Join Zak and I as we discuss his new track 'Less of a Man', which explores our relationship with masculinity and what it means to be a man in today's society. We also chat about Zak's experiences of mental health, his exceptional table tennis talent, mental health within the music industry and the impact of our mums in our lives. To me, Zak is a true example of authenticity and vulnerability, in his ability to share this truth openly and from a place of curiosity. About Zak: Zak Abel is a British singer / songwriter, who first rose to fame after supplying guest vocals on Gorgon City's UK Top 20 hit single ‘Unmissable'. Born in London, Zak's journey into music was not predetermined, as despite this always being where his true passions lay, he once ranked Number 1 in England and had a position on the Olympic Squad for Table Tennis. Travelling around the world to train and play games, Zak's earliest musical memory is listening to Magic FM in the car and being brought up on a diet of Ray Charles, Amy Winehouse and James Brown – soul music in the most classical sense. The depth and feeling that those artists packed into their lyrics were never lost on Zak, who started penning his own songs as a 14-year-old and uploading videos of his work to YouTube, which eventually led to him signing a record deal in 2014 and meeting influential electronic music producer, Joker. Zak and Joker released the four-track EP, ‘Joker Presents: Zak Abel', in 2015 – a record Zak credits with opening his mind to new ways of thinking about music and a gateway for meeting other creative minds to collaborate with like in the career-defining tracks ‘Beautiful Escape' with Tom Misch and Kaytranada on 'Say Sumthin'. Through these early collaborations, Zak felt both emboldened as a writer and confident as a performer, setting him up perfectly for the release of his 2017 debut album, ‘Only When We're Naked'. This body of work saw him channel his creativity into pop spheres for the first time and it was a record that significantly increased his stock as a writer too – being asked to pen hit records for the likes of Kygo (‘Freedom') Avicii (‘Ten More Days'), ZAYN (Flames), Paloma Faith and John Legend (I'll Be Gentle) and Don Diablo (Bad). Now signed to Vertigo Berlin (Universal Music Germany) and Island Records in the US, his own music never fails to disappoint, too: blending soulful vocals with R&B and pop, the smokey 2021 release “Be Kind”, which made it into AirPlay Charts in various European countries and Top 40 HOT AC in the USA has been the defining direction for his upcoming second album. Alongside music, Zak is an Ambassador for mental health charity CALM and speaks openly about issues surrounding this topic as well as channeling themes of identity and mental struggle into his lyrics.

Anita sits with her teenage daughter for the first time to talk about menopause. Anita is very comfortable talking to adults about menopause but has never sat down with her children to have this discussion. So today, in this podcast, she talks about menopause with her teenage daughter. Anita has never had a sit-down conversation with her mother and both Anita and her daughter feels slightly uncomfortable. However, the fear of starting the conversation is the biggest obstacle - in reality, it's good to talk. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________Black Menopause and Beyond works with the Peer Group Black Women in Menopause Insta/Twitter/Facebook BlackwomeninMenopause. https://www.instagram.com/blackwomeninmenopause/Black Menopause and Beyond podcast look at Menopause from the eyes of a Black woman.

Throughout my twenties I wasn't interested in going to festivals. I rarely listened to new music, my morning alarm would be joined by Magic FM playing the same songs on repeat that I'd known all my life. I also didn't like the thought of camping, the dirt, the portaloo's, the greasy hair. I just didn't think I'd enjoy it. And then as part of my transition into single life I dipped my toe into Field Day in London - a one day festival within walking distance of my flat which I obviously loved, from here I moved on to Glastonbury and others followed. Due to CoronaVirus all our festivals have been cancelled for 2020, so for a bit of nostalgia, I thought it would be nice to share some festival experiences and dedicate an episode to our absent festivals. This episode takes a slightly different approach to others because it features 6 individual events rather than one overarching story over time. In this interview he talks about his show on Magic FM, Boyzone getting cigarette butts thrown at them and bottles of beer bounced off their heads, why they were never going to the get respect they deserved from NME, and why Barry Gibb is the greatest songwriter of all time.

Comics? Do they still make those? Why?! Can a comic get you from A to B without having to rub up against the scum on public transport? Can a comic beep increasingly faster as you reverse towards a stationary object? Can a comic cruise down the open road as you listen to some quality tunes (or Magic FM, what’s the difference?)? Can you make love to a beautiful/willing woman in the backseat of a comic? Tell you what, if you can convince me that a comic will somehow get all the bloody cyclists off my roads then I might be interested! Until then the only way I’d ever possibly be interested in a comic is if it was filling some of the pot holes on our roads these days what on earth do I pay my road tax for you could’t make it up! Let’s drive! Here’s SILENCE! #459. I, Gary Lactus have passed my driving test and spend much of this episode burning rubber in The Beast Must Die’s stupid, carless face! Once the dust settles there’s some prolonged pre-comics chat about Mandy, Deconstructed with Mehdi Hassan and some other stuff I can’t remember because I wasn’t listening, I was too busy browsing driving gloves online. Then there’s the Reviewniverse in which there are reviews, passing mentions or something inbetweens of The Green Lantern, Shuri, Fantastic Four, Jeff Hawke, Go-Bots, Titan Editions in general including James Bond and a very special review of Darren Cullen’s Mini Daily Mail (find out more HERE) @silencepod @bobsymindless @frasergeesin @thebeastmustdie silencepodcast@gmail.com You can support us using Patreon if you like.
