AMENPODCAST.COMMatthew 22:34-40 Bible StudyFrom the Amen Podcast with Alex and LokalaniScripture ReadingBut when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together and one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him. "Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the law?" And he said to him, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the law and the prophets."— Matthew 22:34-40 (ESV)ContextIn this passage, Jesus faces the third and final question from religious leaders trying to trap him during Holy Week. The Pharisees had already tried to entrap him with a question about taxes. The Sadducees had attempted to trick him with a theological puzzle about resurrection. Now, a lawyer from the Pharisees tests Jesus about which of the 613 commandments in the law is greatest.Christ's answer is brilliant and silences his critics. He doesn't simply pick one law over the others—he summarizes the entire law by combining two passages:* Deuteronomy 6:5 — "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might."* Leviticus 19:18 — "You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against the sons of your own people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself. I am the Lord."Key Points1. The Command Is Also an InvitationWhen Jesus answers with "love God and love your neighbor," he's not just giving a command; he's offering an invitation to freedom. God's commandments were never meant to be oppressive rules but a pathway to life, joy, and communion with Him and others.2. Love God, Love PeopleThis "greatest commandment" is comprehensive and binary:* Vertical relationship: Love God with your whole being* Horizontal relationship: Love your neighbors as yourselfEvery other commandment flows from these two principles. If we love God truly, we will keep His commandments. If we love our neighbors, we will not harm them but seek their good.3. The Example of Onan: Breaking the Greatest CommandmentIn Genesis 38:8-10, we see Onan refusing to fulfill his duty to his deceased brother's wife, Tamar. By selfishly seeking his own gratification without responsibility, Onan:* Failed to love God by disrespecting His plan for the family lineage* Failed to love his neighbor (Tamar) by denying her security and protectionThis story illustrates how we become selfish when we break the greatest commandment. We choose gratification over responsibility, personal desires over the needs of others.4. Christ Perfectly Fulfilled the CommandmentJesus is the only one who perfectly loved God and others:* He loved God so much that he was obedient to death on a cross* He loved his neighbors (us) so much that he laid down his life for us while we were still sinnersJesus didn't just teach the greatest commandment—he demonstrated it through his sacrifice.Application Questions* How can you love God more fully this week? Consider practical ways to express your love through obedience, worship, and time with Him.* Who is your "neighbor" that needs your love right now? Think about family members, coworkers, church members, and actual neighbors who might need encouragement, forgiveness, or practical help.* In what areas of your life are you being selfish like Onan? Where are you choosing gratification over responsibility?* How has your perspective on God's commands changed? Do you see them as restrictive rules or as invitations to freedom and love?* What gifts has God given you that you can use to love others in your church community?Closing ThoughtsWhen we shift our mindset from "I have to love God and others" to "I get to love God and others," everything changes. This isn't just a duty—it's a privilege and the pathway to true joy.The more we walk in obedience, the more natural loving God and loving others becomes. As we grow in Christ, we find that loving others flows more easily from us because God's own love fills our hearts.Remember: To love God is to obey Him. To love others is to serve them. And in doing both, we experience the life Jesus intended for us."How can you love God and love others?" Hello there
The Magnetic Marketing & Mindset Show with Tracey Pontarelli.
This week we are looking at worthiness in my 3-part series of Lessons from Abraham Hicks. (If you haven't heard part one "The blessing of negative emotions", make sure to go back and listen in). I've been working on feeling worthy of the things I have over the past couple of months. I have an amazing life. I have the life I have designed for myself. Yet, I often found myself feeling like I had to prove that I was worthy of all of it. We admire people that work really hard. We admire people that have a really hard work ethic and if they work harder than the rest of us, somehow they're better than us. We should all have our goals. But, if you're struggling and doing it to prove you're worthy instead of doing it because it lights you up and gets you excited then you're doing it the hard way. This episode covers: Why we often will unworthy Are we in alignment with our desires? Remember: To get what you want is to know you're already worth it. Join me for this episode and become more magnetic in your biz and life. For more resources visit: https://traceypontarelli.com/

Did you know that “from a neuroscientific standpoint, happiness is experienced in different ways depending on your state of mind?” Mark Waldman For this week's Brain Fact Friday, and EPISODE #204, with all that is going on in the world, I wanted today's episode to take a closer look at how we can all find happiness in our life, even during the most difficult times, and look at happiness through a neuroscientific lens. If we can do this, I am confident that we will all walk away from this episode with a way to generate happiness, with our brain in mind. Welcome back! I'm Andrea Samadi, author, and educator from Toronto, Canada, now in Arizona, and we launched this podcast almost 3 years ago, with the goal of taking the mystery out the science behind high performance strategies, so that we can all apply the most current brain research, to improve productivity and results in our schools, sports and modern workplaces. I became interested in success strategies to improve performance in the late 1990s while working with some of world's top performers in the motivational speaking industry and saw immediately how important these skills were for our future generations. For those who have been with us since we launched, thank you for coming back, for listening, and supporting the podcast over the years. The topics we cover each week seem to be never-ending, as more research continues to be uncovered, each episode connects back to past episodes that you might remember from our earlier days. Bringing us to this week's Brain Fact Friday. Did you know that “there are three distinct networks in the brain responsible for happiness? It hit me while recording our Top 10 Episodes of All Time[i] when psychologist Dr. Francis Lee Stephens said “no one ever comes to me saying my thinking is awful. They come with—I feel like garbage.” How do we look for happiness, or positive feelings when we “feel” like garbage? We covered The Neuroscience of Happiness way back in November 2019 on EPISODE #29[i] and I remember it being such an important topic, that I created a PowerPoint Presentation on YouTube[ii] to go along with this episode where we dove into the recipe for peak performance, with strategies to boost our serotonin levels to generate more happiness. We took a closer look at the neuroscience of anxiety, with ideas to calm our limbic, emotional brain. We were almost a year into the pandemic, and nothing has changed with the importance of mental health and well-being since we recorded EPISODE 29, but today, I want to look at happiness with the latest neuroscience research I've recently learned from Mark Waldman, adding a new perspective, hoping that whatever is going on in our lives, wherever you are listening from in the world, that you can look at happiness with this new lens, a neuroscientific lens, and see if the ideas I'll share can help you today can generate more happiness in your life, as well as mine, as I put these strategies into practice right along with you. This week I learned that the latest neuroscientific research suggests there are three distinct networks in the brain that generate happiness. As we take a closer look at these three networks, I hope we can think of some NEW strategies to bring real happiness, into our day, with this new knowledge of the specific network of the brain that this feeling is being generated in. 1. Frontal Parietal Network: also called the Central Executive Network (CEN) or our Thinking Network that controls our everyday thoughts and memories about what happiness means to you. Waldman reminds us that these memories are “mostly based on old beliefs and memories of the past and that happiness is something that only occurs briefly in the present moment.” Remember: that your beliefs about happiness are embedded in the past, and that you can think back to old memories that made you happy, but this level of happiness won't last forever. HOW DO WE GENERATE MORE HAPPINESS USING THE CEN: Have you ever heard of visualizing yourself in your happy place to shift how you are thinking or feeling? When you actively pull up a memory of yourself, on a beach (let's say) in the middle of winter, it can help you to feel the sunshine on your face, or smell the salt water for the time you are visualizing, but when you open your eyes, you do come back to reality that you aren't really on this beach, so this strategy will get you to feel happiness and shift your mood, but there is another strategy that can bring you closer to real happiness. 