Welcome to Steelers Morning Rush, our new daily short-form podcast with Alan Saunders, giving a longer perspective on a single news topic surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers or the National Football League. Today, it's the changing tune from Alex Highsmith and others about the reasons for the Steelers' highest-paid NFL defense for falling well short of its of stated goals. For most of the last few years, the fingers were pointed inside the locker room when it comes to the shortcomings, but there's been a subtle shift in the messaging now that Patrick Graham has taken over, and there's hope that he could be a major improvement for that unit. Alan breaks it down: Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
On the Wednesday episode of the North Shore Drive podcast, presented by FanDuel and Edgar Snyder & Associates, the Post-Gazette's Christopher Carter and Noah Hiles ponder reasonable expectations for the Steelers' defense as it enters the 2026 season as the NFL's most expensive yet again. Are fans entitled to expect elite results from T.J. Watt, Cam Heyward, Jalen Ramsey, Alex Highsmith and Nick Herbig as they lead the unit on lucrative contracts? Or is it more complicated than that as new DC Patrick Graham takes the reins from departed coaches Mike Tomlin and Teryl Austin on coach Mike McCarthy's first-year staff? Our duo tackles those question, then wonders whether QB Aaron Rodgers will continue to rely on short passes like he did in 2025. Or look to push the ball downfield more to an improved pass catching group that includes names like Germie Bernard, Michael Pittman Jr., DK Metcalf, Rico Dowdle, Jaylen Warren, Darnell Washington and Pat Freiermuth. New Steelers defensive coordinator Patrick Graham spoke to the media for the first time today. Can the Steelers' defense take the next step this year and actually preform like the highest paid unit in football? Mullsy thinks Patrick Graham's defense in Las Vegas last year was unfairly evaluated due to how bad their offense was. The Steelers were 17th in scoring defense last year despite being the most expensive unit in the entire league. Mullsy also thinks that Graham did not have very much to work with regarding his defense in Las Vegas in years prior. The Steelers were probably too reliant on turnovers in years prior. More on Patrick Graham and the Steelers defense. Graham mentioned today in his presser how much he values communication on defense. Mullsy is happy to hear this because the defensive communication under Tomlin/Austin was not good. Calls. Playoff Minute – We had to classic playoff games last night, with both Thunder Spurs game 1 and Canadiens Sabres game 7.

Is the Steelers roster better than we all think? Cam Heyward, Derrick Harmon and Keeanu Benton are a good group. Austin thinks the edge rushers are still great. The new music beds are making their presence known. Chris asks if they're AI. I don't believe they are. How should the Steelers change their defense? Should they bring back a majority of their defensive players or completely overhaul the unit?
The linebackers had an up and down game. Lamar Jackson played great in the fourth quarter. Alex Highsmith and Nick Herbig had opportunities and missed some, but converted on many too. Both teams played with high risk to try to win the division. Ray Fittipaldo of the Post-Gazette in his report card gives the linebackers a B-. Bob gives the linebackers a B.

The Browns have fired Kevin Stefanski. Grading the Steelers offense and defense against the Ravens. We all give Aaron Rodgers an A+!
The Steelers defense gave up 249 yards rushing to the Bills, the most by an opponent in Acrisure Stadium history. The defensive line and linebackers are not staying in their gaps. Hokie doesn't think Patrick Queen is good at getting off blocks.
Hour 2 with Joe Starkey and Chris Hoke: The Steelers defense gave up 249 yards rushing to the Bills, the most by an opponent in Acrisure Stadium history. The defensive line and linebackers are not staying in their gaps. Darius Slay was an experiment that didn't come to fruition. Chris Hoke thinks there's a lack of trust between Aaron Rodgers and the wide receivers.
