Episode 196 - I want doesn't get, but do you know why?

Play Episode Listen Later May 14, 2025 24:18

As a child, you probably heard a few times: ‘I want doesn't get' or ‘I want never gets', especially if you were raised in Great Britain. You were probably also explained that the reason for this was that ‘you have to ask for things in a more polite way and say I would like, may I please have etc. It's often used with children when they ask for things in, what is interpreted as, a rude way. And the chances are your 5-year-old self took this as ‘I mustn't ask for what I want'. Unfortunately, as you grow older this deep-seated belief shows up in many aspects of your life without you even realising it. I want this, but I can't ask for it. This little phrase ‘I want never gets' used to really trigger me and I used to tell people ‘If you don't ask you don't get'! But most recently I had a whole new perspective on this. As I understand more and more about our brain, our thoughts and how they create our reality I realised something really ground-breaking! The truth is ‘I want' does NOT get you what you want, because you don't believe in it. You don't believe you deserve the thing you want. This is one of the main reasons you hide behind ‘I don't know what I want'. What you are really saying is that ‘I don't believe I deserve it, what I want is impossible, I am afraid I won't get it, I am afraid I might lose it!' And here is the bombshell: I want doesn't get you want, because in your mind I want = I don't have it. Which means you are still focused on NOT HAVING it! As you already know, what you focus on, grows within you. So how do you get what you want in life? The simple answer is: Focus on ‘already having it'. You might be thinking: ‘How can I focus on something I don't have? How can I pretend I have it?'… Well, you do this all day long, without even realising. Think about all the ‘unwanted' scenarios that you create in your mind when you fear something or when you are uncertain about the outcome. They are not true, have not yet happened, but you create/go through every detail in your mind as if it were true. If you can do that about something negative/unwanted, you sure can do that about something you want. It is like daydreaming, something you have the innate ability to do so and, yes something you believe you must stop doing because it is not good for you (told the teachers when you were 5, 6, 7, etc.) How do you get what you want in life? Knowing what you want and being who/what you want before you even have it. How many times have you found yourself saying: I will do it WHEN... Kept procrastinating, then getting frustrated. Knew something had to change but kept ignoring it. Sounds like you? You are not alone. The thing is, it is not you who is causing this, it is your brain! If you are like most people I work with the chances are you too might be afraid of facing a certain challenge mostly due to not knowing what is on the other side (uncertainty) or because you are afraid of what other people will say/think about you Procrastination is a way of your brain trying to keep you safe from what it perceives as 'danger' and as you already know it also cannot tell the difference between what is real and what is imagined! So, instead of focusing on what you are afraid of; perhaps focus on the excitement you will have when you reach the goal or complete this task. It might also help to break it down into smaller tasks to take the overwhelm about the task or even define what the end result looks like so you take the 'uncertainty' element out completely. ..... This was a 10-year process and today's conversation has so many nuggets you can tap into and apply to your own life. Patience is often considered a virtue because it involves the ability to wait calmly and persistently in the face of challenges, delays, or obstacles. It allows for thoughtful decision-making and the ability to tolerate discomfort or uncertainty. Impatience, on the other hand, is a state of restlessness or frustration that arises from wanting immediate results or outcomes. and the latter seems to be the case in today's society where you want the results, and you want them now. Impatience can be problematic when it leads to impulsive actions, hasty decision-making, or a lack of consideration for others. It can hinder your ability to think rationally, plan effectively, and adapt to changing circumstances. In today's episode, we talked deeply about how both play out in your life and why impatience steal your peace and slow down your journey to the outcome you want. Impatience can indeed slow you down in some cases. For example, if you are working on a complex task or pursuing a long-term goal, impatience can lead to shortcuts or a lack of attention to detail, ultimately affecting the quality of your work. Patience allows you to persevere through challenges, maintain focus, and make well-thought-out decisions. Patience enables you to take the necessary time to learn, improve, and grow. It fosters resilience and helps you navigate setbacks or delays with a positive mindset. Ultimately, finding a balance between patience and a healthy sense of urgency is important. Recognizing when patience is needed to achieve long-term success and when a timely response or action is required can help you navigate different situations effectively. Consider where in your life you have been impatient with the outcome you wanted. Consider how it makes you feel and notice how much it focuses your mind on the lack of the outcome, rather than the outcome you actually want. Enjoy! Imagine there's a crisis at work. One more thing on your overwhelming to do list. Something that really throws you off balance… So, you're essentially faced with two choices. The first is to allow the fear response of your ancient brain to take control, pushing you into a classic fight, flight or freeze mode. Technically you could faint too but I'm guessing, you'll keep awake Here's what the results will look like. Fight, you might push back or lash out making the situation worse. Flight, you might conveniently have appointments outside the office in an attempt to escape or avoid the situation. Yes, avoidance, remember that one? Freeze, you check your emails for the hundredth time waiting for an answer from someone from anyone. Because you know, you don't have any. If this is your default stress response, it is a habit pattern of thinking that kicks in at the first sign of trouble. Remember the 800-pound Gorilla, It's pounding his chest to get what he wants. You have a tendency toward a threat response to stress than your first job is to learn how to interrupt this default mode, so that you can alternatively choose a challenge-response, and this is your other choice. By following 4 simple steps: Allow yourself to notice whatever you're feeling without judgement or resistance. Take six slow breaths. Breathing will help to keep you from slipping into a threat response. Observe your body thoughts and feelings without judgement, or any physical, emotional or mental stress. So, stop thinking, just observe. Name what you're experiencing, acknowledge it and then release it. For example, anger, or irritation or overwhelm. If you're overwhelmed, just silently and kindly say, I feel overwhelmed. I choose to release it. If you're irritated, just silently, and kindly say I'm upset. I choose to release it. Using this simple exercise, you can consciously gain more control of your subconscious reactions and calm yourself. Once you do that, you can then change your response. Just doing this exercise changes your brain, rather than being swept away by the current of emotions, you can respond to them. If you are a high achieving professional woman who put high expectations on yourself especially before holidays; only to find yourself becoming ill during your holiday due to all the stress around you, you probably already experienced some sort of burnout.