2. Salience Network: This network (that doesn't fully develop until we are 28-30 years old) puts a value or level of importance on the experience we are having in the present moment and can “generate a deeper level of satisfaction” which is what real happiness is. When we can savor the experience while it's happening, like when we savor a hug from someone that you love, you are “using the Salience Network” to generate a deep level of satisfaction. When you can “mindfully immerse yourself in what you are experiencing in the present moment, you can touch those brief moments of pleasure.” (Waldman). HOW DO WE GENERATE MORE HAPPINESS USING OUR SALIENCE NETWORK: When writing this episode, I asked my youngest daughter to give me one of her “special” hugs because I know that she savors every moment when she hugs someone. In my lifetime, I've only ever had a hug like this from one other person, my friend Christian, who we lost in his late 30s, and his hugs were unforgettable. Have you ever felt this? Someone who hugs you and they squeeze you so tightly, they take the air out of you, and they give everything they've got with this hug? I remember saying to my friend “ok, enough already” as I could barely breathe with his tight hugs, but now that he's no longer here, I bet there's many of us who wish we held on tight for those extra seconds. My daughter's hugs are like this and she says that she “feels the hug with her heart, closes her eyes and that the squeeze part is important.” She's definitely mastered the mindful hug that brings happiness to everyone she comes in contact with. I know that during the pandemic, we barely shook hands with each other, let alone give each other those big bear hugs, but if you can hug someone close to you, that you love, and mindfully immerse yourself in this experience, you will feel “real” happiness. Savor your hugs. What else can you savor that you really enjoy? If you have ever been really hungry, that first bite of a sandwich tastes extra special. Savor that first bite and you'll feel what I mean. I'm sure you can write a list of things that you love that you will take the extra time to savor, to feel this heightened sense of happiness that originates in the Salience Network of your brain. 3. Default Mode Network: or Imagination Network that “generates fantasies about what happiness may or may not be” (Waldman) and this network is active when we are “wishing for happiness” in our life. This “daydream-like realm of imagination can make you desire deeper levels of happiness” but research shows that “seeking happiness in this way increases depression.” (Waldman). We dove deep into the DMN back on EPISODE #48[iii] in March 2020 with ideas for using this new brain science to reduce stress and find balance in the major networks in our brain. HOW DO WE GENERATE MORE HAPPINESS USING THE DEFAULT MODE (OR IMAGINATION) NETWORK? When using mind-wandering to visualize happiness, to prevent yourself from feeling too far away from your goal, bring yourself back to reality by using mental contrasting. This evidence-based strategy, known as the WOOP strategy[iv] (not to be confused with the wearable device that measures sleep and stress). WOOP stands for “Wish, Outcome, Obstacle and Plan” and can help you to keep from drifting off track into negative thinking that sometimes can occur in the DMN. Stay on course by daydreaming for a bit (maybe about a beach vacation) and then switch to your CEN and think of the outcomes of this beach vacation. How incredible would it be to escape reality and just relax poolside for a while? Now bring yourself back to reality with mental contrasting or thinking of the obstacles that you must overcome for this goal to become a reality. Create a plan, and you can turn your happiness daydream into reality. To review this week's Brain Fact Friday, we've outlined clearly the three networks in the brain responsible for our happiness, with ideas for generating happiness using each one. We can learn to activate these networks together, for example, by thinking of a specific happy memory with our CEN, and savoring it, with our Salience Network, and then using our DMN to further dream, or imagine our happiness memories, switching back to our CEN to create a plan to bring our happy memory to reality. I know this will increase our happiness in all 3 networks of our brain, and hopefully will leave us with an elevated feeling, bringing us as close as we can get to true happiness. REMEMBER: To savor those hugs, or whatever it is for you that brings you true happiness. Wishing you a happy weekend, and hope this episode made you smile. See you next week. Wendy Speake joins Amber to talk about fasting and how it can drive us feast upon the Lord. Questions Wendy and Amber discuss about fasting: (7:16) Fasting can be intimidating and like many spiritual disciplines I think Christians are unsure how to go about fasting with a focus on the Lord vs. focusing on self. Will you take us back and share when you began fasting regularly and what it looks like to rely on the Lord vs self? (12:07) What are some of the temptations people have shared when you're in the middle of the fast? (19:49) What are some ways you encourage people to really push through the hard parts of fasting? (29:42) You have written the 40 day Sugar fast and the 40 day social media fast. What led you to write those books? (36:07) As we close, how has fasting changed your life with God? Why Fast Quotes to Remember: “[To] really be undistracted so that we might be devoted to feasting on his presence, feasting on his word, feasting on this dialogue through prayer with him and and that's really what fasting is.” “It can be a private thing. In Matthew, we're told fasting is done in private. But in the Old Testament we're shown fasting is done as a corporate opportunity to trust God for deliverance together.” SHOW NOTES cont Resources Mentioned: Book: The 40 Day Sugar Fast by Wendy Speake Book: The 40 Day Social Media Fast by Wendy Speake The 40 Day Sugar Fast Related Episodes: 152: Sharon Garlough Brown | Spiritual Practices & Formation 153: Sarah Geringer | Christian Meditation 154: Ashley Hales | Embracing Limits ------------------------------------------------------ Follow Grace Enough Podcast on IG and FB and www.graceenoughpodcast.com ----------------------------------------------------------

