Send us a textAre psychedelics a missing key to personal transformation in midlife? This week, I speak with Rob Grover and Gary Logan, the founders of The Journeymen Collective, a luxury guided psilocybin retreat company based in the mountains outside Vancouver, BC. These two have helped entrepreneurs, performers, couples—and yes, many women navigating perimenopause, menopause, and midlife transitions—use guided mushroom journeys to reconnect to themselves and release emotional burdens that therapy, medication, or self-help books haven't resolved. We talk grief, depression, anxiety, the inner critic, and how to tap into the body's sacred intelligence when everything feels disconnected. Rob and Gary explain the difference between “tripping” and undergoing a true guided journey, and why that distinction matters so deeply for healing and growth.Highlights: “Most people who find us have done the therapy, read the books, tried the biohacking—and still feel stuck.”– Rob Grover“This isn't about escaping—it's about meeting yourself more deeply than ever before.” – Gary LoganHow grief led both Rob and Gary to their first journeys with magic mushrooms—and why it changed everything. Why psilocybin is not a shortcut or magic bullet, but a profound reset for the nervous system. The science, spirituality, and deep preparation that goes into their luxury retreats. Why talk therapy for 10 years often gets outpaced by 4 days of immersive guided work.A frank and beautiful discussion about anger, sadness, menopause symptoms—and how they're often calls to listen to the body, not suppress it.Links + resources:Learn more: The Journeymen CollectiveFollow Rob and Gary on Instagram and LinkedInMentioned: Red School: Menstruality EducationResearch: MAPS – Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic StudiesUse code HOTFLASH20 for 20% off at MenoLabs.comEpisode sponsor: Thanks to Menolabs for sponsoring this episode. Susie Bale joins Mary Greensmith to explore the vast and often overlooked topic of perimenopause. With so little conversation and information passed down, many women find themselves confused and unprepared for this phase of life. From irregular bleeding and brain fog to mood swings, low libido, and vaginal dryness, the symptoms can be intense—but they don't have to be suffered in silence. Susie explains how homeopathy can support the whole system, offering gentle, natural help through hormonal shifts, adrenal fatigue, thyroid imbalances, and emotional stress. What remedies can make perimenopause easier? How do you know which ones are right for you? And how can you get support when you need it most? All of this and more is covered in this thoughtful, empowering conversation—so you can feel more prepared and supported as you move into the next stage of your life. Do I want to be a victim to going through this?Or do I want to be that victor? I went through perimenopause, and I was able to do this, and I was able to find solutions for my own health. And I think the kicker for me at that point in my perimenopausal journey was, I want this to be that when I'm 85 years old, and I look back on my life, this is the point that I chose for longevity of my life, versus a quick fix.So, every decision past, that point in time was, is this going to be helping my 85-year-old body to hike a mountain, or is it going to set me back? So those are the kinds of decisions of working with my future self. I am delighted to have Dr. Claudia Welch joining me as my guest on the podcast today.Shifting Focus on Women's HealthThe conversation on women's health initially focused on external factors. However, there is currently more awareness of the importance of internal nourishment and rest. Rest and nourishment are crucial for maintaining balance with all the external distractions that draw our attention outward. Nurturing inner stability creates ripples of positivity, much like the various cycles of nature. Inner Attention Versus External FocusWe need to focus on our internal motivations rather than our external actions. While actions like cooking or caregiving may seem nourishing, the internal mindset driving those actions is what truly matters. In Ayurveda, nurturing our inner world is essential as it helps reduce the impact of fears and external seductions, allowing for more balanced and grounded lives.Shifting Interests in HealthOver time, there has been a shift from focusing on the biological details of health, like hormones, to a broader view of how people live their lives. According to Eastern philosophy, health imbalances stem from internal belief systems, fears, and seductions. That is why we need to address the root causes of those imbalances rather than focusing on biological symptoms for lasting health.Hormone Management: HRT vs. Bioidentical HormonesClaudia emphasizes the benefits of bioidentical hormones over traditional hormone replacement therapy (HRT), explaining that while lifestyle, diet, and herbal remedies can help with menopausal symptoms like hot flashes and insomnia, they may not offer immediate relief for those with a history of poor health habits. Even though those symptoms are not life-threatening, the stress they cause can have long-term health impacts. If bioidentical hormones are inaccessible, HRT might be an acceptable alternative despite the associated risks. The Uncertainty of Medical ScienceClaudia is skeptical about overly confident medical opinions and encourages everyone to be cautious and self-aware when using hormone therapy. In the decades she spent studying hormones, she learned that there is no one-size-fits-all solution. Stress and Hormonal Imbalance in MidlifeStress, especially during midlife, significantly impacts our hormonal balance. The emotional challenges many women face in their late 40s and 50s, like the fear of aging and death, can amplify stress. The demands of caring for children and aging parents often worsen these hormonal imbalances.Confronting the Fear of DeathReflecting on a personal experience in India, Claudia once believed she did not fear death. However, she felt afraid when she faced the possibility of dying from hepatitis. She feels it is essential for us to intentionally engage with the concept of death as a natural part of life. The Practice of Dying DailyClaudia has come to embrace the idea of dying daily, a practice from various spiritual traditions. That means we need to let go of our professional, personal, or emotional attachments if we want to learn about the impermanence of life. By surrendering to that process, we can reduce our fear of death while supporting our hormonal health.Embracing Loss and Personal TransformationLetting go means accepting that we cannot control everything. As we age, we must make peace with the inevitable losses we will face. Even though the void our losses leave can feel overwhelming, it ultimately leads to transformation and growth.Menopause Support and Facing MortalityClaudia created the Menopause Chronicles, a community to support one another and share experiences for women navigating menopause. This time on the podcast my guest is Tina Backhouse, General Manager at Theramex. Tina joined Theramex in 2020 to lead the UK Women's Health business, helping to establish them as the largest supplier of HRT & Menopause Products in the UK. She is passionate about ensuring equality of care for all women regarding their health in the UK, and that women have choice in their healthcare options.   