In this episode of Unapologetically Me, Heather Blankenship sits down with Reauna Lopez - entrepreneur, real estate investor, and co-owner of Five Walnut Construction - to talk about identity, ambition, marriage, and the messy but meaningful path to building a life you love. This podcast is a deeply personal one for me. Not just because I resonate so much with Jassa and his experience of not having a true sense of identity, but because I'm expecting a child with my wife late this year who will be of mixed heritage. My wife is Italian and I'm Indian so our child will be both Indian and Italian, rather than half Indian and half Italian. I never really thought of being half something and half something else as ever really something to pay attention to, but recording this podcast with Jassa and reading his story has made a real impact on me.In the same way John Agard educated us all with his wildly popular poem “half caste”, about the impact of words on people's sense of worth, I feel Jassa has educated me on the use of my words and thoughts, regardless of whether there is ill intent or malice behind them. Words mean so much and I'd never want anyone, let alone my unborn child, to feel anything other than a whole person.Jassa Ahluwalia is a British actor, writer, filmmaker and trade unionist. Born in Coventry to a white English mum and a brown Punjabi dad in 1990, he attended school in Leicester and was raised in an extended family environment. He spoke English in the playground, Punjabi with his grandparents, and spent various summer holidays in India. He came to prominence as Rocky in the hit BBC Three series Some Girls, followed by starring roles in Unforgotten, Ripper Street, and Peaky Blinders. He's also one of the funniest comedians I've ever come across on social media. Please watch some of his sketches online!Jassa created the hashtag #BothNotHalf to explore mixed identity in light of his own British-Indian heritage. His TEDx talk on 'How Language Shapes Identity' has clocked up over 170k views and his BBC One documentary Am I English? won an Asian Media Award in 2022.
Paul is delighted to welcome actor, writer, and TED Talk speaker Jassa Ahluwalia to the PUDCAST.As someone who is both British and Punjabi, Jassa brings a unique perspective that many guests don't – he knows that this podcast isn't about puddings.Tune in to hear Jassa share his experiences growing up as a “white person” fluent in Punjabi, his philosophy of being BOTH NOT HALF, and his mission to transform the world's understanding of mixed heritage. What a guy.Don't miss out on Jassa's inspiring insights and stories - check out his book, "BOTH NOT HALF: A Radical New Approach to Mixed Heritage," available now.
This week on the show, I'm talking to Jassa Ahluwalia about his book and memoir, Both Not Half. Both Not Half is a poignant exploration of Jassa's own heritage – Punjabi and English – and other forms of identity including faith, class, gender and sexuality. Jassa reminds us that we are never fractions of an identity, but always whole, in a myriad of beautiful, overlapping, confusing but empowering ways. This week we're shifting our attention to Portchester Castle in Hampshire on England's south coast. Situated at the northern end of Portsmouth Harbour, this site has a history stretching back as far as the Romans. The later castle was also a place for thousands of international prisoners during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic wars, including 2,000 black soldiers. Joining us to talk about how the prisoners came to be here, what prison life was like for them and how their stories are being brought to life today are English Heritage's head of learning and interpretation, Dr Dominique Bouchard, education visits officer, Laura Bosworth, and associate director at Soho Theatre, Lakesha Arie-Angelo. To learn more about Portchester Castle or plan a visit, go to www.english-heritage.org.uk/portchestercastle.