Duck Calls? We have answers. On the record. DUCK DUCK DOWN Two men walk into a bar. It is at this point in the joke a spectator stands UP from the crowd, having seen something and wishing to report, and says : “Why are they men?“ And the Comedian says, “I’m sorry, but this is a sexist joke.” *** Greatest fear: someone will shout "Duck" whilst I'm looking at a duck and I am then hit by a random flying object. Probably a duck in statuette form. A man came into a bar. This is not a dirty joke. It was dark inside because it is a dark joke because the proprietor had failed to pay the bill. Coincidentally, the proprietor was a duck. Funny things happen in jokes, the world over. The bar was called “the duck billed platypus” which was often a point of confusion. "But what’s in a name, anyway?” the proprietor quacked. Just a moniker. Quoth the Raven, “Nevermore!” “No one asked you,” said the duck. Then the raven lobbed a projectile toward the duck. Who failed to duck. And was thusly taken out in an untimely manner. Timing was off. Just enough to cause trouble. The projectile was a cuckoo clock which had stopped. Twice a day corrected. Even though it had stopped it made quite an impact upon the duck, effecting the disposition of the bill. All clocks stop eventually. Even a stopped clock is right twice a day regardless of the impact upon the bill. Sometimes a broken clock takes time. Hospitality isn’t all it’s quacked up to be. Remember TO duck when the time comes because time flies. The duck billed the platypus three dollars and forty-seven cents. "Cents? cents? Don't make no sense," said the irate duck billed platypus, waiving the bill in the air. "You say it ain't fair?" said the duck. "I say it ain't square!" said the platypus. It was quite a confrontation hanging in the air. Now, the duck billed platypus, he was no fool. He had done and gone to finishing school. He knew what was what, and the meaning of is, he was not new to this turnip truck biz. "If you don't like it," said the duck to his prey, "why don't you just up and fly away?" "Mayhaps I will," said the platypus. "Mayhaps I will." Because the duck billed platypus had finally had his fill. Of the duck and his quack, of the thumb and it's tack, and he was not prepared to say when he would be back. "Now see here," said the duck, but the platypus didn't hear, Didn’t hear quack. He had flown to New Zealand, Jack. Every other duck is odd. That’s just ducky. That’s the way a duck operates. The Duck double billed the platypus over a plate of flapjacks. It was a society flap. The stool-pigeons saw to that. But flapjacks are always funnier than pancakes, always. Cue the cards. “After we seize the means of production we'll set all those duck statuettes free. No more to be lined up in neat little rows, no more ducks placed in order wading on duck row. All the duck statuettes fly away home, wherever those good eggs may nest. On the corner of wild and sycamore street, or a mantle if that's what the duck thinks best." I hate when something is described as bigger or smaller than a breadbasket. A basket which carries bread CAN be any size. Council Bluffs, Iowa is home to the "largest breadbasket in the world." Three people died in the weaving. And for what? They have proposed the construction of "the biggest little breadbasket in the world." The very concept boggles the mind. Maximal minimization. Think small is the big picture. For years philosophers have pondered whether a breadbox which is too small to hold bread can, in fact, be considered a breadbox. This is a slice of life. What is the difference between a breadbasket and a breadbox? One of them is used to hold bread and the other is used to trap it. But which is which?
One of the biggest shockers for me getting sober was realizing how many things I blamed on drinking and using that were actually part of my personality or personal short comings. For example, the thing I pray about the most is, asking God to help me be responsible and productive... yet it’s the area in which I struggle the most. Often, I’m a huge procrastinator, I avoid responsibility, and love to blame others or the situation to justify my behavior. Then, I beat myself up for being irresponsible and unproductive. On this episode, I share the intricacies of being human... with assets and defects in all. I talk about the tendency to compare, justify and explain away one’s challenges. But don’t worry, as my sponsor says, there’s never a situation you can’t come back from. Today, I’m going to continue to seek. I love you. Today’s episode #68 started out with me wanting to take a look the most important concepts from Dr. Amen’s “Thrive by 25”[i] online course that dives deep into understanding brain basics that we should all understand for ourselves as well as to better understand others, since brain health strategies will lead to a better brain and life. But—while writing this episode, I was sitting in an empty lobby of what used to be a busy local resort, looking around at what was once the hustle and bustle of business people, hurrying off to their events, or families rushing off to the pool to spend time together and the fact that the world has literally STOPPED STILL really made me think. This place looked like a Ghost Town, almost like in a movie where the scene freezes. It made me freeze and think. Things around the world have changed like night and day over the past few months starting with the COVID-19 Pandemic, with the danger of infection and death, and the change continues as the world now faces racism, riots, and global economic upheaval. I thought that this episode needs to go a bit deeper than I was planning at first, and really needs to address the Neuroscience of Change. Since we usually reject anything that we aren’t familiar with, I thought this episode could look at how to consider a change with our thinking or perspective, resulting in a change in behavior around some of the critical issues our world is facing, to see where we can take individual responsibility. If we can add the understanding of how our brain works optimally and how we can improve ourselves by really thinking about some of these issues our world is facing, we can become more empathetic towards others, and set the stage for the much needed change our world needs. If nothing is done at this time, we will look back and there will be no change, but if we can all do some self-reflection, and make our own personal and individual change, 20 years from now, we will know if our actions made a difference. While still thinking about the new direction of this episode, I read a social media post from my mentor, Greg Link[ii], who I’ve mentioned in past episodes. As co-founder of the Covey Leadership Center, Greg was the one who orchestrated the strategy that led Dr. Stephen R. Covey's book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People: Powerful Lessons in Personal Change, (1989) to become one of the two best-selling business books of the 20th century according to CEO Magazine, selling over 20 million copies in 38 languages. He created the marketing momentum that helped propel Covey Leadership Center from a start-up company to a $110-plus million-dollar enterprise with offices in 40 countries. When he writes something, I always pay attention and what he has to say is always insightful and profound. This time, what he wrote was full of his own personal insight on what was happening in the world today, tied to the 7 Habits book, and he was talking about Habit #5. For such a popular business book, that sold so many copies, you would think I would know the habits off by heart. If you were to ask a room of 100 people “who knows about the 7 Habits Book?” most people should raise their hand, but few people (including myself) can actually name the habits. Did you know the habits were divided up into 3 segments? Habits 1-3 are focused on how we manage ourselves, habits 4-6, how we lead others, and habit 7 how we unleash our potential. The 8th Habit[iii] is a whole new book, published years later in 2004 and it focuses on “Finding your voice and inspiring others to find theirs.” There’s never been a time like this in our world, and more than ever right now, we need to think about how we are managing ourselves, how we lead others, and how we can unleash our potential, and find our voice, in a way that inspires others to do the same. If we can do these 4 things, I am sure that when we look back to this time period, 20 years later, there’ll be some change. If it’s been awhile since you’ve read this book, go back to the habits (I’m doing this as well) and I’ve included them in the show notes so we can all begin to implement some of the most powerful principles of the 20th Century into action, in our life. I challenge you, just like I’m challenging myself, to learn more about yourself here. Sit down somewhere quiet and think about some of the issues our world is facing. None of us can escape them, so we might as well begin here. Do you know what implicit biases are?