She joins us to discuss the recent research the company funded to investigate disparities in access to menopause support: for example, just 5% of black women are on HRT vs 20% of white women, and individuals in areas of social deprivation are significantly less likely to be prescribed the newer, safer forms of HRT.    We also cover some of Tina's ongoing frustrations at the lack of prioritization and funding available for women's healthcare - such as the fact that NHS England developed a public health campaign for menopause that was never launched due to lack of funding.   Would it surprise you to know that the UK currently has the largest gender health gap in the G20? We also have a staggering 35% gender pension gap. The report, published in April 202 interviewed a range of clinicians and allied healthcare professionals, and is available to download at:  https://www.theramex.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/Theramex_Tackling-Unequal-Access-to-Menopause-Care.pdf - we discuss the five recommendations that the report concludes with, including better training for GPs and other allied healthcare professionals, and the creation of a national formulary to end the current postcode lottery whereby some newer HRT is available in some areas but not others.   If you enjoy the podcast and would like to help me keep it running (on a shoestring!) please consider buying me a ‘virtual coffee' at Ko-fi.com/middlingalong - or you can support me in a non-monetary way by sharing this episode, or writing a short review online!  If your workplace wants to become more ‘menopause friendly' then please let them know about the work I do at http://www.managingthemenopause.com  You can also find me over on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/middlingalong_podcast/ and https://www.instagram.com/managingthemenopause   Join our newsletter, The Messy Middle, for fortnightly(ish) goodness into your Inbox: https://dashboard.mailerlite.com/forms/323784/90772270045202190/share  We're delighted to be listed as one of the Top 25 podcasts for midlife and menopause here: https://www.lattelounge.co.uk/podcasts-about-the-menopause/

How are we at a point where women are terrified of a hormone they've had in their bodies most of their lives? Many of us have heard horrible things about estrogen and its connection to breast cancer. A lot of this public aversion stems from a study that came out in the early 2000s called the Women's Health Initiative (WHI). The WHI was a landmark study designed to define the risks and benefits of interventions, notably hormonal therapy. Unfortunately, when journals and the media reported on the findings, they didn't put them into the appropriate clinical context and did not mention the study's limitations. Ultimately, this led to women ditching their hormones en masse, suffering in silence without an alternative. Today I'm sharing what you need to know about the WHI, what the data shows about the connection between hormone therapy and the risk of disease, why we need to shift our perspective on hormone therapy, and alternatives for women who can't benefit from estrogen therapy. Let's try not to be afraid of estrogen - it's not a bad thing. Episode Highlights Telling women across the board not to go on hormones is a misogynistic statement What you need to know about the Women's Health Initiative study The problem with how the media reported the results of the WHI study Positive outcomes of hormone therapy identified in the study Limitations of the WHI Considerations for women with a history of breast cancer What the studies showed about the benefits for osteoporosis prevention The relationship between estrogen therapy and increased risk of dementia and stroke Detoxifying estrogen in your body My confession for estrogen replacement Alternatives to estradiol for menopause symptoms Resources Dr. Tassone's Practice | Tassone Advanced Gynecology Dr. Tassone's Book | The Hormone Balance Bible Hormone Archetype Quiz | Hormonal Mapping System   Medical Disclaimer This podcast and website represent the opinions of Dr. Shawn Tassone and his guests. If you think back, even two years ago, the menopause conversation was still really stifled, and worse yet, resources and information were minimal. Enter our next guests to the podcast. Menopause pioneer, Gwen Harris, saw the need as far back as 2013 with the start of the Menopause Support Group. The organization grew organically to 11,000 members by 2018, and then Tina McDermott, a wellness coach, joined forces with Gwen. The Menopause Support Group now spans the globe with well over 140,000 members in 120 countries, and out of this Menowave was born, an online, integrated care model for women in menopause.Early menopause and perimenopause can ambush the unexpecting, leading to a storm of questions and concerns. Gwen and Tina join me in shining a beacon of hope for those navigating these tumultuous waters, detailing how their comprehensive health assessment bridges the gap between confusion and taking action. Pack your bags for a journey to Sedona, where 'Menopalooza' promises an oasis of self-discovery and sisterhood. These retreats offer members and care providers an opportunity to connect in a more intimate setting. Life-long bonds are made between the attendees through the profound impact of community and support, rewriting the narrative of menopause, one story at a time. Menopause Support Group Facebook https://www.facebook.com/groups/439232282854798Menowave integrated care modelhttps://www.menowave.org/I'd love to work with you!
