenopause. A few years ago, I noticed that my body was responding different to how it used to be. Conversations with my peers and they too were noticing changes. I felt my overall health was deteriorating. As a 40 something year old woman I never really explored the topic of my health; I just lived it but not optimised on my health. After research I realised that I need to rethink my behaviour and take care of me.      Within the podcast I will be discussing the Menopause, Midlife, and Beyond, looking at life from my perceptive, a black female, exploring health and lives of women.  Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/black-menopause-and-beyond. Leesh presumed that one day she would have a child. At 18, she fell pregnant, but unfortunately, a stressful incident resulted in a miscarriage. Decades later, after years of wanting a child, she was diagnosed with a non-cancerous tumour and told that her pregnancy that ended in a miscarriage in 1998 had triggered her brain into a phantom pregnancy. Leesh unknowingly could not fall pregnant, as her brain thought she was already pregnant, and the body does not allow a woman to fall pregnant again. She tried to conceive with different partners and had numerous tests and doctors visits, but sadly no explanation could be found for her childlessness. In 2011 after being in a state of Phantom Pregnancy for 11 years, it was diagnosed, and Leesh was put on treatment to correct the issue. Eventually, her health issue was resolved. However, she had now entered into perimenopause; now, she is childless and postmenopause. Leesh has had emotional decades dealing with her childlessness, plus society and its devaluing of childless women, and now dealing with her menopause. This podcast is a get to know Anita podcast; I am the presenter of Black Menopause and Beyond Podcast; I talk about my Health (including how covid impacted) Menopause and Menopause conversation journey and how I got here. In 2018 I realised the Menopause lasted for years; I was shocked and horrified that it was not just a quick switching off a bodily activity. I was horrified to find out that Menopause was a transition, and for some women, the change was quite dramatic and could last for years. Plus, I wondered why Menopause was a secret. In 2019 I started an online peer menopause group (that I still run), then on to a face to face group sessions (this has stopped since covid). This group work with local women within my town. I organised my first menopause conference in 2019 and my second in February 2020. My Borough Council supported the group, and the events had NHS professionals such as Gynaecologist, Women Health Providers, BBC Presenter Nana Akua, TUC talking about work rights, plus everyday women speaking about their personal experiences. The group was interviewed by ITV News and BBC radio in 2019. I was nominated for an 'Everyday Hero' award by my local Newspaper, Bedford Independent, for the menopause group. I am currently planning a regular walking group for the women, arranging regular online talks and face-to-face sessions, and working with the Borough Council and borough councillors to engage the local women to discuss what they need from the council their experiences with the NHS. In 2020 I met Nina, the founder of Black women in Menopause; I became a co-founder with Nina and her online black women in menopause group. I loved my first menopause group, but I quickly noticed an absence of women of colour and other groups within my sessions. I realised that menopause taboos and the menopause conversation were more challenging for some groups than others. Also, the discussions did not include conversations around cultural foods, differing cultural taboos, different hair types etc. I joined Nina, and with black women Menopause, the aim was not to exclude other women but to add black Menopause to the menopause conversation. So that black woman would feel that they too can talk about Menopause. The Black menopause group are currently organising loads of activities and talks for the future. So, I currently work on two peer menopause groups, and now I have started this podcast. Hi, this is Anita, and this is the trailer for my new podcast, 'Black Menopause and Beyond'. Within the podcast, I aimed to look at menopause from my perspective as a woman of colour, working-class with a fuller figure. I've noticed that not only is menopause a taboo topic, but specific communities are not part of the conversation. I aim to discuss this taboo topic, including health interviews, talk to women about their experiences, explore why the menopause dialogue does not have all women as part of the discussion, and talk to other groups absent from the conversation.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/black-menopause-and-beyond.