[iv] Do you know the biases you hold? We all have them. Greg Link’s post reminded me that “We don’t see the world as it is, but as we are”[v] and that “if we want small incremental changes, work on your behavior. If you want quantum-leap change, (like we all do) work on your paradigms.”Here’s that word paradigm again. We talked about it in EPSIODE 67 with “A Deep Dive into the Most Important Concepts I learned from working directly with Bob Proctor and his Seminars”[vi] where we cover paradigms so you can go back and take a closer look at what might be holding you back. We all want quantum leap change, and Greg Link went on to explain that the secret to this change lies in changing our paradigms. I also suggest reading Price Pritchett’s You Squared[vii] book for the best description of how to experience quantum leap results in your own life, especially if you are ready for significant change to occur. I’ve had a copy of this book since the late 1990s and it’s always on my desk. It’s only 38 pages, but the concepts are ground-breaking as they teach you HOW TO change your personal effectiveness. Price Pritchett[viii], a business advisor, speaker and author who specializes in mergers, culture and organizational change, states in this book, that “if you want to accelerate your rate of achievement rapidly, you must search out and vigorously employ new behaviors.” Quantum Leaps will knock you out of your comfort zone, but where do they begin? They begin with shifting your Paradigms—that could be controlling virtually every move that you make.Remember: “To ignore the power of paradigms to influence your judgment is to put yourself at significant risk when exploring the future. To be able to shape your future, you have to be ready and able to change your paradigm.” –Joel Barker, a technology and business futurist who published the book Paradigms in 1993.The more understanding we have of ourselves and others, the better we can communicate, work with and thrive, not just survive with our current and future results. If we want significant change to occur in the world, we must begin with some self-reflection. We did cover some of these concepts in episode 29 “How to Rewire Your Brain for Happiness and Well-Being”[ix] but this episode will focus as a review of the most important brain basics that we should all understand and apply to our life, so we can stay strong and focused and challenge ourselves to think in ways that we have never thought before, tied to Stephen Covey’s powerful habits. If the brain is involved in everything that we do and everything that we are, then we must tie in brain health to optimize our future behavior, actions and the state of the world.Let’s take a look at Stephen R. Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People (and the 8th Habit) as they relate to the 8 Most Important Concepts I learned from studying from Dr. Daniel Amen’s Thrive by 25 Course, with an action plan in place to implement these habits, and brain tips, into our daily life.STEPHEN COVEY’s 8 HABITS TIED TO A BRAIN TIP TO ENCOURAGE CHANGEHABITS 1-3: How We Manage OurselvesHABIT #1 Be Proactive, The Habit of Choice. We want to look for alternatives, not roadblocks to help us to see that there are choices. What areas of your life right now, can you be proactive with? During this COVID 19 Pandemic time, think about reframing “I am stuck inside” to “Now I can Finally Work on Myself[x]” or my home and complete some of those projects you’ve always wanted to complete. Write out a list and see how good it feels with each item that you complete. Focus on the things that you can influence, and let the others go. I know this can be difficult because people do not resist change, when it’s their choice, but many of us are now dealing with change that is NOT our choice, and it’s frustrating, annoying and just darned difficult. Just keep the momentum moving.BRAIN TIP #1: BE PROACTIVE: WITH YOUR BRAIN HEALTH: Normal is a myth. 51% of us will have a mental health issue (post-traumatic stress, depression, anxiety, or addiction) and cases have increased since the COVID-19 Pandemic. It’s more normal to have a problem than not have a problem, so being prepared and aware of how to help yourself and others is more important than ever these days. “If you struggle with attention, focus, sadness, anxiety, worry, flexibility, stubbornness, or impulsivity—welcome to the club, this is normal.” (Dr. Daniel Amen). Then add to it the fact that many of us, globally, are still quarantined, and in lockdown, and it’s understandable why there has been a rise in mental health issues. Whatever you might be dealing with, take action towards finding a solution.PUT HABIT AND BRAIN TIP #1 INTO ACTION:Be proactive and ask for help if you just don’t feel right. Do you know where you would begin to learn more about your brain health? Dr. Amen has a whole website dedicated to this at https://mybrainfitlife.com/. Visit his site, and also access his FREE 6-week challenge called The End of Mental Illness: Brain Health Revolution[xi] that he launched January 2020. This free YouTube course goes back to the basics and has tons of worksheets, tools, strategies and ideas that we all should be implementing to put our brain health at the forefront of our minds. This course will keep you busy and give you the most current information you will need to know about being PROACTIVE with your brain health.HABIT #2 Begin with the End in Mind: The Habit of Vision. Isn’t it true that we can see things clearly in hindsight? “Where there is no vision, the people will perish.”[xii] Looking back at my life and choices as a young teenager (I’m sure we could all could do the same) the things we know today with all of the advancements in neuroscience, would have changed some of the actions I took back then but we don’t know what we don’t know and no one was preaching about brain health back then, so we can only focus on the change we want to see for ourselves moving forward, (yes, we can change our brain health if we change our habits) for our next generations with the new knowledge we are uncovering every day. If we truly want ourselves, and our next generation to reach the highest level of potential, then this habit, tied to brain health is the key. We just need to have a clear vision of what we want, and then infuse this vision into our homes, schools and workplaces.BRAIN TIP #2: BEGIN WITH THE END IN MIND: CREATE A VISION FOR YOUR BRAIN HEALTH: Your brain is involved in everything that you do, and everything that you are. It’s involved with how you think, feel, act and interact with other people. It’s the origin of your intelligence, character, decisions, dreams, thoughts, creativity and actions. If you think about it, your brain is the organ that’s behind how well you will do in school, in your career and your relationships. I’m sure if we were taught about brain health in high school, we would be mindful about doing anything to not harm this powerful organ that has complete control of our future success. Everything a young person does either HELPS or HURTS their brain development and when your brain is working right, you will work right. Everything in our life stems from the functioning of our brain.PUT HABIT AND BRAIN TIP #2 INTO ACTIONWhat change do we want to see in the world? What vision do you have for the world in the next 20 years? As parents, teachers, coaches, managers and leaders, “teaching civil responsibility, respect and character” should be at the forefront of our minds if we expect change in the next 20 years. These themes should be reinforced in our homes, schools and workplaces, and infused into our day to day lives. If our brain health determines the actions that we will all take towards these themes, then brain health should also be emphasized in order to carry out this vision, starting at an early age, to protect our brain, and future, but we must begin with the End in Mind, with a Clear Vision.HABIT #3 Put First Things First: Plan Weekly and Act Daily.Stephen Covey built his whole career around the 4-quadrant chart called the Urgent and Important Matrix[xiii] where our attention goes to Quadrant 1 with Urgent and Important Tasks completed first and Quadrant 4, Distractions last. I’ve put the chart in the show notes for anyone who wants to see all of the quadrants.Quadrant 1 - Crises - URGENT and IMPORTANTQuadrant 2 - Goals and Planning - NON-URGENT and IMPORTANTQuadrant 3 - Interruptions - URGENT and NOT IMPORTANTQuadrant 4 - Distractions - NOT URGENT and NOT IMPORTANT BRAIN TIP #3: PUT YOUR BRAIN HEALTH FIRST: What You Do Today, Impacts TomorrowJust as our daily habits impact our future results in our professional world, the same goes for our brain health. Make brain health a priority; put it first, as urgent and important. We must know what things are bad for our brain (I’ve included the link to Dr. Amen’s 6 week course in the show notes resource section—this course has a resource of 100 foods that are bad for us in week 3 of this 6 Week course).