In this episode snippet, Adrian and Michael discuss the importance of passing on your culture, heritage and the language of your parents to your children. In this instance, passing on Twi to their kids. We also explore the dangers of not teaching kids your foreign language and the benefits and advantages for them when they grow up or want to invest and relocate in Ghana or the African Continent. I am delighted to have the opportunity to talk with Raina Lagrand for this episode. Raina LaGrand (she/her) is a somatic therapist, yoga teacher, speaker and facilitator specializing in racial identity, trauma, relationships and embodiment. In her practice, Root to Rise Somatics, she primarily helps mixed race adults and interracial couples build relationships where they feel emotionally connected, and she also works with people of all identities when her schedule allows. Outside of clinical work, Raina provides embodiment-based workshops and trainings for companies invested in anti-racism and social justice. Raina lives with her dog on occupied Anishinaabe land (Ypsilanti, Michigan, USA). I hope you will enjoy our coverage of sensorimotor psychotherapy and how it helps us become more aware of our experience, following activation in the body, and becoming more embodied even if we have been through trauma. We talk through how it feels to navigate spaces when we are "outsiders" in a group, not belonging necessarily to a particular group in a way. We need to understand broader context, and how some of our trauma is actually subconsious and and preverbal. Healing these identities and having connections through family or learning aspects of our identity, beyond racial and cultural aspects. What do we value? How do we spend our time? What do we like to do? These all make up aspects of our value. Sometimes we need to understand how our origin stories play into the become we have become. We also make choices about how we situate ourselves. We speak about rejection sensitivity and how this plays a part not just in conditions like ADHD. Our mixed identities can sometimes lead to certain types of unknown rejection, and this can make us more sensitive to this process. We explore the notion of being part of a "mixed" identity and how we need to serve as elders in a way, that this will be something we can created that we didn't have. Raina explores her "Somatic Skills for Anxiety" class which available for purchase on her website. To some extent, all of us struggle with interacting in groups. Loneliness is a big part of major health risk, and is at epidemic proportions according the Surgeon General. Raina shares a practice called "the U turn" when she is working with couples, and things we can implement when we are working in relationship. She offers a practice toward the end of our conversation to help ground ourselves. *** Check out Raina's offerings at Root to Rise Somatics. This poem starts off by describing how split the poet — Jónína Kirton — feels between two identities: having both Métis and Icelandic heritage. The poem imagines a bridge between these two places and cultures, and arrives, in the second stanza, at the image of a “living root bridge.”It is in this image that the poem anchors itself: a bridge that is part of the earth, a bridge that lives, that is not torn, but alive and growing. This metaphor speaks to what is possible in a life, and helps Jónína Kirton thrive in the tension she thought would tear her.Jónína Kirton is a Red River Métis/Icelandic poet and a graduate of the Simon Fraser University’s Writer’s Studio where she is currently their BIPOC Auntie supporting and mentoring BIPOC students. In 2016, she received the City of Vancouver’s Mayor’s Arts Award for an Emerging Artist in the Literary Arts category. Her books of poetry include page as bone ~ ink as blood and An Honest Woman, which was a finalist for the Dorothy Livesay Poetry Prize.Find the transcript for this show at onbeing.org.

Hello and welcome back to Non/Native, the podcast that shares conversations between female immigrants, expats and interlopers. For this episode, I was joined by Maria, a parenting blogger from Trinidad who now lives in Surry, England. It was during her first year in the UK that Maria met her now-husband, and what was a temporary stay has turned into almost two decades, and bringing up a mixed-heritage family. In this episode Maria and I chat about the transition of becoming a mother while living abroad, raising multicultural children, and how years of Skyping friends and family back home has helped prepare us, in one sense, for the pandemic. Maria also shares her advice for anyone thinking of taking the leap and moving abroad. This interview was recorded in May 2020. I Am Multicultural | Interracial, Biracial, Blended Love Stories
In Episode 18, I had a fascinating conversation with multicultural married couple Ilene & Jorge about cultural identity & how it significantly shapes everything from personality, to relationships, to communication styles, traditions to raising kids. Ilene's father is a 2nd generation Russian and Jewish and her mother is Filipino & Catholic. Jorge grew up in New York with parents who were Puerto Rican + African American, Colombian, Mexican and self-identifies as Afro-Latina. We discuss: not looking Filipino or white enough How having parents who were unapologetically proud of their heritage impacted who she is Why she naturally gravitates to people who are different What it means to be Afro-Latina How understanding their love languages and families allowed them to better understand each other & their cultural upbringing What they want their little girl to know about embracing her mixed “Other” multicultural heritage See photos of Ilene + Jorge HERE

It's not alien, it's utopian! In this episode, Raymond and Carolyn discuss the history, the social politics, and the experience of having mixed heritage. From the reasons for so many Japanese Canadians being of mixed heritage, to describing yourself as "half", "mixed", or of course "hapa", even to the level of your own name, having mixed heritage is a complicated experience. This double-sized episode of Sounds Japanese Canadian to Me is just one part of a huge and continuously evolving conversation. Guest: Jeff Chiba StearnsFilmmaker, "Mixed Match" This is a film that could save lives, in our audience and beyond. Director Jeff Chiba Stearns (One Big Hapa Family, Yellow Sticky Notes) unveils the frustration and desperation of people who are waiting for a suitable match for a bone marrow donor. Multiracial blood cancer patients with complex genetics must draw from an extremely small pool of suitable donors.