[xiv]It’s helpful to know the food we should learn to avoid—the things that are bad for us and our brains so we can begin to eliminate them. PUT HABIT AND BRAIN TIP #3 INTO ACTION If you can plan ahead, the night before, write out the top 3 urgent and important things you need to do for your work, this will eliminate time wasting. If you can follow the same idea with healthy eating, and plan ahead, making sure that your fridge is full of healthy food vs the items we know are bad for us we will be miles ahead with our health.HABITS 4-6: How We Lead OthersHABIT #4 Think Win/Win: The Habit of Mutual Benefit.Win/Win “is based on the paradigm that there is plenty for everybody, that one person’s success is not achieved at the expense of or exclusion of the success of others.”[xv] When a situation is Win/Win, both parties feel good about the decision, and this builds trusts.BRAIN TIP #4 WIN/WIN: Strengthen Your Body and You Strengthen Your Brain. This is a Win/Win situation as everyone wins when they are building a stronger brain, and body. The benefits do spill into other areas of your life when you put a focus on brain/body health as your relationships and career will also improve. You will also role model the way for others to follow your example.PUT HABIT AND BRAIN TIP #4 INTO ACTION Put this habit to test and see what happens if you take 90 days to focus on your health. Have you ever done this? When you make your health priority, you will watch all other areas of your life improve. This is truly a WIN/WIN situation. You will feel sharper, have more energy, and something happens to someone who is on track. People are drawn to them, creating more opportunity. Try it—I would love to hear what happens when you take control of your health.HABIT #5 Seek First to Understand, then to be UnderstoodThis was the habit that Greg Link mentioned he was working on, and is centered around practicing empathetic listening, and effective communication. We listen first to understand, to really understand the situation, without putting our own beliefs, thoughts, feelings, or motives inside someone else’s head. Only then can we seek to be understood, which takes courage.BRAIN TIP #5 Understand Your Brain First: Discover Your Brain Type If we want to deepen our understanding of ourselves, get to know more about your brain, since it controls everything that you do. Look up and take Dr. Amen’s Brain Type Assessment[xvi] to get an idea of what type of brain you have. You will receive an email with a video explaining your brain type, characteristics of this type of brain, dietary suggestions for your specific brain type and a full report with your brain fit score. PUT HABIT AND BRAIN TIP #5 INTO ACTION Take the time to understand where you are right now with your brain health. Once you have this baseline, you can take the 6 week course, and begin to make changes, one step at a time. Be kind to yourself, and know that you can make significant change to your brain and health, by learning and implementing some new ideas.HABIT #6 Synergize: The Habit of Creative Cooperation The whole is greater than the sum of its parts, and when we can learn to work in synergy with others, we create something powerful. One plus one equals three or more. My mentor, New York Times Best Selling author and Presidential Historian, Doug Wead[xvii] used to call this concept “the triple braided cord” where we accelerate our results with the synergy that comes from the creative cooperation when two or more minds come together. Call it a brain trust or mastermind, but be prepared for the great power that comes from this union. TIPS #6 Create Synergy by Understanding Other People’s Brain Types If you want to reach the highest level of potential and experience the magic of synergy whether it’s in the workplace, or in your personal life, it’s important to keep in mind that not all brains are the same. This was John Medina’s Brain Rule #3 that “Every Brain is Wired Differently.”[xviii] Since we have all had different experiences in life, our brains are all different. What we do and experience in our life, literally re-wire what our brains look like.PUT HABIT AND BRAIN TIP #6 INTO ACTION If you really want to understand another person, Dr. Amen’s Thrive by 25 Online Course covers the main parts of the brain, with characteristics that we can all use to recognize our own brain vulnerabilities, along with ways we can improve and strengthen different parts of the brain. Also, week 2 of his Brain Health Challenge has a PDF document for strengthening each part of the brain.[xix] When we can use habit #5 (using empathy with others) with habit #6, we really can create a new level of communication with others.Habit 7 and 8: Unleashing Our PotentialHABIT #7 Sharpen the Saw: The Habit of RenewalHow do you sharpen your saw to increase your personal and professional effectiveness? Is it through continual learning, or renewal from exercise, meditation or prayer? Whatever method you choose, know that we must renew ourselves in body, heart, mind and soul to unleash our full potential.BRAIN TIP #7 Keep Learning About Brain Health, Nutrition and Exercise The older we get, the more serious we need to get about our brain health. When we stop learning, our brain starts dying. We must keep learning to stay sharp and focused and to prevent our brain from aging. We can even measure our genetic age by measuring the telomeres which hold our genetic material together like the end caps of shoe laces. We know there are specific strategies that prevent our brain from aging, and the more we take this seriously, the stronger and healthier we will be.PUT HABIT AND BRAIN TIP #7 INTO ACTION Pick one new strategy to implement and write it down. If you want to begin a daily mediation program, begin here. Or perhaps you are looking to improve your eating, then pick one area, and focus on this area for 30 days. What we measure improves, so if you can log how many days you were successful with your new strategy, you will have a gauge at the end of the 30 days how well you have implemented this new habit.HABIT #8 “Finding your voice and inspiring others to find theirs”This habit is so important that Stephen Covey wrote a whole book about it. In this book, he talks about 5 behaviors that inhibit our greatness: criticism, complaining, comparing, competing and contending. Then he goes on to say that we all have the ability to impact the world by taking our mental energy and creating a vision, channeling our physical energy with discipline, unleashing our emotional energy towards what we are passionate about and tapping into our spiritual energy to share your truth, or what life has to offer others for a better life. When we do this, we are role modelling the way for others to do the same.BRAIN TIP #8 Role Model the WaySince we can only change ourselves, it’s important to think about role modelling the way, whether it’s with our health, or ways that we can inspire change in others. When I worked with Bob Proctor in the seminars, I remember he was always asked the question “how do I change my (spouse, parents, sister, etc) so they can stop xyz (being negative, complaining, criticizing). The answer was always “You can’t. Just focus on yourself, and role model the way.”PUT HABIT AND BRAIN TIP #8 INTO ACTION You will NEVER change another person, as people resist change, unless it’s their choice, so the best way to inspire others to take action, is to focus on developing your voice, and encourage others to do the same.I remember the first time I put my voice and ideas out into the world, with my first book in 2008, just 12 years ago, and it wasn’t an easy step. Finding your voice takes courage and initiative, and with that comes the chance that you will face criticism, but when you can move forward, regardless of what comes along with putting your voice out into the world, there is a chance for great opportunity. It will start off small, but with time, momentum will take your ideas from one person, to the next, to the next, and with each person you are helping, you create a ripple effect of goodness in the world. Not everyone will resonate with your message, but the ones who do, will propel you forward. Before you know it, others will begin telling you the actions that they have taken and you realize that finding your voice has made a bigger difference than you could have ever imagined. To Review the 8 HABITS:HABIT 1: BE PROACTIVE: WITH YOUR BRAIN HEALTH and ASK FOR HELP IF YOU NEED IT.HABIT 2: BEGIN WITH THE END IN MIND: CREATE A VISION FOR YOUR BRAIN HEALTH: Your brain is involved in everything that you do, and everything that you are, so create plan and vision to improve it.HABIT 3:PUT YOUR BRAIN HEALTH FIRST: What You Do Today, Impacts Tomorrow so make your Brain Health Urgent and Important.HABIT 4: WIN/WIN: Strengthen Your Body and You Strengthen Your Brain.HABIT 5:Seek to Understand Your Brain First: Discover Your Brain TypeHABIT 6:Create Synergy by Understanding Other People’s Brain TypesHABIT 7:Sharpen Your Saw: Keep Learning About Brain Health, Nutrition and ExerciseHABIT 8:Find Your Voice and Role Model the WayI’m grateful that I saw my good friend Greg Link’s post on social media, reminding me of the importance of Stephen Covey’s powerful 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, tied to our brain health makes us all think of ways that we can improve our own personal effectiveness in the world. If each of us can, like Greg did in his post, take personal responsibility for our thoughts, feelings and actions, we can begin the ripple effect of change we all want to see in the world. If we want quantum leap results, we must focus on changing our paradigms. I hope you have gained some insight from these ideas.Episode #69 (being recorded next week) will feature speaker Ben Ampil, a US Certified Neuroscience Coach from the Philippines, to cover the neuroscience behind the fear that the world is facing, with some ideas for us to further implement the change in our behavior that could impact the world if we can all expand our own awareness, think, and accept the challenge to take new actions. My hope is that our next episode will allow us build of this one and discover that there is great possibility in front of us, and that with this great challenge (of self-reflection and change) there is also great opportunity as we begin to put each brain tip into action in our daily life, reflect on the 8 Habits and make the necessary changes so that we can look back on our world in 20 years’ time and see the impact of this change. See you next week.RESOURCES: Dr. Daniel Amen’s Thrive by 25 Online Course. If you have a teenager, or a young adult, or just want to optimize your own brain, this course is important because it will open your eyes to the vital importance of taking care of your brain at an early age. “Thrive by 25” was designed to educate students in high school to prepare them for success in life so they thrive by the time they are 25, (there is a section where high school students debrief each lesson) but this information can help us at any age. If you purchase this course, you can gain access to 3 undergraduate units, transferrable to ANY college or university. Access Dr. Amen’s online courses by clicking on the link in the show notes, or just listen to this podcast where I break down the most important concepts from this 12-module course. https://endofmentalillness.com/brainhealthchallenge/resources/What I liked the most about this 6-week course were the resources. In week 1 for example, there was a worksheet all about knowing our important numbers. Just as our numbers are important with our business, we should all know our health numbers as well. You can print off these resources and take notes week, highlighting the most important ideas learned. You will never be the same. Your brain will love you. Week 2 was powerful as they outlined their BRIGHT MINDS Brain Risk Factors and Interventions. This is the backbone of the course, with tips for staying on track with your brain health, with each risk factor, like for example, what to do if you have someone in your family who has dementia, or other mental health issues. Week 3 the resources included 100 foods that love you (or are good for you) and 100 foods that are bad for you. If you follow Dr. Amen’s work, and his Brain Warrior’s Way Podcast[xx], you will get to see that he is on a mission to change the Standard American Diet, (that he calls SAD) and I’m his #1 fan! Be sure to check out his podcast and this 6-week course and you will learn the most up to date information on building a better brain. If you are looking for some partners in your business, join some of the Facebook groups that fit with you. The Accountability Minute:Business Acceleration|Productivity
Reason #3 on why Beck and Call is NOT a better business is: It's Impossible to Maintain Peace and Balance. If you're constantly juggling unreasonable client expectations, it will be impossible to maintain any sense of peace and balance in your personal or professional life. You may feel like you're sacrificing your personal life for your business, or the important professional tasks that cannot be completed because you're catering to an overly-demanding client. At some point, hopefully before total burnout, you learn to recognize what's really important: sometimes saying “no” is the best thing. It's vital to learn to say “no” to over-delivering on services clients have not paid for; “no” to things you do more out of obligation rather than joy; “no” to things that consume your schedule leaving little or no down time or freedom to do what you truly want and love to do. When you've overextended yourself too far, the only way to regain a sense of peace and balance is to say “no.” (You can always say ‘yes' later.) You're not alone. It's common for business owners to find difficulty in saying no, especially to their clients. Clients are necessary, but you do not have to sell your soul to win their business. You do not have to be at their beck-and-call to earn their approval. You only need focus on delivering the best service and what you promised to deliver. Establish client boundaries that support your personal definition of peace and balance. What works best for you? However that looks, design client boundaries to support your personal and professional life - and the success of your business. Deliver what the client agreed to pay for - no more, no less - and strive to deliver your absolute best each and every time - that's good business practice. Today we toast to grapes, and the people who grow them! A few weeks ago, I anchored the boat and drove up to Sonoma to chat with Robert Dahut. Robert is a modern-day gentleman farmer, or a person who engages in farming but doesn’t depend on it for his living. He started growing a world-class Pinot Noir on his six-acre property about seven years ago. It takes a lot of work to farm on the rocky volcanic terrain, but the vines love it! We also discuss: What it’s like to grow and harvest grapes for wine Why Pinot Noir grapes are especially tricky to grow The 2019 wine from Saintsbury that will use this harvest An audio tour of the vineyard Farming equipment Grafting plants & clones Resources Keep your eyes peeled for the 2019 Saintsbury Pinot Noir using this the 2017 Dahut Vineyard grape harvest Remember To enjoy Flowers Winery’s 2014 Pinot Noir from Sonoma Coast, that is, if you can still find it! Robert Dahut’s Bio: Robert Dahut is a serial entrepreneur who works in the Bio Tech Industry. He has no formal training in viticulture but has been able to develop a highly sought after hillside vineyard that grows ultra premium Pinot Noir in Sonoma County. It really started with a dream and a passion to do something great with their property for which they would be proud of. They are surrounded by world-class Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vineyards, so they knew they had the correct soils and appalachian to make their vineyard stand out. The Dahuts treat their vines with loving care and strive to be good stewards of the land and the environment, believing what makes for a great place to live also produces the highest quality grapes. Robert’s second passion is growing olive trees. He grows over 8 different varieties of Tuscan Olives to produce extra virgin olive oil. Like their vineyard, everything is organic and keeps to the highest standards of best farming practices. Robert has gained all of his experience learning from others in the industry for their vineyard and olive orchards. “What I have learned in the vineyard is growing grapes is no different than running a great business enterprise. It always takes hard work, dedication and a lot of passion!” Robert lives with his wife Jennifer and his fruitarian chocolate lab Ozzie.
2019 Update: For more tutorials about editing, check out my YouTube channel and Successful Podcasting course (the Logic and GarageBand courses in there will help you get started). Editing is an essential part of producing a high quality podcast, but editing can be time-consuming and difficult if you aren’t experienced with professional audio editing software like Logic Pro X, Pro Tools, or Adobe Audition. When I recorded this episode, I was spending roughly 20 hours every week editing podcasts in Logic Pro X. Over the course of the previous 3 years, I had learned a lot about how to edit a podcast quickly with Logic. When I was new to podcast editing, Youtube tutorials and blog posts were helpful, but I learned a ton just by running into various problems and learning how to solve them. My goal for this show is to share everything I've learned about audio, editing podcasts, and podcasting in general. Some of the content I want to share is better suited to screencasts (so you can see what I'm talking about), but I can share how I think about editing and some things I've learned that have made the process faster and easier, so that's what I'm going to do in this episode. Key Takeaways: Editing can be time consuming, so if you have a busy schedule already, consider hiring an editor. Every audio editing program has a learning curve, but I found Logic Pro X is nearly perfect for podcast editing. To streamline the editing process, invest in a good DAW like Logic, Pro Tools or Audition, and then create templates, channel strip templates, and learn all the keyboard shortcuts. Music should serve a purpose other than to just sit in the background and distracting listeners from what you’re saying. Invest in professional headphones made for mixing to accurately hear how your tracks sound. When editing, cut mistakes or anything that distracts the listener from the message or content of the show. Be careful not to edit out inhales. That sounds funny. After you’re finished editing and mixing, export the audio as an MP3 file (either 96, or 128kbps). Q: What is the Best Program for Editing Podcasts? In preparation for this episode, I tried editing a podcast in Garageband, Audacity, Reaper, and Screenflow. A typical podcast that I edit had two or three hosts or guests, and intro and outro music. The results were... disheartening. I found it frustrating and difficult to do the basic tasks that are required for quickly editing and mixing a show. Of the four programs I tried (not including Logic), Garageband seemed like the best option free or cheap option. If you disagree, please write in and tell me why: aaron@thepodcastdude.com Logic Pro X is what I use and love Since I'm most experienced with Logic, I'm going to talking about how I edit in Logic. If you want to edit your own show every week, I strongly recommend investing in a copy of Logic Pro X. I know it's an investment at $200, but if you produce and edit a podcast weekly, you'll end up making that money up with the time you save. Garageband has most of the features that Logic does, but it is missing a few key features that Logic has, including the ability to quickly edit multiple tracks at the same time, which is a huge time saver. Another feature that Logic has is a mixer view, which lets you see all the plugins for all the tracks in the same place. This view looks similiar to a hardware mixer used for live sound, and makes adjusting volume faders and working with audio plugins easier and faster. If you've never opened a program like Garageband or Logic before, you may feel overwhelmed by all the different buttons and options available. I would start by watching an introduction video on Youtube. You'll need to get familiar with creating a project, creating tracks inside the project, recording audio, adding audio files to your project, making edits or "cuts" to those files, moving the pieces of those files (commonly called regions) around, how to access plugins or other effects, and then how to bounce (or export) your project once you've finished making edits. Here's a screencast I recorded to show the main differences between editing in Garageband and Logic, and some of the features that Logic has that I really like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eW3qBMblR18 How to Reduce Time Spent Editing Podcasts Here are a few things I’ve learned that have saved me hours of time every week. 1. Create templates. After you create all your tracks and set up plugin settings, delete the unnecessary audio files and save the project as a template to use next time. You can also do this with channel strip or track settings in Logic (but not in Garageband). If you are using Garageband, you can save the project as a template by saving the project file and then using it next time you need to record or edit a podcast. You won’t have to set up all the tracks and plugins from scratch which is a huge time saver. 2. Get familiar with keyboard shortcuts. If you do something with a mouse, check to see if you can do it with a keyboard shortcut instead. This can save you hours over the course of a year. 3. Learn how to quickly zoom in, zoom out, and move things around. This is often a combination of the shift, cmmd, option or control keys plus the trackpad or mouse wheel. There’s a keyboard shortcut this is one of my favorite keyboard shortcuts in Logic. It’s shift-f, which select all regions in front of the currently selected region. This has saved me tons of time. Remember: To streamline the editing process, invest in a good DAW like Logic, Pro Tools or Audition, and then create templates, channel strip templates, and learn all the keyboard shortcuts. How to Import and Sync Audio Files Most programs like Garageband, Audacity and Logic support drag and drop importing. So if you have created an empty track in your editing app, you can drag an audio file from your finder or desktop and drop it onto that track wherever you want. Here's a problem you might run into at some point: People don’t always hit record at the same time. This can make lining up the audio files challenging, especially if you’re editing 3 or more tracks. I learned to solve this with a couple of tricks. People don’t always start recording at the same time, but they often hit stop around the same time. So if the files don’t line up at the beginning, check the ending. If you zoom all the way out and look at the wav forms in the tracks, you can see the places where someone is talking, and where they aren’t. I think about the tracks as puzzle pieces, so I zoom out and try to see how they fit together. You also have to listen and see how the flow of conversation goes. If someone asks a question, there usually isn’t a big gap before the other person responds. If there is, that track may be a little out of alignment. How to Fix Audio Drift Tracks recorded on different computers may drift out of sync over the course of an hour, even if both recordings were started at the exact same time. This is just something you have to be aware of when editing a podcast. Skip to halfway or two thirds of the way through the podcast and listen to see if the conversation is still flowing like it should. You might need to nudge one of the tracks forward or backwards in the timeline. Adding Music, Intros and Outros Most podcasts I edit have some kind of intro and outro music, often added after the show has been recorded. The amount of time between the start of the music and where the talking starts is totally up to you, and will depend on the music itself. There isn’t a rule about this stuff, so try a few things out and see what sounds right to you. I wouldn’t play a full three minute track at the beginning of a show, though. Q: Should I put background music in my podcast? Personally, I don’t like background music playing while someone is speaking. I’ve heard it used well in certain shows, but they know how to use music effectively for emphasis and breaks. Music should serve a purpose other than to just sit in the background and distracting listeners from what you’re saying. How to Use Automation Automation allows you to create changes over time to volume and various other settings. This is how you reduce the volume level of a music track when the host starts talking. Automation is much easier to understand if you see it in action, so here is a link to an automation tutorial. You can also automate volume changes if you run into a situation where you or a guest back away from the mic or turn the input gain down or up significantly. I will sometimes use automation to change the volume level for a track at a specific point in a recording if compression isn’t the right solution. EQ, Compression, Mixing and Mastering Mixing and post-production are an essential part of podcast editing. The goal of mixing is to make sure the volume of all the tracks are roughly equal, so that listeners can hear everyone clearly without ever having to adjust playback volume. You can do this using a variety of different plugins that are available in many editing programs. The stock plugins I use most commonly in Logic are the EQ, Compressor, Speech Enhancer (noise removal), and the Adaptive Limiter. I typically use these plugins in that order, although I usually put the limiter plugin on the master track and not the individual tracks. These are all important plugins, so I’ve recorded some screencasts and gathered some great video tutorials for you to check out if you’re interested in learning how to use these plugins. You can find them in the resources section at the bottom of the show notes for this episode. I use a few third party plugins for most editing projects. First is Izotope’s de-clipper for fixing clipping. Clipping happens when the input gain for a track is set too high, and the strength of the signal overloads the mic and causes the waveform to distort, or become clipped. This sounds bad, but happens pretty often in tracks that are sent to me for editing. The second third party plugin I use is also from Izotope, and it’s the Dialog Denoiser. This plugin is magic. It does a great job with automatically removing background noise from a track and making audio sound cleaner. You can get both of these plugins in the RX Elements bundle, which usually costs $129 but sometimes goes on sale for $29. Headphones Matter Not all headphones are made for mixing. Some will alter the way music sounds by boosting or cutting certain frequencies. Many consumer brand headphones aren’t designed to be precise and accurate so much as they are designed to make music sound really pleasant to the ears. You’ll want to invest in professional headphones made for mixing to accurately hear how your tracks sound. I recommend the Sony MDR-7506, they’ll give you an accurate idea of how your audio sounds at an affordable price. Balancing Volume Levels My goal when mixing a podcast is to get the volume of all the speakers roughly the same. You can do this with a few different plugins, most commonly compressors. I try to get the loudest peaks of each track to land between -9db and -6db, and then I add a few db of gain to the master track or vocal bus with a compressor or limiter. What is a Bus (or Aux) Track? The way most audio programs work is that the audio signal from each track is sent to a master track. This master track is what you’ll hear when you're listening to the project, or after you bounce or export the project. A bus (or aux) track is just another channel strip that sits between the original track and the master track. If you create a single bus track, you can send the output from each of your vocal tracks to that bus track for some processing, and then the audio from that bus track will be sent to the master track. I’ve started using bus tracks recently. I used to do EQ, compression and limiting on the master track, even though I only wanted to apply those effects to the vocal tracks. I didn’t want to EQ or compress the music, because most of the music tracks I work with have already been mixed and mastered by an engineer. Now I send my vocal tracks to a bus track before they're passed on to the master track. In that bus channel strip, I have a few plugins: Dialog Denoiser by Izotope, a compressor doing a few decibels of dynamic reduction, and a limiter to make sure the loudest peaks of the audio don’t pass over -.8db. The cool thing about the bus track is that I can make changes to all the vocal tracks combined before they go to the master track, instead of applying multiple plugins to every vocal track. What Kinds of Things Should I Edit Out of My Podcast? I cut mistakes or anything that distracts the listener from the message or content of the show. Most of the time, that’s coughs of other noise in the background of a recording, any false starts or do-overs, or anytime a guest or host stumbles over words before finding what they meant to say. I also remove long pauses unless they are there for emphasis. When editing, cut mistakes or anything that distracts the listener from the message or content of the show. Many people think that a podcast should be as tightly edited as possible, with no space or pauses between sentences, but I disagree. A few seconds of silence can be used to give the listeners time to digest something important. Sometimes the silence between sentences can be just as important as the words themselves. Be careful not to edit out inhales. If you cut out inhales, your podcast will sound unnatural. (People don’t go six minutes without taking a breath in real life.) You should also try to remove background or line noise as well. There are a few plugins that will reduce background noise (expanders, noise gates) but sometimes you have to manually cut the sections of a track that have background noises. Exporting Your Finished Project After you’re done doing editing and mixing, you’ll need to export the master track as an MP3. If you’re using Logic or Garageband, you’ll need to set the end point for your project before bouncing or exporting it. This is a little gray triangle in the marquee bar that runs across the top of the editing window. This triangle sets where the file will end when you export it. Q: I see something about kbps when I go to export an MP3 file. What should I set that to? I recommend either 96kbps and 128kbps. The lower that number is, the smaller the audio file will be, but the audio quality will also be lower. 96kbps and 128kbps are both good options for your podcast, because they will sound good but also won't be big files (which take longer to stream or download). Another way to get a smaller audio file size is to bounce your files in mono instead of stereo. This just means that you’ll only have a single channel of audio, instead of stereo, which is two channels (left and right). Most music is made for stereo speakers – certain instruments or tracks are panned to come out either in the left or the right speaker. If you have a podcast that is heavily focused on music, you’ll probably want to use stereo. If your podcast is mostly just talking, mono will be fine and will make your MP3 file size smaller. After you’re finished editing and mixing, export the project as an MP3 file (either 96 or 128kbps) Q&A: Christopher asks: How do I match EQ for additional lines or replacements that might be recorded in a different location from the original recording? First, if you need to replace lines in a recording, have the person listen to the original recording at try to match the inflection of the lines being replaced. If you can’t record in the same location or with the same microphone setup, it will be difficult (although not impossible) to make the replacement parts sound identical to the original recording. Izotope made an EQ Match plugin specifically for this, but it’s part of the advanced version of RX4, which is $1200. Ben asks: Have you used Adobe Audition? How does it compare to Logic? I don’t have a lot of experience with using it, but I have downloaded and played with the demo. It has many of the same features and stock plugins as Logic, so if you’re using Windows, I think it’ll be a good choice. Cory asks: Even if I can’t hire a professional, should I have someone else listen to my podcast before shipping? I think that’s a great idea. There have been times where I’ve been doing hours and hours of mixing and mastering and my ears will fatigue and I’ll miss things. If you have a friend who knows about audio and has good ears, it’s always great to get a second opinion about your mix.
